As a person who watches, doesn't compete, but wants to one day... the rules are a major barrier of entry for me. They're not really explained to the viewer when I'm watching.

The games 187 years old. I've only had positive interactions and ppl be helpful explaining things to me, my first tournament was within the last year too. They're a lot of fun man, you should give it a try

@@pocketvicesthis still doesn’t address the issue of someone watching at home who has yet to go to an event. Commentary almost never discussed stage striking or the process behind it

A major sport like baseball doesn't detail rules every inning. I don't think commentators naming off map rulesets would take away from smash, but it's not necessary. The best part about fighting games is being able to spectate and follow along all the hype moments and enjoy it at a base level, even if you don't understand it further than that. If it interests you further than that as a hobby or a competitor, then look at it as something to enjoy involving yourself in. Its fun, nobody is pressuring you to win or would even be bothered by you not knowing the ruleset. I've placed high enough to win money from tournaments before I understood the rulesets 100%. It's just fun to be apart of, people would rather you be apart of it than you stay home cause of you not knowing the ruleset.

I wonder if there's any data supporting that a unified ruleset will bring in more people than one that's not. Either from previous smash games or other fighting games.

As a avid viewer, I think we are all happy to see PS2 as a counter pick 😂. Remember the Gimvitational that promised stage variety, but just got a lot of PS2? Yeah, this is why DSR is important so we don’t have to keep seeing the same stage over and over! I think the viewers are very happy with this ruleset :D.

In my opinion. If you want to go on Charles's approach to widen the audience as much as possible by reducing unneeded complexity, the following should be the stagelist: -Battlefield -Final Destination -Small Battlefield Why? Because these are the 3 stages the game presents to you specifically for playing the online ranked matchmaking.

I feel like Ramses was over using the word arbitrary a lot. If a massive portion of the player base want X thing how is that not a reason for implementing X thing. Player and viewer desires matter other wise who is the rule set even for, doesn't make senses to make a real set that doesn't appeal to anyone, doesn't matter how well you think you theory crafted your rule set if it's not desired

In a competitive approach, I think letting the players or viewers decide what the rules are is a mistake. these are the people who have the least objective point of view because they are involved in the competition

My core point was that a lot of decisions surrounding rulesets are arbitrary, hence my frequent use of the word. I think arbitrary choices in rulesets introduce a lot of slippery slope which we've done in the past and now we're reaping what we've sown. As for 'just fulfill the communities desires'; I think you're oversimplifying the issue by a ton. Desires are fickle, and more often than not you're working with an aversion for change and a lack of education. There's a lot more to it than just that, like e.g. concerns for new players, viewer experience, etc. Ruleset changes can be disliked in the short term but beneficial for the game in the long term. As for your final point, never disagreed with that, no need to create a false dichotomy or strawman me. You can create something systematic while adhering to the desires of your community. Hope this clarifies my point. Keep in mind that English is my second language so maybe I just lacked the nuance to convey all of this in the moment, but I feel like I touched upon all of these points in the pod.

I could argue that top players should have the LEAST input on what makes a good ruleset (I don’t agree but humor me for a bit) If the rules are what we use to determine who is the best within these rules, what incentive does a top player have to be objective and not cater the rules to themselves? A change of the rules could mean changing what is valued as a skill which would then potentially change who are top players. Do you not see the incentive there for current top players to avoid this? Now the reality is that it’s smash so the game won’t truly deviate from what it currently is beyond stages less we go back to the infancy and overly degen tactics, but that is the worry when giving the current top players too much power.
