Spot on from a videographer's standpoint, but since I shoot stills only, I'd go for the full frame. Also, complaints from others about the 4.5 frames/sec are valid; however, with the correct shutter speed, I have shot some pretty good stills of birds in flight with my old D90 at the same frame rate. This is a simple issue. If video is a big part of your work flow, then the Z50 is better, and a better value. But if you’re primarily a stills shooter, the Z5 is the right choice. I bought my z5 body on sale for $997 brand new. The value difference has changed a lot since the Z5 was first released. But they can both be great tools for the right job. We don’t have to trash either of them. I am considering a Z50 as a second body. Size/weight is sometimes an issue for me. Thanks for the videos! But maybe we can lighten up on the “this gear is better than that gear” stuff? All of us?

Please note that the Nikon Z50 has a 1.5X crop 4K video due to the APS-C (DX) size sensor. So the 1.7X crop factor on the Nikon Z5 4K video is a mute point in comparison. The Z5 is a clear better camera overall without a doubt. Having USB-C, IBIS, full-frame, dual card slots, etc. Good little video though. To each's their own. Whatever works for you, go for it.. If slow motion video is paramount in one's decision, then I understand why the Z50 would be their choice.

@@natedagreat90 field of view doesn't really mean much. Smaller sensor. Lower image quality and reso and low light performance. Why buy full frame only to shoot in crop mode when yours using a tiny part of the sensor?

@@fewo00 lower res? 4k is 4k z50 doesn't downsample from 6k anyway . Iso performance will be just as good as the z50 because it's croping down to basically apsc at the same resolution. full frame 10 80p on the z5 is cleaner than the z50s 4k. You can get the 16-50 lens and mount it on the z5 it will automatically go into crop mode and will have the same field of view as the z50. Only difference at that point will be 1080 120 which the z5 doesn't have. Neither of these cameras shoot raw video so there really isn't that huge of a difference in video specs when you really break it down. If you crop down to apsc in stills you get a lower resolution image but that's not how video works. resolution is the same because 4k video only needs at max 12 mp to record 4k video. Rolling shutter seems to be the same as well may be a tad bit worse on the z5 but 1080p on the z5 is actually very good.

The Z5 guy is not wrong telling you that, only go for the Z50 if you are running for budget and want to become a content creator. But saying the Z50 is a good choice just because of the 120fps video, you are totally WRONG! Cause the Z5 has a crisp FHD 60fps slow motion which is totally fine and usable, can use APSC lenses and Full frames for 4K, IBIS, DUAL CARD, LOG and more...which is already far greater than having the Z50 for professional video works. But for a good low budget starter, yes go for Z50, for far greater pro quality go for the Z6, 7...

Pricing on a Z5 has come down in price of late, so wondering if your opinion is still the same. For someone like me FHD is enough for vlogging (don't really need 4K) so z5 has advantage of IBIS over z50 which is useful for walking videos. Lens prices might factor but some of the F4 lens especially if you buy with the camera are not too expensive like Z 24-70mm f4 or the kit lens for z5 Z24-50mm.

I would pick the Z5 for the ability to charge while recording. I mostly do photography and for videography, I do not shoot beyond 1080p; at least in my country, 4K has not boomed yet. And upscaled videos from my Nikon D7200 (from FHD to 4K) looks good at least on a 4K 27" monitor. Haven't checked in a 4K TV yet. I also have the Z6 II in mind.

For video yes I would agree, Z50 is a better choice like you said less money and great quality......I own z50 and d7200 and I notice that z50 in a lowlight situation autofocus in photo mode is not as good as d7200 which is a little disappointing for me.....but everything else the z50 is really good camera for money.....When I was looking for cameras I was deciding between nikon z50 and fujifilm xt3 or xt30,but because I got really good deal for z50 with both kit lenses I chose nikon 😃

I was in a similar situation choosing among Z50, X-T3 and X-T30. I was holding the Fuji and the moment I took Z50 in my hand I decided to go with Nikon. The ergonomics of Z50 are way better for me and a proper grip allowing to shoot with 1 hand, not worrying that the camera will slip out.. plus already had D90, SB700 and at the time of purchase there was a deal for 2 lens kit that hasn’t been beaten for the last year I’ve owned the camera. I just wish I had bought 50 1.8 S at that time as the price was exceptional.

I tried xt-3 for 5 minutes and was surprised with autofocus especially eye detect, lovely screen, evf,....but ergonomic is not as good as z50

Haha, I like how you crop in at 1:16 In another review, I heard that using a DX lens for 4K video would make the crop factor a smaller 1.5x, which might negate some of the disadvantage, but this doesn't make sense to me.

I would go for the Z50 as a replacement for my D7500. I have lots of APSC Lenses anyway. As far as full frame goes, I have my Sony A7111. My next full frame will be something with a HUGE amount of megapixels like the Z711.... or maybe the Leica Q2 (No lenses to buy..lol?)

I actually just purchased the z5 for photos compared to the video side of the camera. i upgraded from a nikon d7400. i do have 2 sony's for video, and looking to upgrade from the a6300 & a6000 to maybe 2 nikon z50's. any thoughts ?

Before I sound biased, I shoot Nikon and own a Z50 In your situation I’d probably upgrade to a used a6600 or 6700. For video, stab can make or break a footage and very few Z-mount lenses are stabilized apart from the APSC kit lenses. It’s a costlier path but I think it’s definitely worth it : you’ll get IBIS which opens the door to unstabilized lenses. Furthermore you have the luxury of already owning E-mount ones

Like I was getting a6400 recommend to me by most people but still the ergonomics and image quality of the Nikon made me buy it. What was your reason?

@@thenoobieditor I was already in the Nikon ecosystem; I used to own a D3500 and upgraded to the Z50. I thought about switching to Fuji but I just couldn’t let go of my lens collection and I very much enjoy Nikon’s color science and ergonomics - just as you do! For stills, it’s great and I definitely still recommend it, but I would not recommend it for video. I really wish Nikon upgrades their APS-C line with IBIS at some point though…

@@FaXeN-HD Got it There's also a advantage I heard with the Nikon cameras that you can create your own picture profiles similar to the Fuji cameras. Although it doesn't have IBIS which is a pity, I feel it will do great with a Gimbal since the AF is quite good after all the firmware updates.

Yeah, filming full frame 1080p and upscaling to 4k still looks better to my eyes than the Z50's 4k video.... Especially under low light conditions.

Dual Cards are essential for any type of paid work, no matter photo or video. Try telling a bride, that her wedding film was lost due to card failure.. However, Z5 only offers back up recording for photos. You are right, the video capabilities of the Z50 are better, it even shoots wider 4K (1.5x vs 1.7x on the Z5), However, for 1080p users, many might prefer the Z5, as it is full frame, and have IBIS, along with better low light performance, headphone jack and superior battery life and superior weather sealing. Both have pros and cons, and all depends on your personal use. I am using Sony A7IV as my primary camera, and 90% of the time I am using 1080p @50fps, as it retains the width of my lenses, and allows me to slow down footage up to 50%. Even tho I can use @120 or @100fps here in EU, I don't, cause I don't find myself slowing down more then 50% anyway, and I lose light gathering capability by filming in 100fps due to increase of shutter speed (180 rule). Point being, for some the Z5 is better, for some the Z50 is, and it all depends on the end user.

hello Peter, This is Joanne i am a beginner and I would like to learn how to take video. would Z50 will do that job. which lenses should i need to get. my brother is an avid fan of Nikon and he just bought D500 DX. he had already other nikon cameras and he is going to use to take birds. Also since i get dizzy watching videos that makes me dizzy, would you recommend a DJI romin sc stabilizer? hopefully my budget is £1,250.. will that be enough?

Planning to do more videos and am annoyed with my D500 always hunting so have been looking for another camera to work with my Z6 and thought about the Z5 as it comes with dual card slots. Seems like it was done similar to the D500 with the 4k crop, but it is a full frame and you don't get an XQD slot. Feeling like I should wait fo ra sale on the Z6II and pick up one of those instead.

A really old tech is discussed here. At the moment, the z50 and z5 cost the same. Regardless, for video it seems the z30 beats both because it’s much less expensive. However, if you need 4k60 you should get at least z6iii as no z dx camera has such feature atm. The reason I dislike z5 is that it’s too much of a compromise compared to any z6. Besides, if you buy some of the more expensive S lenses, the price savings compared to z6 become next to irrelevant. I guess, people who buy z5 get it with a 24-200 and have no more than 2 or 3 lenses in their arsenal. It basically becomes your oversized point and shoot camera. Little do its owners care about the 1.7 crop in 4k. It is what it is - an entry-level camera.

Z5 is waay better so what no 1080 120 the 4k crop gives you the same field of view as the z50 so technically the z5o has a 1.5 crop tomato tamato.. z5 you get ibis which is great for video and stills. You can get two z50s but with no lenses the z50 with the 16-50 is 1000 the two lens kit is 1200. Z5 body can be got for 1000 these days so the price is not much higher than the z50 two card slots weather sealing. And you don't have to pay more for a gimble

Yeah, no IBIS on the Z50 is the bigger deal breaker. It's easier to put a wide angle lens on a Z5 to counteract the crop than it is to walk around with an awkward gimbal, dude.

Hmmm. I’m wanting to move up from my Nikon D300s to a mirrorless, and full frame and 4K at full frame.. Nikon Z6II for $2,000. Or gulp Z9 for $5,500 which is a LOT for someone who is not making money with his system.. though if you are, then just get the Z9 and be good for the next 10 years for stills and video production. But hmm. $600 for used Z50 for stills and video with crop sensor.. and move up to something mirrorless with my vintage Manual Focus lenses and my Lensbaby Lenses.. they would be happier on a full frame.. but for getting my feet wet in the mirrorless world.. Z50 is worth considering…. As a stop gap until the new tech from the Z9 drops to the Z6III or Z7III or a Z8? Oh and I only shoot manual lenses.. how is the focus assist on the Z50? My D300s move the box in the viewfinder and contrast detection gives a green dot in the lower left when it’s sharp.. works fine, I’m fast.. but I grew up with MF lenses. If I did a Z50 I would get 1 or 2 DX Z glass.. but I wouldn’t invest heavily.. since I want to go back to full frame like I was in film days.. however…. Yes.. Z50 to get something much more modern than my D300s…. Is well…. Appealing.. thoughts anyone?

I was leaning for that Z5 to upgrade my DSLRs lineup but i was really disappointed to that 1.7x crop factor when shooting 4K. I mean, whats the point there nikon? 2 weeks ago i was about to make a purchase for the Z50 but my local camera shop said cant you wait for just a month? Nikon registered in Taiwan a new apsc format camera that uses the same battery as the Z50. It could be a Z50 II so if I were you, I'd wait. Thats what he said. And now im holding my money for that upcoming camera.

Somebody here can answer me ? i am confused ... i have a apsc lens sigma 30mm f1.4 art for nikon ... .ok , if i input this lens in a nikon Z50 and nikon Z5 ( with FTZ Adapter ) in 4k for video ... will have the same focal length ? i know 30mm apsc is equal 45mm in full frame (apsc crop 1.5x ) but the nikon Z5 is 1.7x crop in 4k ... the focal length will be more cropped than Z50 ?another question if they have the same size ... the video quality will be equal ? besides the video features ....

If your lens is built for aps-c cameras, and you put it on the Z50 then yes, you will end up with the same angle of view as an 45mm FF lens on the Z5, but... If you put your aps-c lens on the Z5, the Z5 goes into aps-c mode, and will no longer shoot in FF. In doing so, you will lose a lot of Megapixels. Almost half of them, so you end up with an around 10-12MP aps-c camera. If you put a 45mm lens on the Z5 to get the same angle of view as you do with your z50+30mm combination, the 1.7x crop factor make the 45mm into a 76.5mm. If you want to keep the same angle of view when doing 4K video on the Z5 and the Z50, you'll need to buy a 26.5mm FF lens for the Z5.

Thanks for this. I have been on the fence between the z50 and z5, but I think I’m going to get the 50 purely because I’m doing more and more videos. I film skateboarding mostly and I’ve found the IBS really struggles with so much movement. I think I’d rather save the extra cost, buy an additional lens, and add my stabilisation in post. 😀👍
