@@lazerktulu2693 As for names not translating, it really depends on the situation. Take Belarus. The roots of the word are "white" and "Rus," the northern Slavs that settled Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, etc. We just call them Belarus, but the Germans call them Weißrussland, literally "White Rus Land." Montenegro doesn't call themselves that, they call themselves Crna Gora (pronounced Cherna Gora), which means Black Mountain. Suddenly "Montenegro" makes sense; it's the Latin version of their Slavic name. I could go on, but *sometimes* names are translated literally.

@@qhu3878it is tiny, but more than enough to supply some speakers to act in this kind of exercise. Only other conlangs that come close are Quenya (Tolkein’s High-Elvish), Klingon, and Toki Pona (an engineered language with only about 137 words)-none of which were created with the intention of use as an International Auxiliary Language (IAL), though Toki Pona has a lot of good features to base one on. Esperanto has a lot of issues that I think will keep it from ever realizing its goal of being a true IAL (especially the Romance-language bias it pretends it doesn’t have despite clear evidence to the contrary), but it IS the most successful to try so far.

To be fair a lot of that depth will be more relevant to the GOC's and their staffs as well as the Intel guys and girls, rather than Private Atkins in the mud. Staff officers and intel types need good training as well, I know they are the butt of many jokes, some deserved, but it gets noticeable really fast if Intel or the Staff are not doing their jobs right!

Not entirely sure. I lived near fort Bragg for a while and when they did these types of drills we'd just get a 3 or 4 hour power outage and then a few weeks later one of the SF guys I knew would say "oh we "allegedly" did a spec ops night drop drill" They kinda had to say allegedly. But they'll come to you if they want you. That is for Pineland, which as stated in the video is only for specific scenarios.

They hire companies like AECom, Boeing, and other big military contractors to provide people to play opposition forces. Check their websites, but it helps already be in the area and know people. Obviously if you have some skills and can be trained to convincingly move about a battle space in a few hours there are more opportunities than if you want to play the dumbass Pinelander who wanders through the middle of shootout or starts crying and yelling because a bunch of guys decided kick down his door and use his house as a fighting position.

Things may have changed since I left the Army eight months ago (49 years, enlisted, Officer, active duty, Reserve TPU, AGR, contractor and DAC), but China and Russia are considered "near-peer nations inimical to the interests of the US" because they don't have the ability to project power across the world like we do. Iran is described as a "regional power in opposition to US interests in the Middle East". US Army strategic, funding and doctrinal planning guidance states that the primary possible opponents are Russia, China and Iran. There are pieces of evidence of who the US civilian and military believe we are going to fight. Various exercises feature "OPFOR (Opposing Forces)" organized and equipped (real stuff and "VISMODs") along the lines of Russian and Chinese forces. The OPFOR at Ft. Irwin, the National Training Center was designated as a "Motor Rifle Regiment" and featured Soviet tactics, organization, doctrine and equipment. There was no attempt to hide who we believed we were going to fight between 1978-1992. Still, before this, OPFOR were generally other US units with cheap and easy VISMODs, a plastic cover over the issue helmet featuring a ridge over the top. But, really, I can remember when I was in the 82d ABN DIV in 1983-84 and we were wargaming intervening in Central America to execute regime change in Nicaragua.

Technically Monarchial Communism happened once. When Communists overthrew the government of the Commonwealth nation of Grenada, they elected to keep Elizabeth II as Head of State. So until the Communists left power, Grenada was a Communist Monarchy.

So there is a series that I love to bits in which a small town in West Virginia is sent back in time to central Germany in the middle of the Thirty Years War. There is a sub-series within the larger series about a security consultancy company (Think Wells Fargo/detective agency/short-term private security that also works with military intelligence here and there.) Part of book one has the originating group of ex-1630s German mercenaries running through BootCamp for the army reserve, including some company-level field drills such as responding to an invasion of a village, trying to get a supply train to the battle while dealing with interference from both infantry and cavalry and finally defending a town against a larger force with artillery support. The training is quite interesting because it is in preparation for a conflict, which everyone expects within a year or more, against the neighboring Saxons but the training is all about building discipline, adaptive thinking, detecting and ejecting problem soldiers, and allowing cadets from the JROTC to get some field time with veterans and familiarise everyone with the new standard rifle. There were seemingly impossible missions or missions where the stated objectives were different from the actual objectives, etc. I found it extremely well written. The point I am trying to get to is I could see the future enemies in that world's training courses being named something like the Sax-Bimbacs. (A reference to a rather... problematic knight called Von Bimbac but referred to by his opponents as "his bimbo-ship" who tried to organize a destabilization effort to delegitimize the new-born liberal democracy growing in the heart of Germany. The over series is called The Ring of Fire. The sub-series is called NESS (After the agency's name) and the book is called A Matter of Security by Bjorn Hasseler.

At one point I actually made a model for a Kekistani government but never got around to making a block hierarchy visualizer. It was a mix of tribal delegate anarchism and accidentally Libyan Jamachiriya. Each "tribe" was responsible for sustaining an agency of government like it's some kind of teen anti-utopia, with /pol/ running the inter/pol/(e) Edit: It was also the first thing that hit my head after waking up that day, which explains everything

In Switzerland military service is mandatory. We had some excercises with made up countries, but to us soldiers it was always obvious which country was the enemy. For example: "Northern country is being destabilized by a huge influx of immigrants". We all knew this was about Germany. In 2013 the army apparently still used real countries for their excercises. The excercise was about a revolutionary France invading Switzerland once again. The scenario got leaked to the press and it caused a minor diplomatic incident.

Esperanto was used actually because of how easy it is to pick up as an english speaker, and this is part of the design of the language as well. The grammar is entirely regular, so once you learn a rule there isn’t an exception to said rule. It only takes a few months of study to be quite proficient and if one were completely immersed like the soldiers in this exercise would have been they would’ve learned it even faster. French Foreign Legion soldiers for example go in the legion speaking no french and are entirely trained in french and pick up the language as they go and come out being fluent. French takes HUNDREDS of more hours to be proficient in than EO, so this wasn’t that crazy of an idea. Would probably be more practical today too than it was back in the day
