Look I'm sick of 50 Shades so I decided to look at a romcom book that everyone on Reddit HATED and I can see why, lol. The book I'm reviewing is 'The Unhoneymooners' and I think it became popular because of BookTok? Probably, idk, but when is BookTok ever right? lol also if anyone is reading this I am very sick atm so do what you will with that info.

If I found out my sibling was cheating and lying to their spouse and had been for their whole relationship, I would tell the other person because I'm a regular human being who thinks people deserve to be treated well in their relationships. Olive's reasoning of "Well, he was just protecting his brother and I would do the same," is her gaslighting herself into thinking Ethan did nothing wrong. He broke up with her and gaslit her because she told her sister she was being cheated on. He's allowed to protect his brother but she's not allowed to protect her sister. I hate experiencing romance stories where the protagonist deserves so much better than the love interest they get, and Olive deserves *so* much better.

I think it's really funny how Olive gets criticized for being cynical/pessimistic, but whenever she tells Ami about the cheating Ami just assumes Olive is lying/making everything up. Even though she tells her that Ethan is the one who mentioned the other woman. Ami could just ask Ethan about it (or maybe just trust Olive since they're supposed to be close, but whatever). Talk about the pot calling the kettle black 😂 Ami, Dane, and Ethan deserve each other. I wish Olive would've just washed her hands of them all and found better friends and/or a better boyfriend.

The craziness of Colleen Hoover just shocks me because it's hard to see happening, but this book made me mad because the situation was less out there and the protagonist actually calls out the issues going on, but then has to lose her backbone for the plot and gets together with a guy who needs to re-evaluate his relationship with his brother as it's toxic

The fluttering and pearl clutching about women and/or female characters being ‘angry’ or ‘unlikeable’ (flawed) is definitely a real thing. I guess I didn’t realize quite how American it was from my POV in the inside, but you’re probably right. I remember a romance author talking about how she got a bunch of negative reviews on goodreads because her recovering alcoholic heroine took a little while to warm up to the hero and a certain type of romance reader (IYKYK probably lol) declared that meant she was impossible to care about. And in the comments a bunch of other romance authors were also talking about trying to walk the fine line of being true to the character and story they wanted to tell but making it ‘palatable’ to this prevailing attitude. I’ve seen the attitude myself, and with this pearl-clutching from the authors over a woman being so EXTREME as to get upset over cheating, I’m guessing they’re also that type of reader. : P

it's honestly really frustrating across all kinds of media that you really can't get away with having a female character who behaves exactly the same way as an equivalent male character. Olive also told Ami that Ethan is the one who told her about the other woman. Even if she didn't believe Olive because shes so "bitter" (just because she's not the most trusting, naïve person on the planet and wants to keep her sister from getting hurt), why didn't she ask Ethan about it? What would he have to gain from telling Olive since everyone knows he cares about Dane? Ami is just one of those people who bury their head in the sand every time you tell them something they don't want to hear and then turns it around on you and it's so irritating.

I feel like this would’ve been such a cool story, if it was focused around the sisters relationships. It would be so cool, if at the end instead of all of ending up with Ethan, it was more about the sisters relationship together. How they both come into themselves, how they realize they don’t need men to be happy. It would be great if the ending scene was both of them telling their respective partners to fuck off, instead of how this went. I feel like this had the makings to be such a good story about sister relationships, and in the end it was ridiculous. It honestly is written as if Disney Channel did an adult romance. Especially that last scene reminds me of a lot of the Disney Channel shows I watched growing up in the early 2000s-mid 2000s.😭

Romance books do always need a happy ending, it's a feature of the genre. People often debate on whether or not Nicholas Sparks' books can really be classed as romances for this reason; they don't always have happy endings. Books that feature romance but end with the couple deciding to go their separate ways sound more like chick lit or new adult to me.

To answer the question: yes, for a book to qualify as a romance genre book, the couple have to end up together. That’s not to say there aren’t great instances of romance within other genres or that there aren’t wonderfully implemented cases of the couple not ending up together in other books, but by definition those sorts of endings would exempt the book from being a romance novel

I bought this book on audible a while ago and I was really excited about the concept, by the time I finished it I wanted my money back. I’ll never understand why the author made the love interest so insufferable

The amount of times she mentions how “American the book is” is actually quite annoying. I agree. Cynicism and apathy are like the two most common emotions. Lol.

this book was horrendous for so many reasons but i absolutely despised the latina "'representation". olive and her family were just stereotypes and what made it worse is that (i'm like 90% sure of this) neither christina nor lauren are latinas

If they don't get together it's love story/drama/ tragedy/women's fiction. Genre romance requires happily ever after or happily for now

Fellow *inattentive* ADHD diagnosed ppl: I see a naturopathic dr and she recommended Wellbutrin which does double duty of anti-anxiety and tackling the inattentive form as opposed to hyperactive- that diagnosis is treated with Adderal or Ritolin. If you take any of the former with an inattentive diagnosis, it will spike your anxiety!!! I’ve been on Wellbutrin for just over five months and so far so good!

I had to explain to her what happened in this book to make me so upset

if you told me the whole book was a parody of bad romance novels, I'd believe it, because who in the year of our lord 2024 is actually, seriously, and unironically ending their novel with an "and everyone clapped" scene???

To answer the question at the end, to be considered a romance, the novel must have a central romance and a happy ending (happily ever after or happy for now). Those are the only two rules to be in the genre.
