Not gonna lie it will be one of the best eras. Those who complain only see the thing the Xmen fans dreamt about but this time sustained. However the point is to show that even if you get the dream if your ego gets infront of it, you make your own nightmare. Look at The mutants became a little hypocritical towards the XMen's creed became the thing they hated the most the aggressor the pompous saviors and the segregation they fought against. While fighting to save the world even though it looks like it was to prop up their dominance even if that dominance may have been an illusion from the start.

Here’s what I would do- evolve the story. Not go back to the mansion. But evolve from both status quo. Have the X-Men move to Mars. Then have the non-Apocalypse mutants vs the Apocalypse mutants as the main conflict. Proving that it’s not just humans vs mutants, but one group vs others. It’s always going to be Us vs Them. And in another turn of events, I would make the humans suffer without mutants in their world and actually MISS the mutants. For example, a threat that only the mutants can handle appears. They realize that human kind NEEDED to evolve in order to take on these kinds of threats.

And thats the thing. I think the reason why Krakoa was so popular was that it was the X-Men and the mutants as a whole finally moving forward. Now this era feels 2-3 steps back. Although I don't think we've seen the last of Krakoa.....

The main issue with the end of Krakoa is that most people mix 2 things : the in-world side of things and the meta side of things. Krakoa was full of flaws from the beginning, and that's what leads to interesting stories. On the "in world" side of things, something doesn't have to go because it's imperfect or, if it was the case, the U.S. needs to go too, it was never perfect in the first place. On the meta side of things, the Krakoan era brought new and interesting conflicts, and my biggest concern is that, what will come next will ignore the Krakoan era and go back to the good old treatment and conflicts. I love Gail Simone as an author and a person, but my experience of her writing leads me to believe that she will bring a lot of heart and fun to the stories (which is needed too), but she won't deal with concepts as high and deep as those we've seen in the last years. I fear that the mutants on Mars will become a footnote, a corner of the marvel universe rarely explored (if they'll even exist after all is said and done). I fear that at some point we will come back to the tired conflicting love triangle of Cyclops, Jean Grey and Wolverine. To make them a throuple was fresh and new, and it could have been a way to explore new themes and dynamics. Ultimately, my issue with the end of the Krakoan era is the same I have with mainstream comics in general, in that everytime authors take stories to new and unexplored places, at some point some editor, CEO or what not comes along and say "let's bring it back to the comfortable same old, same old status quo". And the stories never evolve, and the universe stagnates.

I mean, you could easily keep Krakoa in some form, but not for most of the X-teams. I don't think Krakoa was supposed to be a Utopia, but it was somewhat Utopian. And as a mutant, you were generally safer there than in the US, Russia, or the UK.

Krakoa was something new and it brought interest back to the X-men. The mutant circuit and the tech. The fact that Mutants were really making a major impact on the world and humans still found something to complain about and weren't grateful with the mutants drugs and Resurrection. Forge had a plan to end hunger and homelessness. I wouldve been interested in seeing how that would have played out. Krakoa had some issues like any other nation does and the council planned to do better with new plans wouldve been great to see, too

Krakoa could’ve been the status quo for the next 20 years but I also can appreciate the slow build of the house cards and then tearing it all down to have a succinct era that you can see a natural arc and flow through it. People get way to hung up on HICKMAN as though he was some god figure for this era and conveniently ignore that this whole era launched with a half dozen titles and was always a communal effort. Would’ve been nice to see Hickman’s plans but if he stayed we wouldn’t have gotten stuff like Judgement Day and I think that’s honestly a fair trade.

@@elbimio4u shoulda written an actual arc then I get how he writes and HoX/PoX is untouchable, but all he has to show for his time on main X-Men is very underwhelming Giant Sized issues and a few neat one offs that he abandoned and did nothin with. He chose to literally never use Moira, he could’ve stayed, he just didn’t want to do anything but what he wanted. So we’re left with a resoundingly mediocre 20 issues that don’t amount to anything because he chose to stop writing. And Ewing is Marvels best writer
@elbimio4u
@elbimio4u Ай бұрын
@hobbes6392 I mean, he did write an arc. It's not his fault Marvel has one of the worst editorials in history. Also, it wasn't just him on this project, and a bunch of people had their hands in it, which would rightfully frustrate most. His Ground work on this X-Men run is the main reason we love it. And what do you mean not use Moira? He literally used her to bridge most of the X-Men alternate reality stories, making them all Canon in a non story breaking way. Love AL but no. It's definitely Hickman. There's a reason they gave him Spider-Man after what they've done to Peter and MJ in 616.
@hobbes6392
@hobbes6392 Ай бұрын
@@elbimio4u im talking exclusively about his 20 issue run. Moria doesn’t do squat there, and to be honest she’s the absolute least compelling Time Machine, sorry character, I’ve ever encountered but that’s my own opinion. As for Spidey, what I’m supposed to kiss the man’s feet cause he did the bare minimum spidey fans have been begging for for 30 years? He’s done 3 issues, the most interesting thing of note is a very cute gay old man couple. Come back to me in a year when there’s been an actually story. By then I image the spidey fans will have turned on him and curse his name, cause he’ll have introduced character drama between Pete and MJ which is unforgivable. Give it time, spidey fans are nothing if not hateful and spiteful. I adore Hickman’s stuff, I’m upset that a lot of the interesting political discourse he introduced kinda got left at the wayside but Krakoa was built by more hands than Hickman and every other hand was actually cultivating what was, while Jonnyboy ran for the hills as soon as those hands went “yeah but we don’t really want to go to space and be data mind planets”

His creator, Ian Fleming even said he was not supposed to be a good man, yet people complain about him being problematic. Yes. He is. That was the point from the word go.

It's hard to know to what extent Magneto's "New Gods" comment reflected his thoughts. If you send Magneto & Apocalypse to a meeting (where you're expecting an assassination attempt), you're hoping to remind those who are threatening you to think twice before attacking. For the Magneto deterrent to work, people have to believe Krakoa is willing to let Magneto go all Silver Age on their butts. In the round, Krakoa was probably no worse than most nations. If we judge them harshly, we should probably extend that judgement to similar (and worse) real-world nations & governments. I'm guessing, that's part of the point.

We always knew Krakoa wouldn't last, but I still think is soon and that it had a couple more stories to tell. Specially about IAs. For me one more year of a final event/saga before the fall would have made a difference. And why is it soon right now? Because Krakoa was just permeating out of the X fandom. Yeah, we the hard core fans followed since day 1, but it was something so big that it could have impacted the whole pop culture. "Krakoa era" is not just an island nation. It is the first time that the status quo of the mutants changed from discrimination to prosperity (not sustainable, I know, but still is a change). Magneto also said "what could people reach if they weren't fighting for their lives?". And another important thing is the editorial resource of the data pages. I know some people didn't like it, but I didn't see anything like that before. It's like the evolution of the narrator in old stories. Something off screen that contributed to the story in a natural way. People actually communicates through emails and text messages. Seeing something that is always there for us is a smart resource. But you are right, we gotta get over that, as we got over Disney's attempt of boicot against the X-Men in the 2010s before. Nothing new under the sun for the hated and feared.

There was a simple reason, Eagles were huge, intelligent, and powerful. Things that make the ring want to corrupt even quicker, hence why the Hobbits were picked. They were small, simple, happy in their bubble, and wanted nothing except home, which is why Bilbo and Frodo were perfect for it. That's what a good story does, it can even close "plotholes" without you trying if you just elaborate on the world and characters enough. He wrote that this "achieves nothing but incredibility", and that it makes stale "the device of the Eagles when at last they are really needed". But it’s not just ending, the end of Krakoa is an ending that had been planned and foreshadowed for more than a year now with some plot points being put into non X-Men titles so in fairness I wouldn’t call this lazy at all, the “everything ends” comment relates to not getting attached to the status quo

@@Wezt334 I know it was part of an interview, but if you keep getting asked about it over an over again, you tend to resort to a simpler phrase instead of trying to explain the lore and detailed description of everything to every person that asks. I mean, look at George RR Martin. He's so sick of people asking him when his books will be done, he's taking that approach to the answers too. So yeah, they themselves may have said a thing, doesn't mean it's the definite answer from here on, it means they are tired or talking about it. As for Krakoa, it was foreshadowed things were about to pop off, not the ending of Krakoa. They could literally try to resolve this conflict, sacrifice a few people, then have Magneto take over Krakoa with new laws and rules, because this should be a nation they shouldn't give up on but learn from their mistakes and hubris. Or just reset everything, that's fine. Maybe they should've done that in Lord of The Rings right, it was written that Sauron wanted the ring and wanted to take over all of Middle Earth, so why should they have a happy ending and have a perfect land. Nothing good lasts forever right? Yeah, that would've been a Great final book to read...

@@YourSuperman35 hey if you need to make it so the authors words can be ignored to suit your narrative cool, personally I don’t subscribe to that. No it had been foreshadowed to end sir, it was why things ramped up the way they did, if you are unhappy with that then cool that’s your opinion but this is comics no change to the status quo lasts forever take Utopia for example you could argue it was Krakoa on a much smaller scale and it too was never meant to be forever. Again this is comics not a novel, LOTR was a singular story that had a beginning, middle and and more importantly finite end comics however are ever changing both in landscape, character and plot whether the current story has the character/s in a good or bad place does not mean they will remain that way forever.

@@Wezt334 it's not to suit my narrative, it's to suit the actual lore and books that he spent years writing and crafting together. But yeahhh let's take the words of maybe an hour long interview instead. Because by your logic, then we should be calling lightsabers laserswords instead since that's what George Lucas calls it in oh so many interviews. Explain to me how that's different then? For it being a "utopia", dude, it was a nation at best. They stopped calling themselves a utopia after House and Powers of X. And if utopia are your issue, then explain why on Earth is Wakanda still a thing? They should just wipe it out with a flood or something and start fresh you know.. If we're being generous, this is the 3rd or 4th time they are "starting fresh" with the X-men. It's tiring and people slowly start to give up. I know it's my opinion, but so is majority of folks. So yeah you may enjoy starting fresh, but most people like investing in a place or a story, and building on the foundation of it there. Imagine resetting the Harry Potter universe, or Star Wars, try using your logic on those and see how the Fandom reacts.

My issue is clear, They are saying it happened but we are not keeping any of the ideas. So far they want to go back to the 90s for cartoon synergy and idealistic getting that Jim lee/Claremont lightning in a bottle. But I as a Krakoa reader hate the notion that nothing is going to stick, no Krakoaesque tech or looks, no diverse teaming so far namely on the main team, something i heavily worry when i heard the rumors Gail was writting, since she barely touches any melanin in characters. Krakoa had to end but now almost anything aesthetic positive in this era is gone. I do feel that Krakoa did plummet after Hickman left, everything was trying to wrap up and i feel bad his vision didn't come to fruition and Gerry...he's now persona non grata. Now this new era looks like an abomination at least to me. Visualy, and so far none of the core teams really sound interesting and borderline just dumb. I do hope to be proven wrong but this looks like the IVX era beat for beat. I'm happy it happened and hope someone on AO3 makes a better sequence post inferno.

I will also say that, fallen Angels excluded, the stuff they did with Kwannon was really good. To the point that Excalibur’s issues where the two were interacting were some of my favourites. Also, Saturnyne is now one of my favourite antagonists. Mostly because she’s so powerful, is such a Dynasty level soap opera and her thirst for Brian made me laugh. Especially when the Betsy Mosaic happened.

There was a poignant scene in X-Men Forever where Xavier confessed to Synch that Krakoa was the exact opposite of his true dream, peaceful coexistence. The Krakoa Era was fine. The comments are reasonable. Does it have to end? Not really. Yes, Krakoa era has many problems and isn't as idealistic as they claim to be. Are the mutants arrogant, no more than any other group of people? Are the non-mutants arrogant? Are the Shiar, Kree, Atlanteans, Inhumans, Eternals... arrogant? Marvels tackled the issue of equality as in the Fantastic Four run discovering how they received the boost of their Cosmic power from the race that banished its failed superhero's turning into nonhuman appearance. We've seen the Inhuman's treatment of the Alpha's. The mutant community could easily depart Earth and form its settlement on another planet, Universe, other Otherworld or Dimension but many choose not to relocate for a host of individual reasons of family, friends, community, way of life. Some could pioneer relocation elsewhere and relocating at their own time of choosing and where but that's an individual's decision. Mutants are so accustomed that all their problems are human initiated, yet they've always known that some of their greatest adversaries were other mutants who had goals of power, greed and accumulation of material, which are some of the same reasons of human actions on humans. Why would mutants be immune to their own vices and weaknesses?

The Krakoa era was amazing. As a long time fan this era of X-Men this era was something I really needed and a main reason I jumped back into comics. I always felt everything before was just too cartoony and try to be too based of the movies (even tho it was great plan being played) . After Clarmont era everything was kinda meh. Every single xmen book, x-related issue from the start of the 2019 always left thinking " like damn this went down in spider man, FF, avengers or ghost rider etc I wonder how this affects Krakoa?" everything mattered to what was going on that island to the how they was trying to help the humans, finding there footing amongst themselves. If you read my previous comments I always preach diversity and I gonna miss they can just come up with a new title and literally press random select and get 5-10 people we ain't never heard of I think that's going to be very missed going forward. I hope this gets revisited like the age of Apocalypse time line cause there still some good food left on the table. I do feel there is a lot stuff they wasted that could have more light on. You mean to tell me in both Nightcrawler's titles not one person came out from the waiting room? Outside of X-force I felt they shoulda had another black Ops team title like X-men Black (or what the Hellions shoulda been doing) where they was just retrieving the dead mutants bodies to bring back for res protocols. X-Corp shoulda had another title with them flipping the mysterium and more on the space trade and the backlash after Orchis put fentanyl in the Krakoain meds and they gave us the Deviant breadcrumbs during A.X.E. event no follow up on that but aye long live the Krokan era!!

I don't think that most people actually care about Krakoa, specifically. Rather, its a fear of the reversion to the same kind of X-men stories that had been getting rinsed and retold for decades prior to House of X/Power of X. X-men stories had matured, progressed, took chances. And now we're basically right back where we were before Krakoa started.

My only problem with the end of Krakoa is that it really feels like Marvel is preparing to take the mutants twenty steps back. Like it’s obvious Krakoa couldn’t last forever and that whenever we got a new era it was going to change things, but that change is really just going back to what they were doing for the last thirty years so it makes it pointless in keeping up with the mutants/X-Men if we can only get the same three stories out of them.

I think every criticism you made about an imperfect Krakoa is valid. The ruling class of Krakoa WERE arrogant. They were messy. They made mistakes. Which is exactly why I loved it. Because beyond the corruption, the imperfections, the concept, the idea and the ideals of Krakoa were sound, and at it's core represented a natural progression, a culmination of sorts of everything that came before. Xavier's dream of peaceful co-existence? It never worked. Magneto pushing the mutant's survival and agenda by terror and brute force? It didn't work. But this time WAS different. They broke all the rules. And the beauty of it, no one really had to sacrifice their sense of self to make it work. They were who they were. Magneto's ALWAYS been arrogant. Did you think he was going to stop? Xavier has ALWAYS been arrogant? Did you think he was going to stop? Absolutely not. And that's what I loved about it. I think your criticisms with Krakoa at least with me, has had the opposite and unintended effect. Build on these imperfections. Let's see the internal struggle of the ruling class give way to a true democracy while simultaneously continuing to fight off Orchis. That's a damn good story there. What are the ramifications of making babies and not caring for them? Are concepts of traditional children raising considered "too Human" and should be rejected by mutants? There's a story there. Why was it decided that only Domino, Kid Omega and Wolverine attack the Forge over and over again? Why not every Omega level mutant attack? There's a story there. And then there's elements that weren't addressed by you that should be explored. I'm not thoroughly convinced that the universe resets if Moira dies. I think when she dies, she starts anew but the reality she left? There's no reason why it shouldn't continue. After all, that reality existed BEFORE she was born, there's no reason for it to end after dies. Again, this is a story to explore. Krakoa doesn't have to end. There's literally years of potential storytelling from this paragraph alone. And we haven't even touched on the Omega Level mutant Storm who NEVER DIED in the Krakoan Era and her reign to be the regent of Arrakko and the voice of Sol, and all the ramifications that came with it. As Beast descended into villainy, Storm's arc of ascension was unparalleled. There's more stories to tell. A flawed Krakoa guarantees fascinating storytelling. It shouldn't signal it's demise.

We have a story where Monet, Angel, Trinary and Selene beat up Fenris? Yes! We get a story where Karma is a leading role, Wolfsbane reminds us why she should never be around kids, we have a deep dive into the psychology of the Shadow King and Martha Johanson chews people out!? Hell yeah! What else? Stories where Stacy X, Dust and blindfold were doing stuff were fantastic.

Completely right @Blerd, and at the same time, with every great story, there is a longing by the audience for that illusion of happily ever after, and getting to the new era could also be done with the leaders learning their lessons and using a reset to basically pull a Moses. We can found Krakoa (or a version of it) but it a) cannot have us in it, and b) won't be for everyone. Therein all you said comes to bear. 1) Krakoa gets its system of psychic sustenance, and has its Five, but it also has 2) a democratically elected government, without 3) any of the worst offenders being allowed in. Plenty of conflict could still arise, but they could be off and out of spotlight for a decade or so while the X-Men are dealing with the realities of a) not all mutants wanted to go so bigots still target the smaller presence, b) the worst villains (e.g., Marauders, Selene, etc.) were barred entry, so they're still the world's problem, c) making mutants look bad, and even d) still wanting to have entry to Krakoa (at least some) so making their way there and causing problems. On top of the fact, even without the main heroes and villains involved, other mutants are flawed and problems will still arise.

My first hint that something was wrong was when Nightcrawler suggested that the third law of Krakoa be "Make More Mutants". What does that even mean? Does that illegalize abortion? But only if the baby is a mutant? Is contraception illegal? What about being gay? Is virginity a crime now? And then the Quiet Council just adopted the law with no further questions. Finally, a mutant character I can relate to. Both as a conjure man and as an anti-natalist I can totally relate to what Third Eye was saying. There are far too many children in this society being abandoned and neglected by adults all because of selfish reasons. Only for those children to be lost within a system that leaves them vulnerable to abuse -creating more victims and abusers. Also, wasn't the "make more mutants" Nightcrawler's decree since he's a practicing Catholic priest his beliefs influenced this law. What was his response to such negligence? Did he even express accountability for encouraging such reckless behavior across Krakoa? Did he try to resolve it? Most likely not.

I agree, and it was told that a fall was going to happen. Kroakan era had a beginning, middle and end from its inception (even if writer was no longer). It should not be revised as it should be something remembered and work should be made not to go there again. Not exactly like that. Let’s see…

There were many great stories especially when Hickman was steering the ship. Plus it gave alot of the b and c xteams great stories. The hellfire gala was great each year, wanda became magnetos daughter again. Apocalypse was great as a team builder. Then it started to go into chaos, when the writers kinda got free reign so to say.

Honestly, yeah I get it. Shame for it to end but it could not exist in the form it had. The reason why Third Eye was imprisoned is darker but also funnier; he took couples who were thinking of abandoning any kids they had if they didn’t use protection to the astral plane to see the consequences. He scared them straight so badly that the birth rate fell by 25%. The hatchery was run by Stacy X and I loved when she punched Nightcrawler. Almost like retribution for the Chuck Austen era. They didn’t even have an adoption system in place. And there’s me constantly thinking “the Hellions are a thing, Maddie wasn’t allowed on the island and the Morlocks chose to have the Florida golf course instead because they didn’t feel safe.”. And YET, Cassandra Nova can prune Krakoa’s organs to her heart’s content. On top of that, FENRIS, the “what are you doing Stepbro?” But with less steps Hydra agents were both allowed to have offices of power. I know they’re the flops but it said a lot. Probably why I liked X corp so much; because it confronted the failings of Krakoa that those two could be seen as Ambassadors with their consulting firm. I feel sorry for Doug when he would monitor their quarters. Making characters like Danger, an AI, and Selene, a magical user who can resurrect without the system’s help, was a really bad call. Especially after Apocalypse left. That Cerebro episode was right; Selene got elected to the quiet Council and apocalypse came back to fire everywhere lol. The big one is that issues the X men already had came to a head. Beast is the big one isn’t he? Sells a homeless black woman to Sinister? Gets praised for curing the legacy virus. Destroys numerous timelines by pulling the original 5 teens to the present to get on his “I hate Scott” soapbox? Gets scolded by the Watcher and just goes to bed. Genocides a Latin American nation? Jean throws him around but never reports him. Legion was literally trying to help people but his dad was awful to him. Props to Blindfold verbally destroying Charles. Good on her. Here’s my issue with Krakoa; half of the leaders sucked and it’s only because of the citizens in each book that most problems are noted, let alone handled. The terraforming was a massive feat but they left the MVP of Academy X, Dust, to clear up after them. She’s an icon. Yeah, keeping Moira isolated made sense but it did mean that the two characters who would’ve added more nuance to her, Proteus and Wolfsbane, weren’t seen anywhere near her until the second gala. I will say that, out of the quiet council members, Storm, Kate and Emma were the MVP’s.

I completely disagree with the "if people made wise decisions, there's a boring story" take. To the contrary, a story is elevated when everyone makes sensible, smart decisions. Conflicts can arise between two smart people man, how's that not obvious? Yes, there can be rash, dumb decisions made by characters too, but they should have a better explanations than "so that the story progresses" , that is writing 101.
