Kedah is so underrated. One fact that many even Malaysians do not know, Kedah has a very long history that begins around 788BC. That is more than 2,800 years ago! The Kingdom/Sultanate of Kedah is one of the oldest in the world with just a single dynasty. It is still the same royal family that ruled Kedah for almost two millennia! Just hope that the federal government of Malaysia will give more support in promoting and building more infrastructures for tourism in Kedah. The historical sites - though wayyy older - are very much neglected as compared to the colonial cities of Penang and Melaka.

I am in Alor Setar right now and the city absolutely surprised me positively. I came here with no expectations at all, but the vibe of the city is just so nice, and it actually has a lot of interesting places to see like the Menara Alor Setar, the Rumah Merdeka, the Rumah Mahathir (my favorite place in this city actually, and it seemed you skipped it so you have to go back to Alor Setar) and the Masijid Zahir is absolutely gorgeous. But most importantly the people are so kind and friendly, even multiple locals gave me rides to places I wanted to see, so I didnt need a Grab. This never happened to me in any other Malaysian city. I absolutely love this city. Also I wanna give a shoutout to Wokman Bakery, their baked goods are extremely delicious and really cheap at the same time. I just wish they did something about all the stray dogs in the city center, it‘s too much of them.

Finally you arrive to the Northern Region of Malaysia. I believe you will enjoy if you able to make it to the east coast (kelantan, terengganu, pahang). It had a rural area vibe. Nasi Kerabu is an example a wise choice for vegetarian as it is not necessary to have fish or chicken or meat in it, it just an option for side dish. They can choose lada solok as side dish. Plus they also just can googled vegetarian restaurant offered in there. I've just checked, bet they can easily find their food there.😊☺

Even if you don't googled, I bet you can also easily find many vegetarian choice offered there. For example Nasi Kerabu which is specialized identic food of Kelantan. "Kerabu" is like "the mixed pieces of variety vege" so it is a must try, then it will be mixed on the special blue rice to be called Nasi Kerabu. You can add on "lada solok" for side dish. It is a choice to add chicken or fish for side dish but the basic of nasi kerabu is not necessary to have that. It is an option so you can choose lada solok for vegetarian option.

If you in Alor Setar, surely you will aware of Gunung Jerai or Kedah Peak. On southern side of Gunung Jerai, located Sungai Batu Archeological site, the birth site of Kedah since 700 BC. Sungai Batu at Bujang Valley, besides Merbok River is the capital of Old Kedah-Langkasuka Kingdom since 700 BC and also the Royal City for the Kingdom of Srivijaya. On modern era, Kedah Airport is the first international airport in Malaysia where in 1924, the airstrip was the staging airport for KLM East Indies route from Amsterdam to Batavia (Jakarta). During World War II, town of Jitra, 10 km north of Alor Setar was the first line of defence for the British military, the 11th Indian Division to face the invading Japanese Imperial Army moved from Singgora, Thailand to Singapore.

Alor Setar (used to be spelled Alor Star during British colonial times), my home town. I was raised here though I was born in Sik (a remote part of Kedah on Thai-Malaysia border). I was schooled here from age 7 until I was 17, at 18 I moved to KL-Selangor for further education, and then on to the US. Places like Masjid Zahir, Balai Besar, the Town Squrae, China Town (Pekan China), Pekan Rabu etc used to be childhood playgrounds. I now reside in Selangor but always visit my mom, siblings and other relatives in Alor Setar, Kedah. Many people told me Alor Setar is the most boring town in Malaysia, nothing to do here. It didn't hurt me, I accepted it. If they think my hometown is boring, then it is to them. But Alor Setar is never boring to me, it was my home, still is. Btw, you should try Nasi Ulam (Herbal Rice). one of Kedah specialties. 20 types of herbs shredded and mixed raw with white rice plus the seasonings. You should visit SAHC (Sultan Abdul hamid College), Kedah's first and oldest English-language secondary school, my school too, most of Kedah dignitaries, including royal family, received their early education here.

The history id very rich, and you can visit the archaeology site/s in Merbok. You will be blown away with the history facts. Merbok also offers beautiful mangrove sites, being taken care by some government agencies. You can experience the boat house along the Merbok river @ Houseboat Bakau Hijau and eat fresh oysters! Breed by the locals at the houseboat! Bakau Hijau means Green Mangrove. If you are still in Kedah, you ought to go to Merbok. Oh yes, we have a candi in Merbok! Candi is like a temple, like the ones in Bali. These temples were built probably by the early Hindus. Merbok is amazingly interesting....no regrets! ENJOY KEDAH!

Kedah is nice for its countryside vibe and views, and for its cheap cheap food. But since you two are vegetarians, it's a bit hard to recommend food stuff. Idk if you take milk and eggs or not. Some do, some don't. If you do take eggs, and I've seen you do like _roti canai,_ then you must try _roti sarang burung_ that is wayyy more delicious than _roti canai._ Another thing you must try is traditional malay _ulam-ulam_ together with its dip. _Ulam_ is traditional malay side dishes of raw greens, or sometimes blanched, eaten with their respective dips. Examples of popular raw greens: _ulam raja_ (most popular), _timun_ (cucumber, sliced) Examples of popular blanched greens: _bendi_ (okra), _pucuk ubi_ (cassava leaves), _pucuk betik_ (papaya leaves) The traditional dips: _sambal belacan_ (fermented shrimp paste), _sambal tempoyak_ (fermented durian paste), _kicap cili potong_ (cut chillis in soy sauce), _air asam_ (tamarind juice). Sometimes when we have _kuah kacang,_ the peanut sauce for satay or _nasi impit_ (rice cakes), this can also be a dip for the _ulam_ (the indonesians specifically have this combination in their _gado gado_ and we do not want to _gaduh_ too much with our neighbors, so we're okay with it hehe). But for us these are side dishes accompanying our main meal of white rice plus the main protein dish. The challenge is to recommend to you that protein dish which has to be non animal, and I could only think of _tauhu_ (beancurd) or javanese malay's _tempe_ (wafer thin fermented soy bean). Good luck exploring, have fun and stay safe! 👍

kedah is one of the oldest kingdoms on earth with cambodia. in fact cambodia, kedah, aceh in sumatra, the philippines, east indonesia, and oceania are culturally and historically linked. tunku abdul rahman, father of malaysian independence and first prime minister, is the greatest kedahan.
