I find it surprising that when praising Area Zero you didn’t mention that when you initially go there for the story you CAN’T jump, they take away Koraidon/Miraidon for your first journey down there, I think that’s because they wanted to create a level of tension that would be severely diminished if you could just glide over to the various research bases and press the locks in a few minutes, the freedom of the open world style has essentially removed puzzles from the games and this was their closest attempt to bring back slower more methodical movement and exploration, even if it was just for one area
@droomish1Күн бұрын
great point! I remember that feeling so odd, but not in any real negative way, just compared to the rest of the game. I think I was so consumed at that point by the physical architecture aspect that that first impression slipped my mind

I really appreciate how this is a love letter to the past and present with an eye to the future. It’s easy to fall into bemoaning how they haven’t quite ironed out an open world design that maximizes what open exploration and verticality can bring when they had achieved really tight linear worlds. But you can see where places like Oni Mountain or Area Zero have this promise of dungeons you can go in, out, up, and down with little nooks to discover and weird 3D shapes to emphasize the fantastical nature of the Pokémon world.

@@rushxanthemtcg5607 Your "disagreement" doesn't contradict any of the aforementioned points. A lot of Sc/Vi and LA are exactly what you stated; in both games, there are also several segments and set pieces that allude to the vision of a promising future, sections of the game that almost amount to something extremely promising to the future of the franchise. These sorts of things exist in many of the generations, but the Switch titles are the most jarring in the contradiction of potential and disappointment. I, personally, very much enjoyed both games, and am excited for the upcoming games for the reasons previously discussed. If you're not, that's fine, but it's silly to ignore the existence of promise and innovation in the recent games.

The way Gen 3 games handle their 'height' is very interesting, and completely counterintuitive. It's kinda hard to explain, but it's worth looking into, you can use a tool like Porymap to see how it's done. The game keeps track of every tile's height, to ensure that even if 2 adjacent tiles are both accessible (not solid like a tree), but at a different height, you can't go from one to the other. You'd think the height of a tile goes up by 1 if you've crossed stairs, but no. Most of the time, that doesn't happen at all. Only if that 'zone' of height actually has any tiles adjacent to what would be a lower height, without any blocked-tiles in between as border/buffer, is the height increased. You can only surf from height 3, also, and the way the suspension bridges are done is also quite interesting.

I never thought I'd say this, but I think we need to go back. I think we need to lose the ability to jump, or at least SEVERELY nerf it, so that Gamefreak can design routes and caves in the maze-like way they used to. I miss it. I think we have too much freedom of movement... it makes the terrain trivial. It makes routing impossible. I want the world to feel like a real, huge world that stretches beyond what I can see, beyond what I can reach, not like a giant sandbox to jump and fly over. I need that mystique back. I think the new open-world hyper-maneuverable format makes it really hard for them to make any place feel like secret area you gotta work to discover. It's still possible, and I'm sure there are a couple of examples, but... It's just not easy to design areas like that when you can move so freely in any direction, especially vertical. That said, the examples you gave here of the places that make the strongest use of the new open-world format are a compelling counterpoint, those areas all did stand out as locations that truly did benefit from the change, and couldn't exist without it. I hope that, going forward, if we do retain this level of freedom of movement, we see more areas like those, that feel intentionally designed. At the very least though, I think they need to create obstacles that really truly do act as obstacles- maybe if we could only jump a couple feet up, rather than like, 20 feet in the air, that may give them the ability to find a middleground between the two styles.

@jmcbango2 күн бұрын
I agree with you wholeheartedly, but I also feel that the team at Game Freak does not know how to design compelling 3D spaces. I don't feel that we need to go back, but rather that Pokemon should go the way of the Zelda series: simultaneously developing 3D open-world adventures alongside the classic 2D style that we know and love. This would give them the time to hone their craft when it comes to filling out an open world that actually feels exciting to explore, while also innovating on concepts introduced in the limited 2D space of the older gens

Seeingall the nuances and details you showed, I'll not be surprised if Game Freak take off this fature next Gen due to the complications it brings, instead of trying to adapt to it. I would love to see some new era of Pokémon, in which new 3D models with actual animations, new architecture involving the ability of the player to jump now (even if after some part the game) and new ideas of gym leaders. I hope, going forward, that 3d movement stays a thing in pokemon, but is slowed down a bit. I used to think the map felt small, but I eventually realized that the map isn't too small, the player is too big. With the combination of easy fast travel and miraidon/koraidon, you're rarely more than 20 seconds away from any location. You can reach a point where traversal becomes an afterthought, which isn't good for a open world game. If your game is open world, getting from point a to point b should be the star of the show, not something you can ignore in the late game

I understood everything that was said. But the fact that these games were not given the time for their split teams to develop and polish these games into a “Nintendo seal of not apologizing publicly for a lack of quality control” makes feeling the impact really hard without cringing at the contrast. “Magnificent Area Zero” while the deeper area reveals itself early due to clipping. Or that the first time through area zero forces you to not jump and just miss out on explorable areas. Game feel was accomplished, but content density, visual presentation, and game design were not. Guess I’ll go pirate gen 3 now because it still hasn’t arrived on switch online with Pokemon home compatibility (free money).
