As much as I enjoy your videos, the endings are always the icing on the cake. The relationship you two share is just great. Mrs. Jeff is almost always watching you as you speak, nodding, frowning, just providing a lot of body language. Then you Jeff, you do the same thing. Nicely done - and I admit I am truly looking forward to the first go-round on the body to chassis hookup.

Top Tip for you : the easiest and fastest way for removing old big rivets from old chassis is to get yourself a heavy duty air hammer/chisel with one pointy tip and one chisel blade, take off the rivet head with the chisel blade and punch it out with the pointy tip, I did that with a similar old truck frame and each rivet wont take me more than few seconds to remove. Mind you to get the heavy duty air hammer (has longer head from regular air hammer).

Speedy work Jeff. Put some waxoil or something in the void between those inner roof panels so the condensation doesn’t rust them out again.

I think people can now appreciate why body off restorations or engine swap and custom builds aee soooooo expensive. The sheer amount of man-hours to fabricate trumps the cost of materials by far..... As a loose start we used to estimate cost of materials/hardware x 3,5 to come up with a starter estimate...... Great job as always and enjoyable to watch with your explanations as you go......

I've also seen people tig panels onto a car in place of a spot welder, which is really handy to avoid drilling holes and grinding the welds down after most people fit new/repair panels. Worth giving it a try if you have overlapping panels

Jeff, I think you will find that 53' Fords in "oz " still used the side valve engine. Around Bowral in the 60's there was a chap that had VW with a Porsche motor that was a very nice machine .Don't know what happened to it.

Jeff, have you noticed that the rain gutter over the windshield is bent up a bit on the driver's side? I had a thought, perish me; loose the entire gutter above the windshield and make one large new metal repair to join the windshield frame to the roof? Include a fabricated doubler with a stiffening shape spot welded to the inside? It's your ride; I can't imagine you want to be riding into a rainstorm with Missus along, AC or not. Having looked, a roof repop might be had from the US, but the W/S frame isn't. NO joy; hence my thought to make it shape as one piece and add some additional stiffness to the back. That will give you the finished shape your inside header needs to have. If you plan to AC the truck the ceiling will need insulation and likely a header of some kind. Forgive my intrusion- you are rockin' on a rust pile. I'll shut up till the Missus has her say. I did not ever know Henry was a used car peddler! That explains a lot of later things!

Hi Jeff, I don't remember - is the roof too far rusted to bring back to life? If not, rather than trying to fabricate and weld in a new roof, you could try to remove the dents. Carter Auto Restyling channel will give you some great tips for this job. I can't speak from experience as I have none, but it would seem that slow and steady progress is the way to tackle a job like this. And if it doesn't work, it's simply back to plan A 😀

Hi Jeff. To reduce heat soak into grinding down MIG welds try use some carbide burrs bits. They are extremely effective compared to flap or grinding discs. They seem to cut off the hard MIG welds instead of abrasion. Keep up the good work

A trick to getting POR15 off your hands/skin a bit faster is to rub in moisturizer multiple times a day. It softens up the Por15 so it wears off faster. It might sound funny, but worked for me.

Back the good side with brass or copper flat form the good face so no excess buildup of mig weld and less grinding .. plus no need to remove excess weld and risk thinner panel syndromes.. Use stick welder to spot and plug weld.. That way you don’t leave excess buildup and ugly welds.. I can spot weld a panel butt joint as easily as mig spot weld. It’s all about rod thickness and duration of weld and heat dispersion.. backing with flat brass plate is a great way to learn the tipping point to excess heat and molten weld drop..

Agree with your assesment of MIG versus TIG welding. All I can add is that TIG is not ideal when performing 'cut and butt' welds on large relatively flat panels where the likelihood of distortion is high. In such cases - using YT Fitzee's 'judicious' MIG spot weld technique is preferable - a technique that minimises heat and hence distortion of the panel. However, I only wish I could MIG weld as well as Fitzee - just need more practice.

This new project with sheet metal and body work came very timely since a have some body work on my 73 Ford Granada that I would like to tackle. Seeing that it is doable if you take your time and brake down the job in bits. Doing bit by bit. And without being a master fabricator even though Mr Jeff is very skilled. He has quite a few tools though that would be handy. I have to see how my project progresse ,,tools etc being inspired by Mr Jeff. 🙂 Great episode. 👍

Also if you don’t wipe the clean the POR15 can lid and sealing surface good luck ever opening it again. From now on you will need to drill holes in the lid. Using this method works well for me. Further never paint straight from the tin as you can contaminate the paint.

Hi Jeff, may I suggest the introduction of Everdure for rust repair. A nickel brass rod used with tig that makes small hole repair easier without the flux of brazing but with great flow and less temperature (heat) when material is to thin to weld but still substantial enough to keep. Best of luck Pal...
