The second one made me lol! new intro as well, good for you! I realized while I watched you tear apart the Datsun's front, I was smiling. True happiness here with this video!

Great video, can't wait for next installment. Wow Jeff a new press, needing a lift, etc, etc... You're going to need a larger garage. I think a 4-5 stall building would be about right. Make it big enough for an unobstructed workbench. I noticed a subtle raising of Mrs. Jeff's eyebrows at about the 13:25 mark, while you were waxing on about how you can't wait to get into the next project and how much fun it's going to be. She's probably thinking "Oh yeah so much fun, I can't wait either." Love the videos.

I worked at a Datsun dealer here in the states back in 1978 - 1979 in the parts department. I almost bought a 240 but the guy sold it. I was a few hundred bucks shy of the 4000 thousand dollars he was asking. But I did all right I ended up buying a American motors 1968 AMX 343 4 barrel 4 speed with sport package. The dealership was Datsun AMC and Jeep. So I had really good acess to parts. I would still grab a 240 if I had a chance at a good one. But there not in abundance.

Great choice for a new project. I've always had a soft spot for the Z-cars. Paint wise I'd look at the red, white and blue BRE livery from the seventies...
@HomeBuiltByJeff

I don't know about the race livery on this one. Interestingly I only recently learned about Peter Brock (the B in BRE) in the US. In Australia, our Peter Brock was the greatest racing driver in Aus history. He still holds the record for the most Bathurst wins.

Ecosse57 both Pete Brocks are legends! BRE Pete had an amazing start to his career working for Shelby and pretty much designing the Daytona Coupe off of primitive aero knowledge the Germans had gathered during WW2, he read the books and drew a body to fit a AC cobra frame and they went seconds faster in their first test runs out in Riverside I think, and then founded BRE in 65 and is still designing car trailers today that are probably the nicest in the market!! lol

Hi Jeff - FWIW: I have 'always' applied a touch of grease when replacing bearings, not so much to aid the installation but moreso to assist in the prevention of the two metals fusing between change-overs etc. Also - I don't work on cars - only fine Italian thoroughbred motorcycles :-)

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but I usually take the old race and cut a slit in it and use that to press the new race in, with a socket on top of the old one. It tends to keep the race aligned and makes things that little bit easier
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
Someone else mentioned to grind the old race down a bit, not to cut a slot. That would be easier, but does the slotted race flare out when you try to press it with a slightly smaller socket?
@tx5brent
@tx5brent 6 жыл бұрын
If you use the slotted race taper side down then you wont have that issue and it will give your socket a larger area to push against. I have never had an issue with them sticking, worst case scenario a little tap with a hammer will usually free them.

Press in the new race with the old that you have ground down a bit (so it dont stick). Also you need to tighten the front bearings more. grab the wheel and rock it, you should only feel a very small play.

You are supposed to cool down bearing and warm up hub before you press bearing in. Best without grease on surfaces.

@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
I have now learned that is the way I should have done it.
@p3l1k44n1
@p3l1k44n1 6 жыл бұрын
Bearings are supposed to be pressed down dry and you should spray brake clean to get all the oils and dirt out.. Lubing it will cause premature wear and wobble. Might even damage stuff. Many know the term "Spun the bearing"...
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
I wish I knew that before hand...
@p3l1k44n1
@p3l1k44n1 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah.. Sorry to bring the bad news but.. All bearings are pressed in dry so the friction will "glue" the bearing in so when you get high load situations of driving fast, the bearing will remain in place while letting only the ball bearings inside move in the tub of grease. If the bearing has a chance to spin due vibration, it may and will damage your wheel hub.. Which is horrible considering the age and parts scarcity of the car. Well, since you already did it, you could just paint a white mark on the bearing and the hub to see if it starts to spin.. As long as the white line shows no movement on the bearing components, you're fine. But when you see that the bearing has spun a little, take it off immediately.. My source of knowledge, i changed a wheel bearing to a toyota celica and the bearing had spun because the previous owner oiled it.. The wheel hub shaft was 2mm's worn down so you could imagine, the bearing clatter was LOUD.

abit over the top with the grease filler thingig, but then again i trained at the danish rail ways, so learnd to do by hand, one importent thing is don´t mix new berings cause they are maid to fit together, so mixing the could get worn faster, was hoping you put miss Jeff in the porsche going wroom wroom as you pushed it he he keep up the good work

Every one is sheepish about using the L28 naturally aspirated. I'm building two resto modded Z cars. A '73 and a '78.both using ,L28's with 240Z carbs headers very mild cam, electronic ignition. I've stripped both cars down,side by side,I've removed everything I can off the 280 chassis the 240 doesn't have,literally cutting off brackets ,plating reinforcements ,every thing the 240 doesn't have.. To get the weight down.Also the 280 has been converted to 240 tail lights and turn signals. And I am fabricating standard 240z dash in fiber glass.I live in Florida so both cars will get the largest AC units I can fit under the dash . Using racing seats with both seats together weigh less then one stock seat. Good Street cars with additude. No LS swaps or GTR motors,just old school fun driving cars.Im only impressing myself. No turbos .just dropped suspension ,7x15 wheels 205 60 tires to keep the steering light and not over load the suspension. No track days,just a fun car to drive, for me to, look at ! One will be mine the other will be my step daughter's ,as she has had one in her ,video race car garage for years as her dream car. So I surprised her with her knowing I'm building her ,her own. Interesting thing to me was, she was shocked at the actual size of the car in person,it didn't dawn on me till that moment,she only knew the car as a video game car, she never saw an actual Z car in person . Great solid car you have there truely unbelievable just how solid your car is. Great find for sure.!!!

The best thing I purchased for wheel bearings, etc was this set on ebay. www.ebay.com.au/itm/51Pc-Custom-Built-Bearing-Discs-Pull-Press-Sleeve-Bushing-Seal-Driver-Tool-Kit-/112556026913?hash=item1a34dcac21:g:wjQAAOSwXq5ZsdvS have not had any bearings 'kick out' since

All that time and energy to build by yourself this S30 just to sell it? Brother life is way to short to waste and these builds are a waste of your time unless your making a millions from Google.
