Over the years I've used the LX3, LX5 & LX100 and they have all been really great cameras with all the controls and photographer needs and really excellent. v fast leica lenses (lx100 f1.2 at shortest focal length), & they have all has phenomenal macro modes. Panasonic colour science is maybe the most underrated. I particularly like the multi-aspect ratio feature on the lx100 which switches between 3:2, 16:9, 1:1, 4:3, this leads to the camera being advertised as a 12MP camera which is true regarding the output but it is being read from a 16mp sensor (same as GH4 i think), meaning the quality is much higher than you would expect from a 12mp. When buying used they are sometimes listed as 12mp which tend to attract less attention if you're looking for a deal. Anyway, there is an ver ii which is 17mp & much more expensive. This is my daily carry and has been for years.

Hi I am in my 70's and have had in the past (just at start of pandemic) bought an Olympus Pen 10 with 3 different lens. With the view to start taking better photographs. THEN we went full into the pandemic so could not go out to use it. Fortunately we lived next to a farm so had something to take photos of. I have a slight tremor in my hands and RA and had a big problem trying to change lens all the time. So I sold all of it. Am now looking for something maybe the size of the Pen 10 but no bigger but not changing lens. I looked at the LX100 mark 2 cos I thought I could have a play with the settings etc and learn them. I would like to photograph by beaches, in woods (birds and plants etc), so need one with a good zoom for bit of distance, and touchscreen focus (rather than turning small dial), good stabilisation, macro, different scenes etc etc. I know that the Lumix LX100's do have a dust problem, so I might have to not consider this one. Do you have any ideas please as to what camera would be good for me with needing all these things please, and not too expensive Please?? I live in UK and there are hardly any camera shops anymore that I can go to and hold the camera to see if awkward for me. Plus hardly any cameras about unless you want the changing lens ones, which no good for me. I have been looking all this year but still stuck.
@GeorgeHolden2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andria, thanks so much for commenting and always great to meet another UK photographer! Happy to help as much as I can, I think something like the Pen series is a good option, luckily with the same lens mount Panasonic has the Lumix GX7, 8 and 9 series. The GX9 being the most recent but there are deals to be had on the GX7 with Wilkinson camera or on MPB for less than £200 - then it would be down to your choice of lens. Because it is a micro four thirds lens system like the Pen, you have a choice of quite small and light lenses that achieve a longer zoom. The GX7 also has touchscreen as you mentioned and in body stabilization which will keep photos and video stabilized. I hope this helps!

The battery is going bad, and it's only 12mp (IIRC) but it's also a tiny sensor and 12 yrs old. I'd say the two reasons for me, that I'd want a $200 camera over a $3,000 camera is replacement cost. If you damage or otherwise "lose" (either to theft or you actually leave it somewhere) a $200 camera that's one thing, but a $3,000 camera would make you feel terrible. Second, the LX100 is small e nough you could probably put it into a coat pocket and always have it with you. Not quite so with the higher end bodies, and especially FF cameras. Plus having a camear that's instantly ready all the time is important for street photography (this can be done wit ha regular interchangable lens camera, but if you're switching lenses or attaching the lens, you can miss shots). With a camera with an integrated lens you don't have to think about lenses. Plus as you sort of eluded to, it may be harder to get into things with a full-sized FF camera versus a small P&S type camera.

It's good to hear your opinion of the LX100, especially considering you shoot something so much newer and advanced. I've had mine now for about 3 years and I love it. The lens is so damn sharp and the colour science is lovely too. I love the JPEGs straight out of camera but the quality and level of information from the RAW files is pretty amazing. I've alway felt this camera punches way about its weight and until this year's, it regularly sold for over £300 used. I'm unsure why it's dropped in price by so much. Mine still gets used quite often but recently I've been taking out my little Panasonic GM1 with the 17mm pancake lens instead, as it slips into my jeans pocket. The LX100 is an astounding piece of kit and very highly recommended.

I've read that getting dust on the sensor is a major issue for the LX100
@hedydd22 жыл бұрын
A GX80 may be a better cheapish used choice because the sensor is accessible, it has ibis and an effective dust shedding system plus a full touchscreen. The kit lens is great but it does open the opportunity to add more lenses, of which there must be near 100 available models commonly available new and used. The critical factor is the dust issue of course. Due to this very real risk, i would choose the GX80 over the LX100 every single time even if it cost a bit more. There is no easy or cheap way to clean the LX100 sensor. £230 plus £100 for a lens with warranties from a big used camera dealer in the uk for the GX80. Yes, more expensive but still very low budget. £450 new.

Richtig.. Selbst Second Hand kostet in Deutschland 400-500€!!
@lolaa22002 жыл бұрын
I think most people selling second hand are not really concions when they price their used gear, digital gear fade quick and lot people can't handle that fact. My feeling is when they are priced correctly they sell quickly so not stay on the website for long, when people try to overprice they stay on list much longer if not until expiration. So that statistically you will see much more of the overpriced than the fair priced. In result that gives a false impression of the true second hand value that should be based on the price of item actually sold not the listed ones. That i think create a bad feedback loop as people who want to sell see lot of similar item at a actually overpriced mark and use that as reinforcement clue to think they are right with their (over)pricing. Back in the day when you where selling in brick and mortar shops there was a third party to tell you that the price you hope to sell often is just not in line with reality, on listing website there is no more that gatekeeper. I see that in many fields, not just photo gear, that kinda kill second hand market unfortunately.

The only thing I didn't like about my LX100, and this ultimately led me to flipping it despite being a petty reason, is I'm not a fan of the telescopic lens. I am a fan of the lens, its Leica glass made for the Leica iteration that you get to enjoy on the Panasonic version for a massive amount less in price. It covers most of the primes I would have with a small camera with step zoom to give the "bag of primes" feeling snapping to each popular focal length. I just hate the look of telescopic lenses, the way it sticks out with a narrow shape bothers me and at least the LX100 II did have possible dust issues due to the moving lens. After flipping mine, I grabbed an Olympus E-P5 before they've seen some recent popularity when they were deemed just old enough to be worthless and lame for 300 USD matching 17mm included. I also have a 15mm PanaLeica, but that generally stays on my GX85 due to the Aperture ring only working on Panasonic bodies unless new Olympus ones were updated. The E-PL7 or E-M10.II/III with a 14 or 20mm Lumix lens (28/40mm equivalent) tossed on is a great bit of kit, but you would be committing to MFT at that point, even if it's a relatively small amount. Not a big loss, MFT is great for a travel/pocket camera with the pancakes; even haters will admit that is true. Still, that 300-400 could be used towards a Fuji, Canon, whatever you wanted to go, maybe even a Leica lens cap if you're lucky.

My 2 cents: the LX100 is indeed a nice camera. I have owned it for some 6 years and have taken really good photos. I love the speedy electronic shutter and the mechanical buttons on the body and the classic looks. But... let's compare apples to apples. The camera has an average AF, its zoom lens sucks in dust like a vacuum cleaner and you can't dismount the lens to clean the sensor. Taking street photos with this camera is a bit of a pain if you compare it to Ricoh GR or Fuji X100 series - because the lens zooms out when the camera is turned on and its zoom mechanism tends to be slow. The camera is too small to fit comfortably in the hand and too big (esp. with the lens zoomed out) to fit in your pocket - compare Ricoh GR III that is smaller than most smartphones and Fuji x100 that fits in the hand much better than the LX100. Finally, the pictures are not that fantastic from the LX100, Ricoh and Fuji beat the LX100 hands down on image quality. So, while it's still a pretty capable camera, the LX100 has its own flaws that should be kept in mind while comparing it to other classics.

Doing street photography could be dangerous sometimes, you walk into the empty/lonely street, small alley, slump area where the camera could get robbed/stolen. I'm not confident enough to bring expensive camera & lenses pair. I'll get small used cheap camera, probably old Olympus PEN camera.

I used a Lumix GX-1 for street photography the past two years. It was awesome. I now use the GX-9 for that purpose. No need to spend tons of money on a Street camera. Nobody wants to be noticed shooting on the streets. Image quality is NOT the primary reason to pick a camera here.

You could get a used lx100 ii for under £500 on ebay which its a great deal and image wise would rival the a7c, unfortunately its onboard audio lets it down for videography unless you use a separate recorder. I recently got a GX9+12-32 for £370, 25mm t1.4 for £180 (50mm equivalent), 12-35 t2.8 ii for £330 (24-70 equivalent), 35-100 t2.8 ii for £380 (70-200 equivalent). I think its a great tiny all around kit collection I separately bought a g90+14-140 ii for £600 (24-280 equivalent). The lense is an amazing travel lens but isn't useful for me so I dont plan on keeping it which is why i bought the lenses above. I can trade in both for over £600 so i'm happy that i'll get more than what I paid for it. Also got a g9 for £500. All have better stabilisation that any full frame camera and also benefit from dual IS making the benefit even more noticable. Only weakness is that I dont like going over iso 3200 M4/3 has some real camera body and lens bargains right now and its a relatively cheap and easy way to satisfy G.A.S My next target is the Leica 12-60 T2.8-4 for around £350 and to sell off either the g90 or g9.

That sounds great! Yes I've had full MFT kits in the past with a GH5 but for my professional work I couldn't deal without full frame and improved low light in tight situations.
