WHY Vader's Eyes Kept Changing in Obi-Wan Kenobi Fight (ANAKIN)

When Vader fought Obi-Wan Kenobi, and had his helmet opened on the left side (unlike Ahsoka vs Vader who opened it on the right), we see Anakin's conflict with the dark side as his eyes shift from Blue to Sith yellow / red.
I feel this is a perfect portrayal of Vader's conflict within the darkside itself, even as Sidious / Palpatine explains it perfectly to him on Mustafar: "Perhaps your feelings for your old master have you weakened".
I think this is exactly what is happening where Anakin can't fully commit to the dark side when he's in front of Kenobi.

The way Ewen looks so heartbroken seeing what’s left of Anakin for the first time, you see all the love and hurt he feels because he loves Anakin still. One thing I wish, I wish Obi Wan would have mentioned Padme, to see that side of Vader break for Padme, cuz you’re right…he probably just wants to crumble and cry about his lost wife. Anakin was always a sentimental guy, who really only cared about his mom and his wife.
@MrPenguin117
@MrPenguin117 Жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking! However, if he mentioned Padme at all, he would do one of two things! 1: He would probably be infuriated and probably would want to kill Obi Wan even more. He would be conflicted and he wouldn’t even need his life support from his suit to kill him because of all that rage in his mind. 2: He would see the good again. If this was to happen then he would most likely overthrow the Emperor because he now would realize the Emperor had brainwashed him and made him think that Anakin was the one who killed Padme when it was actually the Emperor. Also, Luke’s training probably would not happen and we wouldn’t of learned of Leia or Han or Lando or whoever.

And he did care about Obi-Wan. Anakin hated Emperor Palpatine with passion. But all Anakin had left was the dark lord of the sith whom he spent most of his time trying to convince that there was none of Anakin skywalker left and he was totally Darth Vader. Mostly out of fear probably,the biggest difference between Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader was that Anakin knew what he was doing was wrong and sometimes didn’t like it.

It seems like the apology served as a catalyst for major internal conflict. Anakin had never heard such an honest and open expression of repentance, asking forgiveness from Obi-Wan, or the Jedi Order, and one can easily imagine how far that would have gone if he had heard something like that before he turned. Obi-Wan had done his best with a hand stacked against him, training Anakin, and if he had let Anakin see that insecurity, alongside his love for him and desire to raise him well, this would all have gone differently, perhaps. I can only imagine thoughts like that causing Vader deep conflict.

I really like that besides the eyes and the reflection of the saber changing color, Vader also sheds a tear with Obi Wan then it transforms into a sadistic smile. An interpretation I heard on Twitter of this scene that I really like is that when Vader tells Kenobi “I am not your failure Obi Wan, you didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker, I did” He’s speaking both as Anakin to comfort his friend and master but also as Vader to taunt Obi Wan and to dismiss any believes that anybody other than Vader himself is what killed Anakin and created Vader if that makes any sense

I love it that we have so many little details in this scene between Vader/Anakin and Obi-Wan. When he says "I am not your failure Obi-Wan" the light on his face is blue. It's literally like Anakin is accepting Obi-Wans apology and telling him that it's not his fault. And then it becomes red again when Vader returns, which shows how deep he was in the dark side during this time. If you then pay attention to the change in his voice and his eyes you can literally see that Anakin is not the same as Darth Vader. And the story with the destroyed helmet is interesting too. Obi-Wan got the left half of the helmet and Ahsoka the right half. Thus both could only see half of thee face/Anakin and both weren't able to save him. But Luke took off the helmet as a whole and was therefore the only one who could bring him back in the end. The helmet is a bit of a symbol that hides the side of Anakin that still exists. After that the Emperor did question him on his feelings. Maybe that was the small door opening up Luke needed to get to him in ROTJ - deep down Anakin/Darth Vader didn't want Luke turning over to the dark side.

Yes, agreed. The beauty of this moment is that it would represent the only time Anakin has ever really taken responsibility for his own actions, which would be a huge step in returning to the light. People love to hate on the Jedi for their mistakes with Anakin, but in the end, he was still a person with his own agency, and he made his own choices. He didn’t have to decide to respond the way he did. This flicker of possible admission, after blaming Obi-Wan, the Jedi, and everyone else for his problems, would mean a great deal for his character development.

Moreover i think he tries to let Vader persona take over as punishment for all the bad things Anakin has done and he is guilty of. Its like him saying i dont deserve to be Anakin, its Vader all i deserve to be. Imo the Vader persona was created out of resentment for all the terrible things Anakin did when he first became a Sith Lord. The Anakin persona is full of guilt and punishes himself by being Vader. The most powerful thing to come out of this show for me and one that actually adds a great deal to the characters we love (Anakin/ Vader and then Obi Wan), if you allow it to become your canon, is that dialogue between the two. Some of the most meaningful moments in fiction are actually the ones which leave room for interpretation! When Anakin/Vader tells Obi that he didn't kill Anakin, but he himself did it (after Obi apologized to him), it almost seems like there is the light side shining through, as if Anakin wants to lift Obi Wan of that burden, of that feeling of guilt. He himself is now taking responsibility for the way things went. I mean, was he really ready to kill Obi Wan? He wanted, but then again he didn't want to. After all he decided to bury him, instead of actually killing him in a way where he can be certain. He then walked away. On the other hand, it could be that telling Obi Wan that he (Vader) killed Anakin, is the dark side, his massive ego really embracing what he has become and owning that path, taking away from Obi Wan that he could possibly have had a part in shaping his future, telling him that he wasn't significant enough so he could have possibly done that, thereby trying to hurt him even more. I personally lean towards the former, also because of Hayden's voice when he said the part about Obi not having any part in it. His voice is soft and sad here. Then again, when he said "I did!" it's realy vadery and kind of evil. For the first part of the sentence his face is covered in blue light and only with the evil "I did" does it turn red. I don't know, maybe its both. The character stays ambivalent after all and holds sort of two peole. So who knows. Either way, seeing Anakin like this and hearing what he had to say, lifted the burden of guilt from Obi Wan and he could finally be free again. Very very powerful scene for me!

I think definitely the latter. Vader really wanted to believe so much that he was in control. Stemming from his lack of control with leaving his mother and having no father figure, being a slave again to the Jedi that abused Anakin's potential and let his mother die...and then not helping when he had visions of his own wife dying. Vader is a broken man who wants to belong...and those are the most easily manipulated.

Something I withdrew from Vader's connection to the dark side is that his conflict with himself can accurately be used to explain his actions over time. When he lost to Obi Wan at the end of Revenge of the Sith for example, he went into what is regarded as his "prime," where his anger connected him to the dark side the most as seen throughout the novels. During the Kenobi series, the interactions between Vader and Obi Wan caused Vader's connection to the dark side to weaken up until the final fight where Vader goes back into a rage (although not as tuned into the dark side as Palpatine senses). His rage is shown to still be present in Rogue One. Finally, when Vader kills Obi Wan in A New Hope, his rage subsides slightly, and along with the passing of time and learning of his children, his mental state becomes perfect for Luke to sway him back towards the light side. Although not perfect or likely intended, it is a neat look from a more psychological take. Just one of the many reasons I love the depth of Vader's character besides his sheer strength and appearance.

The turmoil going through Anakin/Vader during this scene was amazing. I saw the prequels in the theater, so you know what is going to eventually happen…but a part of you wants Anakin to never turn to the dark. I still remember someone yelling in the theater during the Tusken Raider scene. NOOOO ANAKIN!!!! So, to me this scene was brilliantly done. I absolutely love the detail of Vader's eyes changing and switching back and fourth between Anikan's Blue and Vader's Sith Yellow. It's a little detail that adds alot of depth to scenes where you do see them. Which is honestly why I feel like in Shards of the past, you did the Bacta Tank/no suit Vader acne better than in the show. It was over all just shot better and seeing his eyes change like that was just fantastic. I also thought it was interesting how you chose to go from yellow when he was scared to blue when he was more calm and focused. All around still shows what great work you did on the fan film.

It truly is poetic. Throughout his life after ep 3 he has nothing but Palpatine, and the dark side and its powers. Vader lost everything else anf Palpatine made sure vader always knew that. Vader only had one road he could walk on which was tapping into and studying the dark side to become stronger which he did, and slower anakin was dying out because what did he have left to exist for? Vader would submerge himself in the dark side meditation and revenge on Palpatine to keep anakin at bay and it worked but every now and then, it wasn't enough like in this moment.

It's interesting "how quickly" Anakin's eyes were able to turn "Sith yellow" in Revenge of the Sith, considering that he hadn't received any "Sith training" from the time Palpatine executed Order 66 to the time the audience sees his yellow eyes. I guess that a Force-sensitive's eyes "turn yellow" when they're full of negative emotions.

To be fair, Lucas himself clarified that balance in the Force meant the harmony of the light side, not a balance between light and dark. The Grey Jedi thing doesn’t really fit the way Lucas thought of the Force when he wrote the films. If Qui-Gon’s way is superior, it’s because he is more able to live in the light side than other Jedi, not because he lives between light and dark.

Great viewpoints. I agree. I've been watching, pause, watching, pause, over & over disecting the saber color reflections to the voice deflections, eye color changes to subtle differences in voice cadence ( Anakins differs from Vaders). These few minutes are brilliance by the writers & director. There are so many layers. "I am not your failure," was Anakin. But immediately after that was Vader. It's rare when one sees something on film that cannot be duplicated to a better degree in a book (book versions are usually better). They freaking nailed it.

Anakin definitely has the most interestingly complex character arcs in the entire Star Wars franchise. The reason why I say this is because in the prequels, it was inevitable that he will turn to the darkside to become Darth Vader. Even as a true fan of this franchise, I too find it hard to analyze both his and Vader's characters when it comes to interpreting both their identities from time to time.

I didn’t see a color switch happening between “You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker,” and “I did.” The lighting was the same throughout both, and his mood/ expression appeared to be the same as well. It is certainly possible that subconsciously the first part of that sentence was Anakin talking, but there is no explicit evidence for this. His expressions were different when he said “Anakin Skywalker is gone. I am what remains,” and “I am not your failure, Obi Wan.” He didn’t look evil as he was saying that. He looked hurt. In addition, the blue-red mix here was the same as when he had a more evil looking expression. So as much as it’s nice to think color had a purpose here, I’m not quite sure Disney really did try to be that detailed about the color symbolism. If they were, then I don’t think the color switches were at the right times during that interaction. If anything, it seems maybe the only symbolism was just red and blue mixing in general.

I thought there was a great opportunity missed by the writers when Palpatine addresses Vader's clarity of his intentions at the end, by not asking him right after, "and I wonder if you truly do want to kill Kenobi, Lord Vader". It would have "poetically rhymed" with Reva's question to Kenobi, asking him if he truly wanted to kill Anakin. Hinting that he (Kenobi), would be dead already if Vader was truly and fully dark side. Further establishing the point for the audience that Vader's failure is only because there is still some light left buried in him.

Palpatine almost never insults him or directly tells him to stop giving a damn about Obi-Wan or the Jedi, i dont think he really wants his Anakin persona completely gone off the picture, just be pushed away as much as Vader persona can be in charge but he wants the Anakin persona to still exist so that Vader can always be a lesser version of his true Sith self. Palpatine just pretends he cares about Vader's full connection to the dark force and him being truly evil when in reality he just doesnt want this to happen. Palpatine is like the bad teacher who wants his students to keep paying him money for the lessons he gives them so he pretends he teaches them a few things from time to time but in reality he just doesnt care to share knowledge with them.
