Why was it so difficult for non-force sensitives to wield a lightsaber?
The lightsaber was only ever really wielded by force sensitives, with everyone else often opting for a blaster or if a melee weapon was required a vibroblade. But why did not force sensitives such as Din Djarin and Sabine Wren find it so difficult to use a plasma blade, despite their exceptional combat training? While characters like Cad Bane have been seen using a lightsaber for a short while, without force sensitivity, it was extremely difficult for a wielder to master this weapon for a prolonged period. This was due to the sheer amount of energy rushing through the kyber crystal, which caused the plasma to have gyroscopic properties that could cause the blade to become unbalanced and seemingly fluctuate in weight. However, if one was to become intune with the rhythm of the kyber crystal through the force, lots of training or through cybernetic implants, the gyroscopic effects could be countered, allowing for a non-force sensitive to use a lightsaber.

Nobody in the canon ever says it gets heavier because of emotions. That's just people theorising, and I think it's wrong. Sabine is told that it's old and powerful in response to it being heavy, and I'm pretty sure this video is correct in that all lightsabers are heavy and unweildy at first to people who aren't connecting with the kyber crystal and controlling it.

@@Awcanny no it doesn't. Grevious can wield lightsaber because he was added cybernetic enhancement to have the supernatural reflex to be able to control lightsaber. His techniques are basically shock and awe, to catch the Jedis he's fighting off guard and finish them off as fast as he could before the Jedi can gain his/her composure. If somehow the Jedi Grevious is fighting does able to regain composure his next tactic is to run away. There's no mention at all about the lightsaber Grevious carries becomes heavier for him

Also, I believe that the source of why Non force users couldn't properly use light sabers is from older sources before Disney's great purge. I always thought that it was the plasma coming from the blade that was contained in a super dense magnetic field.

Thing is plasma blade is practically almost weightless, which makes it actually difficult to wield the blade without ever making the blade somehow touch any part of your own body. Compound it with how the light saber cutting edge is omni directional (meaning any side of the blade can cut) it's actually almost impossible for "normal" people to wield it without hurting themselves. There's no actual mention on how lightsaber weight can fluctuate. The explanation is actually metaphysical in which the force sensitiveness of Jedi/Sith is the very few things that can make you have the required reflex to move the lightsaber in a way that the plasma blade won't touch any part of your own body accidentally.

Look at the Illum segment of Jedi Fallen Order after Cal Kestis needed to forge/reforge his saberstaff. He has to find a new kyber crystal that in tune chose him. A Jedi and their crystal are in-sync. Force sensitives in general flow with one another. Not to mention the technology of the saber being unwieldy. In addition to the kyber crystal, the emitter and field generated to contain it all needs massive amounts of energy. Proto-sabers, precursor to modern lightsabers, required a hose and battery pack to use. Most saber duels of this era focused on disarmament than killing blows if I recall correctly

It also can be seen to resist Dark Vader when Vader tries to use Cal's own lightsaber to impale him. Cal is only grazed on his size. At that point, Cal was not strong enough to resist but his lightsaber definately saved him from serious injury.

Quite a few Jedi Sentinels carried blasters, but it was frowned upon by Guardians and Consulars, since Guardians believed that the only tool a Jedi needed was a Lightsaber, and most Consulars tried to avoid taking lives if possible, which led to them preferring the Lightsaber for its defensive options.

Imagine swinging a flashlight without crossing over any limbs. Yes you could do simple things like swing it, Han did so to cut open a Tonton. Anything beyond that, such as actually using it in combat, that takes exact understanding of where your arm is, where the blade is, where your body WILL be, where your foe WILL be, where your opponents weapons are and WILL be, where any object is if you want to avoid collateral damage... Using a normal sword is difficult, mastering it is extremely difficult. Now imagine using a sword that can chop your own hand off with a bad swing and is hard to stop due to a lack of weight. It's impossibly tough unless you can see everything like Jedi could.

Also, when the sword comes into contact with something, you know. This is why in combat, you are more even matched regardless of say physiques or sex. Now my Star Wars lore ain't the best. But I imagine to use a lightsaber it would be more difficult because you don't have these things. So you're likely going to put more force into your swings, so you're working harder. It's wouldn't be impossible to learn how to use one, but likely to be very difficult. And then it still wouldn't be great to go up against the Jedi/Sith, your best options there would be either: run, surrender or accept your fate. For people using blasters, get behind cover and shoot back. Lightsabers are pretty useless weapons, although they would work better as tools. Yes it is like Beat Saber or even using stuff like the Wii remote. But without the visual aid of the game to tell you you've hit something, how would you know?

I'm not big on star wars but. It seems like y'all missed the point of the video. He's not specifically referring to the dark saber he never talked about weight. But gyroscopic effect,this is science fiction but I guess that such an amount of energy concealed by a magnetic field being moved so fast could induce a physical resistance similar to a gyroscope that resists changes in movement ,also space wizards. If the force allows you to sense how that gyro effect acts when you this movement or another,you become better at it and faster ,a non force sensitive can still do it but with one less sense to help them

Actually there's no mention about such a thing about gyroscopic effect about lightsaber. But real life sword master have explained why lightsaber are very hard to be wield by normal people. The thing is heated plasma blade in real life is practically weightless, thus it would make it real hard to orient the blade in a way that it would not touch any part of your body. The usual explanation is for you to handle a flashlight, because lightsaber in weight distribution would be similar to a flashlight. Try wielding a flashlight like a lightsaber and try to not have any part of the beam to ever touch your body. Not to mention without the weight of the blade the momentum of your swings are now only dependant on your body, making it extra hard to actually swing a weightless blade to your intended target.

Also remember about point of balance, a weightless blade means the center of mass would be in the middle of your hilt, for most IRL swords that balance point is past the hilt especially for swords meant for cutting, while that center of mass retreats to hilt as swords become meant for thrusting.

Because a lot of people seem to lack media analysis let's connect a few dots: - Yes ones emotions and state of mind have an effect on wielding a lightsaber, it's because that influences ones connection with the blade through the force and is exactly why trained force users are more adept. They are trained to focus their thoughts or emotions into their movements through the crystal within the lightsaber and through the blade. Many untrained non-force users find this connection difficult, due to unfamiliarity with the force and focussing oneself through it so Lightsabers tend to feel a lot heavier. Focussed and trained individuals can still excel, such as Cad Bane and Grievous. - the Darksaber is not unique in this, but it is heavier, being of an older and uniquely shaped design. Other older blades (or those based upon older designs like Kylo Ren's) also tend to be heavier than newer sabers, even for force sensitives. There is still a 'weight' to the blades and older less refined blades feel heavier. - the Darksaber is also not sentient, just what??? It also wasn't designed to kill Jedi, it was designed by the first Mandolorian to become a Jedi, and later became a symbol of unification and leadership for the Mandolorians. The video is absolutely right in everything it said, except I guess the misuse of 'gyroscopic.' Makes sense as a synonymous effect but not as literal.

I miss legends explanation in that a Lightsaber actually has no weight in the blade so you can't "Feel" where the blade is unless you are intune with the force and the lightsaber, hence you're more likely to injure yourself

In Rebels, Sabine found it slighty heavy and as she got use to it, it lost weight. In Mando it weighed like 50 pounds and Din could even swing it. Which has veen shown many time before thats not how if works

As Din learns to better use the blade he will also connect with it and to him it will end up lighter. If that makes sense.

The darksaber has sentience. Even a force sensitive would struggle if they tried to just use it like a sword, even thought they wouldn’t. Then again, a force user would probably connect with the crystal on the inside of the darksaber, therefore bypassing/removing the heaviness feeling. A lightsaber is the textbook definition of a laser sword, so it doesn’t have sentience. Hence why non force users can use em as such.

When I was a boy, before the times of prequel comics and shows, it was thought that lightsabers were ludicrously heavy. Trusting in the force was needed so it could help you use one effectively in combat. We never saw someone swing one swiftly or acrobatically and every character held it low with two hands. Every character, that is, except for Darth Vader. He swung wide, fast, and with a single hand.

It’s more about connecting with the crystal. It’s a living entity, and you have to bond with it. Once Mando figures that out, he’ll be able to use it whenever he wants. You don’t need to be force sensitive, and you don’t need implants. You just need to understand what you’re wielding.

So here’s a thought, a lightsaber could only work as a tight loop of plasma shooting out of the hilt, and curving back down into the hilt. So basically the entire blade is spinning like a chainsaw. Fun physics quark, if you flip a spinning object double the torque will get applied back on you, which means that if you rotated the lightsaber the “weight” would fluctuate seemingly at random.

For the dark saber, it gets more heavy with every swing because the Khyber crystal for the dark saber isnt just a crystal, it let's the users emotions and thoughts go through it, so the more locked away your emotions and thoughts are, the heavy the blade gets

Fun Fact: The lightsaber was planned as a standard weapon for stormtroopers but since the effects were to expansive/difficult to make on a large scale they only made it for the main characters. Now it's such a signature weapon of jedi and sith that they need an in universe explanation why no one else uses it in order to not erode the coolness of jedi and sith. The Darksaber is an outlier. It is unique among all the sabers. Do not use it as a base line. In fact, the weightless* plasma blade is usually the opposite of how the Darksaber worked. Which poses its own problems. There used to be lore about sabers vibrating to a point where you needed the force to counteract it, but that's basically only shown up in one other place, so I generally disregard it. It really comes down to the fact that even with training, you need to be force sensitive to maximize the utility and minimize the limitations. You can swing clean through most things, but do you want to deflect blaster bolts? The latter requires the subconscious precog and reading of an opponent's emotions and intent.
