I think the simplest explanation is the best: the Emperor had lost both his patience and his faith in Humanity. Just try putting yourself in the Emperor's shoes. For thousands of years you have been trying to gently guide humanity while remaining unseen, because you have faith that one day humanity will get to a point where you dont need to help it anymore. For thousands of years, you have been patient because for every setback mankind has suffered it still manages to find a way forward. Finally you behold the Age of Prosperity, and as the scion of humanity surely you would feel like your great work is nearly done. Then, without warning, the Age of Strife happens, and overnight humanity loses almost all the progress it has made and for the next seven thousand years teeters on the brink of extinction while you sit isolated and helpless to do anything on Terra. If you were the Emperor, wouldn't you come to the conclusion that you can't stay on sidelines anymore? Wouldn't you decide the only way to get a job done right is to do it yourself? Wouldn't you finally give in to tens of thousands of years of pent-up frustration? Put yourself in the Emperor's shoes, and you will see he was more flawed and more human than you ever realized.

It is my view that the Emperor intended to capitalize on the Birth of Slannesh quieting the warp, making travel more reliable and faster. But when the Primarchs were stolen, his original plans are derailed and he had to start improvising. This is why he left the Imperial Webway for so late in the campaign, rather then as an opening move. FTL travel was good enough for the moment and he could not afford to be fighting his own sons and their inevitable empires. (See Ultramar) The Emperor's original plan against Chaos had to be set aside while the more material threats were eliminated and the Imperium itself (IE mankind's colony's) secured. With this well in hand, the Emperor moved to securing the alternate FTL system that would be required for when the warp inevitably became impossible to navigate again. Be it by the work of the chaos gods, the pre-stages of a new warp entity or simply the upheaval of humanity reaching the psychic 'level' of the Eldar. It had been the loss of FTL travel and resulting isolation that had destroyed humanity, where not even the Men of Iron could. It's reasonable to assume that the original plan was to develop the Primarchs and use their legions to carve out a small initial industrial base, then develop the Imperial Webway and use the Primarch lead Legions to seize the exit points across the galaxy. From there, the Imperium could simply sweep up anything in it's path as needed. Even a sudden turbulence in the warp that would cripple 'conventional' FTL could only cut the Imperium off from it's outer regions, while the 'core' region would always be connected through the webway and could ride out any FTL breaking warp storms in the future. It's a VERY long term plan, just like his Imperial Truth. Stamping out belief in the Chaos gods as something supernatural/divine to replace the conceptual view of them with one of 'warp xenos' would eventually cause their natures to shift to match. At least in theory. As humanity's contribution to (and thus influence over) the warp rose to overwhelming, even the potential birth of a new 'god' wouldn't destroy the Imperium thanks to having the Imperial Webway to fall back on. Thus even if his attempts failed and the Imperial Creed won mass support, the resulting warp entity would act as a champion of humanity in the warp, a sort of immaterial mirror to the Emperor. One that potentially the Emperor could hijack, consume or co-opt to further his own cause. Unfortunately for everyone, his long term plans ran into short term problems that tore them apart.
@PartigradeCannon7 жыл бұрын
It was rushed, initially at least, because in the aftermath of the Fall of the Eldar, lots of Xenos species would be scrambling for the scraps left in the wake of the Eldar's destruction. If he didn't secure humanity, then something like the Rangdan would move in.

@Kingneo00537 жыл бұрын
Personal theory. The Emperor rushed the Great Crusade because he wanted to end people's suffering as quickly as possible. One thing we forget is that the Emperor saw humanity at it's peak. Protected from all threat. Potentially wanting for nothing. Then saw all of it disappear when the age of strife occurred. Good people tore each other apart because there wasn't enough food, medicine, etc. for everyone because the means they used for that (trade with other planets) was cut. All that progress, goodness, etc. gone. Untold dying from the starvation alone. He was forced to watch this happen for thousands of years and could do nothing about it. And he knew that whatever was going down on Earth was also going down on all the untold millions of worlds that humanity had colonized. If he could sense the emotions of nearby people due to being a potent psyker (like the Eldar) it would make the suffering he saw that much worse. Especially if that sense range extended to other worlds/star systems (very possible once his power unlocked). All of a sudden he isn't just seeing people suffer, but he is feeling their pain, anguish, and desperation. Once he got a chance to do something he hit the ground running and refused to stop until he restored everything (unite all the colonies, transition the government into what it used to be, and begin rebuilding infrastructure).

It was rushed for the same reason that he dumped command to Horus after Ullunor. Hubris. The Emperor believed that his plans and ploys were absolute . This was a being who though he could get away with tricking and backstabbing the chaos gods. He was blind to the strife that permeated between his sons and how that could fracture the Imperium while he was away playing with the webway. Even if Horus had not turned there is a good chance there still would have been a civil war anyway. All due to a being that for too long had things go his way the Emperor was sick with victory disease.

I think in the end, The Emperor was just human like everyone else. While he did mean well for all of humanity he did not think through every single detail given how rushed the Crusade was and catastrophic the Horus Heresy after. To highlight these points, the book, The Last Church gives insight to this and that in the end, The Emperor was a well meaning ruler but became a tyrant given his belief was forced on the masses and not allowed to be chosen.

Mmm, I gotta disagree. A responsible and just ruler would ensure his people got along and minimise civil strife. Allowing more than one religion allows/causes more different subcultures to develop which inevitably results in humans hating each other. Just think about how much Catholics and Protestants dislike each other while remembering they worship the same god. Then remember they went to war once. Over what amounts to: "Hey, we dont want to do that stupid latin chanting prayer thing." Religious diversity isn't a good thing. Especialy not when you live in a universe where having faith of any kind makes literal demons stronger. The emperor wasn't a tyrant, he was truly looking out for the common man.
@JZStudios27 жыл бұрын
Meep Changeling I have to disagree given the context of The Last Church puts it very well that The Emperor was not perfect and did not think his philosophy all the way true. Even when destroying the church it was not because of proving the priest wrong but it was because he wanted it gone and that was that. And yes I am summarizing it, but the priest did warn that in the end, in his quest to destroy the gods he hated, he will end up replacing them and the rest is history. The reason I say The Emperor's logic was flawed was because he thought that science and logic would replace emotions that every human has. His thought of the perfect idea was not perfect given he excluded everything that made up a human, and in the great conversation between him and the priest, the priest did suggest that wouldn't the idea of knowing and safeguarding against chaos be a better attack then outright ignore it.
@ScaredTurtle6 жыл бұрын
Meep Changeling Do you think humans wouldn't come up with any number of reasons to hate, and fight each other if religion never existed?
@MeepChangeling6 жыл бұрын
They would, but they wouldn't depend on a core belief composed entirely of illogical bullshit, and as a result they would be much much easier to mitigate and or stamp out. Religion is indoctrinated into a young mind at the age when beliefs you from are extremely difficult or impossible to change because everything else you believe is founded on them. Because of how flawed religious beliefs are, they result in humans who have an extremely warped view of the world, leading to shittier humans than non-religious humans. There's scientific data on this.

People forget that everything that happened before the 40k setting was needed to occur in order to have the 40k setting. As in, the Emperor rushed the Crusade because he knew that if he did not, humanity would have gone extinct within 300 hundred years. He needed the civil war to occur as soon as possible in order to extend the Human race for at least another 10,000 years, if not longer. We as the audience are even explained this when the Alpha Legion are made aware of it. The long war is the crucible that makes Humanity stronger, and a strong Humanity will survive ... even if it requires one half to fight the other. Walk through the logic with me: The Emperor was created to save Humanity from the great adversary. At the moment of His creation, He saw the the extinction of Humanity as well as the narrow path needed to prevent it. The Emperor then spends 30,0000 years lining up a shot that with will take 300 years to fire, and 10,000 years to land. During the set up, He sent Humanity off world in the Great Diaspora and set Humanity on a path to ascension in order to get past the creation of Slaanesh. He then implemented his plan of rapid consolidation and re-education of Humanity under one government, a single government designed to maintain control over a galaxy. He needed half of His sons to rebel, half to remain loyal, half of the Mechanicum to push past all boundaries, and half to stagnate all progression at any cost. This dichotomy of conflict would require His own sacrifice, and His eventual resurrection. What we see in the 40k setting is exactly what The Emperor created. His 10,000 year shot did not hit the bullseye, but it did hit the target. Humanity not only survived, it’s still surviving, and it has the tools to continue surviving.

Why would humanity be erazed within 300 years? Cannot remember where this was stated. Because he knew from his foresight and the birth of slaanesh that ascension into god-hood was possible if he could create an Imperium that worshiped him? However he had already created the Imperial Truth before the chaos gods made him the offer and he had to use Tzeentch level manipulating in order to set himself up as a righteous god? Even further to deepen the plot, maybe he wants to become a god so he can defeat the chaos gods, the chaos gods thinking they were using him, but the Emperor was actually using the chaos gods in the "VERY" long term? The biggest flaw I see in this theory is that the Chaos Gods wouldn't have a reason to offer godhood to anyone-- perhaps some of them wanted to have Big E working *for* them, but each of the Chaos Gods is out for themselves and would happily and merrily murder each other and take all the others stuff. It's heavily speculated that there used to be other god-like beings in the Warp, but they were either destroyed or recruited by the big 4 along the way. There are a couple lesser deities still spooking around in the warp, though. I do, however, support the notion that E is gonna be the fifth Chaos God when the Golden Throne finally breaks for good, though I don't think he planned or intended it. He is, in many ways, effectively a god already, so why bind himself into the warp, with all its caveats, catches, and problems, when he's already effectively a god in real space?

The problem with "warriors" is that because it's all about personal glory for them a civil war becomes inevitable once the readily available external enemies are defeated. Gotta get that personal glory somewhere. That's why sane armies are composed of soldiers and not warriors. As I understand it Chaos can't be undone. It's just a complex energy pattern formed from beliefs. The beliefs gave them structure. Their power comes from the warp. Stopping people from believing wouldn't alter those patterns. Believing in science and order would just create an additional pattern in the warp rather than displacing that which is already there. It's not like the warp is going to run out of space and start deleting stuff.

A better problem was that there was no counterbalance to the Primarchs beyond the Emperor himself. You had superhumans dedicated to war and nobody or nothing that could control them except each other. Which is what happened with the Heresy where they turned on each other. There was no real back-up plan. This is why the Imperial Guard, which was intended originally to being merely auxiliary and mechanized-only force, ended up the main army of the Imperium with the Astertes as special forces. The other problem is that he didn't make more Primarchs that after he lost the initial batch, ones raised under him that would have far less likely would have fallen to the Chaos.

Maybe the emperor was worried other strands of humanity would have the same idea, gaining too much power and splitting the galaxy in two factions.

It's really all up for speculation, but between the books dealing with pre heresy thousand sons and the cabal, it was most likely the emperor was trying to come out on top of a deal with chaos. Which as we know didn't work out.

OK going rouge here !! But .. What If the emperor had experienced the age of strife / great crusade before on like a temporal loop , he has tried many different ways to unite mankind or beat chaos or the unseen threat , and thought this time round speed was key , as he does not show emotion to his sons still calling them by number ,as time has no presence in the warp and a being of the emperor's power could manipulate it to loop back to a specific point , but in a twist never experienced Horus betrayal on this time line and being wounded can not enter the warp to loop back to a preset time ... What do people think ?

Not sure if you take suggestions but I've had one that I've always wondered about: why were the Space Wolves, Salamanders, and Alpha Legion developed seperate from the other Legions? I've always suspected it was due to a distinct plan for each of them (guardians for Salamanders, Traitor Marine hunters for Space Wolves, and covert intelligence gatherers of any heretical activity for Alpha Legion) as opposed to simply being soldiers. Perhaps it's been stated somewhere I've missed, but I think it would be an interesting video.

Or you know, conquer as much as you can as fast as you can and don't waste time on extended diplomacy because if you take your time your potential conquests will form a coalition or will individually get stronger if they have time to notice your advance. Perhaps it was a combination of all of the theories the video mentioned, but even without those, the emperor was using basic blitzkrieg tactics, knock your enemy down as fast as possible with overwhelming force before they can mobilize a response. It worked for the most part.
@TealWolf264 жыл бұрын
So...the Tyranids then. Maybe that's why he was so anxious to finish the Webway. Juking the hivefleet tendrils and popping up instantaneously at key weakpoints. Potentially hiding if necessary. Also a way to pass along information due to the shadow in the warp being a thing.
@supercellodude6 жыл бұрын
It might also have to do with the stirring of the Void Dragon on Mars. The fact that the Mechanicum might be corrupted by such a powerful entity likely enforced another time limit on the Emperor. Considering he needed the factorums of Mars and the technological expertise of the Machine Cult to begin his expansion, it's possible he needed to balance the aforementioned factors like prediction of unified threats, the growth of chaos worship, and the challenges of existing human and xenos star-nations with the awakening of the Necrons and the C'tan.
@Deniecu7 жыл бұрын
I thought the Emperor's plans were pretty simple and straightforward. 1. Conquer all life in the galaxy 2. Remove belief in the supernatural and so starve all beings of detremental effect to humanity that inhabits the warp 3. Guide mankind in its evolution to a psychicly active species 4. Galaxy conquered, check. Warp conquered, check.

I think the Emperor made a deal with the Chaos gods in order to create the Primarchs, and whatever the circumstances were forced to emperor to act as quickly as possible.
@williamfrancis53676 жыл бұрын
My guess, the power vacuum caused by the death of the alderi empire. Once that occurred the Galaxy was effectively up for grabs, and the emperor calculated it would be better to act now before any serious competition emerged. In a sense the gamble worked. For the next 10,000 years (ish) the main threat the Imperium faced was itself.

He was in such a rush to conquer the galaxy, but of course he had enough time to put down the Thunder warriors.
@elricengquist99897 жыл бұрын
I think it would be very possible that it was a mixture of them all, with the creation of the Primarchs being a element in his plan of how to defend against the threats he foresaw, that after they were scattered had to be found or disaster would happen (might also have been the emperor holding a grudge or was angry that they were scattered.). Though i also wonder if in creating the space marines something in their genetic make-up made the Emperor realise that the primarch of a chapter could be a form of stabilizing agent keeping the corruption or mutations in check somehow, and so seeing how the chapters would fall to corruption/mutation he had to find the Primarchs fast to insure that the corruption/mutation in the chapters were kept to a minimum.

@maximuspraetoria7480 Жыл бұрын
It's a combination of many, many things in my opinion, as a comment said, the emperor had lost faith in Humanity so he decided to step from the shadows and do it himself, then, there are the actual treats, the orks on Ullanor, the Rangdan, chaos, the surviving men of iron and machines, there's the possibility of the emperor actually seeing the incoming Tyranid fleets through his visions, or even the awakening of the necrons Also, there's to remember that the emperor made a pact with the Chaos gods for the creation of the primarchs, perhaps he tricked them for a while but he knew that his trick wouldn't last, so he rushed the crusade to conquer as many worlds as fast as possible before sh*t happened
@karupt4227 жыл бұрын

I think chaos use the same self fulfilling prophecy track on both the emperor and Horace Loopical. That is to say as Horus was shown a vision of the 41st millennium in order to get him to rebel and bring it about, the emperor was shown a vision of the Horus heresy in order to get him to rush and bring it about.
@phreakazoith22376 жыл бұрын
Maybe the emperor considered the risks of consolidating worlds higher than the risksof a rushed crusade. Think about Lorgar. He slowed down with conquering to follow his own priorities. Maybe the emperor feared other primarchs might execute their own agendas as well according to their strenghts and ambitions. Roboute might have consolidated too much, building strong mini empires before moving on, others might have stayed on their newly conquered worlds until they were fortified to the max and so on. Insert primarch here...
@yolomcswagerton38372 жыл бұрын
I think it had to do with the combination of foreknowledge of the truly cataclysmic events that would face mankind combined with the fact that with every year other human states grew to prominence and thus the Emperor felt he had to unite humanity before they could splinter and entrench. This with the Primarchs scattering and forming their own empires as well, what if the one of them had actually formed a significant challenger to the Imperium and decided to stand against the Emperor or their brothers. All this would have put a lot of pressure on the Emperor if he wanted any chance at being the sole ruler of humanity and forced him to make do with what he had during the early expansion of the Imperium as seen with his unusually diplomatic approach with Mars; he just didn't have the time or resources to get bogged down in a Martian conquest at the time.

Theory two was a great explanation of my beliefs about the great crusade; beleifs I have formed partly through watching your videos, Remleiz, and partly through my own reading. The great crusade is, as far as I'm aware, the only attempt ever to defeat chaos, the only threat chaos has really faced. It's method was to remove the emotions and beliefs that sustain chaos. Another method is possible: remove the life forms entirely that sustain chaos. This is why I'm pretty sure chaos would be forced to fight tyranids if they threatened to destroy life in the galaxy. It's also why part of me thinks maybe the tyranids are a creation of the old ones used as a "hard reset" for galaxies where chaos has ruined the warp. Wait for the sea of souls to return to peace with no emotions to sustain chaos, then the old ones can restore life to the barren galaxy without chaos in the warp to mess things up.

If you study the Unification Wars or even just the reconquest of Sol. You find how much Warp worshippers had spread and the immense damage they wrought. In that context the Imperial Truth makes complete sense. But the biggest reason why the Great Crusade was rushed, was because of how many Xeno Empires that would try to stop the EoM. Meaning the longer the Great Crusade took, the more time these Empires had to crush His Imperium. The Rangden Xenocides are good example of this. As the Rangden had vast human slave armies and ascendant Human star nation would be a threat to that.

The video cites things like very high Marine casualty rates and degradation of geneseed caused by accelerated cultures as being problems caused by the Great Crusade being rushed, but it's possible that these things also provide an explanation. Namely: there are many jobs which even an imperfect tool can accomplish, provided that you don't care about still having an unbroken tool afterwards.

Well... -Lorgar would have been brought up to speed (hopefully kicking Erebus+his dad into a star) and maybe given Buddhism a spin instead. -Magnus would have had to calm his horned nipples down a tad and maybe Listened to Jaghatai and Amon, the three of them enjoying tea and horseback riding while Ahriman read books n shit. -Mortarion might have found closure, promoted Garviel to Equerry and decapitated Typhon -Horus wouldn't have gone to that trippy healing room on Davin, hopefully fire Abaddon for trying to bring him there. -Russ would have seen both his hypocrisy and the urgency not to have conversations and dealings with the "spirits of Fenris" -Fulgrim would melta'ed the Laer Blade into slag and giggled all the way to his pottery class with Ferrus as they held hands watching the sunset and stuff -Perturabo would have felt less batshit crazy for seeing the eye of terror everywhere (while still remaining completely fucking nutters) -Konrad could have overcome his headaches and obsession with leather cloaks -Angron and company would most likely see a reduction in the amount of bloody nails in their skulls -Ultramar would be unfucked -Malcador would be free to enjoy life as not a pile of dust. -The Emperor's nose wouldn't itch as much.

True that. A lot of the wrongs of the Imperium stem from the Emperor not feeling that the primarchs could handle knowing of the Existence of Chaos, and as a result they were never briefed on what to do when they got engaged by these entities they never seen before.

Simply because of the properties of a power vacuum. The emperor moved fast to secure as much as the galaxy as possible to ensure humanity would be the ascendent power in this new vacuum. Simply by virtues of being the rising force would give humanity incredible momentum as they invariably wipe out their rivals in the scramble for the top. This, coupled with his need to gather his sons to limit foreign or corrupting influence and in his haste to starve the chaos gods before more human fleets made contact with the eye and immaterium forces is why he rushed through his crusade, in my opinion. In short his plan was multifaceted. 1) wipe out largest rivals for easy and self sub-stained expansion 2) Ensure military control via reunification with primarchs and hopefully be able to mold them as desired 3) starve chaos
@phreakazoith22377 жыл бұрын
If Big E anticipated the Beast or the nid's arrival, wouldn't he rushed toward them with all the might he had (legions, Titans, primarchs...) instead of wasting his forces to purge minor xenos he could have easily dealt with later when the big threats were eliminated? I agree with the thought he wanted to use the window of opportunity before the next massive warp storm might ruin all his efforts again.
@WmHorus7 жыл бұрын
In all likelihood it was a combination of those explanations and more, considering his foresight chances are he saw the golden throne coming for him and he was trying to accomplish as much of his mission as he could before it happened.

Kinda feel like it's got something to do with the deal he made with the chaos gods. Maybe it was like you've got so much time to find what you will loose. Emps lost the game (ran out of time) near the end of the great crusade so he rushed back to terra to sort out the webway, using that instead of the warp, so humanity wouldn't have to face the consequences of his failed gamble?

The Emperor knew that the path towards the Heresy was one of the greatest probable futures and sought to try and rush all roads leading towards that future before the worst possible scenario occurred. Unfortunately he didn't guide that path enough to reach the best outcome and realized this when he pulled the Imperial Fists back to Terra, or he saw this as the most effective counter measure should the worst come true. In the first book, Horus tells us that Horus WILL see the people who would later become the Interrex. Not that he may one day see them, but rather that he will see them, and it is there that the fate of the galaxy turned towards the current situation in the 41st/42nd millenium. If his powers of divination are so great, then the Emperor should have been able to see how much he needed to guide the entirety of the crusade, however he probably saw that the Word Bearers had already fallen and that the skein was already closing too many of the paths he needed, and so it was that the Heresy became reality. This might explain why the Emperor couldn't believe that Horus had fallen, as he was fighting to see which path upon the skein was truly being traveled down by the galaxy at large.
