In January of 2019, my husband was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Although, he responded well to treatment for a year, he developed a platelet cytoma/tumor in his pelvic bone in December. The tumor quickly grew and invaded his spinal nerves, rendering him a paraplegic. He was admitted to the hospital with lower extremity weakness, but soon lost complete use of his legs. As I sat at the hospital trying to wrap my brain around the situation, I often thought of reaching out to you guys. Unfortunately; Peter lost his battle and just passed away. Needless to say, my children and I are broken. He struggled so much with the loss of his legs, but I didn't care. I have been in love with him for 27 years, and was going to love him, regardless. God had a different plan for us, though. Charisma, you are so strong and generous with your heart, and I now understand how painful it is to watch someone that you love so deeply, struggle. I was interning in the trauma unit before I became a nurse. I remember this young man had just been stabilized after a roll-over car accident. He was just 22 years old. I remember looking at him and realizing he had his entire life before himself and all he could move was his mouth. I don't think it had dawned on him that he was never going to move independently because he was texting friends with a pen in his mouth. I wanted to see if he needed anything and he got annoyed with me for interrupting his conversation in that young person way. I was heartbroken knowing there would come a day and time that he would come to terms with his situation. Seeing Cole living his best life with Charisma gives me hope that young man found his way.

I had a serious leg injury at 9 years old, and I can absolutely attest to Cole. When you discuss parts of the injury or scars, You can literally “feel” that pain all over again, even after years and years!!! I absolutely HATE it when my scars are touched!!! Our scars = trauma and just like our minds, our bodies remember the good the bad and the ugly!! I’m going in for my 11th operation on Monday 🤦♀️ and it will hopefully elevate some of the arthritic pain that’s now in my hip from years of walking with the original trauma that was set in traction incorrectly. I also have spasms because my nerves have been pinched in places. It’s horrible and annoying. Mine is mostly spasmodic bladder so you can just imagine how often I have to pee lol 😂!! Anyway, I just realize love watching you guys because even though we ALL have different trials in our lives, you remind everyone to always “stay positive”! 🙌 Such an important message!!! 💜🙌

I suffered from transverse myelitis in Sept 2020 (in the middle of Covid isolation) at age 54. I am a quadriplegic (c4-c6, T4-T11, s3-S5) who has battled through to be able to walk again with a single point stick. I was lucky enough that there was a top neurosurgeon on duty the morning after I was brought into the ER overnight in terrible pain, rapidly watching my function disappear and no one could figure out why. He realised what was happening, got the treatment started and sat with me for 6 hours breathing along with me until things eased enough until I didn’t have to get a trach or go on a respirator. That was a great description of Paraesthesia! I had a giggle to myself because I’ll think my leg is straight in bed and I look down and find it hovering a foot above the covers and bent backwards 😂. I’m glad you were able to make a recovery! Honest question, if you don’t mind me being so forward: how on earth does a driver end up being in the path of a train? I realize that such collisions happen frequently, and that some instances are just impatience (like when people drive around the barriers of guarded crossings), but I just can’t wrap my head around why one wouldn’t treat an unguarded crossing with at least the same respect as a stop sign, looking left and right before proceeding. It’s easy to jump to conclusions (“people are dumb!”), but I’d love to get insight from someone who was actually in that situation.

You are such a joy to watch I too had a trach & like you I was AMAZED at hearing my own voice for the 1st time. I've had my trach out 3yrs now and I still don't like anyone touching my hole. Although its completely healed, it is very SENSITIVE.

It’s so cool hearing you explain what you can feel and not feel. I have MS and there is nerve damage on my spinal chord. People usually don’t understand when I try to explain

I understand about the tape. The day after a spinal surgery, the dr.'s aide needed to remove the bandages to check my incision and I told him to just rip it off, not to go slowly. Yeah, he did as I asked and I passed out cold. That tape is no joke.

When I was caring for my dad his traech came out for some reason I tried not to panic I called the VA and asked What I needed to do..they advised. me they could guide me over the phone on how to place or we could have an ambulance take him in..I thought for a moment I could save money by doing it myself so they told exactly what to to do ..I asked my dad if he would trust me to do it He gave the ok..so "I had a problem slipping it in I noticed when my dad swallowed it would open up where I could slip the tube easily ..I would ask my dad to swallow ..WOW It worked. I did keep everything sterile and cleaned out the hole..I was proud that "I did it" thank God ..I learned alot about my dad's condition by caring for him..suctioning his traech, cleaning it, bedsores, bowel care, it was alot to learn..with God's help he gave me strength thank God my dad trusted me to care for him . anyway Cole thank you for sharing ..God bless you both .love your story🙏
