A dream that has grown for generations. Our families have farmed or gardened in SC since the 1700’s. Dean Family Acres was established in 2013 and expanded in 2016, we strive to be “Real People, Real Homesteading.” We are on 5 acres in the Upstate of SC, zone 8a where we garden, feed chickens, cats, dogs, rabbits and Boer meat goats. Glad I found you. We live in the coastal region of SC on a farm that has been in my husband's family for 5 generations. Where I live is mostly tourism but we live in a rural area. A few months ago we started a homesteading in Horry County Facebook page to try to get some interest going. I watch other youtubers that homestead but I had no idea that there were any in SC

I am in SC (smiling faces, beautiful places) because my red dirt roots run deep here. My ancestors (dating back to the 1700's) farmed red dirt in south western NC (Polk, Rutherford, and Cleveland counties) and north western SC. (Spartanburg county) so it is "home sweet home". I broke the upstate SC "family tradition" and relocated to a timber farm and homestead "where a country boy can survive" in the midlands of SC to escape uncontrolled unmanaged development in Spartanburg. Spartanburg was once known for peach orchards and row crop farms but they don't plant seed or trees these days they plant houses and businesses. and that is my 90 seconds worth of why I homestead in SC

We haven’t heard of one specifically for content creators. Several groups of homesteaders have organized meetups in several places. We helped organize one in 2021, some changes with work and family had us adjust how much time we had to commit. (Recently we’ve been focused on interacting in a variety of different ways.) Imho get together with like minded people that know what they’re talking about and/or are looking to learn as well as those who aren’t just trying to take advantage of this movement. Lots of good folks here!

Great job on the video, really enjoyed seeing all the different channels an their response’s! We moved here a year ago and love it so far so I can relate to a lot of the answers from everyone. We done a lot of homesteading in Florida before I started my outdoor channel but I’m wanting to get back into it so I’ve been doing some research on growing vegetables and such here. Funny I came across this video and the first person I see is my buddy Ronnie from Early Bird Farm SC lol..We’ve been friends for a while now and he’s been giving me great info on things since I moved here. Happy to help… I’d recommend looking at a particular area of the state then going from there. Make a list of your priorities for work, weather, isolatedness, location to the beach or mountains. SC is an extremely varied state with several city hubs with lots of people. Once you decide what you prefer then start looking at counties and their ordinances for anything that you might be interested in doing as well as taxes. Biggest thing those of us who have been here a long time will say is don’t come wanting to change who we are, especially wanting to change to what you left as there’s usually a reason why you’re looking for a new place to call home. You will get along great with almost everyone as long as you don’t try and change our beautiful state.

Totally depends on the location that you’re interested in. Super varied on amenities, layout, pricing, regulations, etc. Market here in SC has changed drastically in the last 3 years or so. Best bet is to find a home-place that needs work. Otherwise you’ll be into most areas deep financially.

Glad to have you. I’m not aware of any “searchable” places for affordable land. Prices have increased considerably in the last 2-3 years. FYI - traditionally the lower part of the state is cheaper on land.

DO you really need a reason to live in a great place?!!! I mean that is my home state. They forgot to mention the red clay dirt. To me that is the worst part of it. The summers are hot and also love that. I have moved to PNW and I go home almost every 3 to 4 months and in the summer I go and stay for a month just for the summer. Bugs can be a little bit of a problem and snakes. YOU WILL NOT FIND ANY FRIENDLIER PEOPLE AND GREAT FOOD !!!!!! I Love you can grow great tomatoes and okra. Just an awesome place all around!

Location impacts affordability greatly. Especially if you’re looking for acreage. Property in most of the state has increased greatly with the influx of new residents from traditionally higher cost of living areas over the last 3-4 years. There are a few opportunities, but they’re usually word of mouth, a FSBO sign or similar. If a realtor gets ahold of it it’s usually going to end up at a premium.
