The thing I think I like the most is that no one is ever in the wrong really. When two people are vying for the affections of another, neither of them are more or less deserving of it, both have entirely justifiable reasons for this and even though one of them will lose you can't really feel like they got screwed over. It doesn't feel like you're supposed to cheer for one person over the other.
@sinki33223 жыл бұрын
Yup! It was clearly the anime's goal to show that everyone has their reason, and everyone's worth it. Even giving time to side characters shows that everyone is important in a story. And wow, it felt so good to not have a harem for once! But instead, realistic feelings and character developments !
@bongotoucan79133 жыл бұрын
And the anime directly addresses that with a single line. When I read the line “It only hurts more because nobody is in the wrong” the reality of it really hit me. Realising that that’s true in so many circumstances was something I wasn’t expecting when watching a romcom
@uniquely_kylee18593 жыл бұрын
My favorite example of this in the show is Kono and Yoshikawa pining after Ishikawa. I never felt like rooting for anyone in particular, I just realized that they both had their sob stories about why they should date Ishikawa. It really shows how in real life, everyone has reasons and aspirations, crushes and heartbreak, love and loss. The way that we see Kono’s insecurities and her genuine admiration and her crush on Ishikawa was very well done. I find it very beautiful that they portrayed them as three dimensional characters instead of the usual good and bad archetypes, mirroring real life.

My favorite part of this series, aside from speedrunning the relationship in an organic way, is how people actually communicate with each other. Basically Horimiya looked at the tropes of romcom anime and realised they usually just serve to frustrate viewers. It’s quick paced, light hearted yet feel-good. I expected Miyamura forgetting his phone charger to be a huge problem, but he just comes home and they hug. I let out a damn sigh of relief he wasn’t berated and her ignoring him wasn’t the focus of the whole next episode. Probably why it was so easy to binge all the episodes, not to mention the amazing American voice acting. I found myself unable to watch the sub. It’s also admittedly kind of cringey to watch Hori treat Miyamura poorly sometimes, because it’s so similar to how I treated my own husband in High School. I also like when he’s mean to me too, and he’s unable to do it haha.

i've watched this series in sub and dub. i definitely prefer dub. Then i see comments about how Hori sounds older than they think she is... but she's 17 when the series starts, so she's technically an adult with an adult voice. She's also incredibly mature, which makes her older voice sound even more accurate to the character. From what i can tell, all the characters have perfect VA's that match the character's personalities rather thoroughly.

The moment that really drove home how well they captured the feeling of having feelings as a teenager was at the end of episode 5, when Miyamura tells Ishikawa that he and Hori are dating, but it stays with Ishikawa for his reaction. As a person who's been in that exact scenario, where you're happy for your bro because you know how great the other person is, but you're also disappointed by the fact that you're not the person in the relationship with them, it felt so real and dredged up some unfortunate memories.

Horimiya is one of the few shows that makes the high school setting worthwhile. Most anime, high school feels likes an almost arbitrary choice to make the content more Relatable™ to the viewer while most western shows it just feels like the fetishization of youth. Like how Miyamura takes Sawada's crush on Hori seriously, they don't make it into a joke at Sawada's expense. Yes, it does turn into a running gag that Miyamura's popular with guys/that a guy's gonna steal him from Hori, but it's different from other shows in that "homosexuality" isn't the butt of the joke, instead it's just another way of showing Hori's jealousy.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that it's everywhere, it's become an expectation where every story is almost required to have it (even if it's usually irrelevant). Furthermore when a story goes a different direction from the cliche romance plot-line, people will usually complain about it unless the author is good. Meaning that the only cases where anything remotely interesting happens is when an author has previously taken enough risks to know how to subvert/avoid the romance cliches well.

If papers falling out of a window make your heart race, a show sure is doing something right - now I'm intrigued 🤔🤔🤔

You should be intrigued. It's a great show and manga

Papers falling out the window compares to the funeral of an important character in longer running shows (not saying Horimiya is only getting the one season, but others needed more time first)

You definitely need to check it out. This is far and away the single best romance anime I've watched in my life. It's also the only work of fiction that has made me feel exactly like how I did when I had a crush in high school, and it actually lets its characters form and grow their relationships.

After watching both seasons, the ending showing how Hori would view Miyamura gone compared to how Miyamura would have thought of never meeting her was so good.

I love how you say words like "doki doki's" and "fuwa fuwas" in such a confident way. I can't take it seriously.

it took me 7 episodes to realize Horimiya comes from merging Hori and Miyamuras' names
