@@deltacream the characters being in a relationship is not the endgame, but rather it's something they are doing together to grow as characters themselves. In most rom coms all you want to see is the main characters confess and become lovers , but in Horimiya you just keep wanting them to become better as a person , no matter what romantic Choices they make. Do you get it now?

The thing I think I like the most is that no one is ever in the wrong really. When two people are vying for the affections of another, neither of them are more or less deserving of it, both have entirely justifiable reasons for this and even though one of them will lose you can't really feel like they got screwed over. It doesn't feel like you're supposed to cheer for one person over the other.
@sinki3322

Yup! It was clearly the anime's goal to show that everyone has their reason, and everyone's worth it. Even giving time to side characters shows that everyone is important in a story. And wow, it felt so good to not have a harem for once! But instead, realistic feelings and character developments !
@bongotoucan7913
@bongotoucan7913 3 жыл бұрын
And the anime directly addresses that with a single line. When I read the line “It only hurts more because nobody is in the wrong” the reality of it really hit me. Realising that that’s true in so many circumstances was something I wasn’t expecting when watching a romcom

My favorite example of this in the show is Kono and Yoshikawa pining after Ishikawa. I never felt like rooting for anyone in particular, I just realized that they both had their sob stories about why they should date Ishikawa. It really shows how in real life, everyone has reasons and aspirations, crushes and heartbreak, love and loss. The way that we see Kono’s insecurities and her genuine admiration and her crush on Ishikawa was very well done. I find it very beautiful that they portrayed them as three dimensional characters instead of the usual good and bad archetypes, mirroring real life.

My favorite part of this series, aside from speedrunning the relationship in an organic way, is how people actually communicate with each other. Misunderstandings only last for a while, interruptions does not magically erase interrupted conversations, and people actually notice non verbal cues. Also, their dialogues feel so natural and organic, like listen to their casual conversations, it sounds like the same dumbass and random shit me and my friends might bring up.

"why do we love Horimiya" bc it doesn't feel the need to drag us through 3 unfinished seasons just to see the main couple hold hands next question Edit: what I meant by this is, if you pick a romance anime, you expect to see some romance in it. It's way too common for this type of anime to dwell on the will-they-wont-they for the entire duration of it, and I'm not saying that I don't love a good slowburn but the problem is romance anime rarely get renewed, and if the main couple didn't actually become a couple in the first season they probably never will unless you go and read the source material. And Shindo is best boy 2! He not only became friends with Izumi but also defended him against the bully (it was his friend in the bathroom scene) where he basically says "well, you're the one who made him miserable and I like hanging out with him. See ya" that's a real bro right there.

While the dad is definitely a deadbeat dad, he gained some small amount of respect in my books when Miyamura was talking about how he did not feel comfortable appealing to Kyoko's masochistic side and the dad was like "Kyoko, sit down, you should be a part of this conversation." While it was probably ham-fisted, he addressed that it was important that the couple talk it out and establish some ground rules.

Basically Horimiya looked at the tropes of romcom anime and realised they usually just serve to frustrate viewers. It’s quick paced, light hearted yet feel-good. I expected Miyamura forgetting his phone charger to be a huge problem, but he just comes home and they hug. I let out a damn sigh of relief he wasn’t berated and her ignoring him wasn’t the focus of the whole next episode. Probably why it was so easy to binge all the episodes, not to mention the amazing American voice acting. I found myself unable to watch the sub. It’s also admittedly kind of cringey to watch Hori treat Miyamura poorly sometimes, because it’s so similar to how I treated my own husband in High School. I also like when he’s mean to me too, and he’s unable to do it haha.

i've watched this series in sub and dub. i definitely prefer dub. Then i see comments about how Hori sounds older than they think she is... but she's 17 when the series starts, so she's technically an adult with an adult voice. She's also incredibly mature, which makes her older voice sound even more accurate to the character. From what i can tell, all the characters have perfect VA's that match the character's personalities rather thoroughly.

@@spencerdokes6056 They outsource to freelance animators. Pretty much all the major studios outsource their animators, it's common practice. It's also one of the reasons why you hear so many horror stories about the anime industry. They hire freelance animators, they work nonstop, pay them garbage, then they're off looking for the next project to work on. It's rare the animators themselves get mentioned in the credits though. If you want to learn all about how these studios outsource animators watch the Trash Taste podcast ft. Ken Arto. He's a freelance animator in the industry who worked on JoJo, My Hero, DBZ Broly, and a bunch of other popular anime. He explains how these studios find animators and breaks down the life of being freelance animator in Japan. Some of the things he discussed blew my mind. Yes! Wotakoi! I just love that theres an underlying lewdness, or that it can go from wholesome to lewd and back without feeling too "lusty" and crude. Like sexuality is acknowledged, and not used as a way to ramp up tension or stakes, or as fanservice. It's just part of the journey of discovery within the relationship, and as a viewer its...idk an exciting moment too, akin to Shous reaction to the haircut. They don't live in a world where the lewd feelings dont exist, and they dont live in a world where lewd feelings are "inevitable" between two people of the same sexuality.

Like how Miyamura takes Sawada's crush on Hori seriously, they don't make it into a joke at Sawada's expense. Or how Hori takes Shindo's words seriously and the other guy's actions towards Miyamura seriously as well. Yes, it does turn into a running gag that Miyamura's popular with guys/that a guy's gonna steal him from Hori, but it's different from other shows in that "homosexuality" isn't the butt of the joke, instead it's just another way of showing Hori's jealousy.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that it's everywhere, it's become an expectation where every story is almost required to have it (even if it's usually irrelevant). Furthermore when a story goes a different direction from the cliche romance plot-line, people will usually complain about it unless the author is good. Meaning that the only cases where anything remotely interesting happens is when an author has previously taken enough risks to know how to subvert/avoid the romance cliches well.

@@theta682pl I'm still surprised that the standard formula stops at the point where it does. To paraphrase Red of Overly Sarcastic Productions, we have a whole array of literary tropes and shortcuts for showing and expediting the steps leading up to an Official Relationship, yet we have no idea how to write characters _in_ a relationship. To use a different genre as a comparison, it would be like if there was an entire genre and a bunch of subplot-shortcuts built around martial arts training montages, but hardly anyone bothered to write fight scenes past the first couple of punches.

Horimiya is just that special kind of sweet show that really makes you feel good watching. I like that Miyamura’s cool look is only brought up when meeting someone and then it’s just normal, like in real life you wouldn’t keep bringing up your friends “alternative” style, once it’s established it’s just there. The relationship between him and Hori has that awkward high school feel to it where they’re still trying to really figure out how to do a relationship. The supporting characters actually add to the story and you want them to be happy too. It’s such a nice, wholesome, feel good show that I feel fairly confident in saying is my favorite show of this season. It’s everything I want in a romcom.

Horimiya is surprisingly simple but it’s enough, it gives up what we want in a romance and it does it well. Though the original web comic had a lot of drama and was quite dark and the manga and anime has toned it way down but this lack of major drama makes it so much better.
