I live in Europe and we have a... kinda similar thing? Too young to hit the dating dread, but old enough to want to pretend to be an adult

We have a prom in Finland fir third year high school students. It's to celebrate the end of classes, before the cramming starts. It's called "Elders day". The seniors dress in rococo style, with wigs and big dresses. There's a feast, performances, and the dance includes period accurate dances like polonaise. It can be a huge headache for families with less money. Those elaborate dresses be expensive.

It always annoyed me even from a young age when adults would draw attention to a disabled or impaired or homeless person and say "aww, don't you feel bad for that person?" Like, I guess, but also they're just a person. It's weird that we're supposed to feel sorry for them rather than just treat them like a normal person. I mean if had some kind of disadvantage that's all I'd want.

Same. My grade had a prom a few months ago, and the thought of actually going there was so far away from my image of self. I'm not someone who would go to a place with people I'm not friends with, dance to bad pop music (or dance in general), wearing clothes I'll never wear again, with a random girl i probably didn't find, getting drunk from booze i find discusting (i only drink light alcohol, or alcohol drowned with sugary fruit flavours). And we haven't even gotten to stuff like losing my still intact virginity, or drugs (god forbid). I mean some people probably enjoy the company of their friends, and i would certainly love to have my own customized suit, but other than that i find it a pointless shitshow.

50 here. I still have my prom dress from 1992 & 1993. My grandma was wonderful at sewing and made my prom dresses. They were not only totally different than everyone's almost the same store bought dress that cost hundreds of dollars. But they fit me like a glove and only cost about $40 for material/decorations. Labor was paid for with hugs. She was so talented (she's still alive but no longer sews) that I was once a bridesmaid for my aunt & uncle. For that wedding I was gifted a beautiful dress to wear in ceremony. My grandma was so amazing, that after that wedding, she took apart that dress and made me a whole new dress, including gloves & a purse! I saved them not only for sentimental purposes, but my daughters wore them when they were little, playing dress up.

Didn't go to prom, but a big group of my friends and I put together a "Not Prom" the same night. Which was essentially everything but the dance, we went all dressed up to a riverwalk/amusement park instead. But my mom was smart about the dress. We had a cruise set for after I graduated and whatever my "prom" dress was, would also be my dress on the cruise for formal night. And now that I'm an adult I've used it a few times for a theater performance I used to do because it fit the character so well. So gotta say, at least I got a massive amount of use out of mine. Like yes. As a person with autism and mental illness, there is a difference in between seeing that life may be harder for someone/ and respecting them and pitying someone. I have learned that in my experience it can be hard to learn the difference, but I like to break it down as sympathy versus empathy.

In South Africa we have a matric dance/ matric farewell and it's basically the same thing as prom. Parents shill out a buttload of money for their 17yr old kids to dress up in fancy suits/dresses and everyone treats it like it's something you absolutely cannot afford to miss. Our matric farewell is in October and I was debating on whether or not I was gonna go, but I honestly just can't be bothered to ask some girl that I can barely hold a conversation with to come with me and sit there in our overpriced outfits that will put my parents under even more financial stress just so I can say I was present at my matric farewell. It just doesn't seem worth it and this video has helped me feel more secure in my choice, so thanks :)

As a fellow South African who's been to two matric farewells: its not worth it. It was boring, the food was meh, I only still have one picture of the 50 I had taken, I haven't even looked at my dress ever since because it just brings up guilt over how much money my dad shilled out over this piece of crap that I literally wore once. Rather have a party with friends that night. Like you can dress up a little fancy if you'd like but don't believe the hype.

I am 40. My prom was in 2002. It was altered to be a competition gown to competitive Latin dance for around 8 years (my profession at the time). It is now in storage in case other family wants it in the future. I wore my great aunts prom dress as my wedding reception dress. Getting it cleaned was hard because it was from the 1950's and delicate. Took 3 dry cleaners to find one to do it, but I looked beautiful. My sister also wore that dress to her prom. Classic styles never die.

I can have more fun with fashion as well, wearing either a t shirt and jeans, or a skirt and t shirt, or jeans and a nice glam top. I can layer with a denim jacket or leather jacket or even swap out the jeans for plaid pants. I know I'm guaranteed to enjoy the music because obviously I only go to rock concerts where the bands interest me. Instead of eating overrated fancy food I can have a burger or pizza or a hot dog. I can't fully explain it, it's just for fun for me overall.

It's crazy how much money people spend on proms and how important it is to them😭 Here in Russia we have "graduation" where everyone dresses(it's not the end of life if you had that dress in your wardrobe already), there is a programme (teachers are trying to make you miss school), than everyone waits till a teacher announce their name so they can get a certificate (what they finished school), when some kids go to bowling/beach/rent house, but some kids don't, it's pretty optional. Maybe afterwards parents will buy you something cool. That's all.

You & your three best friends split a hotel room, drink till you puke, somebody loses their virginity. It’s a rite of passage. It’s a memory you’ll look fondly back on. im from russia and we have two big events on the end of the last school year: "last bell" and actual prom. last bell is held by school, we have huge concerts where kids of all ages sing, dance and congratulate graduates, then the last ring rings (by first graders) and the day is over. so its kind of about a circle of life: at the first day of school first graders and last graders ring the first ring, on the last day of school they ring the last bell. proms are different from school to school. we had an official part at school (so all the teachers and local government could congratulate us) took our school diplomas and had a trip to a huge restaurant by rental bus (best part of the night because we could choose our music ourselves). in the restaurant we had a fancy dinner with other school graduates, a party zone (that was literally empty the whole night with only a dj in it) and a small yard where someone somehow found a way to bring weed (pretty strange experience to smoke with a random people ive never seen before who went to another school all dressed like they are in some disney fantasy movie). me and best friend actually found a room where all the teachers and parents were drinking, it had karaoke in it so we sang sad songs about war and russian army and danced for drunk boomers and somehow they were absolutely okey with it (few of them actually cried on the song "officers" by oleg gazmanov). and then we were packed again in the rental bus and went to a huge concert in the city park held by the local government. there were actually good artists, but i were too tired to participate in it. every city in russia each year makes this huge type of concerts for graduates only. the craziest concerts for graduates are in saint-petersburg, they literally turn the whole city in the prom show. cities are fighting for best singers to perform on those concerts, so if you live in big city you will def see a concert of the top-artists from russian spotify.

5:49 The tuxedo is in fact a more practical alternative to the earlier option, the morning suit, i.e. white tie. The tux essentially got rid of the tails, extravagant lapels & cravat which for the late 19th century made it the model of practicality for very formal events.

White tie is a black suit with tails a white tie and waistcoat. A morning suit is the same cut as the above without satin lapels. It must not be black, the coat and trouser do not have to match and is worn with a straight tie. The waistcoat does not have to match neither the tie, the coat nor the trousers. Addendum: Never split your tails when sitting down, only the hoi palloi do that. You can press your tails later, use a low temperature on your iron. You can never smooth out your reputation from that faux pas. Anybody who doesn't know this doesn't matter. The more you know.

I'm going to prom with my best friend next year, and the literall only reason we have planned this is because I'm making our dresses. Because firstly, we're both goths even if my friend doesn't ususally dress goth. Secondly, I already make clothes, and third, just for fun really, because they're going to be around while I'm making them (thats probably going to be more fun than prom tbh) and so we know that we have something we enjoy wearing. I don't even really go to that school anymore, but we're going together for kicks and giggles Edit: I also want to mention we're in the UK, I don't know what the hell homecoming is, and suprisingly, we do have prom over here

I always dreamed of my future prom/homecoming and my dream dress. Mostly because of movies that made it seem like high school dances were the pinnacle of young adult hood... Then I became an extremely anxious and awkward kid who wore glasses and was over weight. I asked people and they all declined. Even my friends didn't want me to tag along with them in their friend groups that were going dateless. It also became increasingly clear that about any dress would be too expensive (all of my friends also planned to get their hair and nails done professionally.) I just decided to stay home and cry. I felt very bitter about it for a while. Now I believe it's a completely ridiculous tradition. I wish I could go back and tell young me to think about other things.

Please don’t lose hope! The thing about high school is that it’s all a learning experience, whether good or bad we are still learning about life, And thanks to that we can start living a better life for the future But don’t lose hope on any of that, it may have been a bad night but because there are gonna be better and more fun nights in the future! And you’re gonna find the right people and you’re going to meet amazing friends with whom you’re going to have an amazing time no matter what event you go to So don’t lose hope on your dreams, but do build them or achieve them on your means! I don’t have anymore words to say except for telling you to make your own fun! Don’t let anyone else determine your happiness and if something seems fun to you go ahead and fly to it! There are going to be people who will agree with you and follow you, but don’t follow anyone else’s definition of “fun” , at least one you don’t agree to I wish you the best!

@@alexamarin1314 I appreciate the kind words and I agree that the younger years were about learning. I learned that prom and homecoming are pointless and stupid traditions that have no real reason for still being around and I had to learn it in a very rough and sad way. I appreciate all the optimism, but what I have learned from all my experiences isn't as optimistic. I still have hope, I wouldn't be here if I didn't have any, but it's a painful truth. I still have fun but I don't hold any silly delusions that all of my hopes and dreams will come true anymore. A lot of the whole, "just be happy!" "You just need to stay positive!" Mindset is easier said than done for a lot of people who struggle with mental illness.

I’m really sorry about that, I was also the “weird” kid at school, which just meant that I had social anxiety and probably wasn’t conventionally attractive, but that’s just so WEIRD, right? lol yeah I never went to prom and thought I’d never get a cool bf like the girls at my school. I felt stupid and unloved. But cut to today, me with an amazing partner and us just figuring life out together. Those kids called me ugly and weird in school, he calls me beautiful and special. I never thought I’d be able to achieve a happy life like this because people made it seem like I wasn’t good enough. Those are the people that peak in high school, and after learning what their current life is up to, I’m like…why did I ever feel lesser than them? Sure they were the stuff back then, now they’re just sad and want attention. Or maybe they’re in jail, or just miserable in general. Point is, high school is a learning experience. For me and you, it was tough. For others, it was a dream. But what matters is how you’ve grown since then and what you’re doing now for yourself. I hope you truly love yourself because you’re incredible and strong

I went to one Highschool dance as a teen and that was prom. Highschool dances didn’t really appeal to me back then and tickets were RIDICULOUSLY expensive. Didn’t even plan on going but on the second to last day, my crush/friend back then asked me. He was a slow learner but always tried his best in school. A teacher offered to buy him a prom ticket if he passed an exam. And he did! I was proud of him but got very confused when on my walk home from school, he came running down the side walk shouting my name. He was out of breath and collapsed on my front yard. Then he sat up, looked so excited and asked me out to prom. I laughed so hard as I helped him up. It wasn’t a fancy (overpriced) show but dang I didn’t care, he was so earnest about it I couldn’t say no as we both started laughing about how he really waited until the last minute. So we went to prom. Kinda over hyped, again overpriced but it was nice hanging out with friends and free food. And then an ambulance showed up in the last hour cuz a student council member nearly ODed as the other members tried to run drunk through some rose bushes. TLDR; Prom is kinda a scam but if you wanna feel kinda fancy for a few hours, you do you.

Edit: I WAS THE DANCING MELVIN OH MY GODDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, i spent my after prom in the basement of another guy I kinda knew, and several other dudes. I have yet to reach prom age and it’s such a dumb idea. I’ve asked so many older family members why prom is such a big thing since it’s just another dance, and every single one of them has gotten mad at me and called me rude, but hasn’t given me an actual answer. I think the only one that makes sense is when I asked my older cousin and he told me it was indeed, just a dance.

It's absolutely just a dance. Your relatives were probably mad because they enjoyed their prom and hold it as a cherished memory. However, I will dispense the same wisdom my mother once gave to me: people who idolize anything that happened in high school don't tend to have fulfilling lives. Some people really enjoy prom. I didn't attend mine despite getting asked out (he was a freshman, I was a senior and a lesbian with a girlfriend) and don't regret it a bit. If you don't think it'll be fun, it probably won't be. It's definitely not for everyone

My friends daughter is getting married, has a stunning dress but bought a second shorter one that looks cheap af and I don’t know how she’s going to dance in it because it just covers her butt. Like get your money out of your dress and stop trying to be like everyone else on Instagram. Make it personal. It’s just a waste and your not J.Lo. Overconsumption sucks.

THEN we went to prom, which was held at a ballroom at a big hotel. We walked in as a group and just hung out together at a table chatting. None of us felt like dancing. Theme was masquerade so everyone had to buy a mask to wear. My mom kept what I wore and it's in the back of a closet somewhere. I bought my prom fit on sale like two years before I actually had prom, it was originally for a family member's quincanera lol
