Don't forget to wear the backwards ballcap and lots of huge gold jewelry around your neck to complete this look. Seriously though, wearing sneakers with suits makes no sense and only makes you look like a confused millennial and not a serious professional unless you're one of the very few who own your own company and sets the dress code. Comparing sneakers to boots back in the 1800s equally makes no sense since the boots back then look much more like dress shoes than sneakers do today. Sneakers are just casual or sports wear and definitely not formal wear and no amount of talking about it or how well you wear the rest of the suit will ever justify it. It's just a very immature, lazy, sloppy, and unprofessional look, you might as well wear a track suit instead.

Are you sporting only "those" black, wide tip shoes while matching all kinds and colors of suits? Of course that sneakers are not to be matched with the suit to King's audience, nor for the Wall Street or The City IB and law firm interview, but in some acceptable and convenient occassion, if worn by the goodlooking and confident man, are so cool, stylish and attractive.

Dude, I'm with you, opinion wise. I support people rocking their own style, but sneaks with a suit, I would avoid for myself. With a sport coat combo, sure. But, if you want a look that says "I'm not feeling formal" then why pick the suit?

I think it's so much easier to pull off sneakers with a sports coat combo, rather than a suit. Based on the various looks that I've seen people attempt with sneakers and a suit, I think it works best when lowering the formality level of the shirt and/or tie.
@TheLifeontheropes2 жыл бұрын
There’s a couple of things to consider IMO. 1) If you’re doing the sneakers + suit thing, lose the tie. Tie’s are inherently formal and pairing with sneakers makes you look lost. 2) Cut/fit of the suit. The less structured the suit the more likely you’ll be able to pull the combo off. 3) The dress shirt. Avoid French cuffs, anything overly starched, too formal collar, etc. 4) Break of the pants. The break of the pants will frame the shoes in question. Double important for something as eye-catching as sneakers with a suit. It’s not impossible to pull off the look, but I would say best to avoid in 90% of scenarios and on 90% of people.

Since you asked, Antonio, I disagree. Wearing tennis shoes with suits doesn't look good; they make the wearer look childish, sloppy, and like he doesn't care about how he presents himself to the world. The first thing that comes to my mind when I see someone wearing sneakers with a suit is, “Poor dude doesn’t even own a pair of dress shoes!” When I notice that he appears to have money I just figure he never wears a suit and so for this one time he decided to just not buy a pair of dress shoes that he won’t get much wear out of. If I see the same person do it more than once, I just conclude that he has no style. In the US today, the trend towards comfort has lead men to dress very sloppy. I think staying at home during the pandemic has furthered this trend along. Men have been doing it long enough now that many men have forgotten how to dress properly, if they ever knew. Sneakers have no business being combined with a suit. Many have stated that it makes as much sense as wearing dress shoes with athletic wear. It is just not appropriate. In the US, I hate to say it, but so many people are obese that they dress very sloppy to be comfortable. A huge person having to resort to wearing sweats and athletic wear on a regular basis is sad. I will add that a backwards baseball cap looks juvenile and rediculous also. I guess that has lead to so many clothes here in the US having such huge arm holes in shirts. Who needs an arm hole that extends from your arm pit to half way down your body? It just makes a web of material under your arm. This makes it where the web of material pulls your shirt tail out of your trousers anytime you raise your arms. A proper size small arm hole makes the sleeve of your shirt articulated with your arm and body and you can raise your arms without it pulling on your shirt body. I also don’t like skinny high water trousers with a suit. All of these things just make men today look like total slobs.

This is a look that I hope is out of fashion soon. There are so many options for dress shoes with comfortable, rubber soles that look like stacked leather counterparts, there’s not much argument for wearing sneakers with a suit. You see it on ESPN all the time and it just looks hideous IMHO. I personally like dressy (round toe) western boots with a suit for comfort and a unique style. If I’m interviewing, I’m still going with formal dress shoes.
@frankface7288 Жыл бұрын
I wear multi colored sneakers and odd trousers almost exclusively with suit jackets. My trick to getting it right is matching at least two colors from the sneaker colorway with various items making up the outfit. Most often I ensure the colors being matched do not directly touch trousers although a perfect color match can touch. I prefer skateboard, tennis, soccer and traditional basketball sneakers which are essentially a navy deck shoe. Navy deck shoes have a thin sole the stays parallel along it's length (think original Converse). Choosing sneakers colored mainly in black, white, grey, blue and brown often work best however many of theses shoes will have contrasting accent colors which is where the color matching magic happens: Ties are your best friend when it comes to matching accent colors, scarves and thinner winter caps (thick ones look silly) work just as well when appropriate. Chinos, various greys and black trousers offer the best options when picking colors however I have gone as far as matching green. Color matching can be stretched a bit by keeping colors in the same family. A good example is burgundy with brown or red but additionally one can go as far brown and green staying with earth tones (in my opinion the further you stretch matching colors the more those colors should be slight accents on one or both items). Patterned jackets match the loudness of the multi colored sneakers therefore I match with solid colored trousers (jacket and trousers must contrast when wearing odd trousers). Natural gum rubber soles match chinos. White soles match white shirts. Laces can be swapped out to fine tune the look. There are big advantages to breaking up jackets with odd trousers while wearing name brand sneakers: Sneakers can be found on sale often well under $70. Considering trousers take a lot of abuse over time so you can save the ones that came with the suit for important dates. Less is more with this style so there is no need for pocket squares, hats and other accessories (I do use tie clips). Ladies turned off by traditional menswear are more open to this style. When done correctly this look can be pulled off in almost any setting This might be a bit more than my two cents but hey I hope it can help my fellow men out there enjoy playing with their style.

I usually agree with most of your statements Antonio, but I cannot abide by this one. Few things make a great suit look worse than a pair of sneakers. Even worse for old guys trying so desperately hard to be cool. It is the generational equivalent of wearing a toupee on your feet. If one spends good money on the suit then one should do so with their footwear. Sneaker prices are increasing, but that isn't the message I'm trying to convey. I personally have never complimented someone on wearing sneakers/dress hybrids with suiting. I feel as if that's like putting cheap rims or tires on a nice car. You could do it, but you shouldn't! I think the only potentially acceptable manner to wear sneakers is while pairing with a sport coat and chinos or jeans. As you have reviewed and many others, they're so damn many beautiful dress shoes that would be better paired with suiting than any sneaker company's product.

No tie. Loafers or some other leather shoe who is more casual but no sneaker. Sneakers go with casual, Dress shoes go with formal

Instead of wearing sneakers I think a nice set of exotic cowboy boots would look much better.

The problem I run into wearing dress shoes with a suit is that I have large and wide feet. Because of that I have to order most of my shoes online since most brands or stores do not carry my size. So I am often forced to wear sneakers with my suits.
@fredherbert792010 ай бұрын
And I have the opposite issue. I have narrow feet and small heels, so heel slip is a major issue with dress shoes for me, even after getting professionally fitted. I can either do boots or fancier sneakers.

Sneakers destroy the message a suit sends. Power and seriousness. Just like you don't wear black oxfords with jeans, you don't wear sneakers with a suit.

Yeah when I’m taking my students to visit a college and I know I’ll be walking more than 3 -5 miles 😅anything less I’m wearing Cowboy boots and a suit

i've never understood mixing casual with formal like the suit/sneaker combo. it just looks odd and immature, like the wearer is trying to be rebellious or a wiseass. it's bad enough when a thin young guy does it, but for a guy over 40 it's a ridiculous look.

You can pair formalish shoes with casual wear. Brown brogues with some dark blue jeans/chino. Never the opposite tho.

I loved this combo when I was about 20. I think it was some Jamiroquai filmclip that inspired me. But one thing I notice with your son's buddies there - the Nike "swoosh" takes it way too far, IMO - too much billboard casualness. The difference is analogous to wearing a sports jacket over a graphic t-shirt (Just, no!) versus plain-colour crew-neck tee (Yea, why not)

I love all your content but for the first time I have to disagree. I may be old fashioned but I just can't see sneakers as appropriate with a suit.

Can definitely work with casual summer suits in cotton or linen. Especially if you wear the suit with a t-shirt (knitted is best as it gives the t-shirt a bit of structure over and above the norm₩

I'm glad you made this. I've always been a proponent of sneakers and suits, specifically chuck taylor all stars with a suit. Recently I've come across some people who have said that wearing sneakers with a suit is a big fashion faux paus, and whilst i do agree that for extremely formal situations it's taboo, for the occasions that you have listed, it's completely fine! The main occasions i do wear a suit, it's for a party or for my own personal enjoyment, so I wear what i think looks good.

There is a lot of flak being thrown at this Antonio. I do like the video and you taking an honest approach on it. In my opinion I am on the fence. Personally, I would not wear leather sneakers with a suit. I would wear a modified Oxfords with wider toe box due to my feet being wide and I don't like dress shoes. From the idea of Function Fit and Form, sneakers are usually meant for more casual settings. However Suits have either been forced to be more casual or died in all of the younger men's wardrobes lets be clear. This brings a new idea to the table. I also add another thing you said in your videos, "Know the Rules and purposefully Break Them" the right way. Sneakers are that. In the end, it is a style choice clearly devided amongst those more conservative and those looking at rules as guide lines. If done correctly it works. And what a better way to rebel and protest fashion if that is also the desire. Most dress shoes are binding on the foot and their vamps too tight for me. i think they are losing more of a battle in function than sneakers

This is much more than what I can stand. After sending this comment, I'm unsubscribing. Sorry Antonio, but "Style", "sneakers" and "suits" in the same packet, is too much for me.

Sir, I have been watching your videos for a long time and respect your consistent message and content output. As a young man and junior Marine on MSG Duty, I have been heavily drawn to your channel and looking to you for your insight in style and guidance on becoming a more competent, confident man. With that being, this video came to a shock to me. While I already know and accept coming into your videos that these are your opinions, this video seemed somewhat off brand. I’m sure your son looked great for his prom and I am happy for him to be able to experience the prom post pandemic, I think the sneakers should stay there as something of a memory for him, not something to bring into his future as a student, a serviceman or what have you. While the Overton window for acceptable menswear has been shifting more and more to the casual side, I would argue that we aren’t at sneakers and suits yet, nor would that be a positive direction in classic attire. Too many times have I walked into a mens retail store and been solicited by an overly trendy dressed man in a tight Neapolitan suit with a ridiculously high break and sneakers. I’ve had to walk away simply because I couldn’t take the man seriously! I may not be as staunch as Sven-Raphael at gentleman’s gazette, but I don’t think my judgement was unfounded. In my opinion if you’re dead set on having lapels and sneakers to blend in the rest with some jeans, I do it all the time. With all this being said I am looking forward to your videos every week, love your stuff, and my prayers go out to your family. Semper Fidelis!
