The best way I describe Quinn Hughes is he's the engine of Vancouver's offence. He drives the plays, the team constantly passes back to him in order to differ to his decision-making, probably because he skates and acts like he knows more what to do in any given offensive situation than anyone else on the ice. And, well, he does.

I've been watching hockey since early 80s. Yes I'm old. I can't even remember seeing a defenseman who skates in every direction with speed and finesse as Hughes does and that's with the puck, passing and receiving in virtually any direction. Truly in my opinion a generational defenseman who's Jersey WILL be in Vancouver rafters when his playing days are done. GUARANTEED

I was mad when the Wings drafted Zadina. I saw Hughes at U of M and it was so obvious. I don’t know what the top 6 were thinking
@HousewolfDaddy
@HousewolfDaddy 4 жыл бұрын
His risk was so high I’m kind of glad the Wings didn’t pick him. I loved watching him play for the NTDP and U of M but his type of offense takes him out of position a lot, and his defense wasn’t bad but it wasn’t noticeably strong either prior to the NHL. I’m glad to see Quinn doing well, but the last thing the Wings needed was a high risk -high reward pick when a potential top overall scorer fell that far down for no reason other than teams picking positional needs.
@probert2431
@probert2431 4 жыл бұрын
@@HousewolfDaddy I respectfully disagree with you. He is just what the Red Wings need. A player who can change a game, rushing the puck, getting it out of the defensive zone and flat out making plays especially on the power play. I was watching the draft that day and when the wings pick came up I was hoping and praying they would take Hughes. I wonder if Yzerman would have taken him instead of Holland. The Canucks have an all-star for the next 10 years.
@HousewolfDaddy
@HousewolfDaddy 4 жыл бұрын
probert 24 I don’t disagree that he’s a game changer, or that he probably will be for a while now. At the time of the draft though, I wouldn’t have been sure based on what his play at U if M and US NTDP was like. He was always an amazing skater, but even at those levels (more so with the NTDP) his style of controlling the puck took him out of position a bit too much and created turnovers. On a team where we have no defense, I wouldn’t have taken a high risk offensive defensemen with that pick. Boqvist had the same issue for me although his playing style is more traditional. It’s easy to second guess now but Zadina is looking like he’ll be a great scorer for us as well. If Seider pans out as a true 1A and hopefully someone like Tuomisto ends up as good as he looks as well, and our defense/team will start looking more like a contender again.

If Yzerman was drafting instead of Holland, the Red Wings would have taken Hughes. If I remember, Zadina was considered even with Svechnikov for the second best player available, after Dahlin, so when he fell to 6th, the Wings thought he was too good to pass up.

Looking at the draft class he was kind off by a few picks, but he wasn't French Canadian so Montreal wouldn't touch him, Carolina didn't need a defenseman(especially now), Detroit was hunting for another forward, and let's just not talk about Ottawa. Please until we get Melnyk out let's ignore them. I may be a Sabres fan, but I miss when they weren't competing for last in the league. I want the brawl to happen again. However Melnyk is running that team into the ground. I'm already calling it that Brady is going to have a hell of a time negotiating his first big boy contract because Melnyk will want it as cheap as possible.

Basically I think Dahlin, Svechnikov are definitely still better picks than Quinn Hugues, but he definitely should have been top three. This is my ranking: 1. Dahlin 2. Svechnikov 3. Hughes 4. Kotkaniemi 5. Tkachuk Brady Tkachuk is a beast at generating offence, although it hasn't translated to as much points as it should so far. Kotkaniemi was highly effective at 5v5, both defensively, and offensively in his rookie year, and struggled with many injuries this year. He's still only 19. I think ultimately his upside is the among highest of the bunch and he'll become a terrific C. Dahlin will be amazing, and Svechnikov will clearly be a 100pts guy.

Tkatchuk value on ice FAR FAR outweighs only his goals and assists. And he can score and make plays. I see him as a close to ppg guy in his prime with a better team playing with good players and some what organized cohesive team. The few games as a rookie he got a chance with Stone, he was killing it offensively. Wait until you pair him up with that style with Lafrenier or Byfeild or Stutzle or maybe even 2 out of those 3 lol He will be getting easy 80-90pts with that bruising high intangibles style

Quinn Hughes is playing top minutes for a playoff team, Erik Karlsson came into a garbage Ottawa team with barely any ice time and dropped 26 in 60, 45 in 76 in his second year and then when Ottawa was a playoff team dropped 79 pts in 82. Although Quinn's production has been top tier, I think Makar will be the best offensive defenseman ahead of both Hughes and Karlsson
