I'd argue that there might be a disproportionate amount of jewish communists, but not because of any sort of "uniquely jewish mindset" or whatever. @burninsherman1037 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! When you're being demonized, and beaten down by a political and economic system, it's far easier to see its flaws. I think that is indeed an element, but at the risk of a gross generalization, the jewish (religious) education has a higher (in comparison to other religious schools or even the secular public schools) focused on debating and some parts of the talmud are basically a compilation of logic discussions akin to plato's works, so I would guess it is both this exclusion that leads to a desire to be un-opressed and a "culture of debate" that leads to at least a more skeptical outlook on what is given as facts by the conservative status quo. That is why I think some of the most important jewish intellectuals came from Rabbi families, and - I'm making some pure speculation here- if they retained a fraction of this intellectual engagement in the education of their children it is most natural to have free thinking people (not essentially left-wing, of course)

On one hand I agree that Whatifapeshit makes low quality content, but I have to point out that under most capitalist systems, you are free to form your own communes, kibbutzes, hippie cult compounds, etc. The main objection a conservative has to socialism is that in a commune, you can freely associate with and shun people as you choose. However, under a socialist government, you are stuck with lazy cattle who don't contribute to the system, and only the government can really take action against that. In theory you can have a sort of Leninist system where unemployment is illegal, but in practice I have zero faith in First World Western society to actually go along with that and lay down the law.

In case anyone is interested: Gnosticism refers to several religious movements that were active between 100 and 600 AD. The basic features were: - Absolute division between (worldly) evil and (spiritually) good - Matter is bad and created by evil. Souls are trapped in this evil matter and are supposed to return to God through cleansing rituals - Cleansing rituals and connection with God were treated as secret knowledge. Aka mysticism. Communists very, very rarely teach these strange things. EDIT If you are really looking for an ancient communist religion, choose Mazdakism (Persia 550 AD). This includes: - Abolition of private property - No more nobles and kings - the sharing of women between many men These ideas were so dangerous that, unusually, Persia and the Roman Empire worked together to eradicate this religion

True, communism has its own wildly unscientific weird metaphysics to deal with. It doesn't need gnosticism on top of it.
@olindblo Жыл бұрын
The link between gnosticism and communism arises *only* when looking at the history of ideas from a perspective that 1.) is organicist in its historiographical mode (a term conveniently borrowed from Hayden White), 2.) places christianity as the centered subject of that organicist history, and 3.) does so for metaphysical reasons rather than historicist. Of course, all three points go fully unacknowledged by whatifalthist, because if they didn't, then he would have even less wiggle room to bend his "sources" to fit his worldview. The only thing connecting gnosticism and communism is that, from that perspective, both gnosticism and communism are peripheral enemies that "seek knowledge" and challenge christianity's position as the true subject and driver of history. To a christian, two enemies are always one and the same enemy. I wouldn't be surprised that if whatifalthist dedicated himself to being a christian proper, he would end up discovering the kind of orthodoxy that is being peddled by western "orthodox" bros in their teens/twenties farming clout on the internet; it fits his idea of christianity as the subject of history the best.
@tylerbozinovski427 Жыл бұрын
Figures like James Lindsay and TIKHistory cover the gnostic connection with Marxism a lot better than Whatifalthist does. As with all antisemitic conspiracy theories, there is a grain of truth that gets warped and twisted into a cudgel. While the whole secular bolshevism (and subsequent cultural Marxism) trope is absolutely an antisemitic dog whistle, there are reasons why communism was attractive to some Jews like my grandfather and great grandfather. Most importantly is the concept of "Tikkun olam", which translates to "fixing the world." In the Jewish tradition I was raised in (as the saying goes, two jews, three opinions and Orthodox Jews view tikkun olam differently), Tikkun Olam is synonymous with social justice, and mitigating inequities when possible (Israel is a whole other ball of wax that I'd rather eat glass shards than discuss. See above two Jews three opinions). Speaking truth to power is another important Jewish value. In the United States at least, communists were labor organizers and advocates for workers rights, which falls neatly in line with tikkun olam **and** speaking truth to power.

@@fallenicarus2685 im sure leftists strawman too, but "Believing fascism is inherently evil" is a bit different. Because while people have different definitions of facism, it is ultranationalist and tends to be very hierarchy focused. We leftists believe we have more common with the working class of other nationalities than our own overlords, we also think hierarchy is bad. So facism and Socialism is by nature in conflict, one is a culture war, that other cultures are inferior and are the root of their problem, they also tend to strengthen hierarchy in its own culture. while socialism advocates for dissolution of national identities [not culture, just the idea that nationality is important] and want to destroy all hierarchy [well... not auth-left/tankies]. To me inequality seems to be part of the design for facism. Sure there might be some facist theory which isn't inherently hierarchical and I would love to know about it, but I have never come across any facist idea that isn't inequal by design.

Gnosticism wasn't rediscovered in the 1930s. Ireneus of Lyon wrote a detailed treatise on the subject that remained the standard textbook on Heresy until the reformation started spitting out so many heresies no one could keep up. Gnosticism remained a standard buzzword and is a big feature of the original post-French Revolution Anti-Masonic conspiracy theories that reactionaries have been recycling for two hundred years. First authentic Gnostic text, the Bruce Codex, was recovered in 1769, followed by the Askew Codex (Pistis Sophia) in 1773 and the Berlin/Akhmin codex in 1893. The Nag Hamadi library just confirmed the accuracy of Ireneus' account, which Bible Scholars had previously considered to be too polemnical to be trusted. There were a lot of Neo-Gnostic movements contemporary with Marx they just tended to innovate their own 'non-biased' versions rather than trust Ireneus' account. Usually they were just Christian Cabala and used the term Gnostic for anti-Catholic edgy-ness since it took a few decades of edge arms race to get to self-professed Satanism. Since Hegel does directly cite Kabalistic texts the connection isn't complete nonsense but is no more important than the obvious Christian Utopian Communism that preceded Marx. Or the Platonism which is the only real link between Kabala and Gnosticism.

I received training in philosophy and history in Geneva (Switzerland). At one point in my youth I was confronted with a problem: revisionism about the Nazi concentration camps. In short: the denial of the Shoah and Porajmos (Holocaust is a word laden with ideology). The decision of French, Italian, German and Spanish-speaking historians was to refuse to debate Holocaust deniers. An astronomer doesn't discuss cosmology with an astrologer. Social media inspired by a dominant cultural context (Anglophone) incense the debate. There is no debate with the falsifiers. That's what you do, you debunk not debate. Ah yes, on one side there is you, probably an academic (mastery of the use of sources) and on the other side a propagandist. I beg you not to present your confrontation as a debate. Debate is an organized and directed discussion made by people knowledgeable about a specific topic. Otherwise it's a discussion about opinions. Ps : I subscribed.

Interesting. I didn't expect to see such opinion here. This debate is absolutely filled with communist (well, western middle-class rich teenager "communist") propaganda and it is something I despise as much as nazi propaganda, being a hardcore anti-communist anti-nazi who was born in a socialist (marxist) country and our family was massacred by both mainstream socialists - nazis and communists. I do hate both. (I'm Czech, it is the majority worldview here). I wouldn't probably agree with your political stances, yet you stand by one very good principle - it is necessary to debate an ideological opponent. It is pointless to debate a propagandist. Although I see this video as two propagandists calling each other out. I noticed while a nazi might sometimes be willing to respond to actual arguments for some time before attacking and spewing hate, a modern western communist will never accept such a challenge as providing valid arguments. And understandably so - the western communists are not philosophers searching for the truth, they are religious cultists trying to spread the gospel (party propaganda). It is useless for them to debate with a Czech, Polish or Hungarian, we do have historical experience and they understand after few sentences they will not persuade us to join their cult. Thus they have zero interest in debating with us. And rightfully so as a holocaust denier has no interest in debating with Jews in Jerusalem about gas chambers being a hoax. By the way, never have I seen more hardcore personal attacks, more hate, more organised vandalising of a debate than the one time I mentioned the existence of a section of Dablice graveyard where the mass grave of newborns and babies is located. Babies of political dissidents who were tortured to death in front of their mothers by the communist regime secret police. This is a known location in Prague, there are official remembrance actions, it is about as undeniable as the existence of nazi concentration camps mass graves. Just by mentioning it I triggered hundreds, if not thousands of communist redditors who absolutely brigaded one single post on one subreddit by organising on 4 other subreddits and attacking in matter of minutes. I seriously doubt there is any possibility of a debate.

Okay, I saw this video. TIKhistory worked with primary sources, showed the quotas that proved - at least in his eyes - his hypothesis and figured out that it's an observation. I think, there were some good arguments in favour of gnostocism like his adaption of the believe, that Aryans were created by god as an antithesis to the jews, his strong believe that the Volk will have a transformation to a higher state, his differenciation between christianity and faith and his antipathy for freemasonry not because of their faith but of their conspirational working. It's a hypothesis. What do you hope for when you want someone else to debunk this
@AC-dk4fp Жыл бұрын
@@Bolle1701 Its a blatantly wrong hypothesis stated by a man who takes being religiously ignorant as a virtue and is way out of depth. TIKhistory uses no primary sources on Gnosticm or Marxism, only on Hitler. His sources for Gnosticism are a 30 year old essay collection of Western Esoterecism (a field of religious studies that touches on Gnosticism but is focused on a whole different millenia), a 70 year old work of political philosophy with no claim to historical rigour that he misuses as a historical work and a series of lectures by a literal conspiracy theorist (not to say that conspiracies have no historical validity). He claims that demonic possession, the desire for an eschatological golden age and the concept of predictive prophecy are all gnostic parasitic beliefs poisioning true Christianity. This is the dumbest most religiously ignorant thesis I've ever heard. He's also unable to recognise that this whole 'parasitic religion' idea is just a repackaging of the very antisemiticism he quotes from Hitler in the same video and that his Conspiracy Theorist source is a crypto-Fascist. The simple fact is that Gnosticism is a highly contested category in the academic literature and a topic that has seen a lot of recent development so just quoting decade old works is simply insufficient. Which is very ironic since he's up to date on the controversy over Hitler's religion and has reached the correct answer, that Nazism is kind of confused. But then rather than accepting that confusion as well earned wisdom he tries to solve the issue by importing an even more debated term while being unaware of the debate around it. There is a reasonable argument that Hitler was in some ways gnostic but it would have to be made based on forms of gnostic belief actually accessible to Hitler, not on the works of political thinkers writing after Hitler's death based on ideas that were known to only a handful of cutting edge researchers in the 1930s.

I also know that the revolutionary part of the NS movement fought conservative "reactonary" elements like student fraternities, old elites a.s.o. Now that Hitlers world view was basically eclectic it may be possible that he read writings that could be claimed as "gnostic". In his "further evidences..." video TIKhistory uses only primary sources of Hitler's "Mein Kampf" and "Tischgespräche" and Chamberlain. Like I said, his "Hitler was a gnostic" claim is a hypothesis which he tries to strenghtens. I appreciate your answer but I don't see any falsification of TIKhistorys arguments. He says small business owners and farmers are "often quite poor" but this isn't true. Farmers especially are rich. Farm workers are poor, but that's not the same as being a farmer. And they both get lots of help from the government. Something like 40% of farm profit comes from subsidies and there are many gov programs to help funnel business to small business owners. Not exactly the self-sufficient, "I have agency and independence" vibe WIAH says he wants.

Correct, I didn't want to delve into too much of the minutia but in terms of the larger wealth disparity in the United States for example, farmers and small business owners quite often are quite poor or facing significant financial hardships in competition with larger corporations and conglomerates, the only problem is that the non-business owners are much, much poorer. The small business owner or the farmer can liquidate their assets to give them a bit of a windfall. The undocumented farm worker or the cashier who works for them cannot.

Well, depends. I’m a geology environmental scientist; lots of farmers yes make a lot of money but need to keep up as in equipment, treatment, and being able to grow one of two of the seeds of crop in whatever monopoly that seed belongs to. A lot are in heavy debt, constant upkeep. You’re correct, but just wanted to piggyback for you because I think it’s something people should know regarding industry. To just finish it’s a lot more complicated and this weird incely guy can’t even cite one source or look past anything and ask why ENOUGH TO OPEN GOOGLE SCHOLAR

@@FreddaYTif we speak about farmers only in terms of US, but the world doesn't end and stary with US, for example in Eastern Europe and third world countries farmers are poor, though in general rural people are poor in those countries.

@@007kingifrit Are you for real? Where is communism promoted on his videos regarding Althist? European social democrats are neither socialist nor communist, regardless if American right-wingers think this. They get elected in a democratic way like every other political party here, and btw not a single communist party is in German parliament for example. I am right-leaning myself but the stupid non-historical shit Althist pumps out is not accurate and clearly not insightful. It smells of populism and ideologies from 150 years ago, as if he has a fetish with absolute monarchism.

I'm probably not the typical audience for such channels, being a fairly conservative minded, Thomas Sowell idolizing, Born again Christian, but I did enjoy the attempt in rigorous adherence to sources and history. Not having a background in academia myself but only a deep thirst for accuracy and the truth, it's quite amusing to see these YT "intellectuals" having their asses handed to them. I pray that you will be well.

Even if you're a conservative I don't know why you'd idolise Sowell, the man's an idiot even by the standards of the right. He genuinely doesn't understand any of the concepts he discusses, even from his own ideology.
