Truly hip hop producers are so under appreciated. Especially considering they’re now the main reason a song is even listenable
@MrOzzification10 ай бұрын
The rap game is fucked up for producers. They are doing more of the heavy lifting these days but because they're often not seen, it's very difficult for them to build clout and a following. Also they have to deal with rappers not paying them or even giving credit. Non-payment is even a problem with established big name rappers.
@kaison1220510 ай бұрын
@@MrOzzification fr I’ve been developing my production skills for a few years and like it’s truly a bulk of music even pop and rock at this point utilize at least 1 engineer and that engineer is making at least like 1/3rd of the song. Be it just the vocal processing,arrangement, mixing and side chain or full pieces of the instrumental or the entire beat itself. And they don’t get much credit in any of the genre’s unless you’re a music nerd at this point. Or unless that producer themselves is already an artist. But in rap the not paying, not getting payed/credit is pretty fuckin absurd especially considering a lot of these new mc’s wouldn’t even have a flow you could listen to without an engineer to process their vocals. (Not to be some kinda purist I love vfx but there’s a difference between artistic use and it being a crutch cause you can’t rap or sing) let alone that the only thing decent is the beat. But the problem is unlike with songwriters who have bmi producers lack any substantial union and there will always be some teen or early 20 something willing to sell their developing skill for less.

I think what you said about a lot of new rappers trying to be drake, future, or kanye is the core of the issue. I personally am a huge Future fan but don't really care for his disciples in this newer generation and to me its because it feels inauthentic. Future lived an incredibly disadvantaged life and became one of the single coolest mfers of all time. Most people cannot do that. Most rappers cannot do that. That doesn't stop a lot of new rappers from putting forward that same persona, even if they can't even remotely relate to it. So many artists don't understand the importance of actually being yourself instead of trying to fit the mold of whatever successful archetypes that came before them. Teezo Touchdown, like you mentioned, is a great example of an artist being authentic and getting recognition because of it, deservedly so. Only Future can be Future, only Kanye can be Kanye, and only Drake can be Drake.
@Two-ToneMoonStone10 ай бұрын
And they misunderstand something about Future: Future doesn't care what other people think of him, that doesn't mean he doesn't care period. You don't make shit like Codeine Crazy, Purple Reign, or Puffin' on Zooties by not caring.

Feels like hip hop's hit it's grunge slump, and Rodeo was it's Nevermind. If you didn't live through the 90s, alt rock hit a huge creativity slump when Nirvana sent the grunge sound through the stratosphere. For years major labels completely lost focus on finding the next wave and lasered in on trying to find the next Nirvana. However, even that didn't go on as long as this cycle of psychedelic trap has maintained popularity. By the time Nevermind hit 10 years old the industry had moved on to nu-metal and indie rock was starting to come up, but Rodeo turns 10 next year and this sound is still dominating.

I think the women in hip hop are more willing to try new things. Case in point, Megan Thee Stallion getting Spiritbox to do a “rock remix” of Cobra (I know rock/rap collabs are nothing new but it’s been a while since a high profile one happened so it might as well be new again, plus apparently Megan advocated for more screaming on the track than Spiritbox had originally put in). The song might not be as good as the Linkin Park/Jay-Z collabs but it’s still awesome to see and I’d love to see what a band like Spiritbox could do with more than 48 hours. Meanwhile, I think that if someone said the words “rock remix” to JPEGmafia he’d have a brain aneurysm. And that’s not even getting into the lack of artist development in rap these days. These kids blow up off a SoundCloud demo and maybe 6 months worth of club shows and are immediately thrown to the wolves to play Coachella and Rolling Loud with no experience and no one to guide them.

They aren’t…none of the female rappers are packing venue caps at 3k on tours. This is coming from someone on the inside. They are promoted heavily but if you can’t put butts in seats you’re not running anything. Latto, Megan have never did solo tours and there’s a reason why. Touring dictates who’s the artist moving the needle and making labels money. I agree that it is boring and new artist aren’t making hits or trying to make hits. Yes the high pitched male rappers is funny. Yes the ladies are rapping but the guys who rap aren’t being forced to make hits to drop albums…that’s the difference. Artist would never drop an album if they did have a guaranteed hit to break an artist. Lots of context. Also a lot of artist don’t know how to perform. I’ve been to hundreds of concerts. Also rappers aren’t benign creative. 8:19 is a great point.

The main reason is that the most important male artists either all died (X Pop Smoke and Juice WRLD) or fell off too quickly (Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch). The only real rap "superstar" still left that came after 2018 is Gunna. Everybody else is just a superstar from earlier with no one to pass the torch to. (I won't count Yeat because he has his own style completely). Plus Female rappers do a great job carrying the torch of 2000s Southern rap and its energy and rawness. It's a really fun and fresh brand of rap. Male rappers lost that rawness to Autotune and melodic trap beats.

I think there's an extra missing element to it - the class element. I tend to lean towards stuff (of any genre) that feels like a more heartfelt, soulful representation of what people at the bottom are feeling. A lot of the female rappers are still talking about chasing money but it's done with that unapologetic ratchet vibe that a lot of the working class women I know completely embody. Most of the guys these days are coming from wealthy households and putting on a front as being hard but are completely out of touch, and you can feel that as a result their music isn't trying to say something. They aren't yearning for anything or trying to get away from anything, they just are distracting themselves from the lack of meaning in their lives.
@LoveJungle42010 ай бұрын
It's just an aesthetic difference. You want bars to be strong and direct, but this is a jaded and nihilistic generation. Bars that are more liminal, doomer, hopeless are en vogue. Hip hop has become more goth; more emo. Black men weren't allowed to be these things 20 something years ago, so we're getting to know all these new areas of self expression.

The way you said literally every word that has been on my mind since i got into rap. Im a 15 y/o boy who only got into rap back in 2018/2019 and i swear to god, out of the newer rappers the only rappers i listen to are ALL WOMEN. I really feel like this whole conversation can be applied to the music industry as a whole because men lately have been getting so comfortable with being boring and putting out soft and low energy songs and its driving me insane. It really sucks that for my generation we are just being fed nothing by these male artists and were just fine with it. Im tired of people acting like women havent been running the game for years now because its literally undeniable, theyre the only ones putting actual energy into their music while most male rappers get carried by beats and pretty backround music. There's a reason why for most of these rappers the most memorable part of their song is the woman's feature.

Old head here, and the notion that old school rappers had to have a great show/be great performers to make it is 100% old-head "in my day" false. Outside of The Fugees (who I saw open up for Lords of the Underground on a college tour), Tribe, The Roots, Method Man, and DMX, the great majority had NO stage presence, did the same weak-ass walking back and forth jukebox concert ,where their live performance completely lacked whatever magic/spark that the records had. It took Jay FOREVER to get his show up to par (and he admits he didn't really step up until he saw tour mate DMX's show.)

Right now in mainstream rap/hip-hop the women are superior emcees and rappers, and make better music. There's also still a lot of variety in the production and vocals, which makes it more interesting. A lot of the men seem to be chasing the same sound. Megan, ENNY, GloRilla, Noname, K Carbon, Rhapsody, Latto, Gloss Up, Slimeroni, Aleza, ScarLip... Some of these women are from the same region of the country, some same city, yet sound completely different. I'd also say the women from the South were also heavily influenced by Gansta Boo (R.I.P.), especially the ones from Memphis like GloRilla.
