"Run the country like a business" ...yeah because we all know how BIG businesses treat their employees 😬
@rhondah1587
@rhondah1587 5 сағат бұрын
The notion that the U.S. government is a business is preposterous. If you want to call it anything, it's a public trust that is supposed to take in tax money and then spend it to make life better for those living in the country. It's not about making a profit or making politicians and lobbyists wealthy or giving all out tax money away as corporate welfare.
@loki2240
@loki2240 4 сағат бұрын
I think that started becoming really popular when W ran for POTUS. Since then, we've had multiple bailouts of big businesses and the high level executives gave themselves big bonuses after running the business into the ground. It's disturbing to me that so many people still like that idea. And that's just some surface level events that people like Riberto should be aware of. Businesses operate for profit, and it should be obvious that government shouldn't operate for profit. Government should provide services to maximize the public good, not exist to maximize profit (and who would get those profits?). Even in terms of limiting waste, again we can see that big businesses often have a lot of waste (including absurd compensation for the CEO and high level executives) that's compensated for by exploiting lower level employees, providing lower quality (and sometimes unsafe) products and/or services, buying smaller businesses and offloading debt into them, government bailouts, etc. And as Jimmy said, Trump often just didn't pay people. Big businesses have also cut costs and increased profits by shutting down or drastically reducing U.S. operations and setting up new operations in foreign countries with much cheaper labor and much less government regulation of employment and pollution. We already have problems with politicians cutting funding to programs that benefit regular people, when they want to cut costs (or give tax cuts to wealthy entities - like Trump did - and still have a balanced budget). But unlike big businesses, they can't take our money, shut down U.S. operations, and govern and exploit people in foreign countries instead. Businesses also lay off older employees and replace them with younger employees who will accept significantly lower compensation. And businesses also hire undocumented immigrants because they'll work for ridiculously low compensation. Do we want the government to cut costs by ending the programs that give public money to people with disabilities (including veterans), poor people (including children and people who are too old to work), etc.? If you cost more than you pay in taxes, the government just "lays you off?" I'm not through the call. So, I don't know if Jimmy mentioned Trump overvaluing his assets to get loans, making a lot of money through branding (including buildings and Made in China products), allegedly losing money operating a casino (he almost certainly embezzled money out of the casino). But again, it's disturbing that some people are still attracted to the approach of operating the government like a business.

@@loki2240 Republicans have long hailed deregulation of business and corporations would enhance the economy. The disaster we've seen when the banks were deregulated almost caused the collapse of the entire world's economy and it was all due to GW Bush's policies. It baffles me that in 2024 and after the last 10 years, people are still saying "Trump would be good because he is a great business man." I'll admit that when i first Trump was running in 2015 my knee jerk reaction was "maybe he will be good since he is a successful business man and not a politician" because all I knew about him was pop culture references calling him rich. However, as soon as I saw his rhetoric and what he was running on, I was disabused of that notion. To the point that when I found out he won, I was sick to my stomach.

I'm old and knew who he was before 2015 and I sincerely thought people also could see it enough to keep him out of office. When he won the Electoral College, I too felt sick, sick for what was to come and he did in fact cause the country great embarrassment and literally is responsible for 100s of thousands of deaths by way of his mishandling the pandemic. His ballooning of the debt was the least of his failures as a president but enough to condemn it.

Are you prepared to possibly be questioned about it and possibly found guilty of being disqualified for any civil rights or even citizenship? Do you want to live under an authoritarian Christian theocracy? If not, you cannot in all good conscious vote for trump. Not every liberal supports banning guns. I am about as liberal on social policies as you can get. While I am not a socialist I do believe in having a very generous social safety net including tax-funded higher education, healthcare, and child & elderly care. But I do not support banning guns, even AR-15 style guns. But I do believe we need stronger safety measures to stop mass shootings and gun violence. Liberals/progressives/leftists are not monolith on guns. And, ironically, while the right claims the left is coming for their guns, no liberal/Democratic President has done so. Not Clinton, not Obama, nor Biden. It's just fear-mongering to people who just believe what they are told without verifying

It always confuses me that people don't see how hypocritical it is to demonize civil service "waste" when the workers get a slightly higher than "industry standard" wages or are not worked as hard as humanly possible, but are completely fine with "shrinkflation", record profits directly tied to massive layoffs, "big" industries colluding to maximize customer prices, and "shareholder value" being absolutely the only legal responsibility of executive management. As a human with logical reasoning and common human decency/empathy, I would much rather any "excess" profit go to the wages of the employees than the silver spoon, trust fund babies who are going to charge me as much as possible anyway. “The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.” - John Kenneth Galbraith

Steven, RFK was not running as a Democrat so he would not have been able to participate in the Democratic convention to begin with. This is also important: Conventions are a tradition, not a law. There is nothing in the constitution or the law requiring conventions. The last time the Democrats had an open convnetion was 1968 and it was a disaster that cost the Dems the election. So they don't do them anymore. By the time the convention takes place, the candidate is more-or-less already selected. It may suck - I have mixed feelings on it - but it's pointless to claim any injustice since there are no rules that dictate how they are supposed to be run.

Historically in the U.S. if a person had any parent or grandparents that had a drop of anything other than white European ancestry, they were considered black. Of course, it is racist and failing to recognize the blatant discrimination that has existed and still does is a serious problem. I also recall the prejudice against Italian immigrants who were also looked at as not white enough.

San Francisco California reporting in and I've never heard Kamala say she considers herself Indian-American rather than Jamaican-American or biracial. Literally never heard her speak about herself in racial terms as anything more than a lead in or aside. Running for DA in SF it would make zero political sense to say hey guess what I don't consider myself black. Same thing when running for attorney general or Senate. Has she spoken about her mother and relatives and coconut trees? Yeah. But it's white Erica who forces anyone who's part African American into the black box, not they themselces. As a life long progressive, look up childhood recognition of vowel sounds. Some have real difficulty in hearing the difference and/or pronouncing the difference and we all lose the ability to improve after a certain age, and (of course) some are just mispronouncing it out of hatred/bullying. The problem is that you have no possible way to determine what the actual cause is. Baseless, hyperbolic assertions for the purpose of de-legitimizing or de-humanizing the opposition and falsely propping up your narrative... Not even once... Not even to prove a point... Not even to support the moral side… Unless you don’t care at all about being part of the problem and confirming to the wilfully ignorant that they are justified in dismissing anything they don’t like as “fake news”.
