Yeah the character really does appear out of nowhere in the middle of this big arc. Like, Oda couldn't even put a masked Yamato standing the corner of the room while Kaido's talking to his subordinates in a scene before WCI. Heck, even Pudding was shown when we first saw Big Mom lurking in the shadows. Would justify the character's presence instead of what was executed.

Okiku, an actual trans character, is so much better of a character with a better story than the One Piece Roman Reigns. I am glad SHE is not a member of the crew and that SHE stayed back at Wano. Also, in the case of Momo. Remember that in his mind his parents died months ago not decades like for everybody else. Then this crazy chick shows up and starts pretending to be his father and to top it off it is the daughter of the man that killed his parents. Though I don't hate Yamato I do agree with Ludee27 a 100% on one thing: the way Yamato was introduced felt incredibly gimmicky and was a pretty bad move on Oda's part. Honestly re-reading Wano after it fully finished up though slow at points the first half of the arc is actually really good really setting up the country and a lot of the key players. There aren't much for a lot of the Straw Hats to do but they do a great job setting up the plight of this world and all the various moving pieces within it and yeah the big flashback really shows how awesome Kozuki Oden is. And yeah Oden is introduced as a badass from his onset but you see his development and how he changed and where he ultimately stood as you get why the country was so beloved with him. And honestly the first half also makes Orochi much more interesting a villain and... yeah if I may be controversial for a second I feel Kaidoh is actually not that great a villain when it comes to One Piece. Like design and power wise he's cool but in terms of overall personality and attitude now that we've seen the full picture... guy pails in comparison to Doflamingo or even Big Mom or had a lot more going for them. Honestly feels like Oda may have realized that which is why he tried pushing the idea of Kaidoh having a kid so hard; to really not only show how more horrible he is but to give him some other kind of character and relationship outside his inner circle to flesh him out some which yeah didn't really work. And Yamato didn't really work because just as we were getting into the swing of the actual fights and trying to set up who would go after who and trying to scale some of the opponents we'd get later... now we have to spend time on this totally new character who was only set up as this like background element but no is this big major deal. It'd be kind of like if say Franky was introduced as a character... not in Water 7, but halfway through Enis Lobby and all of his story and motivation was fleshed out THEN not before. Though I wouldn't really say Mary Sue as that would imply Yamato was more useful to what was happening then she really was throughout the arc. Like yeah she helped out at points but still in more minor ways but still with a super lot spent on the character even her backstory. And yeah as pointed out a few times here you can't claim Yamato as male and be labled anti trans if you have no problem accepting Kiku (a better character who should have been honestly treated better in the story) is woman as they actually commit to that. I don't know how you can say it's committed that Yamato's a man if Sanji is still going gaga for her like any other woman. Thankfully some of the hype for this character has died down now that we're fully into another arc but yeah hopefully Yamato changes and ditches the idea she's Oden which yeah super disrespectufl still fronting that when you're hanging out with the family of Oden all the time.

She went in a sub-plot with some bombs that ended being basically useless, fought with Kaido a little, and then went with Momo telling him for a lot of chapters "you can do it, believe in yourself, you're my son". The only thing that makes her interesting by herself is that Kaido abused of her because she identified herself as Oden since she was a child, but what is the message of that? Not everything needs to have a message, but if the only reason that flashback exists is for context (of something that we could've already imagine), what is Yamato's character about? Why is she in the story? If the only thing she's going to do is random bs that any other character can do, then why making her a character at all? Like, the most interesting thing about Yamato isn't Yamato herself, are her connections. Although I'm not a blind hater towards her, I want Yamoto to have at least something interesting because I love One Piece and I like her design a lot, so if you can tell me, what is so good about Yamato, I'll be glad to hear you, but for me making a character that just by context is of the most important in the One Piece world, and then making her be so boring doesn't make me like her at all.

And that’s what he choose to write for her when he did… how is that a detriment against her at all sense it’s what oda planned for her… I fail to see how any of that is used as an excuse when your just listing off bullet points and condensing them down instead of looking at the context your leaving out between them… it’s rather disingenuous to making a case against anything cause it’s heavily implied personal bais… She only went down to stop the bombs after holding off Kaido sense Luffy took over the fight… and the bombs are more a product of odas need to put a active timer in the arc to work against that has nothing to do with her … she just happened to be the one oda felt the need to handle that sense she has knowledge of them and the layout onigashima to begin with… Ok so she held of kaido?! It’s complete ignoring context and or odas purpose for her being there otherwise she wouldn’t exist or would have been a one off side character… yet he gave her all of that and so much more you refuse to acknowledge more less be fair to… that’s a pure matter of personal opinion and narrow perspective… Also extremely opinionated and limited view of being willing to be impartial more less heavily unbais which none of this is btw… she connections are one aspect of her character and arc but you can’t see her character traits or relate to her which is fine but don’t pretend like nothing is there… If you willing to listen things out then please stop making personal excuses for her and how you feel… all you have to say is I don’t like her and that’s my opinion but saying all this extra stuff like it’s nothing or actively detracts from her is a pure matter again of personal opinion… I want to share more but I’m not even sure if it’s worth my time to reply… I could do the same thing to your favorite character and I wouldn’t accomplish anything of value… being so blind to what we see rn and what is to come is completely different… You have to look at what and why of did for her rn and there is more to come with her in the future… the fact she isn’t herself but pretending to be oden is the key driving force for her character as of rn… And it’s in that aspect where her character arc is setup… everything we saw in wano was purely the first half of the total puzzle and it’s not even a fair representation of her as her own unique and interesting character… cause there is so much more to come but choosing to ignore all of it when it’s so blatant is very unfair to oda and others… I’m not the only person out there who enjoys her and or loves her character for who she is and what she can be… and we deserve that chance cause of how poorly oda handled her at the end of wano leaving her behind… It’s bad enough being a Yamato fan after all the endless gender debates, not seeing her join when oda told us she would to our faces and years of endless/constant stuff like this thrown in our faces… It’s not fair for my and other enjoyment seeing our favorite character berated and mocked when it could easily be done to other characters but you don’t see that happening… And honestly at this point I want to care about this but I don’t… it’s far to much of a headache to try and find love for a series and a character that brought a little amount of joy who got left behind and is continued to be treated so poorly… You want one nice thing for a story and a character you care about and this is the end result… I don’t even know why I bother saying any this…😓

As a small addendum to my comment all I’m going to say is this… For all the things I’ve said I’ll be very honest (you can believe me or not or mock me idc…) She meant something to be personally… and she does to a lot of people who like her… and it was special and clearly oda cared enough to give her anything… When he wrote her and told us she would join that meant something… cause even if others don’t see it we do and we deserve to have a little joy for a story so many of us have read for years… Beyond all the personal bias and criticism there is a genuine story and a genuine character here that not all but some of us treasure… and we all had our hearts broken cause of how oda handled her… Me personally I’ve lost most of my passion/ drive to care about the rest of this story so maybe that’s on me and maybe that’s cringy or whatever you want to think of it… But it meant something special… and it got taken away… and nothing but mockery and endless undeserved and unfair criticism have come as a result… If this was your favorite character you would feel the same way… I ain’t asking for anything special or treatment but just to understand what you say about something I like could easily be said about something you like… And I don’t even have the benefit of being able to defend or enjoy her anymore after wano… I’ve had to see all of it and know I’m a laughing stock for being a fan of her… Cause oda made me care for this story and he made me care for her… and that’s all I wanted but idk what or why I even care about this utterly pathetic story anymore… Sorry I even bothered to reply it was a waste of both of our time…😓

@@CrimsonKaiserx8 nah it's ok, I gonna be honest, Yamato is probably my single least favorite character in all One Piece, I just didn't connect with the her backstory for how similar it was to ohters, how short, and how was something that at the end of the day you could imagine before even read it. But you shouldn't deserve be mocked for having Yamato as your fav character, we all see different things in different characters, and maybe something was a meh for me could be your favorite moment in the series. And I ofc is personal bias, everyone has their own definition to what is a good and a bad character, but when I see a character in a story, I wonder why are they for in, and when I see at Yamato I just don't see why Oda decided to give her roles so secundary being such an important character for the arc. Like, for now I can see that Oda is trying to make a character that tries to be someone else to be strong, and being confident of herself, just to then realize that she must be nobody else than herself and that kind of stuff, but if nothing of that was touched in Wano, then what is Yamato about? I didn't her connections are what makes her a bad character, but I said is all what makes interesting, since I feel all I said, I see those connections like the flashback with Ace and I think "wow, hiw cool is Ace", instead "wow, Yamato's character made me feel this way"". I can see why you feel like that towards the story, yourself admit how poorly was the character threated, and personally came to a comment of a video called "Why Yamato SUCKS: The Definitive Video" and asked to a guy thay clearly doesn't like Yamato why doesn't and acuse him of being of biased? (ofc I'm, is MY opinion, objetivity when you criticize fiction doesn't exist). Nobody likes being moked, nobody likes being told that what they feel towards something they love is trash, and if all you read online is negative opinions towards is normal getting defensive. I know what is being a fan of something super disliked, I've been fan of My hero academia for a long time and my favorite character there is Deku, my favorite One Piece character is Sanji, I evee people online hating on things that I'm more attached like my skin color, my nationality, my langauge, and a lot of other stuff. But at the end of the day this is the internet, people have the right to be as harsh as they want to all kind of media, people can dislike things for the sake of dislike them and doesn't have to be wrong. If you're in the internet, and express why you like so much Yamata, and a random guy comes and tells you how bad she actually is, then that guy is a big asshole, but if come to place where someone is hating on Yamato and you come to tell them that they're wrong what they see as a bad character isn't the same for you, then what does that make you? I don't if I made my point clear, but Yamato is clearly very important for you, and with this I don't wanna make you feel worse. I just want to say that people are allowed to have negative emotions towards that character, but nobody should tell YOU how you feel towards her. If you wanna share with me why Yamato is important to you tell me, maybe that make me appreciate what you feel for the character (maybe not), I just like hearing different opinions from all kind of stuff.
