Point of order: Most people dont just spend all the money they have, they also spend money they dont have.

I rid myself of consumerism and debt as soon as I sat down with myself and noted all the outgoings and bad habits. It was then clear why I was in so much debt and living from pay cheque to pay cheque. Created a worksheet and stayed disciplined for 5 years. Now, I've cleared all my debts and achieved great things along the way and I can't stop improving myself after seeing the results. Stay Uncommon, Good Luck to you all.

We dont live paycheck to paycheck. We did just buy a new heater. Our minisplit isnt big enough to heat the whole house. We ordered a smaller one to balance the temperature in the whole house. We are also insulating the attic and basement. Winter we spend to keep the house comfortable. We are simplifying our lives to the point that we are probably the most boring people. My sister and her husband stayed with us for a month. No tv! OMG! Yes, no tv.

The urge to buy can never outweight financial freedom. And freedom is not free, it comes with a price and a trade off. Those urges are like sugar, its not good for you and necessity buying is like intermittent fasting it sheds whats unimportant eventhough its freakin hard but its rewarding.

Great points! And also be intentional with where we spend our money, who do we want to support? Amazon is working hard to block employees from unionizing, to keep salaries and conditions for their workers as low as possible. I get a bit angry, imagining contributing to certain jerks wealth while they cold-heartedly block improvements for their employees and refuse to pay salaries their employees can actually live on. Helps me shop less in general 😊

I’m not supporting oligarchs anymore. At least, as much as possible in a system that is set up to benefit the people at the top. Cutting way back on spending, and spending at small businesses as much as possible. Sometimes, you just have to buy at the big guys to find what you need, but I am not defaulting to those businesses. I canceled my prime. Deleted all my meta accounts.

You may have heard of the 1970 Stanford Marshmallow experiment, which deals with delayed gratification. Basically, kids who could delay gratification were shown to have better outcomes in life. (You can read about it on Wikipedia.) I think this is a big factor re spending: we want immediate gratification and can't deal with the frustration of not getting what we want when we want it. Of course, Madison Avenue invests millions of $$$ telling us we SHOULD have it now, and sites like Amazon (and countless others) make this possible with the click of a button, as you say. We're prisoners of our psychology AND, knowing this, corporations manipulate us into buying what they're selling. It takes a lot of awareness to override this impulse and sometimes even awareness isn't enough (ask me how I know, LOL). Excellent video, as always!

This also misses the fact that we are hardwired to gather physical resources for times of scarcity. Because, with the advent of credit cards and digital money - it is an abstract concept so people are willing to expend this non-tangible resource in order to acquire tangible goods. This is why it is good to use cash and not cards...your brain will see the cash as a physical resource and so you will be less willing to hand it over.

It’s fine to want to feather your nest. I believe the need for beauty is an intrinsic human need. That said, if you are patient, you can do it for not much money and in an environmentally friendly way by shopping second hand, I am fortunate enough to have a nice, but not extravagant, older home filled with things I love, and pretty much every piece of furniture and every piece of decor in it was thrifted, or purchased second hand. (Except mattresses, I buy those new for obvious reasons.) When you slowly acquire things, purchasing things you truly love instead of trendy decor stuff from the store, you’ll love your stuff longer, and it won’t go out-of-style so easily, because you’ve built your own style. Dishes are my personal weakness. 🤷🏼♀️ I have enough now, I can usually tell myself NO. 😂 Shopping out of boredom is a thing I’ve had to really come to terms with too. 🙂

The "drug of consumerism" is no different than any other mind altering drug. Once you are "hooked" you have to fill that need and the cycle keeps repeating itself. Also, wanting to fit in and wanting to be seen as "rich" or at least well off is mind altering as well.

Let me preface by saying, I actually save more money than I spend. However, I have zero debt and have never been in debt. I wish I can stop spending on things I don't need. I will eventually return most of the items I purchased, but even with the few I've kept, I still don't need them. I have tried to stop shopping for 2 months and it worked for me, but I keep repeating the cycle. I am just glad I am able to return the items later when I realize I don't need them.
