Why you do NOT need SCAL 2 to cut anymore

Hi All, Just to let you know, after doing everything in this video to the T, my Cricut would recognize the USB but it wouldn't cut. I found out later that I had to download the 32bit version of SCAL5, even though I had a 64bit computer. That worked and I am now cutting perfectly. Thought it might be helpful if anyone else is having the same issue. This video has been very helpful with all the rest of the instructions. Thank you.

@@oespinoza89 no, I was still on the trial version so just downloaded the 32 bit. I would think if you've already bought it, you could put in your same purchase code for the 32 bit version. Alternatively, let the company know you've downloaded the wrong version. But if you're still in trial, rather make sure it works there first. Good luck

I have two older Pink Expressions vs 2.35, the Cricut Design Studio would not update my expressions. SCAL5 64 Bit would not work even though my laptop is a 64 bit, so I tried the SCAL5 32 bit worked perfectly. I did download theCricut plugin also. I am so happy, thank you ScrappDew.

THIS WORKS VERY WELL! I had SCAL2 for many years. Upgraded to a VALID version of SCAL4. Recently upgraded to SCAL5 Pro to cut SUPER-SIZED Decals! I'm cutting designs 5 feet wide by 22 inches high!!!!! EASY-PEASY! I have only purchased my software through CRAFT EDGE or SVG TOOLS!

Add me to the list of grateful people. I was able to take my V2.0 Expression to V2.43, so now I can use it as a cutter rather than a doorstop. One thing I did wrong was plugging my usb cable into a hub rather than directly to the computer. After correcting that, I was good to go. Thanks, Scrappy!

@@jenniferslager5328SCAL is used instead of Cricut software, not in addition to it. SCAL is not just cutting software - it is used for design etc., and it sends the information directly to the cutting machine. Hope that helps.

This is a great video. I purchased a used cricut and ran across your video. Have a Mac computer. The only difference was I had to purchase the file which allows the software to recognize my old machine. But for an extra $12 dollars it is well worth it. I also plan on purchasing the cuts a lot software. Not a big investment. It will allow me to create anything I imagine.

thanks for the tutorial. I got an old Cricut Expression I got for $20 working perfectly with Windows 10. Of course, all things computer related, there were some hurdles, but nothing major. I had to download and install the correct NET framework to get the cricut software to run so I could update the firmware. FYI, if anyone can't get it to automatically install when you run the software, you may have to search for it and install it yourself. then run the cricut software

Execellent tutorial. I previoulsy used Make the Cut with my CREX001, but that software is no longer supported. Purchased a license for Sure Cuts A Lot 6 through your site with a discount ($47 total) and took the sting off of paying full price from the developer. Works great and was about to buy another vinyl cutter (not from Provo Craft as I am still peeved they didn't support the earlier Cricuts... F' them!).

Hello! Thank you for your thorough tutorial. I followed the steps, I have the right Cricut (Expression), and I have the appropriate firmware (2.34). I'm able to add the Cricut to the list of cutters, but then when I go to cut, it says that it doesn't see a connection. I know it's not the cable because the computer recognizes the connection (makes the USB connect and disconnect sound when I turn on and off the Cricut). I have a cartridge in too, if that makes a difference. Any advice? Thank you!

Looking to see if anyone else has had issues with SCAL5 not cutting at the corners? I can still make clean cuts with scal2, but for some reason in 5 it neglects to cut the corners. I have the most updated version, 5.039 loaded on my windows 10 and my expression is v. 2.43. I've tried both the 64 bit and 32 bit versions. Anyone else run into this issue?

Yep my cricut personal does that as well. I can see that instead of it just dropping the knife and then starting to cut it will ramp the knife down during the first 1/4" to 1/2" of the cut, and it will not cut until after the knife hits the material after that ramp period, so you end up with uncut portions wherever the cut starts, and more each time it picks the knife up and starts a new cut. I am using the trial version of SCAL 5 and it does this, however a trial of SCAL2 does not do this. I am not sure if this is part of the trail version, but I dont think so.

I have no idea how I came across a FB group where a lady asked about using SCAL with an Expression she was gifted. All that did was drudge up all the bad feelings I had toward Provocraft and it's short sightedness when it sued Craftedge, MTC and some other 3rd party software company that allowed PC users, like me, to have freedom to design. After all, we were in the PC age. AND this happened after I wanted a larger Cricut. But luckily I already had SCAL 2. and decided to buy a Silhouette and was so happy SCAL was compatible. However, personal events prevented me from using a newer Cameo 2 because of size limitations. So, couldn't cut anymore cuz baby Cricut was tucked away and I couldn't get to it. Then Cricut's Joy came out and I forced myself to buy it cuz it was so small and I needed a cutter desperately at the time. But my GOD! That Design Space was so ancient. I was in "reverse" learning curve mode. So, I upgraded to Sil business edition to produce SVGs. There were times I would be using photoshop elements, SCAL 5, AND Sil at the same time. You see, I had SCAL2-5. Never let SCAL go. Thank you for your video. Now to find a 6" mat.❤ This video will save me now as I was able to retrieve my Baby Cricut and was thinking about opening

You can have the software on two computers. If you later update one of those computers, you would need to deactivate the license on one of them. Hope this helps.

So, I followed the directions...got Cricut Expression (1) firmware updated, got SCAL 5 loaded and the plugin installed. It cuts but two unusual things are going on. First, the Cut button does not work. If I use the Cutter button that does cut and the design cuts fine. Strange. Second, my wife is the user and she likes to line her designs up to the usable edge of the paper by aligning the paper to the usable edges of the mat and then aligning the designs to upper edge and left edge quickly using the H Align and V Align buttons on position and size menu. All looks well on the preview but when the cutter cuts it goes past the edge of the paper (and therefore also past the edge of the "usable" are on the mat. I'm not seeing where there is any alignment adjustment in SCAL 5 or SCAL 2 which we have been using for that matter. Any suggestions?

Hello, I had setup SCAL 5 on my previous MacBook and I am trying to setup my Circut to now work with an older but better condition MacBook 1.4Ghz, 2014. I can't seem to get through the first step of installing the design studio. I have Windows 11 but it looks like it downloads and then, just disappears from the bottom tool bar and can't be found. It does say at one point that "your.NET Framework version: Required Version:2 or greater"; it times out when it tries to download it but then asks if I want to continue and it loads a bunch of things, then disappears from my tool bar and Icon screen. Hoping I can still get my circuit expression to work with this laptop!

I have the original Cricut Personal from many years back. When I power up the machine, it tells me the firmware on it is V1.34. Anyways, I imported a simple shape to Sure Cuts a Lot 2 software (I have a valid software key from many years back), and tried to cut the shape the first time after 15 years :-)) After loading the 6x12 mat, I went to SCAL 2 sotware "Cutter" button, then to "Cut Design" button to start cutting. Unfortunately, the software brings out a window and says "Checking Mat...", but it does not proceed with actual cutting. Am I missing anything? Can you help?

Hello - I have an old expression pre-law suit days. I also have a cameo 3 and I was wondering if I update to scal5 will it still work with my expression? I also recently ran into a problem where I imported a png file, manipulated it and returned to cut the file a second time and all the little pieced jumped all over the screen. All the pieced had been color coded and neatly placed together. It was a strange occurrence and even when I returned to the last saved file the pieces were still out of place. I have swore my allegiance to this product for more than five years. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

I have an expression, and tried this out. I first tried the trial version, and it seemed to be working fine, so I upgraded to the regular. Everything I cut is cutting about a half of an inch off from where it is in SCAL. Their help team is not responding. Anyone know the answer?

This mostly seems to work. However on my cricut personal when it starts a new cut line instead of the blade just dropping onto the material and then it moving to cut out the shape, the blade ramps down during the first 1/2" or so of the cut which leaves about that much uncut. This happens after the knife is picked up and moved to a new spot. SCAL2 or using the control on the machine does not do the ramp thing. Seems like it may be an incorrect command being sent from libcutter, however I have not been able to find the configuration files for libcutter on my machine to see if I can change them. I am using SCAL5 and SCAL2 trial versions and v1.34 firmware. Any idea where I could go with the troubleshooting?

He explained in the video that you CAN NOT cut out any designs until you upgrade and that it will slice the design you are doing. Go to 19:40

@@Porchstg I do not think that is the problem I am having. It does slice through the design, very clearly with 2 lines at the end of the cut. The behavior I am describing happens each time the machine puts the knife down, it will move while the knife slowly comes down and thus will not cut the first 1/4" of the shape. For instance if you were to cut a circle it would leave the circle attached to the rest of the sheet with a 1/4" wide tab. But then it would cut through the whole circle 2 times due to the trial mode.

Downloaded design space as instructed to my computer but when I tried to update firmware on my cricut personal cutter and cricut expression it would not let me. The following message appeared. Your cricut not found. The USB drivers that this computer uses to communicate with the cricut may be out of date or not properly installed. I think you need one cartridge in the machine for it to cut, even if you're not using the cartridge and are using this software. Buy a cheap one on eBay.

Things that could go wrong. Version number on the Expression does it match the versions mentioned in the description? Expression has to be Original not the newer one. Are you on mac or windows?

@@galarrison I remember way back when Provo Craft sued, there was some directions that we should not update the firmware on the cricut. I thought that an updated firmware would cause the machine and software to not function. Just sharing my old knowledge. Good luck.

Anyone with an expression that has done this and has issues with it missing a portion of the cut after it turns a 90° corner? If I cut from the cartridge and make a square, it cuts great. Paid for SCAL5 and installed, updated drivers on the expression and got the libcutter installed. Can send a complex drawing and it does it, but misses bits. Can send a simple square from SCAL5 and same issues, misses sections of the cut. I dont get it, why should it not cut from the program when same settings do fine from trh cartridge?

@@nathancanfield9925 Thanks so much i was trouble shooting late last night and i found out that the software i was using SCAL5 was a older version 5.052 i think it was i upgraded to the 5.082 and now cutting perfect. My cricut was also showing v1.34 so i did a update in anycase just incase it was missing something or maybe someone didnt do the update right.... (so either it was the updating of SCAL or Updating of firmware on the machine but its cutting perfect now) Thanks for your reply

No stress give it a try, go to cricut design studio update firmware even if it shows it is the right firmeware just reupdate it in any case and then maybe also tty as i said to get the highest scal5 software with thirdparty plugin. Holding thumbs always great to have another cutter o e for small things and another for larger etc.
