I am almost at a year on carnivore and I still struggle with energy. It comes and goes. You said a lot of helpful things that might be the reason why energy is still a challenge. My big issue has been grief. I started my carnivore journey a few months after my sister died in a tragic motorcycle accident. That would be the stress factor. I had hoped that eating meat would override my grief and how that has affected my body, but it is still in the driver's seat. I'm not giving up. Carnivore is here to stay for my hubby and myself. I just envy those who have found that their energy levels are significantly improved. I'll keep in mind all the things you shared. Thank you. Ruby from Alberta Canada.

We run on both glucose & ketones on carnivore. Bart Kay has mentioned this many a time. Your body makes ketones for the cells that would rather run on ketones than glucose, and our body makes glucose from fat & protein through gluconeogenesis for the cells that would rather run on glucose, which coincidentally causes an insulin bump, not a spike, that helps carnivores retain electrolytes, and prevent kidney damage from longterm deep ketosis. Our body’s need to be efficient at making both ketones & glucose in the exact amounts we need them, which is why we leave it up to our body’s & avoid consuming exogenous (outside) sugar/carbs.
@odious53172 ай бұрын
@@afisanaa Yes, if you’re doing carnivore right you won’t stay in deep ketosis all the time. Carnivore will heal your kidneys if they aren’t too far gone. Eating a large enough amount of fat & protein in one meal it will up-regulate gluconeogenesis which will provide you with the necessary glucose to give an insulin bump. Some rare individuals gluconeogenesis doesn’t work properly, but again that is rare. Your body will need time to adapt though.

I think as far as energy goes some people can be fine just drinking 2 cups of coffee per day but that seems to be managing the problem, not fixing it. The fix seems to be eating enough yes, eating enough fat and maybe as importantly, eating enough protein in one sitting to trigger a bump in insulin. That should solve all potential electrolyte issues, as long as one salts to taste.

I have an autoimmune disorder and am very careful about my cortisol levels, I do gentle exercises 2 x a week and walking every day but not over 30 minutes a day. I still have about 15 pounds to lose to get to my ideal weight but when I am in ketosis I know I need to drink more water to help flush out the toxins and that my sleep gets a bit more difficult during these times.

Exactly 50 days on carnivore and I literally can’t stand for more than 10 minutes. I’m on the couch 90% of my waking hours and nothing I’ve tried has stopped unrelenting muscle tension, heavy pounding heart, breathlessness and zero energy or stamina. A few weeks ago you advised me to increase my salt so I did. I also started taking magnesium and a “no-salt” product for potassium. NOTHING is helping. I started this diet to lose weight and I’m not losing much at all. I lose a couple pounds then gain it right back. As of tomorrow I’m going to start adding back in apples, blueberries and asparagus. I can’t live like this. I haven’t been able to function even on a minimal level for almost 2 months. I want my life and my energy back. Apparently, I’m unable to convert fat into energy. There’s just no reason I should be feeling this inexplicably weak, exhausted, putting up with unrelenting muscle cramps across my entire back and legs, even my trapezius muscles are going into spasms. I’m so depressed and just want to give up on every level after so many weeks on such a strict diet with absolutely no positive results. I can’t figure out why this diet simply does not work for some people or why their bodies are simply unable to adapt to it but I know I’m definitely not the only one. I’m just so tired of suffering so much and feeling so discouraged because I can’t lose any weight and I can’t get my body to respond or see any improvements. From the bottom of my heart I’m sincerely glad for all those who have found the key to happiness and good health on carnivore but I just want the handful of people who are like me to know they are not alone in this insurmountable struggle to lose weight or get stabilized. Some of us just don’t respond well to this diet no matter how many adjustments we make. I wish someone would have told me this weeks ago. It would have been so beneficial to know that not everyone can thrive without any carbs. Not everyone can reach fat adaptation quick enough before bottoming out. My tank has simply run out of fuel and I can’t tolerate one more day of having to lie down on the couch the entire day, feeling so utterly hopeless, discouraged and waiting for at least one good day that is apparently never going to come.

You are severely low in electrolytes and probably need medical attention. How much salt are you taking in addition to salt on food? You may need 3-5 grams (3,000 to 5,000 mg) of sodium per day or more when starting keto or carnivore. In addition you will need potassium and magnesium (mag glycinate is often recommended). Adding back carbs temporarily can be helpful. But, I am deeply concerned that you need to see a doctor ASAP.

Question, hypothetically if you consumed 2 cups of white rice for breakfast and then did a heavy workout I would assume by lunch every one of those carbs would be completely burned off. If for lunch and dinner you only consumed meat and fat are you still in carbohydrate and sugar burning mode even though you burned all those carbs off during the workout and you don't eat any other carbs for the rest of the day?
@estherruth46922 ай бұрын
I don’t think it works that way. I heard a podcast with Tim noakes and Anthony Chaffee where Dr Noakes explains the research he’s doing with exercise and carbs and carnivore. He said unless the carbs are given as you’re working out, they aren’t being burned off. And he said it was only like some honey or something extremely low- not bowls of rice. I’m probably mangling the explanation, but it was a fascinating discussion, definitely worth listening to.

A point to be made on the "Salt Reason"; most people who experiment with removing any adulteration of electrolyte content in their diet (i.e NOT adding sodium to their meal via salt/electrolyte mixes) will claim to feel worse off than when using salt/supplementing other electrolytes. This is due to withdrawal symptoms. Given enough time, their taste would re-condition to its original state (where something like plain meat by itself tasted savoury enough, or eggs even tasting salty by themselves), and they would actually perform and feel better, losing any previous electrolyte ISSUES that were supposed to be from a low-carb diet. Look, ive seen everything about the "low carb diets cause less insulin spikes, therefore not signalling kidneys to retain fluid so you lose water, etc etc etc", which IS true. But the dumping of electrolytes due to this is IN FACT because we MESS UP the RATIO of electrolytes in our body WHEN adding extra salt!!!!! This is prevalent in dry fasters - arguably the most "zero-carb" someone could be; yet electrolyte issues are never an issue (youll find you dont get the 'fatigue due to electrolyte loss' during a dry fast). For example; our sweat is NOT supposed to be salty. Peeing out our electrolytes is NOT due to the "kidneys not retaining fluid anymore", rather it's the body attempting to re-balance its osmotic pressure via dumping excess sodium - which requires other electrolytes to leave with it. Very Very interesting indeed, it is NOT the kidney fluid dumping phenomenon, it is an IMBALANCE of electrolytes. The solution is NOT to re-balance them by addition, but by subtraction. As time goes on, I realize more in more that what is important to the body is NOT an absolute value of something, but rather it's ratio to other 'somethings' (think of electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, minerals, etc). Yes, at a certain point, you CAN become TOO devoid of something, but that is in fact not typically the issue. It is IMBALANCES caused by excess of something else. I digress, reply to me though people... I wanna hear your thoughts. Try it - stop salting your food and give it a couple weeks (to beat the addiction) - you will feel better - i promise.

surely a diet where you have to focus so hard on not feeling bad can't be optimal? You've said people feel like shit if they: undereat/overeat don't hyperfocus on how much salt you eat don't eat enough fat don't have your life philosophy figured out? eat a single carb don't get enough sunlight are stressed then they might feel shit if they're eating a standard carnivore diet, so might have to restrict even further and just eat beef? ok
@chrismoore13722 ай бұрын
Its really just not under eating/enough fat. That's essentially it, and why people fail. It is massively difficult to overeat like this and over time as long as you eat enough things will sort themselves, depending where your starting point may be.

I unfortunately agree. I think carnivore is amazing but sometimes you may need some fruit or honey to help reload a bit
@asdf1991asdf2 ай бұрын
@@chrismoore1372and sometimes using salt can be a massive hindrance to adaptation. Some people need to eliminate salt as it screws electrolytes. This important factor is just starting to become more recognised in carnivore circles.

The formula you mention is 1 gr per 1 pound of LBM, if you use grams instead of pounds for LBM, what would be the formula? 1:1 is easy to remember, but I used the metric system all my life, so we measure everything in grams and kilograms... I guess the ratio will be slightly different if translating to Kg

@@andyc7747 cool, thanks! Now help me out here, given that I don't strictly measure or weight what I eat in a day, I don't find myself eating an entire pound of meat every day, my regular daily food intake is about 250-300 gr of meat, while I always try to keep the 80/20 muscle/fat ratio, and about 6 eggs a day. I also do consume some dairy, like fat cheeses and the like, but not too much, only as a tasty addition when I scramble some eggs and not a significant part of the nutrition. So, am I consuming enough protein and nutrients per day? I can't eat more than 300 gr of meat on a single meal and I don't like eating meat at the evenings, so I don't know how will I manage to get 160 gr of protein per day! My "target" lean body weight should be around the 80 Kg, so that's why I came up with the 160 gr of protein, which I don't think are contained in 300 gr of meat and 6 eggs...
