Laimbeer throws a couple of elbows and cuts Larry's chin. Bird responds by scoring 31 points in the second half of game 2 of the 1985 ECSF. Never a great idea to get Larry fired up. He scored 42 points in total.

If Lebron was on the receiving end of that elbow, they'd had to put him in an ambulance, take to the hospital, declare him dead on arrival and have his funeral the next day, just before he showed up uninjured to the game that very night.

Merkin well said. I am amazed at old NBA players. I saw Lebron take a take a fake charge. There were no fake charges in those days. Today's players, playing under those rules would be hammered by the players of old. Better game back then.

Bird was such a badass. As a Lakers fan, I tip my cap to that guy. I remember Michael Cooper playing him tough, especially in clutch situations. But you double-team him, and he would find the open man. Bird even has said that Coop was one of the toughest defenders he ever faced because he was relentless on D.
@richardpare3538

Cooper was a hell of a defender against Bird. He recognized that when Larry passed the ball, he was just as dangerous, if not even more dangerous, and stuck with him like glue. Those matchups between those two were worth the price of admission alone!

So far none. Dirk had the size and mobility, shooting and offensive moves but he didn’t have Bird’s passing and playmaking. Doncic has the footwork, balance, ball handling, shooting but he’s nowhere near Bird’s size he’s 5 inches shorter. So yeah no Larry Bird so far yet, no Magic Johnson either those two were true generational talents.

As a Bostonian did you know Bird mangled his finger in the 84-85 season just before the playoffs? He was at Chelsea’s bar on Merchant’s Row right off of State St. He was there with his drinking buddy Quinn Buckner when he got into a bar fight with a patron. Analysts looking at Bird’s shooting stats showed he was markedly a poorer shooter than prior to the fight. This means we probably would have won the 84-85 season and further ore that would have been a three-peat. 84,85 and 86. If you lookup this fight it was settled out of court and to this day remains sealed as far as ai know. It may have been O’Shaunessy (spelling) that wrote the article. So somewhere out there is a guy that caused us back to back Championships. Injuring what may have been one of the top three players of all time.

And I'd say these, for instance, have been above 67%: Tim Legler 95% (if he took a 3, it was 95% as likely to go in as if he took a 2) Hubert Davis 94% Bruce Bowen 93% Kyle Korver 93% Steve Novak 93% Pat Garrity 92% Eddie House 92% Steve Kerr 92% Dennis Scott 92% Steve Blake 91% Derek Fisher 91% Raja Bell 90% Ben Gordon 90% Anthony Morrow 90% Chauncey Billups 89% Damon Jones 89% C. Redick 87% Tyronn Lue 86% Anthony Parker 86% Wesley Person 86% Khris Middleton 85% Hedo Turkoglu 85% And when you get down to about here in the list, it's still true that you should take the 3: Larry Bird 74% Kevin Durant 74% Manu Ginobli 74% Dan Majerle 74% James Harden 73% Carmelo Anthony 72% Chris Paul 72%

I watched a lot of basketball until 25 years ago. Bird was one of my favorite players. Todays plalyers are a bunch of crybabys. You didn't see Bird jump up and down, scream and flail his arms everytime he got a basket. He had class which is missing from the game.

Larry Legend. It's amazing that those Celtics "only" won 3 NBA titles. But think about their competition: the early 80s Dr-J Sixers, the late 80s Isaiah Thomas Pistons, the Magic-lead Lakers, and the early 90s Bulls with the greatest ever. The 80s and early 90s was the NBA's golden age.

Bird soared when the NBA became a full fledged major professional sports league. Three titles for his team is an astounding feat. And he could rebound. I joined the fan club when I noticed ed his skill at defensive rebounding. He ended offensive possessions for the opposition. And then he might pop a three pointer at the other end after dribbling the ball upper. He's one of the greatest athletes all time among all English-speaking. Said another way he's among a large number of American athletes without a peer in any athletic part-time among the English, Irish or Scottish.

No one dominated a game more than Larry Bird did during his prime years. Certain players might equal him, but no one surpassed him. Many today tend to forget how dominant Bird was in his hey day because he never tried (not tries now) to promote himself. Very laid back guy.

Laimbeer was such a dirty player that he would actually try & hurt people. Not tough just dirty. And dumb. To piss off a player like Bird who already plays angry pretty much every game is about as stupid of a move as you can make.

I don't think I'll ever understand Bird. Aside from him being 6'9", he honestly looks like a guy who they got out of the stands and gave a uniform that didn't even quite fit him right. He doesn't speak like a basketball expert or savant or anything like that, and his moves all seem to be purely improvised instead of honed weapons...but yet he just KILLED everyone, swished shot after shot, threw incredible passes, scored from every angle, and was clutch as all hell. Which makes him unforgettable.

Larry Bird was a master at the game and was everything you wanted in a basketball player. Whatever you needed, he had it or produced it. Dunks, 3's, free throws, layups, assists, off balance shots, steals, rebounds, quick passes, fast breaks, last second shots for the win, you name it and he could give it to you.
