Many of us wonder why we keep getting sick and repeatedly suffer from recurrent infections-whether it be sinus infections, ear infections, urinary tract infections, cold and flu, or a range of other infections. While conventional medicine typically treats these infections with antibiotics, Functional Medicine digs deeper to determine the cause of the infection and what can be done to eliminate it.⁣

In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to breaking the cycle of recurrent infections and how to make ourselves more immune resilient. ⁣

Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well. ⁣

Tip for interruptions- I have this issue too. It’s a sign of extremely intelligent person. My advice because I get that negative feedback too. Try to take a note pad with you. When you are active listening to your guest and get an insight, just jot it down. Also tell your guests that that when you have insight, I will touch my nose. This will enable your guest to finish the story and allow awesome interjection from you. Advice the guest to do the same. Use a mind map when you are on a topic. Draw a tree with branches of ideas. If you have this in place you will get less excited and anxious to interrupt. You will see the scope of the conversation and be calmer. No coffee before a talk it is a bad choice for super intelligent anxious speakers. Love ❤️ n hugs 🤗

I have had anxiety for about 16 years. It's so debilitating due to the overwhelming, out-of-control feelings of going crazy. I have always had sinus and allergies, every since childhood. My question is: Are the dizzy spells that I'm having, and balance problems as a result of chronic ear, nose, and throat infections? I also have hypothyroidism, where my hair comes out at times by the gobs. I have tried Keto, taken different supplements, vitamins, foods, and even recreation, but I still have a ton of problems. The same way I was thinking. My deficiencies haven't been addressed. I decided to ask my Doctor for an antibiotic.

@@Emily00Strange If there's a push for building up our immune system and taking care of ourselves from inside then Big Pharma and the medical establishment will run out of business; their industry will collapse. You see? The joke is on us. It is time we put an end to their nonsense. Yes subsidies to the farmers. Medical doctors are drug pushers and the PharmaCysts are drug dispensers, they are not there for our wellbeing but to make money. They are a business.. All these should end.

If you're open minded watch dr. Jennifer Daniel's videos on the use of turpentine and sugar. It gave me back my life after spending thousands with my conventional doctor who said I was fine even though I was so weak and sick I could barely function. Also look into grapefruit seed extract. I take one 250mg capsule 3x a day for Candida and it works great. If you not willing to try the turpentine at least do a good parasites cleanse. I hear para 1&2 is good but for me turpentine is the best.

There are many more of us developing these conditions after multiple COVID infections. Hopefully better research will help develop solutions. Somehow the epithelial immune system in the nose and ears gets overactivated from viral damage and can't recover homeostasis. ENTs are stone age when it comes to treating this stuff, all they have are saline steroid rinses. We need way more money funding sophisticated research into this problem as it has a huge impact of quality of life.

Mark... Um.. not sure.. I had the same... multiple ear infections and lots of antibiotics as a child. Now after COVID I am borderline CFS with defective T-cells. But I wonder really is it due to mucous in the passages? Mucous is actually antimicrobial. I am thinking it is more due to a genetic component that makes the T-cells ineffective to certain viruses that is the problem. And once you have viral susceptibility, of course bacterial secondary infections follow. The solution is to fix the T-cells. And that is likely ONLY achievable through taking them out and fixing them (T-cell therapy). This is Occam's razor.. simplest explanation. Viruses such as herpesvirus and coronavirus genetically modify our cells, and for some reason some of us get damaged immune response from it. The likely only simple therapies that may provide some help are fasting (when not sick, to get rid of the epigenetic modifications) and if there are nutrients or drugs that can correct dysfunctional T-cells (so far we don't know of any, although some people think glutathione or other antioxidants may be helpful.. possibly to some extent, but it seems like time, rest and lack of immune challenge are the only things that help some people, but as soon as a new infection comes along they are knocked back down again.. and this repeats until many people have full-blown dysfunction that can take decades to reverse or may not reverse at all without intervention. Bruce Patterson has also had some success with Maraviroc and statins, but this is not working for everyone every time, likely because it can only help get rid of activated cells and doesn't fix or create properly working new ones).
