My exact thought, my trip to Yellowstone was strangely the last time it was closed... the Forrest fires in 88. As the combination unit I was assigned for it was walking out to cut fire breaks in grass as tall as us and higher, a couple of said "OH look at the moose that aren't that big" my response was what do you think they are walking in cut grass. Moose, bison and bears are huge and we ain't squat to be ran down, over or eaten by a bear.

@@ronfox5519 i grew up around black bears & I get along with them fine. (By being considerate of course!) & I am not going to walk up to a bison or give him any reason to think I might. Bc people think bears are scary & "buffalo" cute, I thought I'd mention that a bison is far more likely to get sick of company, & far more suddenly. And both can outrun us no problem. & That's the difference. A black bear might just chase someone away to get peace. A bison wanting peace chases them to teach them a physical lesson. They would rather avoid us. The bear is more invested in running off unless cornered and the bison is going to run towards every time. The ones near the road are the enforcers between the tourons & the herd. They're there to toss those who cross a line. It's their job in the buffalo tribe. They're like mama bears if you go near a cub. Calves same deal. But the mama bear is scaring you off. The bison wants you broken so you can't run after a calf. They've been hunted more, are seen as the meat dept still by many. & They know that. I know what I'd do. I think they excel at patience, frankly.

In June 2019, I had a hilarious encounter with a female moose on the Dempster Highway in Yukon Canada. It stood in the middle of the road and blocked me from driving any further. Got out of the car with my Nikon camera, shot a few pix. Then talked to it. I said you'll have to mooooose out of the way. It must have heard me. It walked away into the bush. I cracked up laughing. As I drove by, I tried to find it but couldn't. I thanked it for moooosing out of my way and continued my adventure. @yegfreethinker

Exactly why it's good to keep a generous distance because like a good mother she will do whatever can and does feel necessary to protect her babies so don't mess around because I'm sure you wouldn't like it if someone were getting why too close for comfort. But you know what it isn't a bad thing to keep your distance and by making your intention crystal clear that you mean no harm you can see a reduction in body movement that indicates stress or almost like calm that isn't experienced when the animal flight or fight is triggered. You can say it's my imagination but I think finish with you if it's only these animals when you observe the best practices for observing these animals almost a Zen like feeling of mutual respect from some of the animals that you are not getting up in their face and giving them room to be as they were meant to be. If wanna see it action out a videos for cars yielding for like a mama bear morning her cubs across a highway---needless to say like any mother dealing with very young children sometimes they can get out of control and they kept going back across to the other side of the highway where they came from I can't have any problem nevertheless people were patient with her and she eventually got her newborns across the highway---when she finally finishes you can kind of see she's happy that motorists kept their distance when they follow the rules and she gave them what I'd call an expression of a relieved- gratitude and then keeps going on about the day. Leave the wild to be Wild. By all means enjoy nature but don't think mother nature is your plaything. Respect -- most important thing in so many seemingly unrelated activities....
