One key reason why you need a PS3 - legacy content. The Sony of today is not the Sony we had back when the PS3 or even when the PS2 came out. Back then, they always went into the next console generation with backward compatibility as a priority. The PS2 supported all the games and even the same accessories as the PS1. The original PS3s supported PS1 and PS2 games. Later models were only backwards compatible with PS1 games, though you could still purchase PS2 Classics releases via the PlayStation Store. Alternatively, a non-backwards compatible PS3 can be jail-broken to play PS2 ISO backups. The PSP had its own library of UMD games, but most if not all PSone Classics purchased on the PS3 could be redownloaded on PSP. The Vita didn't support UMDs, but most digital PSP and PS1 content previously purchased on PSP or PS3 could be redownloaded on Vita. Then we get to PS4. No backwards compatibility at all. The only way to get legacy content on the PS4 is if there is a re-release. Likewise, PS5 is only backward compatible with PS5 games. Even if they released a firmware update that allowed the PS3/PSP/Vita purchasable and playable on PS5, we'd still need a hardware revision to support physical backward compatibility. Because neither the PS4 or PS5 have CD lasers. So if you have an enormous back library of games from anything predating the PS4, this is the simplest setup. PlayStation 3 (either a backward compatible model or jailbroken model) for PS1, PS2 and PS3 games; a PlayStation 5 for PS4 and PS5 games; and either a jailbroken Vita or PlayStation TV for PSP and Vita content.

A few corrections: 1. It's the Cell Broadband Engine. Comprised of 1 Power Processing Element (PPE) and 8 Synergistic Processing Elements (SPE), the equivalent of a 9 core CPU. The SPE's run independently of eachother as separate processors and are all governed by the PPE (essentially the PPE was like traffic control, nothing could happen without it but it allowed the SPE's to work as independent CPU's all working on a separate part of the task). What truly makes it unique, and incredibly powerful if programmed correctly, is the structure of the SPE's. Of the 8, 1 is reserved for the operating system and 1 is dormant. The dormant processor becomes active should one of the other 6 available SPE's become damaged, basically a one-time failsafe that can massively extend the life of the Cell. Which means if you have the tools, and knowledge, you could activate this dormant processor and have the full capacity of the entire Cell. In comparison the X-Box 360, though still using a unique CPU, was only a 3 core system. The only downside to the Cell Broadband Engine is that it can be incredibly difficult to build a program to fully utilise the potential of the system. The upside is that it's built on Linux and, as such, can be reprogrammed and set up to function as a supercomputer when run is series and parallel with additional consoles. (Again, knowledge is needed for this but the potential is there!) This truly is a unique CPU with incredible potential, sad that they decide to go with a basic Quad core for the PS4. A Cell Broadband Engine with the RAM of the PS4 would be mental!! Side note: Both AMD and Intel have a similar setup with their multi-core CPU's regarding dormant processors. Whether it's the quad, sextuple or octuple core, it's the same print. Just the quad has 4 cores deactivated, the sextuple has 2 cores deactivated and the octuple is the full system. Again you can, with tools and knowledge, make the quad identical to the octuple by reactivating the 4 dormant cores. This is based on profit margins, it's cheaper to make make 9,999,999 of the same processor with a single machine/design then divide the total into 3 piles and deactivate 4 cores on one third, 2 cores on one third and then leave the remaining third as designed. 2. The PS3 has 512MB RAM, same as X-Box 360. Just that Sony has the good grace to tell you that 256MB is reserved for the operating system so there is only 256MB available for programs. It was a cheap tactic by Microsoft to make their Shitbrick seem better. It still reserved RAM for the operating system but, just like with a PC, they don't tell you that. Sony were honest. Bonus: The acceptable failure rate for the PS3 was 0.5% or 1 in 200 consoles, it never came close to that. It was maybe 0.1 - 0.05%. As we all know, and is the reason to never by an X-Box (and on an additional side note, for other reasons but still regarding shoddy construction and reliability, to never give money to Apple) the failure rate of the 360 was about 30%. Also, their insistence on HD-DVD instead of Blu-Ray meant that the larger games came on 2 discs to the PS3's single disc and you had to fork out for an external adapter to actually use the high density discs. Sony wins again! Basically the only downside to the PS3 is that it's incredibly unique CPU made it very difficult for programmers to build the games to work properly with the system. That being said, The Cell Broadband Engine did, and still does, have massive potential! I would love to see a PC running from a couple of those!!

The PS3 actually launched with the Sixaxis controller, which is basically the same as the DualShock 3 but without rumble motors. I would also mention that PS2 backwards compatibility was removed before the slim came out - it is only present in the launch 20 and 60 gb models, and to a slightly lesser extent the 80gb model. (There might be another model in some region I forgot about, but those are the only 3 in the US at least). You can tell if a PS3 is backwards compatible if it has 4 USB ports in the front, the card reader slots are present, and the silver part is chrome instead of matte. Keep in mind these models are also a lot more expensive and sought after than the others. Great video! I just thought these things would be good to mention

The PS3 Slim is still PS2 compatible. However only software side. The FAT PS3 (in Japan) still had PS1 and PS2 hardware on board. Sadly the european FAT PS3 already was downsized to PS1 Hardware compatibility only and PS2 was already software emulated. And that Card reader was also removed.

@Adam Thiry Of course. I didn't say OFFICIAL Firmware. The software side PS1 and PS2 capability still comes with every PS3 slim. It just only works officially with PS1 and PS2 games bought from the PSN store. However i use a CFW on mine so the hidden potential is now unlocked.

My first PS3 was 80gb backwards compatible, 4 USB ports on front as well as Microsd slots under the black hood. It eventually just stopped working, was a sad come home from work moment realize game night is fucked. I eventually got another 80gb only 2usb ports, backwards compatible, no microsd slots. It still works as far as I know but its been a while. It was/is a great game console. Super computer multi media beauty.

Great video, but lots of errors too. The launch PS3's has four USB ports, not HDMI ports. The 20gb model did in fact come with an HDMI port. There was no original 40gb model, just a 20gb and 60gb. (The 40gb model came later) Some PS3's eventually shipped with up to 160gb hard drives, not just 80gb. The console first shipped with the Sixaxis controller, not the Dual Shock 3. Just some minor corrections.

I recently got a PS3, recently fell in love with Little Big planet series the Resistance series and the Infamous series. The main reason i did not get it early was the price, and the feel of the triggers on the ps3 felt like they would break very easily. Why I bought them in 2021? First of all, I am a Gaming Consoles collector. Second, when I grew up, I never had a chance to own a Playstation, because my parent (I don't blame them) wouldn't buy for me. Their reason is, video games could affect my grade in education. @@Anytbing_lol That´s just partially true. Yes, the cell architecture is very hard to emulate, but it can be done. RPCS3 was reverse engineerd by enthusiasts. Sony knows every little detail about the cell processor, so an emulator would be no big problem for them to solve. Just remember, that xbox one gave us xbox360 (RISC) backwards compatibility with a really weak x86 AMD Jaguar cpu.

One update on the YLOD issue. These days you can diagnose the errors and fit the backwards compatible PS3 model with a 40nm GPU and add 2 extra caps to make it YLOD-proof. That way you can have a long-lasting ps3 which can play ps1 and ps2 games. This way PS3 and PS5 are all you need to play 90% of all games that came out on all playstations over the years.

The call of duties are awesome on the PS3. Still play and there’s tons of players daily. Ghost, bo1 and bo2 has tons of players every single day no matter what hour.

i like call of duty world at war, it has around 290 players most evening's but that call of duty ghosts is very active and the last time i was on it said 1072 players online. i also play rainbow 6 vegas 2 as that one is quite active in the evening's for terriost hunt and team deathmatch. i got dragon age origins with the awakening extra game, i can't seem to connect to servers to get extra downloadable content, trouble is on ps3 alot of server's have been shut down but there's still plenty of games to try multiplayer yeah 👍

I still use my Original 60gb release PS3 everyday bought it at a classic game store for about $300 came with the Original box original papers and some of the chords were still in the OG packaging and came with the sixaxis controller. Was super happy when I booted it up it has 300 gb of space because they changed the internal HD and they did such a nice job because it still has the sticker over the HD slot and it doesn't even look like they even swapped it also has no scratches. I'm thinking they also added thermal paste cause it's very quite and runs and boots better then my PS4 Pro. Got more then a few PS2 games for it and like 7 PS3 titles for it

Upgraded my surround sound system and dug out my PS3 for BD and Netflix. Updated it connected it to my home network via lan cable for access to my laptops external hdd with all my movies and tv shows. The surround system sounds amazing with the ps3. Just wish it could handle 4k. I can't believe how long I've owned it and still works perfectly.

Unfortunately for me the company had a clause in their T&Cs regarding pricing. But to compensate me for their mistake they sold it to me at cost. R3500 which was about $259.

The PS3 is still a great gaming and media player. Alot of under appreciated exclusives. The ram bottleneck sucks, but still, many games look as good as alot on PS4. And the XMB interface on the PS3 and PSP is far more intuitive than any other console and allows for some advanced media playing tweaking options to make even DVDs look great. PS4 user interface is horrible.

I still have my ps 3 and it is still the console in which i have the most games, although i have a ps4. The reason is because of the games!!! Dead space, Fall Out New Vegas, Aliens Vs Predator, Dragon Age, etc... Most games were better on PS3. Today, too much effort is made in the graphic area while making not much sense on every other aspect. Bad scenarios, bad speach choices, bad story (heck, sometimes, you wander if there is actually one!...), i have no idea why this is happening but it is very bad. It seems now, in order to have a full game, you must buy DLCs.... fuck that.

I still use PS3, my main complaint is the controllers are prone to breaking. you can buy an adapter to use newer controllers but won't be able to use the progressive triggers required in games like MGS3 & Life is Strange

Ps3 is LEGENDARY!!!! I still have mine and will NEVER give it up....it sits next to my ps1....2....4....as well as my other "oldschool" consoles....watching blu-ray movies was not only awesome at that time but WAY ahead of its time! However I have always believed that devs only give us just enough to make us keep buying consoles....25+ years ago I played pc games that looked as good as the ps5 today!!!! So I knew that graphics could've been so much better on these consoles along time ago....but companies like Sony and Microsoft only take it up a notch or two at a time so they can keep making money and keep coming out with consoles....trust me if they were to give us their best we wouldn't know the difference between "actual"real life people or created ones lol 👍✌

I live in Taiwan, and a friend who moved back west just gave me his PS3 and a great stack of games. PS3 games are dirt cheap right now. I was able to pick up most of the AAA games for under $10 each, some for as little as $5 each, especially Japanese versions since Taiwanese don't speak/read Japanese (I can). Also good for me is that Asian region games all maintain English audio and have a choice between English or Chinese text. This is the version most Taiwanese play, and while they're a bit more expensive than Japanese games, they're still usually under $15 each.

I have a slim version I got back in 2012. I'm glad I didn't go for the ultra slim. The slim is definitely the best version aesthetically. These days I mostly use it to play PS1 games so that I can preserve my original PS1 in the condition it's in. I need to work on it to restore it to it's former glory a bit more and using it to play would not help with that. That's why I love to have the PS3 on hand. If I break it, they are dirt cheap to rebuy so I can always get a second one to preserve for the future and use the one I have. But if I damaged my original PS1 I would probably cry, too many memories, even getting another one for a fair price wouldn't cut it as I have a lot of memories with the one I have.

As I mentioned on the ps2 video, I still have my ps2 and ps3. I love playing them both and haven't bothered upgrading to the ps4 or 5. The only problem I have with it is when the memory gets a bit full and I have to delete some of the previous saves, which is fine because I get to start from scratch again. And getting original ps3 controllers can be a hassle when they start to play up as they don't repair them anymore. I have to find second hand ones on ebay or marketplace which can be a bit hit and miss when you get them.

indeed it is great and it's easy to see now why initially it was so expensive. Bluray and full online connectivity was so new and the processor was light years ahead of PS2 capability. Sony stumbled but got back up with the slim model which is the one I really recommend for daily use. it eliminated any console bugs the build is solid and it runs smooth :)

this was a nice review. it's been awhile apologies for being absent. interesting to learn these things about the PS3 and that there are the comments which expand upon such knowledge. I won't be going backwards except for my original Xbox at some point someone told me some mod points about it that I'd like to experiment in. however I will say you most definitely need to do Xbox Series X vs PS5 review now that they're actually out cause I've taken a look at your pre-review before they released lots of info has to change there chief lol! SeriesX wins in backwards compatibility while PS5 stops at just ps4 games so lacking. I say SeriesX cause maybe you've seen this but Xbox, which shocked me I've been Xbox since 2004 1st system; went with PS5 this gen, but recently got a SeriesX for experimenting purposes, they've expanded backwards all the way to original Xbox games 360 games, One games. for original and 360 a few games are out of the running to be played on SeriesX. As far as graphics, since I do have a fine eye, I myself thought PS5 would take it, but I do see a crisper difference w/SeriesX. I think the 120fps that they definitely advertise on the box stands true. how they implemented their GPU is interesting. personally I don't care much as long as it looks beautiful both systems do but if we're talking about who has the edge, I'm seeing it in SeriesX. Storage (you may know all of this as well) is another thing SeriesX wins out on cause say the SSD goes bad, well at least it's swappable vs the soldered on SSD on PS5 plus you get a full 1TB which does make a difference vs 825gb (really 667gb after OS install). so one's alot more recoverable from a doom situation than the other, and has more internal. Processing: this is where the PS5 does win. the pro to having that SSD soldered onto main board w/CPU=different channeling system the games run smoother, there's a full personal connection if you will with the inner doodads that are on main board than just simple PCIe slot connection(?). there's a noticeable difference in fluidity w/games even PS4 games on 5. also they've got a better controller feels more next gen. just comparing Apples and Oranges, I don't pick sides. I can't as I've been Xbox most of my life and as you've been told which is the truth I've owned PS systems only recently 1st PS4 next PS5 (still regret selling PS4 that was a mistake, the Xbox One was a horrendous installment, 360 much better). but just saying if I should be picking sides it should be w/Xbox, but I don't as I see all of them having their caveats.

I Had To Buy a New Blu-Ray Drive for It; after I Opened It Up and Cleaned Everything (Must Have Cleaned a Little Bit Too Thorough?). Even Putting On Some New Arctic MX-4 Thermal Paste On The CPU and GPU. I Played *Infamous,* *Modern Warfare 2,* and *Motorstorm Apocalypse* On It For Months 😇😂 I Even Bought BluRay Versions of *Bad Boys* and *I Am Legend* Just To Watch It On My *New* Refurbished Game Console. I was so grateful that they came out with the super slim I didn't want a PS3 until they came out with that version it runs a lot better and faster than the slim and the original and you never have to worry about your game getting stuck inside. Also there was a limited amount of the original PS3 that were backwards compatible.

I have Super Slim, but honestly...I missed the train on the 60GB model that is backwards compatible with PS2. Granted ALL PS3's can play classic PSone titles (yes, my super slim is my go to for PSone streaming on my twitch channel), but I would love to do PS2 on the PS3. The HDMI cable I got for my PS2 gets the job done, but ugh is it grainy. Overall, a PS3 is a fantastic addition to anyone's collection. Especially when you realize that there are a TON of exclusives that look to be forever locked to that unit.

I'm suprised you liked Hawks. Not too many people play combat flight sims. If you want the best, check out Ace Combat. I've been playing it since the PS2. AC Assault Horizon is the one on the PS3 I believe. Check it out. Btw I still have my mine and play GTA V almost everyday.
