Amen to that. When our twin toddlers were born 3 years ago, I decided they should be bilingual. And to make it happen, I only speak to them in English day and night while their mother speaks Portuguese with them. And soon enough, they already can speak English and Portuguese -- two languages -- at such a young age. And guess what, we're raising them in Mozambique where they're exposed to many other local languages.

We do the same for our children. We speak English and French, plus orher different local languages.

Sir, I homeschool 4 young children. You are spot on. Great advice. I get so caught up in thinking I’m not good enough to teach them xyz and I put off teaching them so much more. I need to get over it and take more action. 1) I will have my 3 year old reading kindergarten books by the end of this summer. 2) My 4 year old will be able to read picture books and write the alphabet by Christmas. 3) My 7 year old is a very advanced reader and I will start her on a second language today. 4) My 9 year old will strengthen spelling skills and we will master long division by Christmas. I so want them to have and be everything they can be. I will lovingly guide them to reach their potential. We start today. I CAN teach them all these things.

Good for you! But what if they aren’t ready to achieve each of those goals by the deadlines you’ve set? Your goals should be about allotting time to helping your kids. They will reach their own milestones in their own time. By deqdlining their milestones, you’re creating a scenario where, if they fall behind, they will feel pressured to catch up, and that pressure will hinder the learning process.

@@zakgreenberg1615 these timed goals are for myself. If they don’t reach them by the time, I will readjust my method and keep pushing. Of course they grow as they are ready. But I’m not using my own insecurities as an excuse to procrastinate or limit their abilities. They may also surpass these goals well before the time limit. The point is, I need to stop limiting them.

@@zakgreenberg1615 I should clarify, these timed goals are for me as their teacher. The point is I won’t let my insecurities impede their pace. They may achieve much more than I hoped in this time limit too. I wasn’t throwing a gauntlet down saying they must reach these goals, or else. Far from it. They are ready and hungry to learn. I need to rise to the occasion. That’s all!

If you're interested in fantastic, free language courses check, Language Transfer. The courses are basically recordings of a teacher and a student. If you go through a course first by yourself WITHOUT looking at the transcript AND thinking about the questions yourself, you'll learn the language, too. You can then later check out the transcript and assume the role of the teacher and follow the transcript and have your kid assume the role of the student. Remember, though, that kids have their own interests and timeline. If they don't feel like it, it won't do much good to force them. But Language Transfer's method is very active and will likely engage their curiosity. You can find Complete Spanish and other courses on KZbin.

Having a vision for them is so necessary. Children will usually rise to the occasion when you have higher expectations for them. Proven in studies too. Naturally, they should be reasonable and attainable with a clear idea on how to reach the goals. I had goals for my children to ride bikes without training wheels by age 4. So far both of my eldest two achieved that goal 2-4 weeks before their 4th birthdays and never used training wheels. We started with a very lightweight balance bike, Strider Pro 12-in (6.5lbs) around 12-18 months old. Once they were balancing/gliding confidently at faster speeds and able to handle turns/steering, I started researching best beginner bikes and was guided to look for a lightweight pedal bike WITHOUT coaster brakes. Children will naturally back pedal a tiny bit when learning to fist pedal and balance at the same time, so coaster brakes will hinder them and cause frustration. You want hand breaks instead. My 2yo knows that if he wants to watch a show on tv, he needs to go over his letter sounds first. It’s easy… we have foam letters which he brings to me, we go over the sounds, I mix them up and have him locate each one by the sound it makes, done ✅. He knows half his letters already in a month of doing it this way and there is zero stress for either of us! I am so grateful for this channel giving me the idea.

When did you start this? My son is 21 months old, so not quite 2 yet. He has trouble saying words and sounds but understands a lot. I want to be proactive with this stuff but haven’t because of his age, naturally. He’s at the age where I need to start implementing some of these strategies but I don’t want to expect more than is reasonable. I just know there’s a big difference between a toddler that’s 1y9m and 2y9m.

@@djkb125 oh yeah my son is turning 3 next month. And, he was showing signs of readiness i.e., good expressive and receptive language skills, the ability to focus and the desire to learn. With his older brother it was different, the focus wasn’t there and I didn’t push reading skills much at all. (I hadn’t discovered this channel yet.) When he was nearly 5, my mom who is a former teacher bribed him with lego sets until he could read basic stuff. He picked up the rest from video games 😅. He’s reading well above his grade level now. Maybe part of the reason my younger boy is so cooperative is that he sees his brother has to do some things also before he turns on the tv-read a book, do some math drills, exercise, etc. This is all to say, I think the main thing is to keep it fun for your kid and don’t worry about missing a window of time with learning-what might take them a year at 2 can take only a month at 4 or 5. If you are an attentive and loving parent, your child will do fine.

Thanks so much for the video, It was definitely an eye opener. I want my son to be so many things, but I wasn't putting any work towards it because of my own fears. Imma try the five minute a day thing every morning and see if this works. I've been trying random times throughout our day with just the letters A-D and I haven't gotten him to understand it yet. I don't know whether i'm doing things right with my 2yo daughter. I'm a solo parent and I work full time from home, and I only have part-time childcare, so it's a massive struggle. I suffer terribly from mum guilt. My daughter is very smart, and I feel like if I take my foot off the gas for even a moment with her education, i'm letting her down. hi! i have a 19months old boy and he started to speak his single few words and animal sounds… i introduced the alphabet before he turned 1 but he does not seem to be interested in it …tried phonics too …recently i just started to focus first on the vowels but doesn’t show much interest too… but he have the initiative to get his small books with shapes colors and numbers and would want me to read it for him… any advice what i should start teaching him at his age?? how to start? how i can make him interested with the letters.. i have the cloth letters with pics at the back… thank you so much for you! and i appreciate your teaching strategies and for sharing it with us!

It's way too early. When a child can't say a sentence yet, it's no good trying to teach them to read. It's much better to have picture books and occasional sounds - a literacy rich environment where he's drawn to literature. It's too early to start systematic grapheme-phoneme teaching. The child should be at least ~3-4 years old before you start doing so. If you start too early, the kid may not be at a developmentally appropriate stage and it's simply impossible for them to learn the skill right then abd at worst may discourage the child from learning to read. Make books & letters visible in the environment so that he can get curious about them by himself. When you notice him engaging with letters or books or so by his own initiative, that's a cue that you can try systematically teaching basic decoding skills.
