Thirty odd years ago I had a job interview in a city centre office and when I left, the older gentleman that conducted my interview commented on my necklace and said just to tuck it under the neckline of my top so it wasn’t visible as there had recently been some “unscrupulous characters loitering close by ”. I remarked it wasn’t real gold just costume but as he said, the robbers wouldn’t know that and he didn’t want me getting hurt just for a necklace. He would probably be amazed at how much luxury is flaunted on the streets these days! (Yes, I got the job and yes, he was a genuinely lovely man.)

If someone is following you make sure to stay in a crowded area then turn around and shout so everyone can hear “stop following me” or “I don’t know you why are you following me”. Take the anonymity away from the stalker and draws people’s attention to them. Also another tip is to pretend someone has called you and then say “hey, I’m almost there, oh you can see me? He parked his belongings in a safer place but he was followed by thieves who broke his car. The reactions and quotes to his tweet were harsh : it was his fault and he should not have purchased a bag in a context of a crisis. What I conclude is people have no fear stealing anyone, rich or not. A teenager killed Pop Smoke for a Rolex watch. An influencer just got robbed in Paris, just like Kim Kardashian in 2015. Another not-so famous influencer in the North of France got robbed while she was away in vacations. People have no desire (or dont see the point) of working and try to get rich the easiest possible. And if they have to harm somebody for it, they would do it

Sophie everything you said we are always telling our young daughter. Wait until your garage door is close again before walking in to get what you forgot. I am glad you are safe and you followed your gut!

I used to commute by train in downtown Los Angeles for several years. These are some of the habits I developed and still do when on public transit: I only carry bags that zipper closed. No open tote bags, preferably cross body bags worn close to the body. I would turn my wedding ring to hide my diamonds. When I board the train I look at everyone in the car and make note of every person who exits and enters the train. Never get distracted staring at your phone! I really wish more luxury influencers would talk about this! Thank you for this video 👏🏻👏🏻 My parents house was burgled when I was younger, I didn’t own any luxury items back then but the burglars took all the few valuables I owned (I was gone for ONE hour so was clearly watched). The violation made me feel so sick! Fast forward a few years and I can now afford a few luxury items. I have been following luxury influencers for years to help me narrow down what I wanted to spend my money on but I’ve always wondered why no one ever mentions the risks of owning & wearing such items, especially the ones with big logos, out and about as it is something that has always worried me!! I think being very aware of the area you’re in, always holding your bag/have bag in front of you in public transports, possibly hiding the bag with a coat/scarf/tote bag and flip the bag so that the potential logo is hidden is the minimum we can do… It is so sad that we can’t just enjoy our beautiful items with peace of mind in public.

Years ago my now husband bought me this beautiful Dior tote for my 21st birthday. A couple of weeks later as I was walking home I rounded the corner and my home was a few metres away. This car drove down the road and this man jumped out and pinned me to the wall and said very calmly that I needed to give him my bag, it all felt really surreal I couldn’t understand what he was saying and the only thought I had was I’m not giving him MY bag. Another car drove down and it kind of brought me back to reality so I started screaming, this shocked him soo he let me go and I went screaming and running to my home. Everyone in my house came out, my brothers came out one came out with a wrench but they couldn’t see the guy on our road he’d disappeared. I was due to leave the country the next day so after speaking to the police they said they’d get back in touch. It turned out these men had assaulted a man on the road next to mine and then driven down my road and found me. It wasn’t me who shocked the mugger into letting me go, another man had rounded the corner. The mugger had them dragged him into the next road and stabbed him. After finding that out the muggers calm tone when talking to me made sense, he wasn’t aggressive as he had a knife. It took me months to be able to walk home alone, I had to be escorted to the station and from the station. Now I only buy bags I can wear as cross bodies and I hardly take anything nice out in London, I save my bags for holidays to the Middle East or Singapore. I genuinely can’t wait to move out of London and I was born and bred here.

Thank you for this safety reminder. I personally don't purchase anything flashy or with logos because I prefer a more understated look, but even then I sometimes get scared if I'm wearing an expensive piece (jewelry, bag, coat, etc.). As someone who commutes on public transportation, I know that feeling of being watched/followed and fearing that you're unintentionally drawing attention because of your appearance. As many of the commenters have recommended, carrying something that can be used as a weapon and running shoes are excellent ideas. I once took my nicest bag at the time (under $1000USD) to a vacation with my best friend and she stole it from me! After parting ways, I had to track her down at an airport for it. I learned many things here, but one was how pervasive jealousy is and that it doesn't matter how much or little you have, no one is immune to it. I have friends with similar stories of having a coat or bag stolen during a night out with friends. :( These days, I focus more on developing my confidence with non-material things and having fun, rather than worrying about what I look like. I still wear my nice things! But not all once, nothing with obvious logos, and I always remember to read the room. If I stick out like a sore thumb, chances are I'm overdressed and at this point, I'm not even enjoying my things because I'm just scared for my life. It isn't fair, of course, but that's been my experience.

As I'm pumping gas into the car, I hear someone yelling and I look up to see my bag being lifted out from the back seat and a guy run and jump into a car and they drove off. I got in my car and tried to chase them down, which looking back was beyond stupid, and they got away. Now when I go to the gas station, my windows are rolled all the way up and my doors are locked. Lesson learned :)

When on holiday I take a coach Cassie bag for when I’m exploring a new city. I only take a luxury clutch or mini purse for activities when I know we’re going straight from the car to the location and not walking around. Growing up in Chicago I know how easily it is to get robbed. If your new to a place and need directions always try asking an employee in a shop and not a local on a street. Also for transit always avoid empty train carts.

Yes, great tip! I do this too. No Chanel if I'm not driving door-to-door from home to restaurant/bar. Walking in any downtown with a designer bag at night for too long is just inviting trouble.

When I took a cab from the airport CDG to Paris, the cab driver told me to hide my bag because he had 3 females passengers mugged by a moped gang, he now carries a big metal stick. The moped gangs target taxis from airports.. that is really scary specially when you are stuck in traffic. I too, will stop to put my purse in the trunk then then park my car a few blocks away. I always walk in a brisk pace in the middle of the sidewalk because you can either get pulled in if you close to the buildings or by the same token to a car if you too close to the road... I remember once I was walking and noticed a parked van which seemed out of place, it was a deserted street and turned around ... don’t know why.... always good to trust your instinct

Be aware o your surroundings at all times. Put the phone away, ear buds. Look under your car. When your driving if they hit your car don’t get out. They want to rob you. In the US we’re having a problem with this. When they hit you on purpose tell you you hit them and ask for money upfront. There’s a video on KZbin where the guy refuses to pay them because normally you have insurance that will pay. He breaks his windshield. Little kids in the back seat

Thank you Sophie. I have a tip that when you enter your garage, keep your car in the reverse gear as it activates the camera and the warning buzzer, so that you can see anyone sneaking in. Once the garage door is down, then put your car in park. Also, always lock your car the moment you enter it and keep your handbag on the floor and not on the seat.

I agree - lock the car the moment you get in. Some cars lock automatically once you put it in drive. Do not wait for that. Also, some cars have automatic locks where every door opens once you open the driver's door - deactivate that.

On the rare occasions I go to a shopping mall (esp. these days), if I want to drop off packages in my car and continue shopping, I will always move the car to another area of the parking lot, usually on the opposite side of the mall. As someone who works in the insurance industry, when a property is burgled, these days all they want is cash, jewellery and watches as anything else is much easier to trace. Thieves will walk down a road and test every single property, if they get they search the master, the study (if you have one) and the kitchen. The most heartbreaking thing I see is people not insuring their treasured possessions for enough or correctly.

If I plan on leaving my purse in the trunk for a quick stop after work, I usually put my purse in the trunk before I go to the destination. I just never know who is watching after I've parked at the destination. Also, don't leave anything that remotely looks like a bag. One of my friends left her lunchbox on the passenger seat. Someone broke in to basically steal her lunchbox. It was one of those lunchboxes that looks like a nylon puffy tote bag. The person probably didn't know it was lunchbox. Thankfully I’ve never been in any of these circumstances, but one other thing that should be mentioned is, workers that come into your house! I’ve heard of people having say a plumber or electrician come in to your house and once they have spotted something of interest, they inform a “friend” of theirs and usually a week or so later, you get robbed. I would suggest, if you don’t know the worker you are inviting into your house, make sure you keep an eye on them and put away any thing that is of value to either you or money wise. Stay safe everyone

I usually mentioned it in regards to online hacking because a "safe password" & "don't click on links" isn't going to keep you safe if you're a target. Just like, not putting photos online isn't necessarily the solution because so many other people witnessed you outside of your socials. Even having a fake version doesn't matter. As we walked up the path to our house, an unkempt young man with a cigarette in his mouth asked me a question I didnt understand. I asked my mom what he said. It appeared he asked for directions and as soon as she pointed out where the street is loacated with her right arm that held her purse, he snatched it off and mom fought him. I was scared he might have had a weapon and screamed for mom to let go. She did. Weeks later the empty purse showed up at our front door in a black garbage bag. We felt so violated.

It was heartbreaking and infuriating .Like in your case , It's her work to buy , to unbox, to review ( most of the time) design items . I'm from Paris as well and the probelm you notice after living certain time in my city is the number of fake homeless people from Bulgaria , Romania ( gypsy people) who are sitting at the entry of your building ( especially posh districts ) and asking for money. In reality, they are there to discover, at same point, an entry code and to get to know daily habits of wealthy inhabitants so as to easily organize robberies . I believe that was in case of Tamara who buys lots of luxury , going back and forth with design logo purchases .

On a similar topic, I used to put my phone in my back pocket when i wasn't wearing my coat.. I once caught a guy grab it out my pocket in town and he dropped it and ran when my friend realised and shouted, so i've learned my lesson. x

Try to not be on your phone in public so you’re not an easy target. Criminals look for the distracted because they’re easier to prey on.

Sophie I watch a lot of your videos but rarely comment. I think all of the examples you provide are so relevant to anybody, whether you have a designer bag or not… if you appear vulnerable or hiding something of value it makes you a target. Thanks for sharing your experiences 😘

OMG Sophie, my heart was pounding when you were talking about the guy on the train sitting next to you and then following you! 😳

Ahhh this video scared me a little! But I get it, I have a designer bag and I cover it with another bag (like a cloth or a shopping bag) when I reach my destination I take it out. I became super paranoid ever since I got mugged on my 16th birthday!

We all need to be always aware and mindful of our surroundings while out in the public carrying nice things. Its such a shame this is happening most everywhere. Glad you were safe!

I used to work in New Orleans which is a crazy dangerous city. I never wore my wedding rings or any nice jewelry to work. It felt so great when I no longer had to go there. I can wear my nice things again. It wasn’t so much losing the items but more the fear that they will hurt or kill you. These days they will kill you for a Rolex, a handbag, or a car. Insanity. They even follow people home from the grocery store because they know you will be carrying in multiple bags and be more vulnerable.

@Sophie, thank you for highlighting important safety concerns that come along with wearing luxury. I think that a lot of people don’t want to be transparent about incidents like the ones that you’ve shared. Here in Chicago, a graduate student was killed and his belongings sold for $100. If people will smash up the so called magnificent mile to pillage LV bags, what will they do if they can follow me to a discreet location with a luxury bag. Safety is increasingly becoming a concern.

Sophie, I'm so glad you speak about the downfalls of owning expensive items my son was thrown off his mountain bike and the bike was stolen also my husband was followed by two men in a van whilst riding his bike luckily my husband was vigilant and got the men on his go-pro they stopped following him when he told them to smile 😆 my son hasn't ridden his bike since the incident you're correct we should be allowed to use the items that we have worked hard for but vigilance and awareness is paramount bless you Sophie 🙏

Hey Sophie, I had one incident when I had just graduated high school and was in town for the day. I had gone to the library and there was this guy who was acting suspicious and I was always running into him whenever I would go around a corner or down one of the aisles. I left the library and was walking down the street looking through shop windows and notices him standing across the street in the reflection. I turned and started walking further down the street and noticed that he had crossed the street and was following behind me. I immediately crossed the street again and ran into a drug store and started walking towards the back of the store. All along the back of the store there were mirrors angled from the wall onto the ceiling so the store clerks always had a view down every aisle to watch for shoplifters. I looked up and there he was over in the next aisle. I left the drug store as fast as possible and ran across the street. He had followed me and caught up with me at the street corner. It was winter and he had one of those long mid length car coats men wear with suits on and he stopped me face to face and he mumbled something to me and opened his coat up. I just said no thanks and walked on by him. It turned out being kinda funny because it was like something out of a movie where some sleazy guy opens up his coat and there are watches and all kinds of things pinned to the inside that he was trying to sell. Probably stuff he had pick pocketed. It was really creepy. The other things that I’ve had happen is when I’ve been driving on the highway and someone comes up behind me, changes lanes to go around me but then get right beside me and just keep the same speed as me. If I speed up they will keep up the pace so I usually have to put on the brakes so that they end up getting far ahead of me. Sometimes I’ve had to take an exit at the last minute and go a different direction to where I was going. I assume they were checking out the car to see if it was worth stealing or carjacking. I always take good care of my cars and have sometimes put aftermarket wheels on them.

Similar happened to me, except the guy had nothing under the coat... 🤪 I was also stalked on the beach, whilst I had my toddler with me. As I ran up the beach, he undressed and started (you know what)! There are some sick puppies out there. I would fit a dash-cam if I were you.

yea when people pull up next to your car and are obviously keeping the same pacce for no good reason i dont understand why people try to speed up. just hit your breaks lol. you were smart for doing that.

WOW! What crazy stories glad you made it out. I've also thought about how I could be a target when buying luxury and your tips were great. I've also made the effort to not do shopping, come back to my car and walk away - you just never know who is watching.

oh also i would say to be VERY very careful of jealous frieends. i learned that the hard way. i had jealous frriends who literally kneew i waas going to be gonee from my room, then they ransacked my room, took all my stuff, then had the audacity to lie and claim i was tkaing her things. from then on i was like wow. i will never everr trust 'friends" that are jealaous like that ever agian. this girl wwould constnatly make comments about my designer bags and ttell evreyone shee thinks they are fakee etc. so yeah- again- thaat just showed me to be very very careful about who you are around

While we were sitting in our hotel room (Cancun Mexico) a man walked in , looked at us and walked right out. If we weren’t there, our crap would have been ransacked and stolen. We are lucky enough to be smart enough to carry all high value stuff on us and leave behind our only our clothes /cheap suitcases

I live in Los Angeles and I know a few people who have been robbed. My neighbor was robbed when she was living in Bel Air. She and her family are private people with no social media. These tips are very helpful to anyone living in a city. I recommend those foldable flats be in your bag at least.

The shoe thing isn't crazy at all... I feel and realise that I'm a much more appealing target if I'm wearing platform sandals, or even a block heel boot. These are the most "limiting" types of shoes that I wear and I realise I'll have difficulty running with, if I have the need, so I can't even imagine people who wear heals everyday... Not only women are easier targets cause they're tipically less resistant and easier to dominante, but the shoewear just makes it even worse! It's sad that we have to consider think about these things, but it's true

Oh yes, a decoy wallet is a must! The thief's going to be in a hurry so they'd prob snatch/grab and run before they realize they just got an old wallet full of rewards cards and a few dollars.
