I had a great question from one of you a few weeks ago, talking about whether it's possible to buy luxury when you work a 9-5 job.
In this I chat through some of my thoughts and my own personal experiences. I think the answer to this is yes & no and will differ person to person (based on their salary + outgoings)
Please share your thoughts in the comments :)

Social media are destrying us. They distort reality. At 17 you shouldn't be obsessed with luxury bags. I started buying luxury bags after I was 30, when I started to have an economic stability, if you don't have it, how can you think about spending money on unnecessary things..?

I think at 17 you're probably doing well if you even HAVE a bag to put your stuff in. Designer bags are a status symbol in a way and while they are nice to have you shouldn't stress if you don't have them because you are 17 and haven't had time to work your way up yet. If you're 17 enjoy your youth and leave the status bags to old hags like me haha.

I think social media was at its sweet spot in 2010-2013. You could post a pic on IG and not get bamboozled with a post vs a story vs reel 😂😅 KZbin was just chill and it all felt more fun. I think in recent years some of the fun is being lost. Thank you both for sharing your thoughts on this 🙏🏽❤️ hugs xx

i don’t see a problem in thinking about spending money on “unnecessary things” at a young age. i’m 20 and i’ve been wanting luxury bags for years and obviously i understand i am in no position to afford such items but my desire and love for luxury bags motivates me. luxury is my goal so i work towards attaining it because that’s what i want and it’ll make me happy

@@SophieShohetOfficial I think also the last 2 years of being shut in has amplified this distortion because these influencers become in a way their "peer" group and there isn't that comparison to real life. I was in Vegas last week and did a little people-watching survey and even in a nice casino probably 1 in 100 handbags are designers that cost more than $300 and very few are anything more elaborate than Louis Vuitton. Saw a few Chanels and a single Birkin. Made me feel a little overdressed. I only dined out because I'm too old to go clubbing. Social media influencers are literally 1 in a million

You are, by far, the ONLY realistic, sensible, and truly logical "influencer" out there. I keep telling my 20 something nieces that buying Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Dior is not an everyday thing a normal person does. The trouble is, they're watching these people on KZbin who post nothing but their luxury hauls, they think that this is how they should be living! I try to explain to them that the influencers are being paid or being given vouchers a lot of the time so that these products and brands can be featured on their channels. They just think that they must have a Chanel bag. They wouldn't be caught dead wearing a $40 bag from TK Maxx. So frustrating.

I’m 20 and I would love the own luxury items but now it’s just not realistic for me to own such items at such a young age. I’ll just rock my MK bags I got from the outlet for now 😂. Me and my boyfriend are focusing on saving for our house that we at least want to built before the age of 27 when that’s done I’ll start saving for luxury. I’m not going to have unrealistic goals at such a young age and I will definitely not beg my parents for luxury goods, my goal is to buy my first luxury piece with my own hard-earned money but if my parents offer to buy me it I won’t say no either 😂

It is ABSOLUTELY possible to afford luxury and work a "9 to 5." However, it's totally dependant on salary & budgeting; those things determine how often you can actually afford to purchase. Buying 2nd hand certainly makes owning luxury more attainable in many cases. Multiple income streams also helps. It doesn't have to be beyond reach.

To be honest, it wasn’t something I could even think about early in my career. And then I had a family, so other needs took priority. Retirement savings were also a priority. also depends on what kind of experiences/holidays you like. my mother took my family on a holiday for the first time when i was 18-19 to spain. afterwards she said, i would much rather just book a summer cottage for a week (which costs the same as one persons holiday to spain). so she doesnt care about traveling far but rather holidaying in our country in a nice cottage, which is very cheap. now, shes not one to buy luxury, but just an example how peoples preferance of experiences can differ as well, doesnt always have to be expensive.

For me it was setting up a direct deposit to a separate “bag” account from my paycheck. For example if I make $500 a week and I put 8% into my bag account each week automatically when I get paid, that over $2k and the end of the year to get something like an LV or Givenchy bag. I did this while I was working in college and I was able to start my collection. Each of those bags is actually now selling for more than what I bought it for so I could probably resell them and get my money back. With the same logic, 8% of 500 is $40 a week. Could you maybe pick up one extra shift? Walk your neighbors dog or babysit on the side? I was a high-up manager at my last job making over $100k a year and guess what? I still walked my neighbors dog for her every night for side spending money! When you break it down, you can create a great savings plan to get what you want without going into debt.

Nah, not all jobs have these types of advancements. I can say I make a comfortable living, but I've max out my ability to earn more. Not all careers are business related. The smartest thing you can do is buy not what is trending but what is practical. I find bag walls tacky and no one needs 50+ bags. Start small, budget and shop around. Buy basic classic pieces and avoid watching unboxing videos or unfollow fast fashion luxury influencers. To own a Chanel, back in my day, was a badge of honour for safisticated women who found success in their later years not 20 year olds. Sustainability should be our focus. Sometimes our eyes are bigger than our stomachs.

Sophie could we possibly say also that it is not the most important thing in the world to buy designer handbags or items in general? Working like crazy is a choice and often a passion, but working to be able to buy designer items is mostly a non-sense. I own few myself, but I reckon the message to pass is that these are just possessions. Especially younger people should be taught to try to have a good balance between work and private life.

Everybody’s situation vary so vastly and industries vary as well so what one 9 to 5 type of situation pays can vary incredibly from another and it can also be based on your age , seniority and expertise in a certain industry I know that working in financial public relations 9-5 paid QUITE a bit higher then when I worked in public relations for nonprofits. I just had to get very creative and think outside the box on how to Afford luxury items and also adjust my perception and keep perspective / be realistic and realize that a lot of the folks I was seeing online might’ve been borrowing/being gifted items or going into horrendous credit card debt in order to feed the machine that is social media.

It all depends on your circumstances. I earn a decent salary. I'm single and in my late 30's but I own only 1 LV. The rest that I have are contemporary brands and I'm not planning to add any to my collection in the near future. I do have luxe bags on my wishlist and If I were only earning for myself, I could definitely afford to buy them but I can't because I'm supporting an ailing mother, a special needs sister and an older sister who quit a well paying job to take care of them. I am not sharing this to get sympathy because I am supporting them wholeheartedly. I just want to share how the context can be different for some of us. In my home country most of us don't have student loans because most parents usually put all their earnings into their children's education without saving for their own retirement. It is then expected that we help support them when they retire. It's not the most ideal and some cultures might not understand this set up but it is our reality. I would love to see this cycle break for the future generations but as of the moment it is what it is. And since I couldn't afford to always buy luxe even if I want to own them I am thankful for your videos because I can live vicariously through them. Thank you for sharing.

As someone who is part of your younger audience and will start university this fall, I really have to concur that social media can cause quite a decrease in morale. Seeing all those people, 1 or 2 years older than me, sometimes even younger than me, living lavishly like a 2nd Marie Antoinette can really cause for your own expectations to be set unrealistically. I always tell myself that those are the exception or have some background I am not aware of and should therefore keep in my own lane at my own pace, but seeing it plastered everywhere still gets to you in some ways... Hence why I am very appreciative and so open about your own journey and honestly say that you haven't bought higher priced items until later in your life.

I have a 9-5 job and buy luxe. I save, I focus on what I want, and I don’t get fixated on trends. I buy preloved, and in store. You have to strategise your budget, and manage expectations around your outgoings. I make sure my spending is in line with what is necessary first I.e. mortgage, bills and key outgoings, then I buy lux. I’m really focused on setting my self up for my future now, and have started building a share portfolio. Luxe is something I love, and I budget for that but only after everything else!

I also say pick your poison. I buy luxury for investment pieces not trendy items. I also limit myself to 1-3 luxury items per season. I’m curvy so luxury clothing items rarely work for me so i tend to go for handbags and shoes. Also, i’ve learned to take my time when purchasing and ask myself if this is something i really love or am i getting caught up in the hype! It’s just a freaking name and it should not dictate your worth as an individual

I do think that you can buy a few luxury items with a modest 9-5 job. However, I think people become skeptical when they see influencers doing unboxings every other week like let’s say, just an example, Maria Draganova, who claims to have a 9-5 job. Anyway… I don’t think anyone doubts that you are a successful professional, who can afford luxury. Love your videos❤️

Budget is huge for me. I've never bought from a boutique. So I settle for vintage. I still love the bag and it's got a story. Also, if it gets a touch dirty I'm not panicking. One day I'll celebrate a momentous occasion by going to a boutique and testing myself. ♥️ Your advice Sophie.

Vintage was made better. If it’s in good condition at a good price, you are absolutely coming out ahead. If you want to buy something new look into glasses, scarves, small leather goods, that sort of thing. That way you get the bag experience and the boutique experience.

Yes, it’ll come in time! My school debt was really high (US) that it felt I couldn’t afford anything fancy for years and years, but we paid it down so aggressively that the month after I finished my last payment all that money I would’ve paid went to a designer bag instead. This year I bought a couple luxury things because we didn’t spend any travel budget on actual travel so we decided to buy a few nice things. We also don’t have/want kids - just a slightly spoiled dog - so that’s a huge expense that we just don’t have to take into consideration. Everyone’s circumstances are different! Of course it’s an incredible blessing to even have a job and stable income in the current state of the world, let alone money for nice items, but at the end of the day what truly matters is family, health, a roof over your head, food on the table, and hopefully savings for later in life. The luxury items come last.

I am 22, I genuinely do love fashion.. but I am finishing my engineering degree and although I am lucky to be working on my desired field already, it’d be DUMB to buy designer stuff when I am this young. I care more about starting to save up for a house rather than buying stuff that is a luxury. Of course I’d love to own one or two designer bags in the future, in my thirties when I am already very financially stable (and have good savings). It’s cool that you take your time to say this time and again, because social media is warping the reality of being young. Much much love from Spain! 💕

When I was a young working woman, I bought mostly High Street clothing for work. You do not need a wardrobe full of designer goods - I always carried a designer bag, wore good heels, and as expensive watch as I could afford. It is the quality accessories that make it. But you don’t need more than that!

Some of them also buy bags and return them after they make a video! It is possible to buy (and keep!) expensive items on a working wage, but you need to prioritise. Even a Birkin, the most expensive bag of all, costs no more than a car. If you go without the car, you can have the bag, for example.

You absolutely can. My first pay went towards a Chanel classic flap. I work in IT and back then, I didn’t make much so I saved enough to buy the classic flap and didn’t buy another luxury bag for a long time. There’s a huge gap between my first designer bag and the future luxury items. I only started to buy more luxury bags once every other year or every year once my income reached a certain threshold that it was easier for me to justify the spending.

I just want to put it out there that I have only recently started a luxury collection, starting with Mulberry (exquisite leather quality!) Then recently got a LV key pouch. The rest of my bags are Fossil leather bags which I also love and bring to the hospital. I work as a doctor and use my income from my oncalls to pay for these stuff. I definitely can afford to buy more luxury bags but usually I go for 2nd hand items which are in great condition to pay less than the full price. Even then I think long and hard if I should get it as I save/invest most of my money. I make it an aim to finally be comfortable enough to buy a Chanel/dior/LV brand new at their store as motivation for myself to work harder. In no way should a person feel pressured to buy a luxury item and struggle financially at the end of the month.

Especially nowadays, with that whole “young entrepreneur” movement that promotes wealth and financial independence in the early 20s. There’s a difference between a minimum wage 9-5 and 9-5 with a degree and established career. Doctors, lawyers, bankers, etc all work 9-5 (or similar). This is where the confusion comes. We see so many young people carrying these designer bags and showing off their designer hauls. However, here’s a couple things that could explain all these young people showing off their designer bags on social media working entry level positions A) They have a side hustle. B) They may receive alimony or child support C) They may use smoke and mirrors. Meaning they buy all these items, do a video and unboxing, and then return all the stuff for a refund. D)Some of the items may be fakes (more possible in photos instead of videos). There are very very good fakes that takes someone trained in this to determine real vs fake. These AAA+ fakes could be mistaken for real in a photo. I was 34 when I got my first designer bag. It was only in the last 2 years (I’m 40 now) that my collection has grown and that was because I took a job in my field that paid much better (much better). Even though I can afford new bags, often I buy pre-loved because you can usually save a lot of money buying this way.

I think it really depends on your job AND your priorities. Im almost 30, and after taxes and retirement i make $70k/yr. I didnt go to uni and i've worked at the same company for 9 yrs (since i was 18, no i did not start at that salary). I could buy 1-2 bags a year no problem IF i didnt want to save for anything else. I definetly regret not saving up when I was younger because im about to apply for a mortgage (around 480k) and theres no way ill be able to save for one afterwards for a while. But instead I bought a new car (half cash) and went overseas a few times (wouldnt swap those trips for anything though!). Budgeting is an absolute MUST and it really annoys me they dont teach basic finance at schools (at least they didnt when I went). There isn't even ONE budgeting method there are several but nah go into the world at 17 and figure it out yourself with no knowledge of how anything works unless you google it yourself. I've learnt more from youtube about finance than anywhere else.

Hi, Sophie. Thank you for this video! I really enjoy these chats and story time videos. I also generally gravitate towards luxury KZbinrs who are of a slightly mature age because it is more realistic. Plus, the stories of how you and they got their bags are so wonderful. I truly believe that sometimes the journey is more important than the destination. I am in my early to mid 30s, and I was just able to buy a designer (Loewe. I understand that most people may consider that as a "lower luxury" brand, but I really love their designs) bag recently to celebrate getting a new job with a better working environment. In my 20s, I was still a bit lost, moving to different jobs and studying. I certainly had no time or income to spend on trying to buy luxury items!

That's a nice topic, honestly I never bothered about designer bags shoes and clothes until my manager and certain team members told me why ur bags and shoes are not luxury brands, all the team I work with all spend alot on their designer, that's the day that I flipped most of my wardrobe to designer. Honestly if you want to fit in with certain catergory of people and companies thats a mandatory, and I don't regret it, it is a totally new experiance and you feel that you are an upgraded polished person😀 that's after 15 years of work I could do it from my saving However my personal opinion I don't think that designers items are worth that much money spent on their bags and shoes, but the good part is that you can always sell it and get some cash back just in case😋

I didn't buy my first LV until I was almost 40 - and am very happy this was before there was social media and influencers. I was involved with an online purse forum for quite a while, and it was really bad for my bank account and wallet. Seeing everyone talking about the things that they bought and looking at pictures of their new bags drove me to buy, and sell, so many bags. Finally I had to step back and I ended up selling all but a few LVs that I really do use. Now I can pretty much buy anything I want, but I really don't - and you're right, Sophie, not having kids does help with the cash flow. I am an advisor for my sorority at a local college and it's amazing to me how many of the girls have LV, Tory Burch, and other designer goods which I assume their parents are buying them. Personally, I could never have afforded that kind of thing when I was in college!
