I am 70 and have been walking backwards for the past year. My hips and knees hurt so bad at one time that I could not lay down comfortably to sleep. Within three days of backwards walking I had no more pain when I laid down at night. I walk to the local middle school field and walk around the track. People sometimes ask me why I am doing it so I tell them. Another thing I use is an ointment called "Rub on Relief" by Living Well.

Walking backwards, as simple as it seems, can be so effective. Thank you for sharing and I’m so happy it’s working for you.

Walking or slow running backwards up quite steep inclines/hills is especially brilliant for many reasons that'll soon become obvious as you get used to it and find you can't live without it(possibly literally!!). I try to do it outside on public paths in low-traffic areas either barefoot or almost barefoot(in the woods ! ) - wearing just old-ish socks that are starting to wear out. To avoid falling over, beginners should focus on raising their heels higher than normal as they heave each leg backwards at the end of every stride or retro-stride - just before the foot touches the ground. And retro-walking-jogging-running also uses significantly more energy/calories than "normal" boring non-retro walking-jogging-running. The list of benefits is very long indeed. Of course, top football/soccer players etc have been doing it in long serried lines on training grounds for many many decades... Paul G

Lateral walking stints in the "retro-fartlek" mix - yep, Me-Too ! It's not exactly walking - but we "lateral thinkers" aka crazy people know what we mean. Again - it's all even better walking or slow-running backwards up steep-ish inclines or hills(not just more muscle power needed but far less impact on the spine and on all bones between the foot and the spine(the polar opposite is true of course when running, jogging or hurtling downhill...) I try to walk 6 miles outside every other day, but it's been getting painful with my L3 back compression fracture, and back and knee arthritis. I recently started backward walking on the treadmill at my gym. I do 5-minutes of backward treadmill (dead mill) walking at the start of my weightlifting workout and 5-minutes at the end. I've been pleasantly surprised that my back and knee pains have diminished after my workouts. I wish I had started doing this years ago.

I did start doing it out of pure instinct, intuition and curiosity many years ago - long before I finally decided to search the web to see if any other "crazy" people anywhere on the planet were intelligent enough to be doing the same. Boy - I was very surprised to discover that there are millions of intelligent forward-thinking retro-crazies like us out there worldwide but "retros" are still so rare a sight that you're almost as unlikely to see an alien out jogging - forwards or backwards - than a fellow human walking-jogging-running backwards down or up the street. Careful, walk backwards on grass not on metalled or paved roads. People tend to lose balance and fall backward. Hitting the back of the head with a fall on a hard surface may cause serious problems in old people.

Coming from being an athlete (50 km running a week, fencing, dancing, pilates) an agonizing groin pain turned me into a couch potato in three years. MRI-scans didn't show any hip arthritis. Other specialists couldn't help me either. Strange thing is: I can walk uphill (or upstairs) without pain. Downhill or downstairs is impossible; shooting pains. Walking backwards downhill though, is painfree. Anyone an idea what is the cause of my pain?
