I have arthritis in my right leg. I exercise by walking up and down the stairs. I lower myself slowly with my right leg. At the same time I use my left arm to also support myself. So I gradually lower myself using only my right leg. Before I knew I had osteoarthritis I avoided using my right side. I thought I had torn a groin muscle. I was letting it heal. Now that I know I go up and down the stairs. It is helping.

You go girl! I found out the hard way how important this one leg standing can be. I had a terrible reaction to a knee injection with lots of pain. I had a terrible time getting up. My grab bars were on the wrong side to help. My knee took 6 weeks to heal but the hip and shoulder took longer due to too much pushing in transfers. As we age things can get hurt, so one leg standing is so important for transfers. Needless to say this is in my exercise routine now.

I’ve just recently discovered your channel. I’ve had OA for years taking ibuprofen 800 mg and occasional shots in my knee. Just recently I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in my hands. Unfortunately, my ibuprofen was taken away so the only thing I can take is Tylenol. I am so grateful I discovered your channel. Please advise how many reps on this exercise of getting up and down I can do daily? My mobility has definitely suffered the past two months, I have to turn sideways to go down one step, again thank you so much. So thankful I saw this video. I’m 71, have always been active. How many sets a day do you suggest?

This is the exact movement that is the hardest, most uncomfortable, painful that I struggle to negotiate every day. Both knees have several old injuries, are in valgus, and my one chair in my rooming house existence is low, my knees are bent at about 45 degrees. To get up I lean my torso just about parallel to my thighs, place both palms on the chair, lift my hips into the air, grab a support (my exercise bike on track stand) straighten my legs and move stiffly til the knees operate better. My feet are bad too, I couldn’t function without orthotics but once I get moving I’m not too bad, I walk several k per day. Maybe if I can get enough pillows so my legs are about a 90 degree angle I could stand from the chair better. I’ve got to stay mobile as long as possible as I’m alone!

This is a great exercise. Putting it in my routine. I'm a 67-year-old male in good shape. I also have OA mainly in my hips. I'm almost 15 weeks post total left knee replacement and everything is going great. I began 8 weeks of PT the day after surgery and my therapist told me to keep doing the exercises when I was released from treatment which I am. Physical therapy has been absolutely essential in my recovery from this type of surgery. My knee flexibility went from -5, 126 degrees to 0, 125 degrees now and still improving. Interestingly, my weight went from 202 pounds to 185 after the surgery and I am holding that weight which is a nice plus. Now following your channel, Alyssa. Thanks, Mike in Denver.

You are talking osteoarthritis; I am 72 years old and in my 12th year of symptomatic psoriatic arthritis that has affected mostly lower back, feet, knees and now right hip which has radically reduced my mobility and thrown my walking off. I see no way this exercise works for someone who can barely get up out of a chair without holding on and then hobbling in great pain. However I have no doubt this will work well for someone who is not in my condition with this autoimmune disease.
