Here we go again! Online scaremongering. People thinking you can buy a 15-20 year old sports car like a 911, at 100k plus miles, and expect it perform faultlessly forever just because it’s the most expensive car *they* have ever bought. It’s an old car! Old cars go wrong! You cannot fix cars like these on a Ford budget. Budget for about £2-3k maintenance per year, buy the best car you can possibly afford, not the cheap one in the colour you liked. If you can’t afford this, then you can’t afford the car and you are not in the market. Get over it.

😂 I can tell you by far this wasnt even close to the most expensive car I have ever bought. I wouldn’t call £10k expensive and overhauling it I ain’t complaining as I have the money for it. I ain’t ever paid more then £10k for any car even my M5 and my M3 it’s a car not a house. You may go out and buy a car in this state for £25k+ but I certainly would not based on everything this car needs and they will all need this sooner or later.

@@BMWDoctor I hope you’re not referring to me as a clown 🤡 i was talking about commenters in general who pay very little for a 911 (compared to the cost of the car when it was new) then expect to run it for pennies, and act like the world has come to an end when it inevitably requires money being spent on it. I have a 996 and spend money fixing things before they become a serious issue, that’s preventative maintenance - the car has been brilliant - but then I paid good money for a good car with low mileage, impeccable history and near mint condition, so it’s no surprise really.

@@jackcarter66 there is your answer you paid too dollar for the car where I don’t do that and never will. You cannot give £25k for a 911 and expect it to be perfect at some point it’s going to need everything I have done even if you minus the engine rebuild just the suspension overhaul and coolant pipes, that alone is expensive luckily I do it all myself but that is common on all 997 and 987s there is no avoiding that and by the time you factor in £25k+ for one then have to do that which I know none of these Porsche guys even think of doing that I went and saw many I was even gonna post a video and embarrass half of the Porsche community as I find it disgusting they haven’t done anything I have done you go their cars are on 80-90k and everything is shot and they expect top money for them cars the Porsche community is a crazy community. And every one I went to see I offered them £10k cash and all was thinking I was mad yet them cars are still sitting up on eBay not even sold. And that’s why we do videos like this telling people not to buy one for £25k unless it’s had all of this done as it means these porsche guys will be stuck with that car unless they put good money into it and if they can’t do it themseleves we’ll then they have to sell it cheap. Look me and Nathan know what we are doing we are what made the prices fall on bmw doing these kind of videos we put a end to people selling neglected and ambushed BMWs they had to scrap them. The more awareness we make the more these porsche guys will drop the prices as they will struggle as people are not just aware of bore score and ims they are now aware it needs a lot more then just that.

@@BMWDoctor I take your point, I really do. I have over 20 years trade experience - and worked in the Porsche network selling 986 / 987 & 996 / 997 new between 02 and 06. The scaremongering I refer to are people who just repeat what they’ve heard online without any actual hands on experience - creating a ton of misinformation that damages the brand. The skill is in buying the right car, for a realistic price and understanding these cars require time and serious financial investment to be appreciated fully - I sold cars to lots of people who quickly panicked and sold them on because the hadn’t realised the level deprecation and costs of maintenance and ownership were way above what they could afford. I love my 996, but she’s high maintenance and is no daily driver 😅

@@BMWDoctor I know it's not possible literally but what would be your best estimate of % of cars w bore scoring on a well maintained (that is to say, not neglected) 75-85K mile 996, 997 or 987? Same question re: shot cooling lines pipes hoses and brake lines? It's hard to understand how there is such a steady market for these cars (with IMS RMS AOS etc. sorted) if they're all short-term 10-20K repair time bombs about to go off. One of the positives for even buying ones of these is they seem to have hit the bottom of the depreciation curve so at least at resale time you're not going to get rinsed (although now that we are in inflationary times-which are here to stay but that's another story-'maintaining' equal value is actually substantial depreciation, for example a car bought in 2021 for 20K USD and sold in 2023 for exactly the same actually LOST about 3500 in purchasing power value, which nobody seems to realize...that is how vicious inflation is.) But the positive of 'no depreciation' seems like it's offset by the inevitable huge $$ hit. I've always wanted one of these cars, but I can't wrench a damn thing myself and I've had my share of putting $$ into older cars (which I love) that you NEVER get back, breaking down on the side of the freeway and almost getting killed, etc. Maybe it's a 2022-3 BRZ or GR86 w 10K for me after all lol. How sad 😅 Ta and cheers.

I never get these kind of “Porsches will fail videos”. I am on number six and although I have had my share of small issues I always put mileage on them, much of it driven all year in Colorado, and have never even heard of much of this nonsense. 79 911 SC Targa-yes it leaked oil, sold it at 135000 miles, still running great. 86 944 NA, damn dash cracks, overheating due to the archaic model T type cooling system. But fixable. Otherwise magnificent car. Sold it at around 120000 miles. Running strong and would still top out at 130mph. 2001 996. Great little car-despite its reputation. Yes I was talked in to replacing the IMS. 102000 miles, was a dual row. Looked new. Sold it around 117000 miles. Not a single issue when I sold it. 2010 Boxster, never a single issue. Sold at 60000 because I moved to a two car garage. 2021 Macan. No issues other than my wife hated it. Sold at 10000 miles. 2013 Boxster. Has 30000 miles no mechanical issues, but my radio is ridiculously cheap. Hyundais have better radios. And my door panels at the base of the windows are mildly warping. Only I notice it. Never misses a beat it came with the stronger Porsche IMS so no issues there. It did have Bore Scoring after 3 years and Porsche paid 75% of the costs to repair. No issues since and it doesn’t use any oil in between services. Apart from the usual consumables the car has been bullet proof. Don’t let the KZbin scaremongers put you off. I put lithium grease around the ends of my coolant pipes 11 years ago when I got my 997 and they still look good at the ends (no leaks). My brake pipes still have all their paint on them an I have greased around the exposed parts. I would consider the Porsche better than most cars in every way except for the bore scoreing. Even the IMS was not really the biggest issue, just swap it out when you change the clutch and when you rebuild the engine just put the bigger one in. Febi Bilstein make coffin arms for porsche. I have had good luck with their components. I think the biggest expense on these cars come from all the "up sells" at the specilists. In fact they are easy (well easier than BMW) to work on and componets are made to a high stand so most parts last. I did the clutch on my 997 and it was one of the easist I have ever done (except for 70s RWD cars). I would say that a 997 is a car one should buy as long as you have a plan as to how you are going to handle all the potential problems.

First of all i think your title is misleading, as you claim to not buy a 997. In your video the first remark you make is that, regarding you, a lot happens by 80000-100000 mls. I think you should mention that in the title. Second, a SPORT car with 80000-100000 mls is quite a lot. In my opinion you can not state not to buy a 997 in general. It depends on how maintenance has been carried ( dealer or handyman)out and also depends how the car is driven and maintained by previous owners. It’s not different from any other car. Third, is that the 997 was born 2005, almost 20 years ago, so it’s possible that you get costs due to age, as all other cars of 20 years will have. Fourth; I hear a lot about expensive parts. Hello, it’s a Porsche, not a VW beetle, so you know on forehand that parts will be more expensive when you own a Porsche. Also a lot of footage regarding bore scoring ( which only 6% of all sold cars have issues with)/ IMS can be found on internet. With that the costs to have these, well known issues, fixed. So in my opinion you can perfectly buy a used Porsche 997. Just do your homework and know what you can expect and make up mind what you want to do. Buy a car with all issues fixed, save some more money and buy one with lowe mileage, or buy one and take care of the common issues yourself. Last remark i want to make is that a Porsche 997 is considered a good investment, prices are stable and even rising as the car is a potential future classic. I saw my 997 Turbo mk2 go up 30.000 euros in three years time…. So i would say: BUY A 997!

Most of the work done here is preventative maintenance rather than repairs. If one part fails, it's good practice to change all the common wear parts in the vicinity to save on labor in the future. Any car over 15 years old is going to need thousands in annual maintenance like this to keep it in top condition. Driving a Porsche 911 is an expensive hobby that also happens to be transportation.

Disagree completely on the "any car over 15 years is going to need thousands of year in maintenance". My weekend only driven 2006 Z4M that I have had for over 10 years is averaging about $400 a year in maintenance/repair (tires and fluids). I can now spend $6k (600 x 10) and my average would still be $1k a year.

997 Gens 1 is a ticking time bomb. Dont buy one. 997 Gen 2 is a superior car in every respect. Here in the UK there is a massive difference in condition, totally depending on where in the country the car has been used. Scotland is a no no complete rust buckets, best are south west cars. What this guy does not realise, when you come to sell it & make these huge claims of being the best. Porsche buyers being what they are want to see all of the work done by a main dealer or at least a Porsche specialist. They are all demanding buyers, going to the point of being ridiculous in my own experience. Just noticed its a tiptronic. What an awful prehistoric gearbox it is. Its an old Merc box. You must be mad to dump the money you are into this car.

You are very wrong indeed this car has been sold for the last 2 months I already took a deposit on this. And to help you further it was someone from the porsche club who bought it for £32,000 as he will tell you find him another 997 in the country like this when it’s done? You can’t and won’t be able too! As for the gearbox the Mercedes gearbox is the superior gearbox and the one people want it’s actually the ZF gearbox people avoid not the Mercedes one. 997 is only a ticking time bomb in the wrong hands of people who cannot do what I do with these this isn’t my first rodeo trust me. Yeah and they said that about my BMWS yet I always manage to sell them just showing what I have done on the videos 😄 that’s what they say about bmw I can’t sell them without receipts yet I manage to sell every car I get on my channel within weeks even a E60 M5 which for most people is hard to sell in this day and age being a V10. Having channels like ours documented and a big following cars ain’t hard to sell at all. The proof is right there on videos nobody needs to pay skanks in garages labour to show anything. Also porsche guys ain’t used to people like myself having a channel like I do that’s why they demand receipts unfortunately I’m a different person to “most porsche guys” as I have a big channel and I’m very recognised so that helps me sell whatever I need to sell. I’m the only person on the Porsche club that has a channel as big as I do! And that alone speaks volumes especially when I attend the car meets having a lift something most porsche guys don’t have they work on axle stands at the front of their house 😂
