Yea that about explains it. The added pressure of improving at low level when you are just having fun with the game isnt worth it.

It depends. Opening courses are a waste of money in my opinion. But other aspects are much more difficult to find comprehensive free content such as endgame theory or positional knowledge. Chess has many layers and just because I watch a 10-20 minute video on rook endings doesn't mean I know everything about rook endings. Also, if you solely rely on free content you might never know what you're missing to improve your game. A good chess book can walk you through many concepts you never thought about. The same can be true of online courses but I think chess books are a lot more cost effective. You can even purchase digital chess books with an analysis board like in forwardchess or chessable to some extent. forwardchess is formatted like an actual book unlike chessable where you have to continuously click away from one variation to the other. So, I partially agree with your comment.

If you like and enjoy and find it fun to learn from a particular streamer or youtuber, then by all means by his/her course. How much it helps you depends upon the effort and intensity you put into using the course, BUT it will also probably be enjoyable. I've played chess for decades, long before the internet. In my day, the advice was to go over game collections, and the annotated games of Capablanca and Botvinnik were usually the most suggested by "my elders." But the games of Tal, for example, were more interesting and more fun to play through, even if they had less instructive value to a young player. But more fun > more instructive.

Of course what's the point buying courses when you can waste 10 hrs/day playing the exact same openings and probably winning half or less then half of the matches. I think you should most definitely buy both courses and books.

I'm guilty or purchasing a few chessable courses a while back. That's because I was stuck at 2000+ online for a long time and didn't know the best way to improve. A couple of the courses turned out to be great and useful. However, I learned to build an opening repertoire using free online databases and stockfish so these days I largely find opening courses a waste of money. For the other aspects of the game I prefer a physical book with a physical board. The reason is that I'm a lot more likely to take as long as I need to understand the positions otb than to click away or check the engine when working on my computer. People who think they're going to improve hundreds of points or more by simply going through chessable courses will be in for a rude awakening. Chess is not a game you can memorize. It takes years of hard work to understand the game and find the best moves on our own.

Here we go again with those famous words "Work hard" on what? and how exactly? Everyone tried that for years and it does not work. Structured hard work produces the results as long as you understand that there must be an intelligent system or guidance behind it with measurable or quantifiable results over time. Hard work is like lifting weightsat the gym. While there may be some benefit to that, you still need the necessary guidance and intelligence in doing it effectively

Don't let this video fool you. Most titled players had professional coaches and/or read many chess books. Online courses can help but the format may or may not be the best way to learn chess and study chess. For me, nothing beats a good chess book. I don't pay for material on openings (books or courses) because I use databases and engines for that. For the other aspects I prefer physical books and a physical board.

To me, buying a course while being under 2000 elo is totally pointless. The road to handle the game better than the average club player is made of practice and long-term commitment. That's the way you absorb the principles of the game. On the other hand, if your goal is to become a professional, preparation becomes a matter of theory and memorization, then you HAVE to study from courses. Absolutely necessary. However, from what I have experienced watching pro matches, I would say that chess becomes an extremely boring game where big part of it seems to be prearranged. Knowing the main opening lines of your opponent becomes a crushing factor you cannot ignore, and I would hate to lose to someone just because he saw me playing a hundred times the sicilian defense and noticed a weak spot in my play. That doesn't make my opponent better than me. It's like figuring out that a teacher constantly asks the same question during an exam, and then taking advantage of it. It doesn't make you a better student than the one who didn't know. Games up to 1800-2000 are pure logic. Those of grandmasters are theory and culture. Personally, I would never commit my life to such a goal. Seems as compelling as memorizing phone numbers of a whole town. What are they worthed, as you step out of its boundaries? All you need to do to be a great chess player is to calculate. That's something that makes your brain work. Certainly not repeating the ingredients of a recipe aloud until you know all of them. It's like Fischer said: "I am a scientist. I am in search of the truth, but nowadays it seems to mean very little in chess". Or even better, quote from Morphy: "The ability to play chess is the sign of a gentleman. The ability to play chess well is the sign of a wasted life".

I don't agree that you need courses if you wanna become a professional player. All these opening courses are redundant especially when Stockfish and chess encyclopedias are free online. Even all endgame courses are free.
@user-tc6rw4hp6s
@user-tc6rw4hp6s 2 ай бұрын
@@theoneandonlyhooda I can't say much about it because I never took one. What I know is that every professional player attended theory courses. What I dislike is that courses promote this idea where you can "buy" automatic improvement, and that's not how it works. It's like studying at a private school, there is no way you can become an expert in a certain field other that sitting at a table and studying several hours a day, public or private doesn't matter. Same happens for chess. You have to play thousands of games in order to improve, you can't expect to pay few hundred dollars and improve automatically.
@theoneandonlyhooda

@@user-tc6rw4hp6s Who said every professional player attended theory courses? That's cap. They did rely on chess books and computers, which can be easily found online - you only need a smartphone or computer. I know for a fact that all the prep at the top level is solely dependent on Stockfish. Heck, you can make your own prep and invent your own novelties.

People send content creators super chats and donations. So if a Chess Content Creator on the scale of Levy puts a book out then it's a great deal for both parties. People spend £10 for a super chat which is ignored or merely spoken outload. Spend £15 to buy Levy's book is a bargain in comparison. But then you mention getting a Chess Tutor..... How much will that cost. 🤣 Personally I wouldn't buy a chess course. £15 is a few cups of coffee from a coffee shop. It's absolutely peanuts.
@sam2725
@sam2725 10 ай бұрын
Your taking quite a leap in logic just to defend levy. Buying a course is almost the same as donating, but that is not the way that it is marketed. When levy is shilling his courses, he makes sure to mentione how much they would help your chess journey, instead of saying 'buy them if you want to donate me money'. And the reason most people buy them isn't to donate, it's because they want to improve their chess.. It's just manipulative and shitty behaviour imo, taking advantage of his mostly young impressionable fans, and the people desperate to improve their rating by blatantly lying to them. Also his chessable courses for example are around 60 dollars+, your downplaying quite a bit throwing the '£15' around

@@sam2725 I said Levy's videos on different openings helped me a lot. I am thinking about buying the course because I find Levy's explanation to be very easily understandable. Hikaru is a better Player than Levy. But his thought process is extremely high and hard to understand. I'm not saying in a bad way. My simple counter or rather my two bits is that, I find Levy helpful. And like me many do too. Saying we are impressionable fans and desperate to improve is an inductive view of yours. So you are a guy with a KZbin channel which seeks attention to increase page views which result in ad revenue/income. You are more of a chess entertainer than a chess teacher. Some of guys/gals who sell beginner/intermediate chess courses produce some excellent learning resources. Some are talented educators committed to helping students improve steadily. You are not qualified/justified to blanket denounce one's choice to purchase a chess course. The unconditional NOT in your description is poor judgement on your part. Are you worried people learning the game via chess courses will not give you the income earning page views you crave?
