Oh, the Nintendo 64. It’s the console I probably have the fondest memories of since it was the first home console I’ve ever played. I remember getting up at 8am, having breakfast and then gaming until supper time, or until my parents literally forced me to stop playing. Those were the good ol’ days where I didn’t have a care in the world. Now, I have to worry about adult stuff like mortgage payments and going to work. It makes me wish I could go back in time to when all I had to worry about was how much time I’d be able to spend gaming each day.
If you’re like me and reminiscing about the Nintendo 64, then maybe you’re considering actually buying the console. I still own my N64, but if you want one, go get one! You definitely won’t regret it. For starters, it’s not very expensive to get a grey N64. If you want a special edition N64, like the blue and yellow Pikachu edition, then you’re going to need to shell out a bit more money, but you’ve got a collector’s item at that point. The games are the biggest selling point of the console since almost every single one of them is great.
There’s more reasons than just those to get a Nintendo 64 so enjoy the video, let me know whether or not you’re thinking of buying an N64 in 2021 in the comments section below and don’t forget to subscribe to TheGamer for more gaming tech content.

In general, the N64 is looked down-upon due its homogenous library, controller, graphics and objectively typically poor video output. It was revolutionary to me and so holds a special place in my mind. But kids used to 360 degree control and non-linear 3D gaming will probably ignore the N64.

Still love playing my games on the N64, rareware was one of the best things Nintendo ever had on the N64 loved playing banjo kazooie/Tooie conkers bad fur day Diddy kong racing and all the other games rareware made for that system. It truly broke my heart💔 when rareware left Nintendo would have been so cool to play those games on the go with the Nintendo switch.

Your point about emulation being "illegal" is technically incorrect, although practically correct. Emulators are not illegal, and you're making the stretch of the idea that the only method of creating emulation is pirating games. Dumping games in a legal matter is totally possible, and it's up to the gamers to source ROMs in a legal matter (and not pirate). Most people will pirate games, correct, but that does not mean emulation is illegal. If emulation was illegal, it wouldn't be as prevalent online as it is today.

Exactly and it can also be a gray way to experience your old games in an internal higher resolution or, in the case of Mario 64, stick to a 30fps cap in the largest levels, where the N64 would drop frames

Downloading is flat out legal. Distribution is the illegal thing in copyright law. There's some confusion because if people use a P2P/torrent downloading application or something, they're distributing stuff at the same time, usually without really knowing it.
@shanez1215
@shanez1215 2 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly the justification for ripping games is because you're allowed to make an "archival copy" of movies or music you own and burn them to discs as long as you didn't sell them. The equivalent would be a backup copy of a game and then exploiting your console to accept it. But there was a case where the court considered playing the media on a different device (example being ripping your CD's and DVD's to a computer/Plex server/mp3 player) to be "transformation" where the two were considered different copies. If we apply that same logic, emulating games on different devices than the original isn't necessarily completely legal. It's a grey area. But it's not really enforceable since how exactly will anyone know if the process can be done 100% offline?

A really good game, stays a really good game even when the current technology has far surpassed it. I played Star Fox 64 for about 3 days straight just about a month ago. I recently picked up Shadows of Empire, Waverace, Turok and Conker's Bad Fur Day because it had great multiplayer as well. I know I'm old and it isn't coming back, but I miss when games were designed to be played with other people on your couch. Now it's all meant to be played online with some raging 13 year old in some random location on Earth who you have never met, will never meet and will never want to meet. I don't always want to play games through nostalgia goggles. I do like the new directions the XSX and PS5 took. However, DLCs and added content got a bit out of hand with loot boxes. I have a humble collection of about 25 consoles, and 10 different handhelds and there is nothing as enjoyable as playing games on the original hardware.

I had a decent N64 collection several years ago but sold it all off as I wasnt playing it much and trying to store everything was getting to be a hassle. Well I picked up another one cheap recently, and I am going the Everdrive-esque route myself this time. A loose cartridge collection isnt very appealing to me anyway, plus the games are getting expensive, for less than the price of Conkers Bad Fur day I can buy a ED64 and have the entire library on that 1 Cartridge with sd. A no brainer, for me at least, and its still original hardware and software, no emulation, still using all original peripherals on a 36" Sony Trinitron. The N64 is still a very hard system to emulate with good results so I feel this is the best solution to play the games these days, old cartridges while more reliable than old discs, still have battery and/or corrosion issues or bent pins. Its fun to revisit the old well known games and try some I missed the 1st time around. And no downloads, updates or online BS to fiddle with either.

I've already purchased a copy of Nightmare Creatures to play and copies of Golden Eye and others will follow in time. It will be a part of my Retro Set-Up that includes an Atari 2600 Vader Edition, my original Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Dreamcast, and Nintendo Wii. I never owned an N64 when they came out, but I played them a bit, along with the GameCube, at friend's houses. I'm looking forward to adding it to the collection.

ABSOLUTELY worth it. Great games (as you already know), you can get a flash cartridge and play ALL the games (everdrive 64 also has an nes emulator so it can play most of those too and it's region free), and the hardware is some of most solidly manufactured I've ever seen. I've dealt with many older consoles that had issues and the N64 seems to be one of the best built. No moving parts -No hardrive or laser to go bad. The systems are now 25 years old, and the only problem I ever had was one that had a non working controller port (probably just dirty). The one have now I fully expect to work in 20 years, and I wouldn't be surprised if it still works 50 years from now. These systems will be going long after most switches die. Also a plus to play it on a Sony Trinitron. The colors look great for stuff like ssb and mk64. Think I'm a little OCD about it, but I prefer the experience of using original hardware with a crt tv. That's the most accurate way to play for me. I have sm 3d all stars on the switch but I never play sm64 on it. I'd much rather play it on my n64. Not too into the cart collecting tho..that can be pricey.

I imported one before its European release, but it’s my least played Nintendo console despite having some phenomenal games. PS1 got the most of my time in that era. The feeling you describe about games of your childhood is more applicable on the SNES and NES in my case.

After recently getting a free CRT TV I finally dug my old (second, not childhood original) N64 out of storage along with some games I thankfully kept like Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, No Mercy, and Mario Tennis. Kicking myself for selling a few games (probably for pennies) back in the day but enjoying revisiting these classics. Re-buying a couple old games too before they increase in value even more. By the way, I'd highly recommend buying a Forever Pak if any of your old memory cards still work. They're a little pricey but should more or less work indefinitely since you won't lose data when the batteries die.

Also, check locally for retro or second-hand gaming shops. I'm lucky that I have two of them within a twenty-minute drive in the Midlands of SC. The lowest price I've seen has been about $65.00 for a "good" console (Good = some scratches, discoloration, and aesthetic issues that don't affect functionality.) and $100.00 for a "very good" to "excellent" console. And those grades (if you want to call them that) are only missing the original box but look like they've been well maintained.

I remember getting my first Nintendo 64 Christmas of 1996. I was beyond excited! This system was ahead of it’s time. The original system was black. 4 controllers and used a cartridge for the games. The original controller had two joy sticks, a d pad, 4 yellow C buttons, a Z trigger button on the bottom and a spot to put a memory card in or a rumble pack. I love how this controller feels! When playing Super Mario 64 you really get a feel to how the controller works. For instance you can easily have Mario run in a full 360 circle by just moving one of the joysticks in a circle. The controls are very responsive. Super Mario 64 starts out very easy and gets more challenging as you move deeper into the castle and collect more stars. I love this game! I highly recommend the Nintendo 64 system and Super Mario 64.

Playstation 1 controller design kills N64's though. The joystick is more accurate and much smoother when rotating. I owned a N64 in 1996 - loved it but did switch to PSX around 1999. The PSX had much more games and seemed mostly targeted to older kids/teens as opposed to Nintendo. BUT Nintendo-only games were and are still amazing in their own right 👌🏼

@@Aaroncarter55726 Ah man that's so great. I love the fact that they brought back all those old consoles to make them accessible for the newer (and older) gens to experience them. I'm currently replaying Pokemon Gold on a Gameboy Color emulator and Zelda: A Link to the Past on a GameCube emulator. I love re-playing those classic titles that really stand out for those franchises. Game on bro!

Definitely get the expansion pak and an everdrive flash cart. Lots of goldeneye custom maps and campaigns to play and Mario 64 hacks . The n64 can play fmv video clips too, it can play nes and gameboy colour roms. So much to dabble with if you get an everdrive
I bought every Nintendo Console EVER.
