20 + years in building cars , I have never heard about torque plates or thought of the concept. But I am not an engine builder , just install them . Great video . Just shows no matter how long you have been doing things , there is much to learn .

Contrary to popular belief, you don't actually want a plate in there. You want maximum flexibility and distortion as things are a little tight from factory and need a bit of working to adjust properly.

I think its a good idea on any engine that is being modded. I had a torque plate done for the SR. The machine shop liked it so much they call me to rent it anytime they do a SR block now.

Was kinda waiting for measurement differences with and without torque plate. Last 1JZ I did was bored with torque plate, and yes it runs perfectly with zero blow by. Unfortunately did not have proper tools in the home garage at that time to measure the block bores before machining and after. Just gave the block and torque plate to the machine shop, and they did all the work. They even said the plate was useless, as they have tested them before on many inline4 and 6 engine blocks, and could not justify the ever slight difference it made. Don't know how true that is....today everything sells in the motorsport and performance industry if the marketing of the products is *right*.

After watching this video twice, reading the majority of comments under this video, and then going to other sites talking on the topic of torque plates, it's basically meant to simulate natural distortion with the head on and no pistons in the block so that the bore / hone is done to more real world accuracy. Is that it or am I wrong?
@vitamulten13954 жыл бұрын
I feel dumb i have never heard of torque plates before as it makes perfect sense. Just curious why they dont do this at the factory at least for high performance engines.
@driftmouse_official5 жыл бұрын
Also you can use a killed block as a torque plate if you cut it and get the thread for the head bolts away. Don't forget to turn it upside down. This is a pretty silly way but still works.
@Dollsofgod5 жыл бұрын
Or convert a spare head to a torque plate if you have one laying around and don't mind sacrificing it.
@driftmouse_official5 жыл бұрын
@@Dollsofgod but it's shit, cause you'll loose it's stiffness by making big holes in the head, cylinder-close size, no?
@Dollsofgod5 жыл бұрын
I'm no structural engineer but I don't think it would give you a worse result. Would the head be weaker as a singular piece? Sure, but would that translate to a less accurate distortion it would put on the block if you bolted it to it? I don't think it would in any meaningful way. If anything you could argue that the billet head simulators they use or your idea are too stiff and that the over stiffness gives you an equally bad result when trying to simulate an assembled block. We're talking maybe a few thousands of an inch here either way, I think it's just as valid an option as any other for the desired effect.

If you are trying to simulate the engine with the head bolted on etc, then you should really heat the block to operating temps.

@YouCantSawSawdust Жыл бұрын
No. There is no benefit because the block is heated in a totally different manner from combustion temperatures as compared to coolant temperature. It's all been verified many,many years ago. Ring Dart(USA) and ask them. They will confirm this. They have done the analysis.

Some engines are terrible for going square. 136000 mile 400 Ford and you could still see hone marks at the top of the bore. In 4 spots along side the head bolts. Surprisingly it had very little lip. and was vaguely fumy but ran ok. Never thought about iron v alloy heads and different torque plates. my feeling is very little difference though. Having the hole for the machines ofcourse loses some simulation, but as overhauling engines torque plated you do not see odd patterns like I described above. A cheap way to make power and even better durability.
@michaelmills43485 жыл бұрын
what about engine heat, would that not distort the block slightly too?
@alexisthemexican5 жыл бұрын
Everything else tweaks with it. Maybe not in the same way, but that's why having the Torque plate will help minimize those differences at running temps.
