A quick counterpoint with Lilith's "redemption" arc. First of all, It's definitly not done yet. Lilith's entire motivation through Season 1 was atoning for her mistakes without having to stand up to them. All she wanted was to cure Eda's curse, so the moment that Belos pulled the run out from under her, she instantly swapped sides because her motive hasn't changed. And Second, She's definitly not hunky dory with Luz, Eda, and King. Luz straight up says she doesn't trust her, but only agrees to her help out of desperation. And in the final scene with the four of them, Lilith's always standing to the side or distancing herself from Eda and Luz. She still has a ways to go in S2
@jbcatz53 жыл бұрын
Lilith has paid a price in her standing with Belos, and she’s suffering the curse she put on her sister. She’s not dead or in the hands of Belos, but she has had a massive serving of humble pie. The three things she prized most were making it up to Eda, her position as head of the emperor coven and her magical ability. She’s lost two of the three and the other one will be a long uphill battle. It was by sharing the curse on herself she showed remorse and desire to make things right, important steps of a redemption arc.

Interesting takes on a lot of show that I agree with except for Lilith. I fucking love Lilith's character and especially her relationship with her sister. Lilith is one of those characters that was never meant to be more than a side character providing story for one of the mains, but by the end of the season the way we as the audience have our point of view shift is phenomenal! I know so many sibling relationships that are just like Eda and Lilith's and if they had the chance they might've done something fucked like the curse or did something equal messed up and were filled with regret. If there is anything we learn about Lilith it's that she's basically spent the majority of the time she's been in the Emperor's Coven trying to save her sister from her mistake. I think one of the things I'm looking forward to the most with season 2 is watching Eda and Lilith be together again and with everything that happened at the end of the finale I can only see them both becoming more intriguing and developed characters.

I think my biggest problem with the show is that the principle was so willing to let Luz learn multiple magics. Such a deep cultural taboo seems like it would take a LOT more than one (1) cool thing and a "please". Other than that, I find it very enjoyable!
@Cecebookworm073 жыл бұрын
I think he wanted to let them, but he also knew he couldn’t defy the emperor. He was only willing to rebel when Luz and the other detention students proved that use of multiple types of magic COULD be incredibly helpful. He did want Eda to be able to learn multiple tracks, after all.

@SmackyduhFrog3 жыл бұрын
I see where you're coming from, but I kinda interpreted it in a different way. The taboo seems to mostly apply to covenless witches, and most people also don't seem to care about it all that much given how freely Eda can walk around without being bothered by regular people. The Emperor's Coven is a coven that allows the use of all types of magic. Students in witch school seem to be allowed to switch to different coven tracks as they wish even prior to the rule change (like with Willow). It seemed to me that the students aren't really considered true witches by the law, so they don't have to choose their legally official coven until they graduate. Say a student wants to join the Emperor's Coven when they graduate. Prior to the rule change, they're only proficient in one type of magic, but if they join they now have the freedom to use any type of magic, most of which they're not proficient in. If legally questioned, the principle could justify the change as "students with mixed-coven tracks can either join the Emperor's Coven or choose a single coven when they graduate." Considering this, it makes less sense to me that the rule was set in the first place. Thank you for coming to my ted talk

She-Ra reboot is trash. Owl House and to an extent Steven Universe are fine because they're wholey original. I know the original She-Ra sucked, but don't go blackwashing and giving all the characters tumblr-esque redesigns and making the main female lead not even look female because that is racist, sexist, and wrong, not "empowering.". I'm not saying this is because she doesn't have boobs, I'm saying this because she has a very masculine face and body structure. This implies that women can't be strong without being manly, which is completly false. Most anime along with some western cartoons understand that women can be sexy and feminine while also being strong and empowering, but most western cartoons instead try to make "strong female characters" who are basically just men but female. Ezra from Fairy Tale is a great example of a strong, empowering, yet sexy and feminine female character. Pyra from Xenoblade too. But because of all the millenial Tumblr SJWs joining the animation scene, western cartoons are mostly garbage and if they're actually good like the Owl House they'll probably have a lot of gay characters in the spotlight or something and not make those relationships subtle at all.

I’m glad y’all finally talked about Owl House!! I only wish you didn’t constantly bring up/compare it to Gravity Falls almost exclusively. It’s important to compare and contrast, but it almost felt like you were implying at points that “it’s no Gravity Falls, but it’s still cool.” Also mentioning Dana Terrace’s connection to Alex Hirsch along with the constant parallels to GF being made makes it feel like it exclusively highlights how Hirsch’s show influenced TOH, and takes away from Terrace’s own accomplishments. Regardless, I still loved hearing your thoughts on the show’s plot and its characters. I agree that Lilith’s arc towards the end was a bit rushed, even if I do think that the backstory as for *why* she cursed Eda was decent enough. I think the best part about this show is the support that the creator Dana Terrace and the fanbase have for one another, working together against Disney to try to make sure that they get their way with the lesbian plotline between Luz and Amity. Partially because it's like a comfort hobby that they're sharing with one another during the pandemic, and I find that to be respectful and extremely wholesome. And I'm going to miss that when the show ends next year with the three specials.
@honzasenbauer6122 жыл бұрын
I think the reason why fanbase and Dana are working together on Lumity is because of how good it is written and how well it represents. I fucking hate most gay characters in TV shows and Movies because thats all they ever talk about, and its their whole personality. Being gay. But when its done good like Lumity, you don't even click they are gay, because the relationship is just that, a relationship with the added detail of them being gay. And its also that they actually fit one another, and they have a good chemistry. This represents gay couples really well and its fun to watch. Its not in your face, just there and intergraded. 10/10 couple Oh yea forgot to add, that they have a healthy comunication with one another. Misinterpretation is treated as a fun moment that they will laugh about in the end, when there is a problem, they talk it out instead of fighting and bring jelaous and stuff like that. I love this couple even more because of that.

I can see why Disney wouldnt have gone with the gay charaters, because we live in a world wheres countrys that are divided amongst themselves on the topics, so much that they cant deside a single flavor of ice cream!

The Lumity content aside, it also revisited Luz and her relationship with her mother, not to mention introducing that someone has been sending letters to her in Luz’s name. That’s two directions for season two, Luz being completely cut off (and summer’s end being a ticking clock if a new portal isn’t used) and whoever is behind the letters. That kind of deception isn’t in Edna’s character.

I absolutely love this show! The representation of Luz being the main character gives me so much joy, growing up in a hispanic household with only my mom- its kind of funny how much I relate to Luz, I hardly see people mentioning this but I just had to point it out. I have such high hopes for the show as it continues.

So you're a nerd? (Since you relate with Liz so much, but her being Hispanic and having no dad is a very minor/insignificant part of her character so far.)

I really enjoy The Owl House, to me it is about on the same level of quality as the stronger parts of SVTFOE and the weaker episodes of Ducktales 2017. I do not like one thing about the show though, people acting like Lumity is the only reason that it is good (and some forgettable characters here and there). In the show Lumity is such a well made set up and well made love story, but people act as if it is the sole reason the show is good, not acknowledging how great of a job the animators did in so many scenes, the great comedy, and the score. This is overall one of the single best cartoons currently on right now, and I think this show is just continuing Disney's great run of cartoons.

I recommend Its Rebecca Rose’s videos on the series. Even beyond the Lumity stuff she does a lot of consideration for the show as a whole

I’ve met people like that, but it’s usually more that they’re excited about a well written lgbt relationship being put into an amazing show. They usually don’t not recognise the rest they’re just super happy they have representation finally.
@KingBobXVI3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, all the talk of LGBT+ representation and inclusivity, the fact that the main character is a Latina whos main character trait isn't "being Latina" is great and well deserved, but the focus on that detracts from just how good every single other aspect of the show is. Not to say those things aren't great or don't deserve praise - they do - but I just wonder how many people have written off watching it because they assume from the response that it's "pandering".
@joshuagleeson47763 жыл бұрын
This is pretty much how I think as well. It's honestly sad that so many of the show's great qualities are overshadowed by the discussion surrounding representation. I'm all for well implemented representation in media, and I'm glad TOH is providing that. But I feel like the reputation might turn people away because they think it's preachy or some shit, considering so much of the discussion around this show is emphasising the LGBTQ+ aspects above all else.
