My argument for season 1 of Amphibia isn’t necessarily that all of those episodes endear you to the characters, but that having that many episodes about Anne learning lessons and helping the people in Wartwood makes the season finale, when the whole town rallies behind Anne as their hero, feel much more believable. You can point out individual characters and remember how Anne helped them. That’s just my take though

Take Steven universe as the inverse of this. There were tons of episodes where steven was intetacting with the people of beach city...but in the end it was more or less pointless.

ooh, hadn’t thought about that. Very true, all of the Beach City stuff was completely irrelevant to the finale

@@feldwebeljackrum6272 Season 1 actually did this rather properly if you watch Jailbreak.... But yeah Amphibia's handling of the townies seems more similar to how the Kirby anime handled its townies in the finale.... Both shows have the townsfolk help take down a major evil. In Kirby anime it's Nightmare.

I will always go to bat for Amphibia's "filler" episodes. Those episodes are far too funny and far too character establishing to be skipped. They might not be "plot relevant" but they are "world relevant". I care about the people of Wartwood more then I ever cared about the residents of Beach City, Gravity Falls or the Boiling Isles. Give me One-Eyed Wally or give me death.

You've gotta appreciate _Amphibia's_ disturbingly realistic portrayal of toxic friendships, and the arc Anne and Sasha go through of realizing it's toxic and wanting to fix it.
@jbcatz5
@jbcatz5 2 жыл бұрын
As well as how superficial their friendship with Marcy really is, taking her presence for granted without understanding her as a person. It really hits hard when Marcy knows the Anne and Sasha in front of her are fake because they take such an interest in questing with her within the Core Matrix like environment.
@mackielunkey2205

What I also love about it is that their relationship isn’t considered bad just because of toxic elements. It’s a human relationship, good AND bad.

Mackie Lunkey It’s the three characters taking responsibility for where they went wrong, Sasha even rejects a leadership position in the rebellion when Anne gets back because she’s afraid of what power may do to her. It’s a shame the show didn’t explore Sasha’s home life in any detail, just that her parents were separated by the time of the Christmas episode.

@@jbcatz5 I think it's a shame too! I think that's why she's so controlling in life, because she wants some sort of it. I feel that her bisexuality is a factor too, since she's shown to be closeted, and to me, probably afraid that people will reject her if she reveals it. I think I'm reading too much into it though.
@jbcatz5

Mackie Lunkey If 3A had an episode where Anne looked into contacting the Waybrights and the Wus it could have given some pathos to fact she made it home but their daughters didn’t and better lead into the close out of the Christmas episode.

I think the idea with The Collector now being the main threat is the fact that you DON'T know what he's going to do. A literal child being given godlike powers who's introduced by one-shotting the main antagonist, moving the moon with a finger swipe, and then begins to terraform the Isles all because they want to play a game. While I would've preferred Belos sticking as the main threat for Season 3 (even though he's definitely not dead) I won't say the Collector twist is "pedestrian" and I kinda see the potential with it. Banger season tho.

Well not knowing a villain's motivations is... well... it poorly establishes stakes. In the context of the audience's engagement/interaction with a story, it's much more captivating to watch a villain with a specific goal in mind, and then see the steps he takes in achieving that goal. For example, "Oh crap, Thanos got another infinity stone. Two more and he'll be able to kill half of all life." That's the subconscious thought the audience of Infinity War is thinking. However, if some guy named Thanos shows up, and starts collecting these rocks, but doesn't explain why... well, why should we (the audience) care? Sure, the writer can say he's gonna do something bad with those stones, but that's not as interesting as if we actually know what he is going to do. Belos was threatening/interesting because we knew what he was going to do. The Collector just showed up, effectively said, "Look I'm the bad guy now." without explaining why they're more interesting/threatening than Belos.
@Cartoonshi
@Cartoonshi 2 жыл бұрын
@@folkloric3059 I understand that and agree to an extent. I still prefer Belos as a villain and if the show was given enough time I would've liked it if this scene wasn't as rushed (because it defintiely is, despite being good). That said, I don't think The Collector poorly establishes the stakes, I think they're pretty clear: He's going to end up turning the Isles upside down and wreaking havoc because he's a child and thinks its all a game. I think that's a good idea for a villain, but I agree there needed to be more than that if they wanted everyone to be on board with him game ending Belos in half a second. Still curious to how it'll play out.

It's also important to note that The Owl House was cut short by Disney, so it's understandable how rushed the collector felt, as they had to do damage control after the cancellations. If Amphibia was cut like TOH was, True Colors probably would have been rushed in a similar way to TOH. My guess is that The Core would have made an appearance.

I disagree that the Collector is "less threatening" than Belos just because we haven't seen him hurt anyone yet. I mean, he freely gave Belos the draining spell in the first place. Yes, it was in order to free himself, but he openly spoke about how fun he thought it would be to see everyone die horribly. Unlike Belos who simply had an evil goal that he strove for, the Collector is a sadistic god who sees the world as his toychest, and he seems to enjoy breaking his toys.

I don't think it's fair to cite the reduction of season 3 as a justification for subpar writing (not to say the Owl House is subpar, it isn't.) @damkylan3
@damkylan3 2 жыл бұрын
Luz and King both. Luz for those reasons, and King because he's likely about to learn what it's like to be a despotic overlord over innocent people like he always wanted before he matured. And it's ultimately because of Collector that the Owl Beast came to inhabit Eda, even if Lilith's role can't be understated. Point being, he has a connection to all three mains.
@DLxxx
@DLxxx 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but it felt like Belos worked as a better foil and enemy for Luz. They were both humans who stuck to their principles to save the people they cared about (for Luz it was her friends and family, and for Belos it was humanity), but one grew up in an era of cruel bigotry and close mindedness. And overall, Belos was just more complex and thematically appropriate for a show about witches, status, and societal issues.
@vedji1857

Luz’s escapism through her imagination and witch fantasy reflects the collector; they both just wanna have fun but are unaware of the consequences. @@camarvan except... no??? Can you explain how belos is unaware of consequences? Because the show clearly shows that he is a master of knowing consequences and changing them. How does he reflect luz in her “just wanted to have fun” sort of way? I used to have a feeling that the Collector didn't thematically tie into the show. But now I see how he does. You were saying how the heroes of the show embrace "wild magic" and "expressing who you are". Well, the Collector is technically doing *exactly* that, but he's being completely irresponsible; you might even say he's being *wild* with his *magic*. While Luz learned to hone her powers to help those around her, the Collector only uses them for completely selfish purposes. In a sense, Belos was right about magic; while hurting innocent witches and demons isn't the answer, there are in fact beings who will use their power to hurt others, like the Collector. Even if he isn't aware what he's doing is wrong, even if he isn't technically evil, he's abusing his abilities to uproot peoples' lives. In a way, both Belos and the Collector are foils to Luz. Luz wants to embrace her magic to help others and express herself, Belos wants to stop anyone from having such power, and the Collector just uses the power for his own gain with no regard for anyone.

I heavily disagree that the collector is not as horrifying, the fact that they're so vague and have moral-ambiguity with god-like powers makes them potentially scary! I think the way Belos was splat like a damn fly cause it completely shut down how terrifying he is an antagonist only to be treated as pathetic when he gets one shot by a cHILD. Also because of how obsessed he is with his own goals and fucked up morals and betraying anyone no matter how loyal they are to him, it ultimately becomes his downfall- it makes him downright stupid in fact especially betraying a godly child, and I love it. Although I definitely agree how many things in this 2B part of the season felt rushed- I also don't get the chemistry of Hunter and Willow at all; absolutely not the crew's fault. I don't think it's fair to compare this show to Amphibia, since that show had all the time and creative freedom without getting abruptly cancelled. Disney really threw The Owl House under the bus all because of not "fitting the Disney brand" which pisses me off still to this day, so much build-up in plot and fun mundane episodes could've been made.

I mean, okay this is probably not the same for all Huntlow shippers, but for me, here’s why I like the idea of Huntlow: You got two individuals who throughout their lives has dealt with being treated differently because of their lack of magic. Yes, Willow does have magic and can use it unlike Hunter, but she had a rough start and it caused her to be bullied for years with the nickname “Half-a-witch Willow”. Hunter while we don’t get to see much of him struggling due to not having magic or be treated unfairly(probably because of the show’s cancellation/shortening), but knowing how Hunter work hard as the Golden Guard and how a lot of EC members backstab each other a lot, I can see Hunter being look down upon or bullied by any EC members for them thinking someone who lacks magic doesn’t deserve the GG title. Another thing is these two have a great friendship with Willow giving Hunter validation for his skills in a genuine way(not a manipulative way like Belos by making him endanger himself) and vice versa with Hunter helping improve Willow’s confidence(helping her with her flyer derby team and even giving her a respectable title like Captain). Bonus: Since Hunter is a nerd for wild magic we seen, I can totally see him and Willow talking about history of Plant magic for hours. Though I see why a lot of people don’t ship it or just like them as friends, maybe if the show wasn’t shorten we would’ve gotten a better development for this ship, but hey we’ll take what we’ll get and agree to disagree on feelings towards this ship.

Here's how I think of it. Amphibia is a 6-hour potluck lunch. Everybody who comes first brings the mediocre stuff like the veggie plates and the coleslaw with too much mayonnaise, but if you wait around long enough, more guests start showing up with the homemade pizza and the weird but surprisingly awesome family recipes and the huge tinfoil trays of the best pasta you've ever had in your life. You just need to have a little patience and enjoy the party. (Also, coleslaw is delicious, fuck you) The Owl House is a gourmet meal at a Michelin Star restaurant, but here's the catch: you get 15 minutes to eat everything. So you shovel in the salad and burn yourself on the soup and stuff your face with ribeye steak, only for the waiter to come by and snatch away your molten chocolate lava cake while it's still dripping. And then you get shoved out the door and told that they're closing forever at noon the next day. Can't blame the chefs; you just wish you'd been there three hours earlier.

I'm honestly just really impressed with what the Owl House managed to do with Hunter. Like, he got a genuinely incredibly compelling character arc with themes of child abuse and the effect that growing up in a cult has had on his development, he's goofy at times but not incompetent, and whenever he has a really cheesy line, you can tell it's the CHARACTER trying too hard and not the SHOW. He's got really bad mental health issues, but they're written in a very realistic way, meaning they don't turn him into an evil bad guy or a wet towel when they come to the forefront. He's got so much character and lore dedicated to him that he's started feeling like a secondary protagonist to Luz, and he only appears in like eight episodes. I also really appreciate that they paired him with Gus and Willow instead of with Luz. Him and Luz have a really fun dynamic, don't get me wrong, and the moments they have together are great, but making Hunter part of the B-Team means the Owl House Gang can continue growing as a family unit without absorbing ANOTHER bad-guy-who-got-booted-from-the-Emperor's-Coven into the mix, it gives Gus especially a lot more compelling character moments, AND it allows the show to both address Hunter's trauma and let him be an actual kid. And yeah, you can definitely feel the effects of the cancellation. I would have loved to see more of him as an actual villain, the relationship with him, Gus and Willow is mostly built up off-screen, and there's a lot of character building between him and Darius that we never got to see, but as with most things about the Owl House, the Mouse's decisions meant a lot of cut content.

I actually think the Collector is a perfect encapsulation of the show's themes, because he's basically the worst-case scenario of what Luz could have become if she hadn't found the structure and connections she did in the Isles, minus the godlike power. Much like how she used to be, he's just a kid who has no comprehension of how his fun might hurt others, but taken to the extreme, and he's always on about new friends to play with, which Luz was lucky enough to find. And he was made to endure consequences in the form of imprisonment for his actions, which is kind of what Luz felt about her consequences in the beginning, but again, much more extreme. And it's not just Luz. Nearly every character in the show has been an outsider in some way, but grew and developed through forming special connections with people. Even Belos was an outsider, but his is the allotted dark twist on the concept by him forming connections purely out of manipulation and convenience to him. But Collector has never had those connections and still doesn't. He likes King, but he doesn't know that King has manipulated him just like Belos did, and isn't really his friend. Not at the moment, anyway. I like to think he'll have that moment of realizing nobody wants to be his friend, which will either crush him, or massively piss him off. Depending on how they intend to deal with his threat.

I adore everything about Amphibia personally. I love how season 1 took its time to flesh out the world and the people of Wartwood to make you care, how it sets up the pieces of Sasha's character. It hints at and lays the foundations for everything in season two, even if it's subtle. Having Anne and Sprig be the focus of development really felt nice, seeing her begin to come into her own in Amphibia. To love herself and stand up for what she believes and and/or is right. Hop pop is Hop pop. And overall I loved the feel of it, season one gives that vibe of wonder and amazement yet intrigue and mystery of the world, helping feel on the same page as Anne. And so when season two kicks off, we're just as amazed by the rest of this world as they are. Not gonna talk about season 2, I'd be here for an hour. I really liked season 3 a lot, loved it even, and thought what we got was really good, but I'd be lying I said that they weren't things I wish we had gotten but didn't. Oh well. Not many mediums exist when you can look at an entire community of 10+ people and know their names, personalities and lives and end up liking and loving all of them. Season 1 set all that up showing Anne change every episode and learning to get along with every member. Season 2 expanded upon the world and showed the variety of cultures there are along with deepening our bonds with Anne, Sasha and Marcy. And season 3 brought all the characters together and allowed for a sense of meaning to all the strife that had occurred through the show. I like the owl house, but man did this show do a lot for me.

Amphibia is my personal favorite cartoon because it's the one I see myself in the most. The story is amazing (especially in season 2), the world is creative, and the tone expertly balances humor and drama, but above all, I feel like I really got to grow with these characters. I was about the age Anne was when I started watching, and had problems really similar to hers. A bit selfish, a pushover, not having many great friends, and generally unambitious and not knowing what I wanted to do with my life. As I got to watch Anne grow with the people around her, improving the lives of everyone she met, repairing her past damaged relationships, and her overall growth as an individual, I saw myself becoming a better person in the process. I made much better friends in the following years, which helped me gain much more confidence and self love, which pushed me to help my community and family in any way I could. It even made me think about my future, wanting to go into animation myself so that I could make a show like Amphibia, the one that inspired me the most. This show isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, and I can see why, and there are valid criticisms of this show. But none of that really matters to me, because it might be the single work of fiction that has changed me the most as an individual. Amphibia made me a better person, and I felt like I truly belonged in my community as much as I connected with Anne and her frog family. Saying goodbye to Amphibia was like saying goodbye to a part of my childhood, and it was hard. But I'm eternally grateful for what this show means to me and so many people, and I hope this show, among others, continue to inspire other people to be better. Thanks, Amphibia. I'll miss you

But having an elite task force that specialize in those schools of magic along with a militia to protect against legitimate threats to people living on the isles? Probably not an awful idea. After all, who _knows_ if other entities like the Collector exist in their world. And even if there aren't, there _is_ an entire civilization of Titan Hunters that probably aren't going to be too keen about King, so I doubt they're gonna look kindly upon the Isles if he's living there.

Considering how much fans of the show adore the ending and the knowledge that the collector was captured by kings father (the growl during echoes of the past was probably the fight between him and the collector, ending in his death and the collectors capture), I would not call the finale pedestrian by any means. Belos is still a threat after that bit of him went with hunter, the collector obviously has a ton of power and little maturity so the threat is already large without them showing it outright, leaving it to the imagination as to what they can and will do, and the coven witches might still be alive but are now weakened with less power because of being drained so much already. I respect your opinion on the episode but I wouldn’t call it pedestrian like that, I feel like it undercuts the work this team put into the story moving forward. One thing about season 3 that really set me off on the wrong foot with it, was that immediately after coming through the portal, Anne was like "Marcy's alive, I know it". WE have that information. We saw the teaser intro where Marcy is being kept alive in the tank. We know that Disney wouldn't just let them kill a kid that way with impunity. But that's all metatextual. All Anne saw was her friend get stabbed very violently through some incredibly vital organs and then collapse in a heap. Whether or not it's actually allowed to happen, Anne should *think* Marcy was killed.

Fair enough. I had the same mixed reaction to that line as well. Obviously we as the audience were never actually expected to believe Marcy was dead, but Anne doesn't have the context we have (to her, this is very much REAL). That said, I can still buy Anne having this mix of denial and optimism that could prompt her to say otherwise. I guess it’s more like.. a missed opportunity than anything else.

It's not framed as denial, no attempts were made to get Anne to come to terms with it or make any sort of plot point out of it. No, that line was just thrown in so the Disney censors could tell concerned parents "of course we didn't kill a child in this cartoon". That's the only reason for it being there, and it honestly takes the fire out of what made True Colors such a spectacular episode.

Yeah, I’ll agree, King’s Tide fell flat at some points. I am personally going to believe that an episode like Hollow Mind was SUPPOSED to be season 2’s finale, and Edge of the World would have been one of the first few episodes of season 3, and Kings Tide would have been the finale for 3A, leaving Luz and the gang to have time on Earth, but when a specific mouse cut the show short, they decided to have Kings Tide be Season 2’s finale. So yeah, like with any complaint about the Owl House, I’m blaming it on Disney

I mean, I suppose it's possible, but much like how Season 1's episode titles and secret codes all correspond to Eda, Season 2's all correspond to King. So I feel like the original idea was Season 1= Eda, Season 2= King, and Season 3= Luz, the main trio. And "King's Tide" just seems like the logical end point within that framework. I feel like Season 2 probably ended as it was meant to. I think if we had gotten Season 2 exactly as we did, and ALSO knew that we were getting a full Season 3, nobody would be saying any element of it feels rushed, because we'd have the security of knowing there's tons of content to come. But we're thinking about it in terms of how they're going to wrap everything up in a much more condensed season.

The thing with the Collector is that he does not understand the difference between playing and harming others. He was full out about to kill the main gang but didn't understand the harm he was about to do as he saw it as a game to play. Almost everyone on the boiling isles is exhausted and injured and I doubt King is going to be able to convince that many scared and confused witches just to go along with a game, especially since ya know, some of those people's kids are gone and they have no idea where they are or if they could be alive. The Collector is not going to understand why these people won't play even if King tried to explain as King promised they would all play and need lots of people to, he's going to be upset and possibly felt like King lied to him or broke his promise and with all these factors and him not understanding that he can harm people and he does v.s just playing, I don't think it'll be pretty for anyone.

I think my main criticism of amphibia Season 3 is that it has a ton of tonal whiplash. Anne just saw one of her closest friends get impaled and probably die, but the very next scene has her get excited about having internet back and she just shrugs it off as "No, Marcy is OK, she has to be". You have really dark episodes like Olivia & Yunan, where a child gets her body possessed by a hivemind while she screams in pain; but then later on you have an episode whose runtime is mostly just low hanging gross-out humour. I wish that this late into the show, where they have to wrap things up, they'd settle for one tone or the other instead of having both kinds of episodes. At least they completely nailed this in the final episodes though, no complaints there

I personally would disagree. I think TOH has done impressively well at handling relationships, including dysfunctional ones. For instance, Alador wasn't forgiven by Amity right away, because an apology wasn't enough to make up for how he'd neglected his kids. Amity made it clear that she had boundaries that he to respect, and that he wouldn't earn her trust back unless he actually continued to do better after he apologized. (Admittedly this was resolved a little too quickly in the finale, but I'm assuming that was because of the cut time.) It's important to remember that this is a kids' show, and that the messaging in it has to be beneficial for an impressionable audience. I think it's a lot healthier to teach kids that it's okay to not forgive someone who's been genuinely awful to you, and that not everyone is redeemable. Odalia getting a redemption arc feels like it would send the message that abusers can be redeemed, which really isn't always the case. Sometimes people are just bad people even if you're related to them, and someone doesn't have to be a comically evil villain (like Belos) to be someone you don't want in your life. Amity specifically saying she'll never talk to Odalia again felt more thematically in line with the rest of the show. Maybe I'm just overthinking it, but TOH also handled other similar topics. Eda's relationship with her mother comes to mind. I was honestly surprised to see any show covering the difficulty of relatives trying to "cure" your disability through alternative medicine without your input, but TOH handled that really well.

Rewatching the collector scenes (as well as my love of the Fey in D&D) showed me what a threat the collector is. They are a force of nature with the personality of a child who always wants to play. The goals are as follows 1). Play games and have fun forever Getting locked away directly goes against the collector’s goal here. I don’t think he hates Titans either, he says “you look like that bully who put me in here, no WAY are you his little Titan BABY? I always wanted to play with you! But your dumb pops hid you” Wanting to play with baby king and getting locked away was a direct consequence of his actions. And look at the first thing he does when released, stops the fight, admonished Belos, says he ain’t mad, and asks if he wants to play a game. Belos getting splattered was the consequence of not releasing the Collector (you pinky swore!) The collector has too much power than any child should have, them playing around visibly alters the geography of the land they exist in.

Another reason for the filler episodes in Amphibia is to literally make Disney happy. Disney prefers that shows aired on Disney Channel are able to be watched with no prior context or episodes. This is because so the kids can hop on any moment of the show and still be able to enjoy as well as skip any episodes they want and don't lose anything. Serialized shows are often put into Disney plus. One of the reasons The Owl House got cancelled is because of its serialized nature, while watching the first season i accidentally shipped the 4 episode "The entruder" therefore I was super confused as to when Luz had learned the light glyph. A kid who doesn't care about continuity will be very confused by what's happening because they didn't watched everything (especially in season 2) Amphibia took a more secure path with multiple filler episodes between plot to insure it's survivability and, in return, was able to tell it's full story.

I heard everyone saying that luz would want to stay bc of her gf so i think thats why dana put a situation where luz and amity are still together, whether shes in the human world or not. Thats how luz will have to ultimately chose to go her own path on if she REALLY wants to stay in the human world or not, not having amity be in a factor in luz’s ultimate decision to return but bc she actually really likes the boiling isles. For me, i feel like the Collector kinda parallels s1e1 Luz. Before she showed up on the Isles, her forms of genuine play also could and did hurt people, the snakes being the best example. What helped Luz wasn’t being locked away in that summer camp (like the Collector was, in the pokeball), but finding people who valued who she was and her freedom and expression and helped/let her learn and grow into herself as a person that now would do anything at any risk to protect the people she loves. Still reckless, but so so different-she’s now actively connected to the world around her and to the people in it, and her empathy has developed as much as Eda’s was unearthed, too-because people like Eda made a real effort to connect with her as well. She has so many connections where she just didn’t before-like the Collector doesn’t have now either. She’s a kid, and she’s transformed so much-I kinda wonder if the same will be true with the Collector, too, if he’s genuinely an OP kid and not actively cruel for cruelty’s sake. TOH Spoilers: Hearing your thoughts on TOH's ending really helped me figure out my thoughts. When I watched it I loved it, had cute moments, cool moments, and I love the concept of the Collector. He's what Luz was, an overactive kid who should have grown out of their fantasies by now. But while Luz was able to realize over-the-top fun and fantasy weren't all real, but that she could still indulge in the magic. The Collector only had devout followers that worshipped them, an empty promise to keep them patient and all the time in the world to fantasize about anything and everything. But I do agree build-up could have been MUCH better and Belos getting splatted like a bug worries me a lot. I can only see three ways out for him, becoming a joke i.e. teaming with the demon hunter from Yesterday's Lie. Helping the main team back to the BI, which feels really cheap on paper because of the hatred and no room for redemption. Or ending up as a powerless antagonist like a sneering devil on the Luz's shoulder, which could work. I have faith in the team to end this show well, and there are plenty more ways Belos could go that I haven't had the brain power to come up with. Very solid video and criticisms.

Amphibia is such an incredible show! It’s been an emotional rollercoaster watching it come to an end. The topic of toxic friendships really hits close to home for me, and I really just saw myself in Anne, and I just love when I can relate to the main character like that.

Amphibia is to me what something like Shrek 2 or Encanto is to James. It's a really quotable and fun comedy with surprisingly strong dramatic moments and mature themes. I can't gush enough how much this show means to me and how it helped me during a period of my life, and my appreciation for it only grew with time.

I feel like because The Owl House game was left ambigous for the audience, that leaves so many possibilities for what a child with godlike powers can do. It could be (a) a DnD version where King could tell stories to appease the Collector and everyone are game pieces, b) a Wandavision scenario were everyone is in a trance or something or c)a Mabeland world where everyone can imagine what they want then Belos could return and have his full form

@@flamingbanana5831 oh no, of course not. both shows were made for whose ever eyes met it, there is no discretion or redundancy between the gender viewing the series. however, both shows revolve around a female protagonist but obviously is universally watched by anyone who wishes to!

I really liked the things you hate about the collector, that they're a god figure that now no one can stop and we are unsure of his motivations or who he is makes him way more scary and intriguing
