Hi, Clement! I would like to hear about your experience with technical stack at Google or Facebook. For example, what kinds of approximate problems were you solving, description of tasks you were getting, how long did it take for a feature you built to get into production on average, how much unit testing or integration testing did you doo, etc. I would love to hear the technical side of your journey.
@kristjanwashere4 жыл бұрын
I just wanted to put in a counter point. I've heard from interviewers at some really popular start ups/ tech companies that applicants that only (I stress only) worked at a FAANG company would often fail their interviews because they lack the experience of building a full product from the ground up, as well as taking for granted all these really nice technical safeguards available to them at these FAANG companies that you would not have outside of them. While Clement doesn't say "why you should only join google as soon as you get out of college as a new grad", I feel like a lot of the viewers are college students or younger that will interpret this video as basically "faang is king, there are no downsides, because of the brand and street cred". I have to stress again Clement didnt say that, but I can only guess what I feel a ton of these viewers are gonna interpret this as. If you want to be the best software engineer, perhaps join FAANG later in your life while you spend your early life in smaller companies where you are more likely to be building your products from the ground up with less assistance and safeguarding internal tools, which accelerates the learning curve.
@kristjanwashere4 жыл бұрын
R Hathway there are bad engineers at any company, even if it’s FAANG, just because you studied algos and got lucky to get questions you already solved to pass the interviews, doesn’t make you a good engineer, or imply you have a “high iq”

5:50 a big argument of this though is so they keep you in the office. If they offer breakfast you'll get in earlier. If they offer dinner you will stay a bit later. If they offer an on site gym you might work a little longer to then go to the gym. if they offer "sleeping pods" you may go straight to the officer after a flight. Nothing is free in life - especially when shareholders are involved. There is a reason for these perks.

You should definitely discuss more about the software engineers working in machine learning. Its a branch not much discussed by you and the information regarding how to become a machine learning engineer is very scarce. Since you have a degree in maths you could discuss this topic very accurately including the requirements too. And keep up the great work brother.
@Anotherwhitemage4 жыл бұрын
TBH, you become a ML engineer the same way you become any type of specialized engineer. you do projects connected to the field you want to work at, and get exp in, and then apply for positions that are fine with the work you already put into that field, to warrant you working in that field for them. once you are getting paid for it, it's much easier to keep the traction ball rolling - and most sensible companies will give you a junior level role based on projects you do at home.
@syedfaizanahmed66634 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I wanted to get started as an ML engineer but I am struggling. There are no credible sources and someone like Clemente in this field or certainly in KZbin is not there. So any good sources on how to get into FANG companies as a ML engineer in the detail in which Clemente explains would be great.

Well, obviously something related to computer science, something involving a lot of programming and algorithms. Or, if you prefer, something more related to hardware. Math is also valuable as it is the foundation of AI and Data Science. But you don't even need to study. You can be a self taught software engineer. Just learn programming, do some projects (like a Game which involves not only programming but a lot of creativity and logic) and you have good chances. I started with web development. HTML/CSS/JS and quickly went over React.js to code a game. Later you can progress. How many hours? You can't generalize. Put in as much work as you can as long as it's fun to you. I'd say 6 months of dedicated practice would make you a good candidate.

My problem with FANG is the district lack of feedback, communication and overall "respect" I feel during the interview process. From the very beginning, almost all FANG will not respond to you if you don't pass the initial sift. If they do bother to reply, they do not give you anything other than a generic "someone else was more suitable" email. I have had 1 instance (from around 50 or so applications) from FANG (Facebook) where the recruiter reached out to me with a personal reason as to why I didnt get it. If you pass this sift, but get rejected later, you will get a generic someone else is better email + a response saying they cant give any feedback as to why. Coupled with that, you often need to wait 6-12 months again to apply. The least they can do is provide a reason for the rejection if someone has put in weeks/months into the process. I understand FANG get a lot of applications per role, and unfortunately can treat candidates like this, but I think if the shoe was on the other foot they wouldnt appreciate it. I have rejected a FANG company before and they wanted to know why - I didn't say "sorry Im legally not able to tell you". After an unsuccessful interview I was sent a feedback form asking how the interview was. They want feedback on them, but wont give it on candidates - seems very hypocritical. If at any point during the interview I sent them a generic email saying "Im sorry but I am no longer considering you. PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL" I think I would be blacklisted. This double standard I think puts a lot of people off of FANG. Its rude, unnecessary and hypocritical. Once you're in it seems great, but they need to have a bit more compassion towards people applying.

Being a Senior Engineer in middle America I do believe most Engineers would like to work at a FANG company but sadly most of us will not have the opportunity. Best we can do is put our best foot forward and hope that's enough to get us noticed. That being said, most people you meet pretty much just clock their 8 hours and collect their check. That's not to say they aren't putting in a good effort but probably not getting enough experience, the 10,000 hours as Malcolm Gladwell likes to say, in order to ever reach that level.

Hi I'm new here. So far I like your Channel. Have you ever consider creating a development tutorial? Cheers!

Hey CLEM! I'm sure you'd have acquaintances in noice non-FAANG companies, especially Palantir, Jane Street, etc. Could you prepare a video with their help answering questions similar to the ones you answer in this video? Thanks! - BTWIfYourePreparingForCodingInterviews

You're not a real software engineer until you've worked at Google or Facebook. It's debatable whether you're even a human being before then.

I want to ask, if I am software engineer and I want to work at Google or Facebook. Is it hard for me to go and work at Google or Facebook or it is just if I want to work at Google or Facebook I can easily.

What about polotical bias and prejudice? Is it safe to be christian/conservativ there? In other words can you, at google, apart of using your brain efficiently for software engineering, use it efficiently for other things or yr not aloud to, otherwise you go bye bye (but not to gulag...yet)?
