I worked at Facebook (Meta) for 6 months, and now working at Google My two cents: 1. Facebook's bootcamp >> Google's team matching 2. Facebook's food = Google's food 3. Facebook's 401k(100%) and health insurance > Google's 401k(50%) and health insurance 4. Facebook's WLB < Google's WLB 5. Facebook’s internal tools > Google’s internal tools

Hey Clement. I just saw a video about what fang engineers do after work in Silicon Valley and most of them just go home and watch Netflix because "there's nothing to do in silicon valley". Do you find that to be the case with the other FANG offices in places like Washington, New York etc ?
@clem4 жыл бұрын
I think that depends a lot on the individual. There are _some_ things to do in Silicon Valley, like rock climbing, going to the gym, going to restaurants, etc.. Admittedly, in a location like New York City, there are a lot more conventional "things to do" and perhaps more options for them.

@JerryLuo624 жыл бұрын
@@canyounot4665 Yeah, the truth is you can do anything you want outside of your work hours, which are for the most part pretty chill and not anywhere near other fields like consulting or finance. That being said, is Silicon Valley boring? Yeah, sort of, it's a suburb and doesn't have any nightlife. But there's still great outdoors stuff, and great food. Also, if you're at a big company, you'll find lots of things to do like happy hour with other people at your company as well as lots of sports leagues like volleyball or soccer or basketball.
@canyounot46654 жыл бұрын
Jerry Luo god forbid you live in Ohio or Kentucky like I did so you can experience a city that literally offers nothing. If you think a city with multiple adjacent cities with a cumulative population in the order of the millions is boring and then it’s just you my dude, you are boring, you struggle with socializing. “Doesn’t offer any night life” LOL yea hate to break it to you my dude, no one just wants to invite you anywhere (maybe cause you are boring?? Google more friendly for beginners, Facebook for experienced people willing to work 10 hours + in some teams, those are the well known things, lets watch and see what you think
@drmathochist062 жыл бұрын
To speak back about team-matching process: working with the team in bootcamp is nice, but there are many systemic issues on teams that you may not notice until you've been there for months, by which point it's too late. In practice it only allows you to weed out the biggest red flags, which Google's process also allows. As to the stress of that team-matching phase, I'm sorry your recruiter didn't tell you (like mine did) that you had a YEAR to find a match before the tentative offer would expire. If you don't think you can find a team you'll be at least content on within a year in a company the size of Google, I don't know what to tell you. And both are better than Amazon, which makes you pick your team BEFORE interviewing. There's not even a list of what sorts of teams exist, so you're picking based on which recruiter you got, not based on what you're interested in.

hey one doubt , does google /facebook allow it's software engineers to work on personal projects / personal startups ? as long as it's not competing with it's own products like how clement made algoexpert alongside working at google ?
@SoftwareEngenius4 жыл бұрын
@@hat_awesome21 Tricky, they typically have clauses. If it's a substantial portion of income I think it becomes a problem. For something like AlgoExpert it could become a conflict of interest because it might coincide with the interview process? It's generally discouraged because they don't want employees burning out and not focusing on their job, but to answer your question it highly depends.

If you were in the position, what would you do to reach your goal? (I'm really interested in seeing what approach people would take here, it would be even more interesting if you were to take the {self-taught} route and not include bootcamps). :) Good luck to everyone!

Nice video! A few random thoughts: I disagree about the internal tools. Facebook internal tools generally have a better, easier-to-use UI, which is super important when you're not the kind of engineer who likes to spend all their time learning internal proprietary technologies. This is a consequence of the whole company deciding on one web stack (React+Hack) vs the 5+ at Google. And Google's Q&A is sometimes (in some offices) called TGIAF - Thank Goodness It's Almost Friday.

Every people asking the same question a million times in google "How can I get a job at Google". The maximum time we can see someone got a job at Google as a software engineer. But we can't see that is there anybody else who isn't coder, software engineer or software developer/engineer. There's not only software engineer position at Google, Facebook, Microsoft, etc. Peoples are only buzzing and shouting software engineer, software engineer, software engineer. OMG, in short, I'm deaf for this buzz. Like if someone has the interest to get a job at Google except software engineer. Then how do he/she prepare himself? I don't know why people not asking the question.

@novemberjohns6724 жыл бұрын
It depends entirely on your makeup as a person. I’ve been in software development and architecture for about 12 years now, do not have a college degree, and make just over $250k/year. If you are aggressive, a self-starter, creative, intelligent, can communicate with well with others, able to learn like your life depends on it (cause it almost does), and MOST importantly envision and LIVE the success before it happens, then you may not need the degree. However, your experience and portfolio of work need to speak loudly.
