Machines outperform humans in calculations. So why is a robot startled by a task of folding a wrinkled sock? Neural engineer Polina Anikeeva, Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT, describes how differences in natural "brain hardware" and solid-state electronics lead to differences between human and artificial intelligence, and what challenges and opportunities stem from those differences. Prof. Polina Anikeeva joined DMSE in 2011. Dr. Anikeeva's Ph.D. thesis focussed on physical properties and design of light emitting devices based on organic materials and nanoparticles, working under the supervision of Prof. Vladimir Bulovic in EECS. She previously held the Dean's Postdoctoral Fellowship, School of Medicine, Stanford and was in the group of Prof. Karl Deisseroth in the Department of Bioengineering. Her current research is focused on development of optoelectronic and magnetic materials and devices for recording and modulating activity of neurons in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral organs. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thank you, informative and interesting. Other proponents of the extended brain, that I've seen, didn't emphasize the plasticity of the brain. I'm a bit curious about posing BCI as a matter or urgency, I agree entirely on that point, but as a missed opportunity if it doesn't get there before AI gets real? Yeah AI could be super bad, could also be liberation. Depends on what, maybe whose, AI it is. Hmm so is the problem that 'it' may 'perfect' BCI before we do? To me it looks a lot like our biggest danger is ourselves.

You would have to consider the sensitive nature of the most personal and sensitive things that happen on the cognitive level before it is able to manifest into the physical world. Things like accounts, passwords, emails... if you can’t get ahead of yourself and your enemy there’s no point in developing this project because it will create more harm than good.

you cant. not only because its so complicated, but, because consciousness (the "brain" is hardware) is created by life. since the first cell moved away from danger and toward food, our cells and the life they posses are not separate. we ARE cells, and feelings are chemicals and hormones that are bound to our physical structure. it can not be separated. if you move our brains to a jar, we would become totally different over time, (think of your consciousness as a kid, or, an old person, etc...) a brain in a jar with no eyes and ears and no memories of them... is that really "YOU" ?? no, its not.... our bodies make us who we are.

No, she is pointing out the mechanical and hardware incompatibilities and the actual limitations of current biomechanical/computer hardware interface technologies. She is just pointing out we might need to acknowledge and respect the limits of our understanding of human consciousness and its relationship with the physical bodies we inhabit, on a purely bio-mechanical basis. If we would attempt to 'upload our consciousness' to a machine right now, it would be like taking a picture with a much lower resolution camera than if that interface/recording technology were better, aka a better res cam. She is suggesting the bridge to that hardware being developed is simple 'app/specialist' technology to enhance our current, biology based consciousness.

To suffer the sting of death (which is sin). To then suffer while dead, while being alive somewhere in the metaverse world, feeling hunger, pain, sorrow, regret, and fear, being haunted by webcrawlers, but cannot die? To only be later resurrected, judged and suffer death again, at the second death. Wow! That is having too much ambition. They will find a way to upload their consciousness in their created cloud system, transhumanism. Trying to achieve eternal life their way, without Christ. Eternal life is only a Gift from God, through Christ. You cannot achieve eternal life any other way. They will seek death, but death will run from them. Now that is suffering. Revelation 9:6, KJV. " In those days men will seek death and will not find it, they will desire to die, and death will flee from them."
