When people try and give advice to others about how they improve, they typically site physical problems. However, for most, the problems could be located within their own head.
Today I'll be focusing on the mental aspect of improving at osu!

Yes, I had the high expectations mentality at 100k rank. "Why couldn't I fc that?" "How did I miss?!?!". I wanted to hit 2k pp But i choked so much on so many maps that i just gave up. About 1 year later I decided to come back. Watching osu replays of top players rekindled my passion and i started playing bit by bit. I came in with low expectations and sure enough I surprised myself with fcs i thought i couldn't do before. Playing sports that year really helped my mindset. If i choked, I said i could do it next time. If i failed, i said i could do it next time. I have a slow improvement rate, 100k-70k in these past 4-5 months, and school always gives me no time to play, but when i play i make sure to make it the best sessions ever. Thanks for reading my rant.

NoThingNess -chan Yea. I can do 7* jumps pretty well and can stream 270 bpm, but i also shit miss a lot as well. I can have good controlled streams on bpms over 230 but between 200-230 its a mess, so ill try your suggestion.

I want to tell my thoughts on things since this video is actually good and I hope it will help at least one person. Warm up is always a thing. If you can play 220 bpm bursts at your top, you won't be able to do that after you just opened osu. That's why you should never expect anything when you are not even warmed up. Make your own map list that WILL warm you up. They should involve all the aspects of the game, not just jumps. For example first map can be a stream map (140-170 bpm, depends on you), then an aim map, then something that combines both and that is slightly harder than previous ones. The more maps, the better. Just 3 maps isn't enough, imo. Playing songs that you adore will probably help you with warming up, improving in general and there's less chance to tilt. If you can't keep up with the map in general then just don't play it to avoid tilt. The only exception is having fun. There's a software (osu BPM changer) that allows you to speed up/slow down maps. You can use that to play something you enjoy playing, but it's too easy/difficult for you. Actually, you can just play McOsu instead. It has that feature as well as other ones. Also try to avoid playing too much in one session. It often works well, but probably not for everyone. I mentioned this, because I think that we improve between sessions (aka while sleeping or just doing something else), not while playing. Warm up thing doesn't count here. So, to me, it's better to have 2 different sessions 2 hours long the same day than a single 4 hour long session. But you should make sure you have enough time to warm up and practice what you want. Try to play as many different maps as you can. Many people play same maps (usually farm maps) almost every day and they think there's no improvement, because they can't beat their own score by A LOT. And then they get disappointed and start telling their friends "I am so bad, I can't improve at all" which might even ruin their mood. Well, you can't improve that fast. That's why it's good to have many maps. Once you play most of maps you have (of your level obviously), you will definitely get a better score once you come back to what you already have played. I would never tryhard a map, because it gives you mindblocks and tilt. Yes, it might be hard to stop, but it's definitely worth stopping. Take a break or play other maps. Sometimes even a several days long break works fine. This tip is probably for very low % of players, but playing other modes can help you to improve in std. For example mania 7K and taiko will help you with finger control since they are based on it. Always try to experiment till you find what fits you the most and don't forget to have fun.

I'm new to osu and its community. I originally got this game just to get more used mouse movements for fps games (but instead I got addicted to cliccing circles LOL). This video is such an eye opener for me because I relate to it a lot. In other games I would be extremely hard on myself to the point where it damages my mental health. thxs so much for this video. Not only it applies to osu but any other game as well. a negative attitude will result in negative performance.

i had problems like this before, afterward they were just like forgotten cause i just play osu cause i enjoy it. Pratice the map, understanding the map and knowing i could fc without doubting myself about it. Just be patient about your improvement and not just push it, sure it might take a long ass time to gain ranks or maybe trying to pass a map... overral dont doubt yourself, your skills.

I can relate so much to the anxiety of beating your peers! They set scores that are way better than you and they are either the same rank or even lower ranked than you. This can go two ways: you'll feel bad about about yourself and become frustrated when you can't play said maps with the same level of proficiency as your peers... OR it ignites a flame for you to improve other parts of your game. Speaking from experience, I spent a better part of my LONG osu! career playing anime/eroge songs because music was my motivating factor. As a result, my skillset proficiency was jumpy and short streams. However seeing my friends scores on tech maps/alternating maps made me want to get better at those kinds of maps, but so I practiced. I quickly developed a toxic mindset towards my inadequacy as a player because I wasn't seeing immediate results. But I changed my mindset to "Why can't I beat them?" to "I'm hoping to beat my score/acc today" and so far have impressed myself with the scores I have set even though they are yet to compete with my friends.

I love having a mindset of like being the 1st global ranked player in the game and if no one other than me breaks the record, then no one is going to. This mindset helps me so much setting crazy scores here and there thinking I'm the god of osu! in the world of my own mind. It's like a manipulation sure, but it helps you improving quickly as you can slowly and slowly pushing your boundaries limit as quickly as possible before anyone else catch up (imaginary player on 2nd place)

Well, same as a lot of players, I also set my expectations too high, and after I hit that plateau, I thought I was actually trash. Really. It's just recently, after trying to understand what was really going on that i understood that I had a physical barrier. Whenever I stream(170bpm+), or even tap at high bpm, my fingers just start slowing down on their own, and I just can't keep up with the rhythm. I thought it was stamina related, so I kept on praticing streams practice maps and even lifting some things with my fingers in order to improve more quickly. But in the end, even with more stamina, it was still the same and I was dejected, considering if I shouldn't just quit the game. What gave me a blow is a friend of mine, a six digit beat my combo by far on a stream practice map at first try. Yeah that hurt a lot. After some considerations I just decided to accept my handicap(if it is even one) and continue to play for fun and improving my skills little by little. Maybe one day I will understand what is blocking me, but now I just enjoy playing and listening to maps/musics and I feel way better than before.

Before this happened, when i broke my 100pp wall i quicklt rose as i get more and more 100pp plays every time. That was months ago tho. Right now i am trying to break the 200pp wall. I got an fc on a 200pp play with a low acc on it so i didnt get that much pp. Ive been trying to fc it ever since but then just dissapointing myself. Months have passed and i have never felt so munch anxiety. I couldnt meet my expectations and i just thought that it maybe it time that i should stop. But of course, i couldnt. I have been searching for an answer to help myself get out of this hell hole. But then i remembered. This is a game and games are made to let us have fun. I then changed my perspecrive to just having fun while also working on my skills. Its been weeks since i changed my perspective and i went back to farming. I went back to getting so angry and dissapointed. For these past few days i have been so angry, even just something else other than osu that doesnt go my way make me angry. I then found this video. It gave me hope. Thank you for making this video even tho this was how many years ago. I know that nobody will care but i just wanted to put this here so that i can see this comment later on in the future :) Heh me getting all hoping like somethings gonna happen, i really hate people like that

When I started playing osu!, I tried too hard to get good right away. I got angry at myself if I wasn't able to FC a map. This carried on so long, that I wasn't improving. I almost completely stopped the game, only playing very rarely. When I actually came back, I felt better after the break, and didn't care as much as before. To my surprise, I actually improved by taking a break from those strong emotions. I'm still not the best, but I am significantly better than I was before.

I thought my consistency started to die, but in reality, it was pretty much the same. But now i can play 3-4* maps(passes) along with occasional 2* fc's. So i did improve. I should congratulate myself for coming that far. I'm not as trash as i thought to be.... I'm just going through challenges a typical osu player goes through.....

I feel *fucking motivated*. I trash talk myself as a joke but looking at the beatmaps page and seeing the recommended difficulty level feels lovely. It's funny because I'm a depressed pile of shit IRL.

For me I expect to be able to do something simple such as FCing 3-4 star maps, and yet I struggle to do even that. I'm rank 40k, so by all means I should be able to FC them, but if I'm doing even slightly decently I start stressing out. I wish I knew how to stop stressing, because that's one of the real killers for me.

i always hate it when people say they cant do something, because theyre bad at it, because i used to think that way about myself before changing my mentality to be: "im bad at this thing, but the more i practice it, the better ill get at it, its a slow process, but its guaranteed as long as i keep at it"

I repeat the sentences "I'm so f****ng bad" and "wtf I should just give up and quit"...well...**very** often. Yeah, I see where the problem is now. It's hard to get out of this mindset though since this is partly a result of my other problems and anxieties in my life. I was left out for 3 years at school, and I was somewhat bullied too. All this led to the conclusion of me thinking that I'm just a garbage can. There's one other thing which affects all of this, but I don't want to say it here since someone I know irl might see it. So...yeah. I know nobody cares but whatsoever I wanted to write this anyway.

Honestly same, watching people I've played with over the years passing me quickly while I'm stagnating has forced me to bash myself harshly. It's not just osu!. It's mainly my attitude on life, and I can't seem to get out of this habit. I'm so close to just giving not just on osu!, But improving in life. Hopefully you improve not just in osu!, But in your current life situation. For me, I'm just gonna stay the same, cause I'm a pessimistic hypocrite.

@@patholinofa4601 I'm sure things will get better for you too at some point, just try to hold on. I haven't changed much when it comes to osu!, I'm still basically the same pessimistic person who often repeats those sentences to myself when I play (maybe with a little less intensity though). When it comes to trying to improve in other parts of life, I've started feeling just a bit more optimistic about stuff. I'm not sure where it came from, I guess now above all I'm actually a bit more sure about what I'm gonna do in the future and stuff. I don't know what concrete advice I could give you, other than just please talk about your problems and other stuff to someone (it helped when I've talked about these things to my internet friends and my high school study advisor. And often it's just time itself that makes you realize things. I really hope that you get out of that mindset (I have to work on it myself still too), at least partially. And if osu! just makes you feel shit about yourself, try to decrease the amount you play the game. I basically only play for fun now, unless I feel a sudden ambitious urge to try to actually improve. I believe in you! :)
