It's not a constant shift. The 2 systems run parallel. The brain is multithreaded. Another analogy would be ram and rom. Both are always being written to and read from and both can be utilized for proccssing the other's data processing under specific load situations, i.e, a pagefile or the inverse analogy of bitcoin mining. System 1 in this case is operations that need to happen fast so they happen in ram. System 2 consists of slower, larger and more cumbersome data thus it is stored on disk and read from when needed, but is constantly updating the disk's inode table and such even when the user is idle. There is interchangeability tho because when you run out of ram those processes don't stop they occur on a pagefile which means ram data is literally writing to the data to disk to perform the operations because ram is out of resources. The bitcoin example is the inverse which is doing complex large data operations in ram only by utilizing the super fast and large ram capacity of cutting edge GPUs. Anyways, regardless of the analogy you prefer System 1 and System 2 run in parallel

Just curious, what is meant by it being a theory? Was this switching between system 1 and system 2 in our brain actually proven (for example neurologically) or has it just been observed? Is every single decision done by one of these systems or is it more complicated?

Hence it can't be proven using MRI or scans it's merely a theory about how our brain must be thinking...
