I think that when it comes to the issue of the tie and pocket square, we have to exercise caution that we not be dogmatic in any regard. My personal belief about it is that it is perfectly all right to match them perfectly. I see it and I think of a person who is highly logical. And for the person who prefers to coordinate the tie and pocket square between a solid and a pattern, I think of somebody who is more intuitive. So it's perfectly all right to coordinate a solid and a pattern.

This is the best explanation I have ever heard for this rule, and I think it holds up. It’s the same logic I have with shoes, actually: technically, there’s nothing wrong with only owning one of an item (whether it be shoes, suits, a particular accessory), but you should never look like you only own one. When I see matching ties and pocket squares, I don't think of lack of options. If I was to do so, I'd think of it not as me not having options, but of me having the option to do what I want to do. I don't like having so many colours in an outfit. I like to keep things simple. Hence why I'd probably match neckties and pocket squares.

Hi, Antonio. I'm going to respectfully disagree with your reasoning. When I see the pocket square and tie not matching, I think, "Oh, he couldn't be bothered to actually make the two items actually match. He threw together whatever was handy (or clean)." Matching the two items, to my brain, shows you care enough to pay attention to both items of clothing. When the two do not match, they look disjointed. I will agree that this is not a big deal overall. In my brain, I can see the person cares enough to put a suit on, but after that, I want to know what the person has to say or what they bring to the discussion.

As an artist, style is and have always been about others opinions. The ones that are widely accepted are the ones that shared the same opinion oftentimes because of “who” said so or “who is wearing it. We match our leathers because to most it makes since. We match our ties because to most it makes since. I choose to wear a matching tie with matching pocket square or pattern with solid or vice versa. Matched tie and pocket square is always a smart look. Mixing up the pocket square is also fine, it should compliment your complete look and not be your whole look. Ive seen more men get this wrong than right. When in doubt keep it simple. The term best used here is " SPREZZATURA " loose translation - effortless style.

While I understand the theory of choice I respectfully disagree. I wear a uniform for work and prefer the matching look of pocket square and tie. I feel this "no matching" policy is akin to the old 80s great guys wear to earrings, or the earring on the right means your great nonsense. Fashion and Style are and will always be based on what you feel comfortable with. Do what you want, feel good about yourself and don't get bogged down with the noise.

Options are wonderful, two different colours can definitely match each other, and I compliment anyone with a tie and a handkerchief to begin with. But I really don't care about silly no-nos, and I always wear matching tie and handkerchief, because I feel it looks much more stylish, clean and simply better. I really don't like this colour palette, some people wear for a suit, such as striped socks, orange trousers, navy jacket, red tie and polka dotted handkerchief. No thanks. In fact, I don't care what "one does", since "one" wears jeans with a jacket nowadays and "one" wears white sneakers with a suit! 🤮 If that is fashion, I'll stay old school and completely off beat, thank you. 😁 ANyway, nice video, bud. Hi Antonio, Love the channel. This is one thing that I have always been wary of. Who ever came up with this rule?. I make all of my own Bow Ties and Pocket Squares. I use a lot of Liberty of London Fabrics, and also make a lot using recycled Vintage Kimono silk, so go to a lot of effort to choose the fabrics carefully. Last year I flew to Paris and attended 2 fashion shows as part of fashion week and wore my own ties and Pocket Squares. I was so tempted to wear a matching set that I had made, but at the last minute did not due to this rule. I was worried that if anyone had this rule in the back of their minds they may think that I had no idea what I was doing. Some rules can be a bit intimidating and can take the fun out of being yourself. Don

Great timing! I was at formal wear hire shop for sizing/fitting as one of the best men for my good friend's wedding. He was not there but he had already selected the entire outfit. Sometimes, I think, you can match one color of pocket square and tie, but only if they are NOT SOLID! For example, Antonio's tie in red-blue combination. U can use red or blue with another color. It can play in contrast. But if you have a good solid tie - use pocket with some colors, or if it is formal meeting white president's variant. Antonio, I think, that rule with tie and pocket square is actual and it shows your good attention to others on the meeting.

I'm definitely too critical of a matching tie and pocket square. To me it seems like going for the most obvious thing that someone inexperienced goes for, thinking it's what people who dress well do. As a result I feel it can look pretty cheesy, unless you have that colour added somewhere else in the outfit as a theme you've thought about, or if it compliments the colour of the jacket really well

I don't match my pocket square and tie but I often find they clash and don't feel happy about them. It is quite annoying if you have spent a lot on a suit, shirt, tie, pocket-square individually but you put them together and fell a little like magician or party clown. Honestly, as long as you have a decent sense of fashion and color complimenting, it really doesn't matter whether the square matches your tie or not. Opinions are subjective and I wear suits bc I like to, not bc I'm worried about what other people think while I'm wearing it. Match them don't, either way, it's not gonna make THAT MUCH of an opinion change and if it does, you didn't need to be around them anyway.

As you said, it looks like that it all he's got or has no idea how to dress himself! There are many web site (bargain prices) sure not the best quality _(polyester)_ pocket square, even white or paisley. I would by three pocket squares, 1. white, all purpose, 2. paisley, blue back ground, 3. paisley, red background! These have covered all my pocket square needs! As I have blue, red, grey, black and a white neck ties! As for Bow ties, I only use a white pocket square!

What I do is have the inverted version of the tie for a pocket square. I have a black tie with white diamonds so I had a pocket square custom made that is white with the same diamond shapes but in black.

The way I was raised, If the tie is a solid color, try to match it, if you cant match the square ti the tie, then match it to the shirt color. If the Tie is stripped, match the prominent color on the tie to the square. Most times I have ties that come as a set that have exact matching pocket squares and thats fine too.

It depends on the day. I try not to totally match my square to my tie. However if I do, chances are my shirt has a more noticeable pattern. I'll match the square to the tie there so it doesn't look too busy having a patterned square and patterned shirt. However, if the pocket square and the shirt have similar patterns, I'll sooner match or correlate my square to my shirt than to my tie, but I'm still not above matching them some days. I say embrace the non-matching and complementary combinations, but don't let that keep you from matching them if that's what feels good while you're suiting up. Trust your gut.

I think the right approach isn't to look down on someone whose tie and pocket square match because they are taking steps in the right direction. Well, today, I see one guy rocking a pocket square for every thousand that does not. Hi! Does this rule still apply regarding weddings? There are two colours (pastel green and pastel purple) within the colour scheme so would the groom be best to wear one colour and the groomsmen the other colour, or to mix tie and pocket squares?

Rather than to mix it might be better to try a plain white pocket square made of silk. Neutral white will look timeless and elegant. My second choice would be a similar (but not exactly the same) color shade, possibly with subtle pattern or different texture. It could even be white with hints of those pastels. Going for exact match would be my third pick because it starts to resemble a costume rather than an outfit. But I think not many guests are going to obsess about it :)

I had to make a conscious effort to get neckties that were much more fun colors. I looked far too conservative for myself before. A pocket square, that might not necessarily match whatever else I'm wearing, is an extra dimension that's perfect for a king shit stud dork daddy like me !

No. It's actually desirable to mix materials and add a bit of texture. Also, silk pocket squares have a more formal look so something less shiny like cotton or linen might work better in everyday situations. However, if you have a combination that just works together, material is probably not the most important consideration.
