Chris, I had no idea that anyone else in the world struggled with that type of voice cracking. The type where it just kinda slips or wiggles away from pitch for a second. I personally call it “slipping” out of pitch. I’m sooo glad you covered this. Now I feel like I can finally move past that obstacle in my singing. And now that you mention it, it is definitely from over supporting in the wrong way. Thank you very much!

Yo, I just stumbled across your lessons dude and I gotta say that for me, these are some of the most valuable lessons I've come across on KZbin. It might be because I too am a Baritone, so your voice and methods make more sense to me than others. But you unlocked my voice almost completely in just a few lessons, particularly this very lesson. I'm sustaining high notes loud crisp and clean OR gritty if I want all of a sudden. Still a lot more control to learn and time will bring experience with it, as I know from learning many instruments. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Yesterday I was unsure if a Baritone really can sing high, now I'm crushing the stuff I wanted to sing yesterday. I teared up a little.

That Yellow cover was amazing. You should release it. Really tried to follow this but I ended up distorting - unintended but fun. Need to work on it though cos I think I push too much air through when I try to not use twang and try to get louder (I’m really quiet). My singing teacher at uni wants me to work on glottal onsets and belting. He keeps telling me that Celine and Idina Menzel are excellent belters but it would be cool to find some rock examples.

I like how you approach this learning process like a video game. Instead of repeating the same mistakes, you observe each trial and error, and then you adapt and change your ways. Just like defeating a final boss by finding their strengths and weaknesses and what potions can attack those weaknesses to go through each health bar. Except the boss here is voice cracking, and it’s defeated by finding a balance of support and compression.

Amazing video. Thanks a lot for this !! And it helped me to unlock high notes I thought I could never reach (except in Head voice, which kinda sound like Mickey Mouse when I do it haha). I can blast quite a lot of power up to E or even G without too much trouble (adding more compression and sometimes pushing a tad more the compression to add some rasp so it doesn't sound too "head voicy" haha). Which makes now the high C much less mystical and easier to reach in a musical context (which is a blessing, I have been dreaming for this). Although what I find very hard is to introduce that into singing. Swinging from the last note of the chest voice into mixed voice and vice versa with ease. Black Dog (Led Zeppelin) is a great example of this, which I find super hard. As I suddenly struggle to hit the high notes (where as individually or in 5th intervals, I can reach them). Probably not enough support ? Air ? Any thought on this ? :) Cheeeers.

This is mine first Chris Liepe experience and I am very surprised. A friend of mine suggested me "Motionless IN White - Eternally Yours" nearly 3 weeks ago, that was my first experience with "extreme vocal songs" and I wanted to sing it. I am living in Turkey and most coaches here thinking extreme vocals are very bad for our body. They say it can even cause you puke blood from throat. There is a vocal coach named "Emre Yücelen", he said there is no true extreme vocal in live, singers have a secret button in their microphones to give a effect to their voices that makes their voices extreme. So I had no guide for how to go extreme. Literally ANY. I tried to go extreme with my throat first and I said "wait a minute, I must doing something very very wrong, I can not stand doing this even for 10 seconds!" After that, I stopped trying to go extreme. Until I saw a acoustic version of Motionless IN White's "Voices". In that video, Chris Motionless whispers instead of going extreme and says "sorry for the screaming parts". I said "WTF is screaming?" at that point. Why did not he say sorry for extreme parts? What is screaming? He creates all of these sounds by just screaming? I listened a couple more MIW songs named "Rats", "Another Life" and "Headache" and I tried to understand what he does for creating these sounds. In Rats, he is just frying his voice to go deeper than his vocal range, sounds like some Rammstein listeners trying to sing along with their non-bass voices. But I also noticed that fry sound sounds like his "scream" just without aggression and diaphragm power. In Another Life, I focused on chorus and "I wont let go" parts. I noticed he is not trying to f*ck his throat up to limits, he is just compressing and frying his voice and gives it strength with just air power. "But I hate that it seems you were never enough" part, he can do a note trick between "never" and "enough" words and this is a proof of he is not pushing himself all up his limits. In "Headache", he uses air and "water(?)" for creating "shut up" sounds in chorus. I could feel the mucus and water vibrating in his throat. I thought "that is key of screaming", I could not scream because I do not use water just like eating ice cream without drinking water after finishing it. Ice cream made my throat ache but it was all my fault that I did not drink water. If I want to eat some ice cream, I must drink water after it. So I must use my throat liquids as lubricant gel and I will not damage my throat. I no longer get pain when I am screaming and trying to improve my scream. In this video, I noticed that I can use these crack points as more ways of scream. Can't I? Pushing crack hard may harm my throat but I have lubricant gel from my own factory that made for keep my throat secure when I scream right? :)

Learning to hold back air is one of the best things to work on. Sometimes it's very physically demanding and some singers shy away from it. I was frequently cracking from uncontrolled air velocity on certain song sections. When I learned to harness and control air pressure, (and sing counterintuitively) things really got better.

i found there are 2 ways to go high 1 is a limited chest pull. its when you are in belting position with your mouth and you can push up to about a G4. if you wanna go higher you need to let go of the gas a little bit and go for a mixed postion while belting. the first one you push the high note out and the second on you ease more into it but you can go super high and get that belting power. i don't really have a cracking issues but this does help a little with combining the 2 techniques

One of the main reason for the crack is an inflammation in the larynx. This inflamation could.be mainly due to the following issues 1) Poor digestion and acid reflux 2) respiratory infection and phlegm. 3) Poor secretion of thin saliva which is the lubricant by the salivary gland in throat, 4)Dry throat 5) poor thyroid function (hypothyroidism which causes poor metabolism and dry throat over all) 6) LPR or silent reflux 7) Allergy 8) Air polution. Many are interlinked and they can occur together.

But notice how loud you must be to merge that break. I've found that personally true too. If are adding dynamics in that area, it won't work bc of the volume needed. Another issue, but it's more noticeable as to cause... A break that happens bc if throat issues. Phlegm, post nasal drip, having to constantly clear the throat due to this.... All cause breaks and really disrupts singing. I know bc I experience all 3. It's thought I have these due to mycotoxin illness and lyme. So it's not easily fixable. I've lived with it since my teens (way b4 this dx) . (Thank goodness I never made it a career... Can see recording sessions being looong with all the takes!)

This gives me problems, because I'm a low-baritone and I can't sing notes in the E4-F#4 range without belting super hard and sounding bad and strained, but if I mix I go up to C#5 with power and distortion, and G5 by lightening the sound a bit, but I can't mix in the passaggio the closed vowel and the open "AH"....
