Rorschach is the perfect example of someone who has every reason to backfire on society and be a vengeful maniac but instead dedicates himself towards stopping criminals, fighting corruption, and deciphering the truth.

@drjonesey5

I don't think that's accurate. Society didn't do anything to him, his parental figures did and some bullies. If anything he's basically any kid with bad parents that gets bullied and grows up hating bad people but instead of not acting on that hate, he did. Characters that hate society that are Western usually are not that impactful because their hate is not justified. Like why would he hate society? His mother is to blame, his dad is to blame for abandoning his kid and some bullies. The social structure itself is not to blame for his misfortunes as there are way worst social structures he could be born in that are responsible for their citizens sole hate for living, just pick any dictatorship. Not only would he get bullied and can still have bad parents, society is fully controlled and indoctrinated a certain way by force and nobody can step out of line. Being disgusted with evil people, and wanting them to get justice is normal for everyone besides those doing evil; which is why I feel his character is more relatable than the others. I think we all want pedophiles, murderers, rapist etc to get punished, but it's not like we know who they are immediately, and the culture does not influence us to push for them like it should. To best honest, if some guy rapes a kid, and gets 5 years in prison, that's not justice, we should be able to go into his home, drag him out and get rid of him but nobody does most of the time so when we see fictional depictions of it, we feel satisfaction because in some sense justice was served even thought it's fake. But nobody fights for harsher punishments in real life for these people though either, so whose to blame here. The country use to be way more open to capital punishment, look at us now? we think 25 years in prison is justice for a young man that raped a 16 year old, killed her and then tried to kill her sister and then went to court and stuck his middle finger up during the trail. It would have ended just like that, but he screwed himself writing a letter how he had no remorse and enjoyed it for him to get the death penalty. Why did it take all that? The rape was enough, the murder just added to it, and then the attack on the sister was beyond enough.

@@drjonesey5 What I think happened to him is that people in his personal life hardened him into a man of decisive action, no matter the cost. A person who’d rather make an overreaching, absolutist and potentially even wrong choice over making no choice at all. However when he realized that the general society’s methods were more reserved and less absolute, it disgusted him. He saw caution and innocent until proven guilty as a kind of weakness or cowardice. An unwillingness to do what must be done, according to him. That disgust with moderation is what creates Rorschach and Rorschach completely takes over Walter’s mind as he’s exposed to escalating amounts of darkness. Culminating in the destruction of whatever was left of the man behind the mask when he encounters the kidnapper. Disgust ultimately turning into a cold, hopeless disdain that he couldn’t accept. So despite being completely hopeless, he fights on because the other choice is surrender. Society didn’t create Walter Kovac, it just turned an already mentally primed individual to irate madness. A madness he couldn’t keep bottled up and he couldn’t control. Leading to the creation of a being that can only be described as vengeance incarnate. A faceless, nameless creature that exists solely to deliver the retribution it believes to be necessary according to its own moral code. I’m willing to say that society or at the very least the people who stood by in the face of evil is what created Rorschach, but it wasn’t responsible for what happened to Walter Kovac. Which is an important distinction because the two are essentially completely different people.

Although in the Alan Moore comic Rorschach would have thought that a quick killing ala the movie with a blow to the head for that child kidnapper would have been a far too merciful and quick death for someone like that compared to slowly and agonizingly burning him alive and standing by to watch it. “Stood in street. Rorshach's end was brutally beautiful. He was born into a miserable life of suffering, guilty of simply existing, like a toy for forces beyond human understanding. His final confrontation with Dr Manhattan brought it all to a head, faced with an adversary which he'd spent his entire life battling, he simply looked it in the eye, refused to back down, and screamed 'DO IT!!!' He may have been born to suffer, but he lived to fight, and died with his uncompromising principles unblemished.

So, when kids like you pretend to talk about what, um, kinds of "characters" are, uh, Supposed to live or die when you've honestly never even tried to live or learn about the world or even go outside.....It's kind of embarrassing for other people to have to see someone acting So shamefully, ya know, so could you please stop and hide your shame? Your story is finished because you choose to not even try to make you. The best kind of end for you is always death. It's a story no one wants or cares about, yet forced to exist and force people to have to hear the same pointless, terrible and depressing tale once again, Just to make the world a slightly worse place and cause a little sadness for no reason. @Alucard Actually None of the witness's saw the attack on Kitty Genovese in it's entirety, And the 1964 New York Times article exaggerated the number of witnesses to that crime and the idea of there being 38 unresponsive witnesses Only a few had glimpsed parts of it, or recognized the cries for help. Many thought they had heard a lovers quarrel or drunks calling, and some people intervened in the matter of Kitty Genovese's death, two people called the police, and there were two attacks on her not three. Plus a 70 year old woman ventured out and cradled the dying woman in her arms until the police arrived. Ms. Genovese died on her way to the hospital.
@xxalucard66xx
@xxalucard66xx 3 жыл бұрын
@@cha5 I read that article, but still, a woman being attacked, who would be screaming for help, is not going to sound like "lovers" and is unlikely to sound like "drunks". I'd argue it's more likely that some of the people interviewed couldn't accept the fact that their inaction could have led to a woman's death. Look at how people reacted to the obedience experiments; some people were outraged and couldnt accept the conclusion that they weren't so different from nazis pushing children into gas chambers with the attitude of "I'm just doing my job". True, some people did react to help her or at least investigate, but if you look at the attitude of many people in the big city it's incredibly common for people to have a complete lack of empathy due to cramped living conditions and remarkable levels of competition.
@cha5
@cha5 3 жыл бұрын
Alucard Yes well I’m not saying some people didn’t ignore her attack, but that 1964 NYT article also blatantly distorted some of the events of what happened on that night that was only corrected in a 2016 NYT article when her killer died, such as making it out to be 38 witnesses, which wasn’t the case and the number of attacks and this idea that everyone just ignored what was going on that night. And there have been plenty of citizens acting as crime stoppers and neighborhood crime watches in a lot of big cities more often than not.

I mean, I tried, but 1 vs. 6, hell even 1 vs. 4 is a fight I find impossible for me to win Even using knives and trying to kill the kidnappers with a surprise attack. I mean, even when walking up to calm police officers, there are 8 of them doing routine "police brutality" that they were ordered to do by the local Judge and lawyers, all I can do is ask "please stop?" and it's always "Sorry, have to", and then they get back to standing around someone for another 1 hour while 100 cars drive by and no one doesn't anything except maybe look......and I'm just actually upset because I didn't get tasered or pep sprayed or even impolite manner from the situation I spent 2 hours working up the courage to just walk up to the "scene scene", and there was no danger, But also no other people doing anything or having any excuse to be lazy, stupid failures! No one else will help, reason is ignored, people won't Not do whatever it is they're order to until they are killed or at least delude themselves into thinking, no one tells the truth or talks about important stuff like this. and everyone else just pretends that they Can't even risk even Thinking about doing anything because if they do then everyone dies because of "fake threat X" and "fake excuse X" is something important that they Can't risk and that's just how it is for them because they are "fake playing the victim label X". People Choose to do what's wrong and incorrect because it's the easy, weaklings path. And also because it's easy to not let anyone help you or tell you something important, just hide in your house and close the door. No communication or possibly learning anything useful any more! Rorschach's interesting, especially when you look at him vs the rest of the Watchmen group: Probably has the least powers/resources, yet is really effective at his work. He believes in upholding justice and the law, but doesn't actually care about humanity. In a lot of ways, you could argue he does the most moral good, because he kills criminals, even if murder is wrong. Nite Owl and Silk Spectre are kinda treated as the two most "good" heroes in the graphic novel, but they're also pretty much ineffective and useless. Dr. Manhattan is a god, and like Rorschach, he cares nothing for humanity anymore. Ozymandias is one of those crazy antiheroes who's too smart and too powerful for his own good, and I think his mix of ego and "caring" for humanity too much is what makes him the antihero. By caring, I mean Ozy is stressed about the nuclear war coming and like most super rich assholes, thinks he's the only person capable of stopping it. The Comedian is basically Rorschach plus status, minus morality. It kinda seems like Alan Moore was saying to be an effective hero, you have to hate humanity or at the very least, care nothing for it. It also seems like Alan Moore was saying humanity is better off without heroes, but maybe that's just my own belief coming in too. But I also read Watchmen at a young enough age that it informed my views on superheroes.

I agree with most of what you said, except that I believe Rorschach did care about humanity and hated the current state of it then slowly down the line he started to care more about Justice itself. Actually, I think it's not quite true that he upholds law. He believes in a retribution kind of system of justice. The kind of justice that the law expressly forbids. He kills criminals denying them legal rights for a fair trial or due process. Firstly, because he sees criminals are subhuman, or as he expressly puts it "Men get arrested. Dogs get put down." That sums up his thoughts on crime and those who do evil things. They are no longer human or deserving of the protections of societies laws. He may also see law and order as it stands as corrupt and unable stop the true evils in the world. He sees his brand of justice to be pure and deserved and cares little for what others think of his actions. He only sees black and white, and he is the only judge and jury he needs or trusts.

"I wanted to kind of make this like, ‘Yeah, this is what Batman would be in the real world.’ But I had forgotten that actually to a lot of comic fans that smelling, not having a girlfriend-these are actually kind of heroic. So actually, sort of, Rorschach became the most popular character in Watchmen. I meant him to be a bad example, but I have people come up to me in the street saying, ‘I am Rorschach! That is my story!’ And I’ll be thinking, ‘Yeah, great, can you just keep away from me and never come anywhere near me again for as long as I live?'"

The Kitty Genovese story has always had some untruths mixed in. The narrative that no one came to her aid is only partially true. While no one physically went down to the street to help, quite a few people yelled from their windows at the attacker during the entire attack telling him to "Get out of here; leave her alone; etc." Not enough, but not "nothing". Also, the police received several phone calls from the neighborhood during the attack, telling them what was going on and begging them to hurry up and send officers to the scene. This narrative that the neighbors just didn't care enough is untrue.
