SO how much money do you need to move to Thailand and try to make a new life?
I know what the government guidelines say,,,, but what if you don't have that much and still want to try starting a life in paradise...
in this video I get candid about cash, investing and shatter a few dreams along the way,,,,,,
again these are just my observations and opinions they're not gospel and by no means are they intelligent!!!!

Dr Mark the man who delivers. I asked him to put up prices in pounds as well as dollars, he said he will see what he can do. And bosh the prices are in pounds. A man of his word. Trust the good Dr 555. Ps I'm going to take a chance and use an agent to get the retirement visa. If it goes tits up at least I tries. He who dares wins

Hi Mark. For me I went the old school route. Stayed and found a career that had a pension plan builtt into the compensation package. Made my money in the west and spend it in the east. I know it was a slow burn and not everyone is built to do the same thing for 30 years. Plus many of the jobs that had traditional pension plans have been rebranded or just eliminated. Todays job market is totally upside down. If your 20-40 years old good luck because your going to have to create your own hustle, if your lucky that hustle will most likely pay for rent, food, utilities, clothing, a car and not much else. Elite greed will at some point create a doomed society. I plan on spending my pension and social security check from both ends of the candle. Maybe i will find a smoking hot Edith Bunker type to share with. Wish me luck folks.

You are 100% correct and bless youbbrother for being one of those people that was able to do that... Makes good mathematical sense, however living in a minimalist apartment without somewhere to keep your motorcycle stock and the need to remain under the radar in terms of working without a appropriate visa , I see it as a very stressful experience. Not to mention that each bike needs the tax/registration updated annually which is done via a government agency meaning they would need to be brought and registered in a Thai name. Don’t misunderstand me, ! I like the idea but there’s a whole world of potential pitfalls. Good luck 🤞

Hey brother and that is why I said right in the video that you need to find a local Thai person that you can trust..... also believe it or not storage for 5 to 10 bikes here is simple and easy because for the most part they're going to be rented out pretty much full time and wherever you're living you're going to have some motorcycle parking it's everywhere here in Thailand....

Great blog. Sounds great for a person on a limited budget. I myself will be retiring with $ 1,200mo. I read that thaiis don't fix their bikes, they buy new ones. So there is a Hugh stockpile of broken trade in bikes that the dealer just junks it. What a waste. I would like to buy a bunch of these and fix and sell it or renting.

Hi Mark. Love your videos. I’ve been working as a teacher for the past 5 years and it’s been great. I get paid more than most of my coworkers because the color of my passport. 90% of the teachers here are actually Filipino so being ESL themselves they’re going to take a hit when it comes to their salaries. That being said the teachers I know have great lives here but I am living in Bangkok so it’s probably a little different in the south. To be a teacher here you really need to have an open mind and also have the ability to adapt to change. It’s definitely not for everyone but if you’re interested I wholeheartedly recommend it Especially if you’re a native speaker of English. Cheers mark!

@@shauneholliss5380 technically to be a qualified teacher a Bachelors is required. However most schools find work arounds/loopholes in the rules where teachers are able to teach as long as they are taking classes to work towards their degree. They may use this as a reason to pay you less so keep that in mind. I moved to Thailand after I got might bachelors at the age of 33. I’m 38 now and I’ve been working the entire time with plenty of opportunities to make extra money. I definitely recommend getting your bachelors first but there are plenty of teachers here working without a degree but they’re pretty much all taking classes.

You speak the truth, doctor. I spent a month in Thailand, about two weeks in Chiang Mai, the rest around Bangkok, and with plane ticket, I spent close to $5K USD, and that was doing whatever and going wherever I wanted, your typical farang abroad. I stayed in CM for so long to get a feel of what it would be like to live there long term, once the allure of the 700THB trips up to Doi Sutep wore off. I could work as a teacher if I wanted to. I would want $2K a month *minimum* to start, with a strong bungee cord passive investment income stream steading coming from back home. I think I would have to try really hard to spend any more than that once I had a daily routine, better if you own a condo and save rent expense.

7:45 One other thing. Thailand has a minimum wage for foreigners. If you are an American, the business has to pay you a minimum of 60,000THB a month to get you a work permit (teachers are lower). Nobody is going to pay you that much unless you have specific skills. And if you get caught working without a work permit they will simply escort to the border.

Another great video Doc. Very accurate information. I am lucky and have a reasonable budget to work with and can afford more. Still I eat cheaply a lot. 100 metres from my condo we can have 2 breakfasts and 2 bottles of water for 100 baht. If you find places like this you can stretch your budget. My monthly budget is around $2600 Aus dollars , around 1700-1800USD and I have more money put away for travel to other places. Keep up the good work!. I must say I did use an agent for my retirement visa. They accompanied me to the crowded immigration office, tapped on a window and someone took my photo and we left. I spent less than 2 minutes in immigration. I call that money well spent,,, Cheers

Great video Mark. As the idea of moving overseas from the United States grows, there is going to be more and more people trying it without sufficient money. Me personally, I would not feel comfortable doing it unless I had at least $2,000 a month in guaranteed passive income with $25,000 in the bank. Then with living a similar lifestyle to you there would seem to be no problems and thus peace of mind. If you stay away from the bars and transactional ladies, you would really be good to go. There is a movement in the US called the passport bros. Encourages guys to go overseas to find women/wife. This movement is centered around younger African Americans, but also extends to young white guys, I predict these guys are going to have big problems including financial. First, they are most likely to fall into the hands of the bar girls, message girls and freelancers. Although there will be a number of them with financial means many will not have sufficient recurring income. Going out on a limb to be out of your home country without sufficient funds to get you back to your home country and have the ability to have some place to live when you get back, is really a bad idea.
@Wizerud

You could easily do it on way less than $2k a month but it will involve no girls and no beer 😂 Rent you can do easily for 300 a month or less on a longish term lease, food let’s say $15 budget per day puts you at $450 a month so that’s $750 total. Your other expenses in no way should put you past 1k/month so long as you can live with semi-frugal discipline and hope for no emergencies. Obviously if you have a nice buffer above that and some extra in the bank you’d have to seriously eff up to not make it work!

I'd increase that "in the bank" figure to at least $100-200k, and that's for a situation such as having to pay blood money for killing a local in a traffic accident (or to pay off the police in order to bail country for whatever bullshit charge and imprisonment one may face). As for passport bros....fucking morons who still haven't learned their lesson. Do not marry, do not breed. Goes for any man anywhere in this day and age. Rent, don't buy.

If you’re only bringing in about $4-500/month… and you have to pay for maintenance.. andyou have to pay a local “partner” I just don’t see how it’s sustainable long term. The bikes would eventually have to be replaced and you’re already living on next to nothing. Now if you have $8-10k to start with, you MIGHT be able to grow it over time so you’re not always living like a pauper. But that still requires you to live on 500 a month for quite some time while you reinvest the small remainder of your profits. It’s not for the week willed, that’s for sure.

But the problem is the premise of the video is the absolute bare minimum and the bare minimum would be in my opinion $5,000 you can definitely make it work on $5,000. I don't think a lot of people understand just how cheap it is to maintain bikes you can do a full oil and fluid change for less than $6... Full brake jobs are less than than $10 The amount that you would pay your local partner because that's what we're going to call him is going to be so minuscule it's hilarious No question you're going to have to live tight that's why very few people would be able to do this but you certainly could no question at all even with only 5,000. . The biggest hurdle as you alluded to is how many people have the will to do this it takes discipline determination and drive and sadly enough very few people have those qualities anymore.. Cheers mate 🍺

@@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean yeah it’s just such a tight margin. No room for error or unexpected big expenses. Not to mention, I imagine the bike rental business isn’t nearly as busy in the low season. I know I couldn’t do it now in my early 40’s. Maybe in my 20’s but I wouldn’t have had the balls or know how. Anyway, appreciate this and your other vids. Hopefully I’ll get over there one of these days myself. Take care!

well there's the thing brother don't forget during low season if you have the lowest priced bikes you're going to have yours rented out all the time. Then in high season you're going to be able to rent them for a little bit more.. as for an emergency really the only thing you would have to worry about is somebody back into the bikes but you're taking a deposit for that. most damage that's done can be covered by the deposit that's just the truth unless someone completely totally destroys the bike... my thing is I see so many people come here with a few dollars and they try to do stuff that will not work and they just don't get it... I have watched every single guy that has tried to be a day trader tried to do nft's tried to do crypto all of that stuff I've watched them lose everything that they had and then have to crawl back home begging people myself included to give them money for a plane ticket When if they did something that actually generates income they would have been okay I'm not saying they would have lived like a king but it would have been okay.. but nobody today wants to hustle nobody wants to do anything that's why you have all of these stupid videos on social media going on about how oh you can work but do this side hustle instead it's b*******

I lived in Thailand for a year in 2019 and my passive income was roughly $1100 a month. I did it but I feel much more comfortable having a solid income of $1700 a month plus at least $16K USD in the bank, zero credit card balances as well for settling in and for emergencies. Thailand is one of those places where it’s literally pay to win. If you’re broke don’t even think about coming here that’s my conclusion but then even if you’re rich and rolling in dollars you can easily lose it all by being that one single desperate guy who’s handing out money to a freelancing girl at places like khaosan or Pattaya. Which means if you’re planning on living here full time 800k baht is just isn’t gonna cut it if you really want to live a comfortable lifestyle here it’s best to save up at least in the Millions of baht cause over here things are unpredictable and everything such as scams can happen to you and it’s really common which is why it’s good to keep your money in separate accounts

Thank you for yet another well done video. It seems to me an option is to put your skills to good use by creating a company. But what does it take to create a business in Thailand, say if you are a carpenter, or a teacher who wants to start a private school/tuition service, or maybe youre in the contruction business, is anything like that a viable plan? I mean starting your own business (not hustling by renting out bikes but a proper company). Maybe a video idea?

Guys,...save more than $5000 (before round trip ticket) to ease your mind. Also, I think that maybe a 12 or 18 month sabattical (time limited stint) in Thailand would be better for young folks on a tighter budget. In that time in country,...then soberly make plans for starting a business while in Thailand.

Welcome to the channel You're 💯 right You're not supposed to take a job that a Thai can do,,,,, however there are hundreds of foreign workers here in Patong alone working,,, let's say illegally.... Renting motorbikes as a BUSINESS would be acceptable however again as I stated you would need to find a local Thai person that you can trust... Never said it would be easy,,, but it can be done Look I know several guys that are here, have been here and will remain here doing this completely under the table and have had zeros issues . The biggest issues with the 'bike rentals' plan, in my opinion, are ; damage and the upkeep of your bikes; if you can't do this yourself , thats plenty of money gone. Plus Stolen bikes, and written off bikes. Plus the issue of partnering with any Thai to cover the legality. You cant trust any thai, unless you have known them forever. How do they find this Thai ? Because as soon as you are making good money , a Thai official will drop from a tree .

Maintenance and upkeep is actually so cheap here it's hilarious.... No one is going to steal a bike,,,,,, they takes copy of your passport when you rentna bike,,,,, Pretty hard to leave the country when you've been flagged for theft. Damage happens that's why you charge a deposit ... As for finding a Thai you can trust,,,, that's an issue for sure but they are here,,,,. Just not in the bars or massage parlors....

@@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean I am not talking about cosmetic damage . Bikes get damaged thru poor riding : clutch and engine parts , the things that you likely don't know how to repair, for example . Brakes and tires and chains all cost, oil costs . It is very poor business practice to laugh off very constant and very real expenses ,that will bite you in the ass. I also was not talking about the 'renter' stealing the bike. I was talking about the bike being stolen from the renter . Sure insurance might help you and them , but it means more paperwork and a bike off the road, income down. Rented bikes absolutely get stolen. I am Sure your plan will succeed, but only with serious diligence. It will fall on its ass if taken too lightly. I thinkif you find time ,this would be a cool project to test. Might end up the rental king of SEA.

So if you can deposit 400 000 Bath and can proof an income of at least 32,500 Bath a month, you're good to go. If your girlfriend ask for support for her self or her family after 3 days, it's a big warning sign! Put up the red flag and move on to the next one. I did not pay any support before we bought a used car together when we got married, and she have never been asked for anything more for her self, her kids or other in the family except for birthday gifts. I have a high burn rate with 2 kids in international education and I make a good living from trading options. But...... I have capital and I have five years experience of options trading. A certain temperament is also required to be a successful options trader. I also have dividend income and I still get consulting work from the industry I spent my career in. I have hobbies that I enjoy including riding a couple of classic motorbikes and wild bird photography. I have a condo' in Bangkok and a rural house close to a river and a national park. I can also tell you that I stay away from the touristy areas, preferring rural farmland and national parks. Life is good. As you would say, I am living my best life. 😁😁👍👍

I keep telling my kids that they can take risks and make mistakes up until around age 30 as long as they save 5-10% for retirement, then they have to choose an objectively safe path. If they don’t have a career ironed out already, they’ll have to put further risks on hold for another 25-30 years. There are always exceptions, but we all know those are rare. A shoestring budget for any country is inherently a young persons game. I would never suggest it to anyone over 30 and under 50 without a steady income stream that isn’t earning at least 2-3x of what they need to survive and can afford health insurance. 25 with some money in the bank for a 3-6 month experiment? Absolutely! Over 50 with a pension or investments that yield steady income? Definitely! Everyone else could be derailing themselves permanently and putting their life at risk.

hey Michael that is fantastic advice that you're giving your children and I certainly hope that they're following through on that fatherly financial wisdom... the stark reality though is that a lot of people in North America are not in your situation or your children situation... I think we can both agree on that. And again these videos are not promoting coming to live in Thailand on a shoestring budget that's not what they're about... They're about hope and possibility. they are saying to someone listen if this is all you have here's what you could possibly do but essentially you have to have discipline determination and drive.. I don't think you have any idea how many people reach out to me on a weekly basis asking me what should they do how can they get rich how can they do this how can they do that it's beyond belief how North American society is not teaching it's children and it's young how to be financially responsible... I am going to be doing a follow-up video to this one Michael and I really hope that you watch it because you sound like the type of guy that I would applaud as a parent. that looks like a sound idea but without a thai bussines partner all i can see is problems work permit, repairs and maintenance although cheap in thailand will eat into any profit, registration of bikes ect cleaning each bike before rental and storage etc etc, plan will work great on any island or tourist hot spot but surely the locals will already have the market so i think your initial investment will need t a little bigger, very intersted in this project and if you do take the plunge will follow with great interest as i to thought of a similar idea but didnt have the time or funds to risk at htis time and finding a trustworthy person to run this project with the skills is easier said than done thanks for sharing really enjoy your vloggs.

and that's the thing my friend you thought about doing it but you didn't have the funds so what I'm saying in this video is if all you had was the absolute bare minimum of 5,000 US dollars to come to Thailand and try to start a new life..... This is what I would do I will also say this much that you can come here and start renting them out by yourself on Facebook marketplace if you're willing to take that risk. it all comes down to what people are willing to risk I'm not suggesting people do it I'm just saying that if I had to come here and all I had was $5,000 this is what I would do but I'm a survivor I'm not one of these people that would just give up

Would like your comment or how you look after this. I am a resident Canadian that visits and loves Thailand. My understanding is if a Canadian is out of Canada more than 6 months in any consecutive 12 months you loose Canadian residency, medical, and tax implications, etc
@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean
@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean Жыл бұрын
You do not lose residency what happens is your Medicare gets suspended if you do not ask for an extension you can usually get a 9-month extension on your Medicare... The tax implications are pretty simple you pay income tax on any and can let you earn as a Canadian So the best way to explain this is for myself I pay income tax even though I'm out of the country I pay Canadian income tax if the government of Thailand ever decided that they wanted to start taxing my income that I generate here in Thailand I would pay them the taxes and pay the rest to Canada... What you do not lose your residency don't worry about that
@MB-gr6br
@MB-gr6br Жыл бұрын
You don't lose anything. Obviously are tax implications because residency and some documents like driver licence or health card get suspended when you are living more than 6 months abroad, but it's not a big issue.

Why hello there again Dr. Marc - - I believe many or most of the English schools do not hire anyone over 60 years old. I like your idea about renting motorbikes. There are probably some other things that could also be rented out in the same way. How much would you charge me to hang out with you for a week and learn all the things I need to know while living in Thailand? I would think providing A service to the tourists might be more lucrative than other jobs.

The side hustle gig is fine if a person has at least some baseline income stream to meet basis needs. The side gig money should be used to reduce spending from savings and enhance quality of life, but not as a life raft. Get straight in the west first.

Well I actually Kenneth that would be perfectly ideal but as I said in the video if you only had $5,000 if that's all you had this is what you could do.... I go on to say that you're going to have to live a very tight life no question at all and you're going to have to put money back into the business to build it up... Again you are right it would make life a whole lot easier but let's be honest this video wasn't made for people that have a bunch of money or a fantastic income stream it was for guys that are dreaming about changing their life and are struggling who could possibly save up $5,000 and give it a try.... @whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean
@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean Жыл бұрын
well again that's the trouble that's why I did this video because you're not going to open a weed shop here unless you get the proper permits and the proper working visa to do so... also keep in mind that the government subsidies for the cannabis shops do not apply to foreigners so unless you're going to get a local person to be a partner that's not going to happen for you also when those subsidies expire all of these weed shops are going to go out of business cuz none of them are making enough money to survive... you need a crap ton of money to open a 7-Eleven so really that's not pertinent to anybody watching these videos with mine... any type of retail shop such as clothing you need to carry so much inventory that again you're not going to be able to do that on this budget also there's so much competition it's crazy.... point blank the best way to come here and support yourself in the beginning if you have limited funds is exactly what I'm saying in this video Thanks for watching and commenting Cheers mate 🍺

To make 1000 USD profit after all expenses you need 20-30 bikes. Thats sounds like headache, 30 old motorbikes on the road every day is nightmare, assuming they are all rented out. You need place to park them, garage...cost $$. How much is insurance per bike, in case its stolen or damaged? Too much work for very little $$$, you could open massage shop and giving massages yourself. I guarantee you be making way more. Literally you got no competition and bike rentals are everywhere

No mate sorry your math is way off,,, i know guys that are doing it here and you don't need 30 bikes,,,,, you need more than the 5-6 I would start out with ,,,, but again you're starting out,,,,, As for a massage shop, nobody wants me to give them a massage band if you think renting bikes is a hassle,,,, try managing massage girls ...
